22. High-performance photon-driven DC motor system

Abstract

Abstract Direct current (DC) motors are crucial in drones, robotics, and electrical devices. Conventionally, the DC motor is driven by a switching electricity converter, which utilizes electrical energy to drive mechanical motion. However, the rapid on-off switching actions in the switching electricity converter would cause electromagnetic interference (EMI), impairing the functionality of drive systems. Here, we propose a photon-driven DC motor system based on photonic converter, which utilizes optical energy to drive mechanical motion, and therefore avoids EMI derived from electrical switching and immunizes against EMI during electrical energy transmission in conventional switching electricity-driven DC motor system. The operation principle and power modulation-based speed control are also presented for the proposed photon-driven DC motor system. The experiments demonstrate that the motor accurately follows the speed reference and withstands load disturbances. This innovation opens new potential for DC motor applications by improving electromagnetic compatibility.

Abstract

Abstract Objective Customized nonabsorbable membranes are widely used in severe alveolar bone defects and provide sufficient and precise regenerated bone tissue for subsequent dental implant placement. Although 3D-printed polyetheretherketone (PEEK) meshes have confirmed successful use in clinical cases, the performance of a PEEK mesh is not satisfactory. Compared with PEEK, polyetherketoneketone (PEKK) has better mechanical and processing properties. However, whether PEKK is suitable for making customized membranes remains unclear. The objectives of this study were (1) to evaluate the printing precision, surface characteristics, mechanical characteristics and biocompatibility of the PEKK mesh and (2) to compare the properties of the PEKK and PEEK meshes. Materials and methods Both PEKK and PEEK meshes were designed and manufactured via additive manufacturing technology combined with computer-aided design (CAD). The printing precision was evaluated with a high-resolution extraoral scanner. The surface characteristics were evaluated with a contact angle system and three-dimensional optical microscopy. The mechanical characteristics were evaluated via three-point bending tests and tensile tests. The biocompatibility was evaluated with a CCK-8 assay, live/dead viability assay and qRT-PCT. Results Compared with the PEEK mesh, the PEKK mesh exhibited better control in terms of the thickness and aperture area. Both the PEKK mesh and the PEEK mesh had a hydrophobic surface, but the PEKK mesh had a smoother surface. Compared with the PEEK mesh, the PEKK mesh has better compression and tensile properties. Both the PEKK mesh and the PEEK mesh had good biocompatibility. The proliferation of cells on the PEKK mesh was slightly lower than that on the PEEK mesh. Conclusions Compared with PEEK mesh, PEKK mesh has greater printing accuracy, smoother surfaces, better mechanical properties and similar biocompatibility and is expected to be used in the production of customized barrier membranes for the augmentation of severe bone defects. To ensure the stability of the mesh for clinical application, it is best to control the aperture diameter of the PEKK mesh to less than 2 mm with a thickness of 0.2 μm.

Abstract

Abstract Bile acids (BAs) exert a profound influence on the body’s pathophysiology by intricately shaping the composition of gut bacteria. However, the complex interplay between BAs and gut microbiota has impeded a systematic exploration of their impact on intestinal bacteria. Initially, we investigated the effects of 21 BAs on the growth of 65 gut bacterial strains in vitro. Subsequently, we examined the impact of BAs on the overall composition of intestinal bacteria, both in vivo and in vitro. The results unveiled distinct effects of various BAs on different intestinal strains and their diverse impacts on the composition of gut bacteria. Mechanistically, the inhibition of intestinal strains by BAs occurs through the accumulation of these acids within the strains. The intracellular accumulation of deoxycholic acid (DCA) significantly influenced the growth of intestinal bacteria by impacting ribosome transcription and amino-acid metabolism. The metabolomic analysis underscores the pronounced impact of DCA on amino-acid profiles in both in vivo and in vitro settings. This study not only elucidates the effects of BAs on a diverse range of bacterial strains and their role in shaping the gut microbiota but also reveals underlying mechanisms essential for understanding and maintaining a healthy gut microbiota.

Abstract Metal-oxide interfaces with poor coherency have specific properties comparing to bulk materials and offer broad applications in heterogeneous catalysis, battery, and electronics. However, current understanding of the three-dimensional (3D) atomic metal-oxide interfaces remains limited because of their inherent structural complexity and the limitations of conventional two-dimensional imaging techniques. Here, we determine the 3D atomic structure of metal-oxide interfaces in zirconium-zirconia nanoparticles using atomic-resolution electron tomography. We quantitatively analyze the atomic concentration and the degree of oxidation, and find the coherency and translational symmetry of the interfaces are broken. Atoms at the interface have low structural ordering, low coordination, and elongated bond length. Moreover, we observe porous structures such as Zr vacancies and nano-pores, and investigate their distribution. Our findings provide a clear 3D atomic picture of metal-oxide interface with direct experimental evidence. We anticipate this work could encourage future studies on fundamental problems of oxides, such as interfacial structures in semiconductor and atomic motion during oxidation process.

Abstract

Abstract Background Our facial skin hosts millions of microorganisms, primarily bacteria, crucial for skin health by maintaining the physical barrier, modulating immune response, and metabolizing bioactive materials. Aging significantly influences the composition and function of the facial microbiome, impacting skin immunity, hydration, and inflammation, highlighting potential avenues for interventions targeting aging-related facial microbes amidst changes in skin physiological properties. Results We conducted a multi-center and deep sequencing survey to investigate the intricate interplay of aging, skin physio-optical conditions, and facial microbiome. Leveraging a newly-generated dataset of 2737 species-level metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs), our integrative analysis highlighted aging as the primary driver, influencing both facial microbiome composition and key skin characteristics, including moisture, sebum production, gloss, pH, elasticity, and sensitivity. Further mediation analysis revealed that skin characteristics significantly impacted the microbiome, mostly as a mediator of aging. Utilizing this dataset, we uncovered two consistent cutotypes across sampling cities and identified aging-related microbial MAGs. Additionally, a Facial Aging Index (FAI) was formulated based on the microbiome, uncovering the cutotype-dependent effects of unhealthy lifestyles on skin aging. Finally, we distinguished aging related microbial pathways influenced by lifestyles with cutotype-dependent effect. Conclusions Together, our findings emphasize aging’s central role in facial microbiome dynamics, and support personalized skin microbiome interventions by targeting lifestyle, skin properties, and aging-related microbial factors.
