This article introduces the 'Environmental Scan' as answer to the question of hidden biases in digital heritage collections. Its substantive focus is digitized nineteenth-century British provincial newspapers, and in particular the JISC corpus, a popular, publicly-funded resource for scholars. While multiple papers have meticulously investigated the genesis of such newspaper collections, in the process highlighting the often unacknowledged politics of collection, preservation and dissemination via microfilm and now digitization, our aim is to explore questions of representativeness and bias in new ways by enriching computational analysis of digital corpora with the historical insights that can be derived from a contemporaneous reference source: namely, the Victorian newspaper press directories. We present a new dataset for the task of toponym resolution in digitized historical newspapers in English. It consists of 343 annotated articles from newspapers based in four different locations in England (Manchester, Ashton-under-Lyne, Poole and Dorchester), published between 1780 and 1870. The articles have been manually annotated with mentions of places, which are linked—whenever possible—to their corresponding entry on Wikipedia. The dataset consists of 3,364 annotated toponyms, of which 2,784 have been provided with a link to Wikipedia. The dataset is published in the British Library shared research repository, and is especially of interest to researchers working on improving semantic access to historical newspaper content. Although the Ordnance Survey has itself been the subject of historical research, scholars have not systematically used its maps as primary sources of information. This is partly for disciplinary reasons and partly for the technical reason that high-quality maps have not until recently been available digitally, geo-referenced, and in color. A final, and crucial, addition has been the creation of item-level metadata which allows map collections to become corpora which can for the first time be interrogated en masse as source material. By applying new Computer Vision methods leveraging machine learning, we outline a research pipeline for working with thousands (rather than a handful) of maps at once, which enables new forms of historical inquiry based on spatial analysis. Our 'patchwork method' draws on the longstanding desire to adopt an overall or 'complete' view of a territory, and in so doing highlights certain parallels between the situation faced by today's users of digitized maps, and a similar inflexion point faced by their predecessors in the nineteenth century, as the project to map the nation approached a form of completion. Purpose: The purpose of this study was to profile the physiological characteristics of amateur boxers using a battery of tests designed to assess the physiological and physical demands required for performance. Fifteen junior amateur (age 14.9 ± 2.0 years; stature 164 ± 12 cm; body mass 50.9 ± 11.3 kg) and sixteen senior amateur boxers (n = 16; age 20.5 ± 4.0 years; stature 174 ± 9 cm; body mass 65.2 ± 10.7 kg) provided informed consent to participate in the study. Body composition, squat jump (SJ), countermovement jump (CMJ), 5- and 10 m sprint (5SP/10SP), press up (PU), right and left medicine-ball single-arm throws (MBR, MBL), repeated sprint test (RST) and Yo-Yo intermittent recovery test level 1 (YY) were performed. The likelihood (% chance) of between-group differences were assessed using a magnitude based approach, standardised-difference score (Cohen's d) and 90% confidence intervals [CI]. Linear regression (r) was used to examine the association between variables. Results: Senior boxers outperformed (79 to 99% chance) junior counterparts in PU, YY, CMJ, SJ, 10SP, MBL and MBR tests (d ≥ 0.50 [-0.34 to 1.61]). There were very large (r 0.70) correlations between fat free mass, upper-and lower body lean mass and medicine ball throw distance. There were large correlations (r 0.50 to 0.69) between medicine ball throw distance and CMJ, SJ, PU, 5SP and 10SP. Conclusions: A simple and time-effective test battery was able to differentiate performance between junior and amateur boxers. The plant vascular system, composed of the xylem and phloem, is important for the transport of water, mineral nutrients, and photosynthate throughout the plant body. The vasculature is also the primary means by which developmental and stress signals move from one organ to another. Due to practical and technological limitations, proteomics analysis of xylem and phloem sap has been understudied in comparison to accessible sample types such as leaves and roots. However, recent advances in sample collection techniques and mass spectrometry technology are making it possible to comprehensively analyze vascular sap proteomes. In this mini-review, we discuss the emerging field of vascular sap proteomics, with a focus on recent comparative studies to identify vascular proteins that may play roles in long-distance signaling and other processes during stress responses in plants. In Arabidopsis, much of what we know about the phytohormone salicylic acid (SA) and its role in plant defense comes from experiments using young plants. We are interested in understanding why young plants are susceptible to virulent strains of Pseudomonas syringae, while mature plants exhibit a robust defense response known as age-related resistance (ARR). SA-mediated signaling is important for defense in young plants, however, ARR occurs independently of the defense regulators NPR1 and WHY1. Furthermore, intercellular SA accumulation is an important component of ARR, and intercellular washing fluids from ARR-competent plants exhibit antibacterial activity, suggesting that SA acts as an antimicrobial agent in the intercellular space. Young plants accumulate both intracellular and intercellular SA during PAMP- and effector-triggered immunity, however, virulent P. syringae promotes susceptibility by suppressing SA accumulation using the phytotoxin coronatine. Here we outline the hypothesis that mature, ARR-competent Arabidopsis alleviates coronatine-mediated suppression of SA accumulation. We also explore the role of SA in other mature-plant processes such as flowering and senescence, and discuss their potential impact on ARR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A whole-genome sequencing technique developed to identify fast neutron-induced deletion mutations revealed that iap1-1 is a new allele of EDS5 (eds5-5). RPS2-AvrRpt2-initiated effector-triggered immunity (ETI) was compromised in iap1-1/eds5-5 with respect to in planta bacterial levels and the hypersensitive response, while intra- and intercellular free salicylic acid (SA) accumulation was greatly reduced, suggesting that SA contributes as both an intracellular signaling molecule and an antimicrobial agent in the intercellular space during ETI. During the compatible interaction between wild-type Col-0 and virulent Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato (Pst), little intercellular free SA accumulated, which led to the hypothesis that Pst suppresses intercellular SA accumulation. When Col-0 was inoculated with a coronatine-deficient strain of Pst, high levels of intercellular SA accumulation were observed, suggesting that Pst suppresses intercellular SA accumulation using its phytotoxin coronatine. This work suggests that accumulation of SA in the intercellular space is an important component of basal/PAMP-triggered immunity as well as ETI to pathogens that colonize the intercellular space. Demand response programs help stabilize the electricity grid by providing monetary stimulus to consumers if they regulate their power consumption following market requirements. Regulation service, a market that requires participants to regulate power by following a signal updated every few seconds, is particularly beneficial to HPC data centers since data centers are capable of increasing/decreasing power consumption owing to the flexibility in running workloads and the availability of power control mechanisms. While prior works have explored how data centers can provide regulation service reserves, Quality-of-Service (QoS) provisioning for the jobs running at the data centers has not been considered. In this work, we propose an Adaptive policy with QoS Assurance that enables data centers to participate in regulation service programs with assurance on job QoS. Our policy regulates data center power through job scheduling and server power capping. QoS assurance is achieved by applying a queueing-theoretic result to our job scheduling strategy. We evaluate our policy by experiments on a real cluster. Our results demonstrate that the proposed policy reduces electricity costs by 25-56% while providing QoS assurance. On the other hand, the baseline policies cannot meet QoS constraints in 9 of the 14 workload traces tested.

Arabidopsis thaliana exhibits a developmentally regulated disease-resistance response known as age-related resistance (ARR), a process that requires intercellular accumulation of salicylic acid (SA), which is thought to act as an antimicrobial agent. ARR is characterized by enhanced resistance to some pathogens at the late adult-vegetative and reproductive stages. While the transition to flowering does not cause the onset of ARR, both processes involve the MADS-domain transcription factor SHORT VEGETATIVE PHASE (SVP). In this study, ARR-defective svp mutants were found to accumulate reduced levels of intercellular SA compared with wild type in response to Pseudomonas syringae pv. tomato. Double mutant and overexpression analyses suggest that SVP and SOC1 (SUPPRESSOR OF OVEREXPRESSION OF CO 1) act antagonistically, such that SVP is required for ARR to alleviate the negative effects of SOC1 on SA accumulation. In vitro, SA exhibited antibacterial and antibiofilm activity at concentrations similar to those measured in the intercellular space during ARR. In vivo, P. syringae pv. tomato formed biofilm-like aggregates in young susceptible plants, while this was drastically reduced in mature ARR-competent plants, which accumulate intercellular SA. Collectively, these results reveal a novel role for the floral regulators SVP and SOC1 in disease resistance and provide evidence that SA acts directly on pathogens as an antimicrobial agent.
