The process of creating and fostering an insiitution;il environment where everyone feels valued, welcomed und respected requires a change effort that must be comprehensive, systematic and continuous. This article will discuss the major management issues related to building and sustaining a diverse workforce in academic libraries. The management landscape surrounding diversity is dotted with political consent that is often at odds with judicial approval, but effective management of diversity in the academy requires close correlation between the two. And, this is not the case at present. This article will frame the issue in both social and legal terms, discuss the higher education context of the management issue, discuss diversity management in the academic library within the context of higher education, examine the lexicon of the issue, outline management strategies related to the issue, and draw a series of conclusions related to the management of diversity. The primary management concerns related to the establishment and maintenance of a culturally diverse workforce in academic libraries were examined. The wide-ranging authority on which higher education must continue to depend in constructing and sustaining diversity strategies for admissions and hiring is the academic freedom embodied in the First Amendment. Public policy on diversity must be based on enlightened self-interest, where by assisting others, people ultimately help themselves. Issues on affirmative action and diversity should be established such a philosophy instead of in terms of competing and individualistic rights.

The energy and azimuthal angle dependencies of the asymmetry of spin-polarized low-energy electrons ((00) beam) elastically scattered from a W(110) surface, have been studied before and after irradiated with slow Ar+ions with energies of 200 eV, 500 eV and 1 keV at a fluence of 5 × 1015ions/cm2. The energy dependence of the scattered electron asymmetries and intensities (for a fixed azimuthal angle of 55°, which is determined by the angle between the normal to the scattering plane and the [] direction in the surface of the W(110) crystal) and the azimuthal angle dependence of the asymmetry for two different incident electron energies of 14 eV and 23 eV showed a significant change after irradiation. The low-energy ion irradiation influenced the spin-polarized electron scattering more than the higher energy ions. The reason for the change of spin-dependent electron scattering is a quenching of coherent elastic multiple scattering, mainly due to lattice defects induced by implanted ions. Thus, these modifications demonstrate a technological way to construct spin-active interface with required properties. The agreement between experimental results and theoretical ones with and without multiple scattering provides a consistent explanation of the observations. [ABSTRACT FROM PUBLISHER]

Using spin-polarized single- and two-electron spectroscopy, we probe exchange and spin-orbit interaction in a double layer of Fe and Au on W(110) and measure the spin asymmetry of the Bloch spectral density function of the sample. In a 5 ML iron film, the spin-orbit contribution to the measured asymmetry of the (e,2e) spectra was not detectable, whereas a deposition of about 1 ML of gold introduced a substantial spin-orbit component in the measured asymmetry. At the same time, this double layer still exhibits ferromagnetic properties: (i) the spectral density function asymmetry demonstrate imbalance of spin-up and spin-down electron densities in the valence band and (ii) the Stoner excitation asymmetry has almost the same value as in a pure Fe film. While Zn vacancies are regarded as the charge compensators in Ti-rich Zn2 TiO4, no evidence of cation vacancies in essentially single-phase samples containing up to 13 wt% excess TiO2 was evident from positron annihilation lifetime spectroscopy (PALS). Nor was there strong evidence of cation vacancies in Ta-doped samples targeted to contain either tetrahedral or octahedral vacancies, although there was a small increase in the lifetime as the doping level increased and the structure changed from cubic to tetragonal. Spin-polarized electron energy loss spectroscopy was applied to study the intensity asymmetry upon the reversal of the incident spin polarization of elastically and inelastically scattered polarized electrons from an epitaxial ferromagnetic Fe layer on W(110). The polarization of the incident beam was always collinear with the magnetic moment (magnetization) of the sample, and the asymmetries were measured for two opposite magnetizations of the sample. They allowed extracting the exchange and the spin-orbit components from the measured asymmetry. A strong asymmetry of Stoner excitations in an Fe film on W(110) is observed, as expected, at about 3 eV energy loss. The value of the asymmetry declines but is still observable when the surface is contaminated. The asymmetry of elastic scattering for normal incidence and a 50° detection angle is close to zero in contrast to the Stoner excitation asymmetry (inelastic scattering). However, the asymmetry of elastic scattering increases substantially at two specular geometries with 25° and 72° angles of incidence, compared to the normal incidence, and may be even larger than the asymmetry of Stoner excitations. The sign of elastic scattering asymmetry changes upon the reversal of the sample magnetization, indicating the magnetic origin of this asymmetry, i.e., spin-dependent electron-electron scattering with electron exchange. The calculation of the asymmetry of elastic spin-polarized electron scattering from a spin-dependent surface potential barrier shows a qualitative agreement with the measurements. E-cigarettes are typically lithium-ion battery-operated devices that simulate smoking by heating a nicotine-solution into a vapor that the user inhales. E-cigarette use is becoming rapidly popular as an alternative to traditional cigarette smoking. This report describes an emerging problem associated with e-cigarettes, consisting of 10 thermally injured patients seen at a single burn center over a 2-year period from 2014 to 2016. Our cohort was comprised mainly of young adults who sustained mixed partial and full thickness burns as a result of e-cigarette-related explosions. In many documented scenarios, a malfunctioning or over-heated battery is the cause. Our data support the need for increased awareness among healthcare providers and the general public of the potential harms of e-cigarette use, modification, storage, and charging.

Introduction: Burn wounds are a significant cause of morbidity and mortality, and improved outcomes are demonstrated with early closure of both primary burn wounds and skin donor sites. Thus, technology that decreases the healing time of burns and donor sites would be potentially lifesaving. We present the results of a single-center, prospective, double-blinded, randomized controlled trial to evaluate the efficacy of silver-coated dressing with active microcurrent in comparison to silver-coated dressing with sham microcurrent on wound-closure time for autogenous skin donor sites., Methods: Four hundred five patients were screened for treatment of their donor sites using a silver-coated nylon dressing with either sham or active microcurrent stimulation. Thirty patients were enrolled in the study and then randomized. Of these, 5 patients were removed from analysis due to protocol deviations. Differences in time-to-closure were analyzed using Kaplan-Meier analysis and the proportional hazard regression model. Subjective verbal pain rating scores (0-10; 0, no pain; 10, worst pain) were also recorded. All devices were blinded and programmed at an outside facility, so that every patient had either an active or sham device. The study was unblinded only after the final patient's donor site had healed. All patients achieved donor-site healing before postoperative day 20. The 14 patients in the active microcurrent group [mean, 10.8 (2.9) days; range, 7-15 days] experienced no difference in time to wound healing as compared to the remaining patients in the sham microcurrent group [mean, 11.1 (2.0) days; range, 8-14 days; P = 0.75]. There were no differences in pain from one group compared to the other. None of the donor sites exhibited clinical signs of infection., Conclusions: In a sample size of 25 burn patients, the addition of direct microcurrent to silver-nylon dressings did not decrease time to wound closure of skin donor sites, and it did not show a difference in reported pain levels.
