The slow non-radiative surface recombination velocity of gallium nitride (GaN) in combination with its highly efficient radiative recombination makes this material ideally suited for microLEDs with dimensions as small as 1 µ m and even below, serving as the fundamental building block of micro-displays. However, due to their superior miniaturization potential and energy efficiency, GaN-based microLEDs have applications that extend well beyond display technology. Their capability to produce optical patterns with high resolution, which can be modulated at extremely high frequencies, makes them suitable for numerous other applications. We suggest exploiting these exciting properties for a new and potentially equally significant application: utilizing microLEDs in optical processing units for artificial intelligence workloads. In neuromorphic computing, relevant aspects of biological neural networks are emulated directly with either electronic circuits or photonic devices, avoiding the shortcomings of conventional digital computer technology for AI workloads, which generally require massively parallel information processing. GaN microLEDs are discussed here as a promising enabling technology for optical neuromorphic processing units. We see great potential to substantially decrease power consumption through massively parallel in-memory processing combined with efficient photon production and detection. A theoretical analysis of scalability and energy efficiency is provided. A macroscopic bench-top optical microLED demonstrator is presented, which experimentally proves the feasibility of our approach. Future potential and challenges associated with miniaturizing and scaling microLED-based optical processing units are discussed. Finally, we summarize the open research questions that require attention before fully functional and miniaturized optical neuromorphic processing units based on GaN microLEDs can be realized.

IntroductionMycoplasma anserisalpingitidis is one of the most important waterfowl-pathogenic mycoplasmas. Due to inadequate antibiotic treatment, many strains with high minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC) values for multiple drugs have been isolated lately. Decreased antibiotic susceptibility in several Mycoplasma species are known to be associated with mutations in topoisomerase and ribosomal genes, but other strategies such as active efflux pump mechanisms were also described. The scope of this study was the phenotypic and genetic characterization of the active efflux mechanism in M. anserisalpingitidisMethodsWe measured the MIC values in the presence and absence of different efflux pump inhibitors (EPIs), such as carbonyl cyanide m-chlorophenylhydrazine (CCCP), orthovanadate (OV), and reserpine (RSP). Moreover, bioinformatic tools were utilized to detect putative regulatory sequences of membrane transport proteins coding genes, while comparative genome analysis was performed to reveal potential markers of antibiotic resistance.ResultsOut of the three examined EPIs, CCCP decreased the MICs at least two-fold below the original MICs (in 23 cases out of 36 strains). In the presence of OV or RSP, MIC value differences could be seen only if modified dilution series (10% decrease steps were used instead of two-fold dilutions) were applied (in 24/36 cases with OV and 9/36 with RSP). During comparative genome analysis, non-synonymous single nucleotide polymorphisms (nsSNPs) were identified in genes encoding ABC membrane transport proteins, which were displayed in higher percentages in M. anserisalpingitidis strains with increased MICs. In terms of other genes, a nsSNP was identified in DNA gyrase subunit A (gyrA) gene which can be related to decreased susceptibility to enrofloxacin. The present study is the first to highlight the importance of efflux pump mechanisms in M. anserisalpingitidis.DiscussionConsidering the observed effects of the EPI CCCP against this bacterium, it can be assumed, that the use of EPIs would increase the efficiency of targeted antibiotic therapy in the future control of this pathogen. However, further research is required to obtain a more comprehensive understanding of efflux pump mechanism in this bacterium.

Maintaining vacuum integrity for the semiconductor manufacturing processes is extremely important to improve semiconductor fab productivity. The expensive machinery and the enormous costs of production downtime require reliable sealing systems which are designed to operate the longest possible preventative maintenance (PM) cycles. Being able to predict the lifetime of the sealing systems can help determine the optimum maintenance periods and hence increase profitability in costly wafer processing. The present contribution describes a finite element method to predict the lifetime of vacuum sealing systems limited by aging effects of the elastomer. Several different applications are considered including isothermal and non-isothermal conditions. Furthermore, homogeneous and inhomogeneous temperature fields are analyzed. The aim of the present study was to monitor the dynamics and to measure the safety and efficacy of a live, attenuated, thermosensitive Mycoplasma anserisalpingitidis vaccine candidate, namely MA271, in geese breeder flocks under field conditions. Two rearing flocks were vaccinated with MA271 at 4 weeks of age and boosted at 24 weeks of age by cloaca inoculation (1 ml) and eye-dropping (60 µl). The geese then were transported to multi-aged breeding farms. Two breeding flocks served as controls. Colonization of the cloaca by MA271 showed 75% maximum prevalence between 4 and 6 weeks after the first vaccination. Then the prevalence decreased to 25% until the cooler, humid fall months which coincided with the booster vaccination. Boosting raised cloacal colonization to 100%. No clinical signs were observed in the vaccinated birds. After transportation to five multi-aged breeding farms, the wild-type strain appeared as well as MA271 in three flocks. In one flock, the wild-type strain completely displaced MA271, while in one flock only MA271 was detected. Only wild-type strains were detected in the control flocks; however, due to an HPAI outbreak, both flocks were exterminated before the end of the study. Based on the available data, the median percentage of infertile eggs was 3.7-5.1% in the MA271 vaccinated flocks, and 7.7% in the non-vaccinated flock. In conclusion, MA271 can colonize the cloaca of geese under field conditions. MA271 proved to be safe and presumably protects against M. anserisalpingitidis-induced reproduction losses. In preparation for the SPISE 8 workshop around the turn of the year 2022/2023, again a survey in the European Member States and other countries in Europe was carried out. The aim of this survey was to compile information concerning the actual situation of the inspection of pesticide application equipment PAE in use and this time especially the occurrence of problems connected to the implementation of an inspection system. BackgroundThere is growing evidence that technology-based interventions (TBIs) are effective for the treatment of depression. As TBIs are gaining acceptance, a question arises whether good therapeutic alliance, considered a key aspect of psychotherapy, can be established without or with minimal face-to-face contact or rather changes if blended concepts are applied. While therapeutic alliance has been studied extensively in the context of face-to-face therapy, only few studies have reviewed evidence on alliance ratings in TBIs. ObjectiveThe purpose of this study was to examine therapeutic alliance in technology-based psychological interventions for the treatment of depression. MethodsWe searched Cochrane Central Register of Controlled Trials (CENTRAL), MEDLINE, PsycINFO, PSYNDEX, CINAHL, clinical trial registers, and sources of grey literature for randomized controlled trials on TBIs in the treatment of adults with unipolar depression. All publications were selected according to prespecified criteria. Data were extracted by two independent reviewers. ResultsA total of eight out of 98 studies (9.5%) included in the review on TBIs for depression considered therapeutic alliance as part of their evaluation. The available data covered eight different treatment conditions, including four stand-alone treatments (face-to-face psychotherapy, email, telephone, and internet program) and four combined treatments (face-to-face psychotherapy plus a smartphone app and an internet program combined with face-to-face psychotherapy, treatment as usual, or email/telephone). On average, patients rated the alliance positively across all groups. Importantly, no relevant group differences regarding therapeutic alliance sum scores were found in any of the studies. Five studies investigated the relationship between patients’ alliance ratings and treatment outcome, revealing mixed results. ConclusionsOur results suggest that it is possible to establish a positive therapeutic alliance across a variety of different TBIs for depression, but this is based on a small number of studies. Future research needs to determine on what basis therapeutic alliance is formed in settings that do not allow for additional nonverbal cues, perhaps with adapted instruments to measure therapeutic alliance. Mechanical properties of insect wings are essential for insect flight aerodynamics. During wing flapping, wings may undergo tremendous deformations, depending on the wings’ spatial stiffness distribution. We here show an experimental evaluation of wing stiffness in three species of flies using a micro-force probe and an imaging method for wing surface reconstruction. Vertical deflection in response to point loads at 11 characteristic points on the wing surface reveals that average spring stiffness of bending lines between wing hinge and point loads varies ∼77-fold in small fruit flies and up to ∼28-fold in large blowflies. The latter result suggests that local wing deformation depends to a considerable degree on how inertial and aerodynamic forces are distributed on the wing surface during wing flapping. Stiffness increases with an increasing body mass, amounting to ∼0.6 Nm−1 in fruit flies, ∼0.7 Nm−1 in house flies and ∼2.6 Nm−1 in blowflies for bending lines, running from the wing base to areas near the center of aerodynamic pressure. Wings of house flies have a ∼1.4-fold anisotropy in mean stiffness for ventral versus dorsal loading, while anisotropy is absent in fruit flies and blowflies. We present two numerical methods for calculation of local surface deformation based on surface symmetry and wing curvature. These data demonstrate spatial deformation patterns under load and highlight how veins subdivide wings into functional areas. Our results on wings of living animals differ from previous experiments on detached, desiccated wings and help to construct more realistic mechanical models for testing the aerodynamic consequences of specific wing deformations.

Besides high-power light-emitting diodes (LEDs) with dimensions in the range of mm, micro-LEDs (μLEDs) are increasingly gaining interest today, motivated by the future applications of μLEDs in augmented reality displays or for nanometrology and sensor technology. A key aspect of this miniaturization is the influence of the structure size on the electrical and optical properties of μLEDs. Thus, in this article, investigations of the size dependence of the electro-optical properties of μLEDs, with diameters in the range of 20 to 0.65 μm, by current–voltage and electroluminescence measurements are described. The measurements indicated that with decreasing size leakage currents in the forward direction decrease. To take advantage of these benefits, the surface has to be treated properly, as otherwise sidewall damages induced by dry etching will impair the optical properties. A possible countermeasure is surface treatment with a potassium hydroxide based solution that can reduce such defects.

Abstract Background Cannabis use is associated with an attention-dependent deficit in prepulse inhibition of the startle reflex (PPI). The aim of the current study was to investigate startle habituation in cannabis users and healthy controls during two attentional tasks. Methods Auditory startle reflex was recorded from orbicularis oculi muscle while participants (12 controls and 16 regular cannabis users) were either attending to or ignoring 100 dB startling pulses. Startle habituation was measured as the absolute reduction in startle magnitude on block 2 (last nine trials) vs. block 1 (first nine trials). Results Startle habituation with moderate effect sizes was observed in controls and cannabis users only while they were ignoring the startling pulses but not while they were attending to them. Similar results were also observed in controls (lifetime non-users of cannabis) and cannabis users with lifetime cannabis use disorders (CUD). Conclusion Startle habituation appears to depend on selective attention but not on cannabis use. Startle habituation was present when attention was directed away from auditory startling pulses in healthy controls and cannabis users. Such a similar pattern of results in both groups suggests that at least a trend exists towards presence of startle habituation regardless of cannabis use or CUD in otherwise healthy members of the general population.

The shape and function of insect wings tremendously vary between insect species. This review is engaged in how wing design determines the aerodynamic mechanisms with which wings produce an air momentum for body weight support and flight control. We work out the tradeoffs associated with aerodynamic key parameters such as vortex development and lift production, and link the various components of wing structure to flight power requirements and propulsion efficiency. A comparison between rectangular, ideal-shaped and natural-shaped wings shows the benefits and detriments of various wing shapes for gliding and flapping flight. The review expands on the function of three-dimensional wing structure, on the specific role of wing corrugation for vortex trapping and lift enhancement, and on the aerodynamic significance of wing flexibility for flight and body posture control. The presented comparison is mainly concerned with wings of flies because these animals serve as model systems for both sensorimotor integration and aerial propulsion in several areas of biology and engineering.

Waterfowl-specific mycoplasmas cause significant economic losses worldwide. However, only limited resources are available for the specific detection of three such bacteria, Mycoplasma anatis, M. anseris and M. cloacale. We developed species-specific TaqMan assays and tested their reliability across 20 strains of the respective target species as well as 84 non-target avian bacterial strains. Furthermore, we analysed 32 clinical DNA samples and compared the results with those of previously published conventional PCRs. The TaqMan assays showed 100% specificity and very high sensitivity, enabling the detection of target DNA as low as either 10 or 100 copies/μl concentration, depending on the assay. Importantly, we found that while the here developed TaqMan assays are reliable for species-specific detection of M. anatis, the previously published conventional PCR assay may give false positive results. In conclusion, the new assays are reliable, sensitive and suitable for clinical diagnostics of the target species. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

O que significa um parque para Brasilândia na região norte do município de São Paulo? Este trabalho apresenta as digressões teóricas que foram permitidas ao longo do desenvolvimento de proposta para o Parque Municipal da Brasilândia. O distrito possui uma porção de área verde alvo de campanhas para transformação em parque. A proposta aqui discutida tem como diretriz o enraizamento do parque no bairro como estratégia para assegurar sua inserção como espaço físico e simbólico. Para isso são sugeridas novas relações entre o espaço construído e a área verde, utilizando-se das oportunidades encontradas na estrutura da cidade informal para entrelaçar espaço construído e zonas de natureza, tempo de lazer e vida cotidiana. O projeto apresentado utiliza-se de soluções de manejo das águas urbanas baseadas nos princípios de Melhores Práticas de Manejo (MPM) e Desenvolvimento de Baixo Impacto (Low Impact Development – LID), numa tentativa de melhorar a relação entre o espaço construído e a base biofísica, e da proposta da Borda de Amabilidades como costura suave entre o uso urbano e o espaço de proteção à vida natural.

Honey bees are important model systems for the investigation of learning and memory and for a better understanding of the neuronal basics of brain function. Honey bees also possess a rich repertoire of tones and sounds, from queen piping and quacking to worker hissing and buzzing. In this study, we tested whether the worker bees' sounds can be used as a measure of learning. We therefore conditioned honey bees aversively to odours in a walking arena and recorded both their sound production and their movement. Bees were presented with two odours, one of which was paired with an electric shock. Initially, the bees did not produce any sound upon odour presentation, but responded to the electric shock with a strong hissing response. After learning, many bees hissed at the presentation of the learned odour, while fewer bees hissed upon presentation of another odour. We also found that hissing and movement away from the conditioned odour are independent behaviours that can co-occur but do not necessarily do so. Our data suggest that hissing can be used as a readout for learning after olfactory conditioning, but that there are large individual differences between bees concerning their hissing reaction. The basis for this variability and the possible ecological relevance of the bees' hissing remain to be investigated.

Mycoplasma anserisalpingitidis is economically the most important pathogenic Mycoplasma species of waterfowl in Europe and Asia. The lack of commercially available vaccines against M. anserisalpingitidis had prompted this study with the aim to produce temperature-sensitive (ts+) clones as candidates for an attenuated live vaccine. The production of ts+ clones was performed by N-methyl-N′-nitro-N-nitrosoguanidine (NTG)-induced mutagenesis of Hungarian M. anserisalpingitidis field isolates. The clones were administered via eye-drop and intracloacally to 33-day-old geese. Colonization ability was examined by PCR and isolation from the trachea and cloaca, while the serological response of the birds was tested by ELISA. Pathological and histopathological examinations were performed in the eighth week after inoculation. Whole-genome sequence (WGS) analysis of the selected clone and its parent strain was also performed. NTG-treatment provided three ts+ mutants (MA177/1/11, MA177/1/12, MA271). MA271 was detected at the highest rate from cloacal (86.25%) and tracheal (30%) samples, while MA177/1/12 and MA271 elicited remarkable serological responses with 90% of the birds showing seroconversion. Re-isolates of MA271 remained ts+ throughout the experiment. Based on these properties, clone MA271 was found to be the most promising vaccine candidate. WGS analysis revealed 59 mutations in the genome of MA271 when compared to its parent strain, affecting both polypeptides involved in different cellular processes and proteins previously linked to bacterial fitness and virulence. Although further studies are needed to prove that MA271 is in all aspects a suitable vaccine strain, it is expected that this ts+ clone will contribute to the control of M. anserisalpingitidis infection. RESEARCH HIGHLIGHTS Three M. anserisalpingitidis ts+ vaccine candidates were produced by NTG-mutagenesis. Clone MA271 was able to colonize geese and induce a serological response. Pulsed sputter deposition has been demonstrated to be a viable process for the growth of high quality GaN and InGaN/GaN LEDs. It enables the fabrication of nitride LEDs with a red emission wavelength at large areas. In this study, we explore details on the epitaxial sputter deposition of GaN with a particular emphasis on ion damage. By changing the argon to nitrogen ratio, we adjust the growth mode from island to layer growth. TEM revealed speckles in the epitaxial GaN, which could be identified as isolated basal stacking faults, acting as non-radiative recombination centers. Using Monte Carlo methods, we modeled the energies of backscattered and sputtered atoms in order to get information on the ion damage mechanisms. Considering the collisions on the way from the target to the substrate, we found energetic nitrogen to induce the speckles. A shielding mechanism based on metallic gallium has been identified, leading to the strongly increased luminescence quality in comparison to the non-shielded material. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Im März 2012 fand in Lana (Südtirol) der SPISE 4-Workshop statt, an dem mehr als 100 Teilnehmer aus 29 europäischen Ländern teilnahmen. Der Workshop wurde organisiert von der SPISE Working Group (SWG), der Ver­treter aus Belgien, Frankreich, Italien, den Niederlanden und Deutschland angehören (http://spise.jki.bund.de/). Der SPISE 4 Workshop hatte das Ziel, die Einführung der Überprüfung in Gebrauch befindlicher Pflanzenschutzgeräte (Kontrolle) in den Mitgliedstaaten der EU zu unterstützen. Mit der Veröffentlichung der Richtlinie 2009/128/EG im Oktober 2009 werden die Mitgliedstaaten verpflichtet, eine turnusmäßige technische Überprüfung für Pflanzenschutzgeräte einzuführen und sicherzustellen, dass bis spätestens 2016 alle beruflich eingesetzten Pflanzenschutzgeräte mindestens einmal überprüft worden sind. Die Richtlinie legt die wesentlichen Eckpunkte fest. Die Ausgestaltung der Verfahrensabläufe ist gemäß dem Subsidiaritätsprinzip den Mitgliedstaaten überlassen, die hierbei über einen großen Gestaltungsspielraum verfügen und eigene Erfahrungen und Gegebenheiten berücksichtigen können.
