While recent research has extensively explored the potential use of Virtual Reality (VR) in educational contexts, limited knowledge exists regarding teachers' willingness to further their understanding of VR and its applications in education. Therefore, this study aims to investigate how various demographic factors and attitudes toward VR influence educators' curiosity about this technology. Using the boosting classification machine-learning algorithm, we analyzed the responses of 324 educators from Europe and Eurasia. The findings reveal that the regularity of undergoing pedagogical training exerts the strongest influence on educators' interest in learning about VR technology, underscoring the importance of consistent training opportunities. Additionally, frequent personal testing and use of VR technology, along with the duration of professional education in pedagogy, significantly affect educators' curiosity. Age and gender identity also play influential roles, with older educators and males exhibiting greater curiosity. Notably, educators' awareness of VR technology has a relatively lower impact. Furthermore, the total years of teaching experience and prior use of VR technology in teaching have minimal effects on educators' curiosity. These findings emphasize the significance of providing high-quality pedagogical training to familiarize educators with VR technology and its potential benefits in educational settings, carrying substantial implications for policymakers.

Abstract Single wall carbon nanotubes (SWCNTs) functionalized with (bio-)polymers such as DNA are soluble in water and sense analytes by analyte-specific changes of their intrinsic fluorescence. Such SWCNT-based (bio-)sensors translate the binding of a molecule (molecular recognition) into a measurable optical signal. This signal transduction is crucial for all types of molecular sensors to achieve high sensitivities. Although there is an increasing number of SWCNT-based sensors, there is yet no molecular understanding of the observed changes in the SWCNT’s fluorescence. Here, we report THz experiments that map changes in the local hydration of the solvated SWCNT upon binding of analytes such as the neurotransmitter dopamine or the vitamin riboflavin. The THz amplitude signal serves as a measure of the coupling of charge fluctuations in the SWCNTs to the charge density fluctuations in the hydration layer. We find a linear (inverse) correlation between changes in THz amplitude and the intensity of the change in fluorescence induced by the analytes. Simulations show that the organic corona shapes the local water, which determines the exciton dynamics. Thus, THz signals are a quantitative predictor for signal transduction strength and can be used as a guiding chemical design principle for optimizing fluorescent biosensors.

A young person’s relationships, education, and body image can be influenced by their physical health, especially in the case of urinary or faecal incontinence. The importance of a multidisciplinary team to manage the unique challenges in this cohort is becoming increasingly recognised, especially as medical care advances and more chronic diseases are reaching adulthood. This workshop outlined the multifaceted approach to managing urinary or faecal incontinence in adolescent patients reviewing current evidence. It reviews physiology, clinical assessment and investigations, psychological considerations and both operative and non operative management options. It addresses gold standard treatments as well as general principles as guidance for management if in a region with limited assessment or treatment modalities. As patients transition from childhood, management of chronic conditions needs to adapt to their changing needs and goals, which requires a flexible armamentarium of options in order to individualise care for patients.

Background and aimThis study explores healthcare professionals’ perspectives on end-of-life care in pediatric intensive care units (ICUs) in Croatia, aiming to illuminate their experiences with such practices, underlying attitudes, and major decision-making considerations. Amid the high variability, complexity, and emotional intensity of pediatric end-of-life decisions and practices, understanding these perspectives is crucial for improving care and policies.MethodsThe study utilized a cross-sectional survey intended for physicians and nurses across all pediatric ICUs in Croatia. It included healthcare professionals from six neonatal and four pediatric ICUs in total. As the data from neonatal and pediatric ICUs were examined jointly, the term pediatric ICU was used to denominate both types of ICUs. A statistical analysis was performed using Python and JASP, focusing on professional roles, professional experience, and regional differences.ResultsThe study included a total of 103 participants (with an overall response rate—in relation to the whole target population—of 48% for physicians and 29% for nurses). The survey revealed diverse attitudes toward and experiences with various aspects of end-of-life care, with a significant portion of healthcare professionals indicating infrequent involvement in life-sustaining treatment (LST) limitation discussions and decisions, as well as somewhat ambiguous attitudes regarding such practices. Notably, discrepancies emerged between different professional roles and, in particular, regions, underscoring the high variability of LST limitation-related procedures.ConclusionsThe findings highlight a pressing need for more straightforward guidelines, legal frameworks, support mechanisms, and communication strategies to navigate the complex terrain of rather burdensome end-of-life pediatric care, which is intrinsically loaded with profound ethical quandaries.

Inflammatory bowel disease (IBD) is marked by chronic inflammation of the gastrointestinal tract and encompasses two major subtypes, Crohn’s disease (CD) and ulcerative colitis (UC). IBD is frequently accompanied by extraintestinal manifestations (EIMs), with axial and peripheral spondyloarthritis (SpA) being the most common. Enthesitis, an inflammation of the bone insertions of capsules, ligaments, and tendons, represents an initial lesion in SpA. However, enthesitis remains an underestimated and often obscured EIM. The early detection of subclinical entheseal involvement in IBD patients using ultrasound (US) could provide an opportunity for timely intervention. US is a more feasible and affordable approach than magnetic resonance imaging (MRI). While previous meta-analyses have reported on the incidence and prevalence of SpA in IBD, specific attention to enthesitis has been lacking. Therefore, this narrative review aims to assess the current knowledge on existing IBD-SpA cohorts, focusing specifically on enthesitis.

Contact dermatitis is a common inflammatory skin disease that often requires prescription therapy and is associated with adverse reactions. Omega fatty acids have been recognized for their anti-inflammatory effect and could serve as a safer option in contact dermatitis treatment. Therefore, the aim of this randomized controlled study, conducted at the University of Split School of Medicine, was to evaluate the efficacy and safety of omega fatty acids containing topical products in an experimental model of irritant contact dermatitis. This study was registered with ClinicalTrials (NCT06189144) and is closed. The primary outcomes were levels of transepidermal water loss, skin hydration, and skin erythema, all measured using an MPA6 device in 25 healthy participants. A significant difference was observed between the hydration values of the intervention (45.7 ± 12.4) and control groups (31.6 ± 12.3) (p < 0.05) on final measurements (day 10). Moreover, higher erythema levels were observed in participants who were smokers, compared to non-smokers. No adverse drug reactions were observed during the study period. In conclusion, omega fatty acids topical product use shows promise in the treatment of irritant contact dermatitis, and further studies are needed to evaluate efficacy in a larger sample of patients.

BackgroundHospital capacity strain impacts quality of care and hospital throughput and may also impact the well being of clinical staff and teams as well as their ability to do their job. Institutions have implemented a wide array of tactics to help manage hospital capacity strain with variable success.ObjectiveThrough qualitative interviews, our study explored interventions used to address hospital capacity strain and the perceived impact of these interventions, as well as how hospital capacity strain impacts patients, the workforce, and other institutional priorities.Design, setting, and participantsQualitative study utilizing semi-structured interviews at 13 large urban academic medical centers across the USA from June 21, 2019, to August 22, 2019 (pre-COVID-19). Interviews were recorded, professionally transcribed verbatim, coded, and then analyzed using a mixed inductive and deductive method at the semantic level.Main outcome measuresThemes and subthemes of semi-structured interviews were identified.ResultsTwenty-nine hospitalist leaders and hospital leaders were interviewed. Across the 13 sites, a multitude of provider, care team, and institutional tactics were implemented with perceived variable success. While there was some agreement between hospitalist leaders and hospital leaders, there was also some disagreement about the perceived successes of the various tactics deployed. We found three main themes: (1) hospital capacity strain is complex and difficult to predict, (2) the interventions that were perceived to have worked the best when facing strain were to ensure appropriate resources; however, less costly solutions were often deployed and this may lead to unanticipated negative consequences, and (3) hospital capacity strain and the tactics deployed may negatively impact the workforce and can lead to conflict.ConclusionsWhile institutions have employed many different tactics to manage hospital capacity strain and see this as a priority, tactics seen as having the highest yield are often not the first employed.

Little is known about how math anxiety in parents may relate to engagement in their children's education (i.e., parent involvement, parent educational expectations) or children's math outcomes (i.e., child math achievement and child math anxiety). The current exploratory study examined these relations between parents and their fifth grade children. The results indicate that parents with any reported math anxiety engaged in statistically less home-school conferencing, home-based involvement, and held lower educational expectations. Parent educational expectations mediated the relation between parent math anxiety and both child math anxiety and child achievement. These results suggest that parent math anxiety can unintentionally influence how parents engage in behaviors that matter to schools. Furthermore, educational expectations may be a more important intervention target than parent math anxiety to support parents in their educational engagement. Our findings have implications for researchers and school-based practitioners interested in better understanding how to support all parents with math anxiety.

The European Union has established a legislative framework that aims to enable consumers and businesses to take information-based decisions to save energy and money. Additionally, the increase of Distributed Energy Resources (both on generation and consumption) requires additional efforts to maintain the reliability and stability of the electric grid and the need of flexibility from residential buildings. The present study introduces a domestic decision support tool for reducing heating costs. This app provides detailed recommendations to end-users based on the day-ahead hourly weather forecast, electric and district heating tariffs predictions, heating demand, and heating systems dynamic performance. The tool was tested in 6 dwellings of a neighborhood of Belgrade during the last months of 2021 heating season (March–May). Energetic results suggest that 40% of participants followed the given recommendations and changed their heating pattern. Additionally, survey results show that end-users found the lack of information and knowledge as the main barrier to actively participate in the energy market, also preferring to have automatic control in their heating system. Authors conclude that recommendation tools are key elements in user-engagement, but they should be supported by additional information and training.

Abstract Background In Europe, data on population health is fragmented, difficult to access, project-based and prone to health information inequalities in terms of availability, accessibility and especially in quality between and within countries. This situation is further exacerbated and exposed by the recent COVID-19 pandemic. The Joint Action on Health Information (InfAct) that builds on previous works of the BRIDGE Health project, carried out collaborative action to set up a sustainable infrastructure for health information in the European Union (EU). The aim of this paper is to present InfAct’s proposal for a sustainable research infrastructure, the Distributed Infrastructure on Population Health (DIPoH), which includes the setup of a Health Information Portal on population health to be maintained beyond InfAct’s time span. Methods The strategy for the proposal was based on three components: scientific initiatives and proposals to improve Health Information Systems (HIS), exploration of technical acceptability and feasibility, and finally obtaining high-level political support.. The technical exploration (Technical Dialogues—TD) was assumed by technical experts proposed by the countries, and political guidance was provided by the Assembly of Members (AoM), which gathered representatives from Ministries of Health and Science of EU/EEA countries. The results from the AoM and the TD were integrated in the sustainability plan compiling all the major outputs of InfAct. Results The InfAct sustainability plan was organized in three main sections: a proposal of a new research infrastructure on population health (the DIPoH), new health information tools and innovative proposals for HIS, and a comprehensive capacity building programme. These activities were carried out in InfAct and are being further developed in the Population Health Information Research Infrastructure (PHIRI). PHIRI is a practical rollout of DIPoH facilitating and generating the best available evidence for research on health and wellbeing of populations as impacted by COVID-19. Conclusions The sustainability plan received wide support from Member States and was recognized to have an added value at EU level. Nevertheless, there were several aspects which still need to be considered for the near future such as: (i) a commitment of stable financial and political support by Member States (MSs), (ii) the availability of resources at regional, national and European level to deal with innovations, and (iii) a more direct involvement from EU and international institutions such as the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC), the World Health Organization (WHO) and the Organisation for Economic Cooperation and Development OECD for providing support and sustainable contributions.

Purpose: Leisure-time physical activity (LTPA) has always been very important for the maintenance and improvement of body composition. Thus, the aim of this study was to examine if the frequency and volume of LTPA (F-LTPA and V-LTPA) were related to indices of body composition in police officers. Method: A physical activity questionnaire was used to collect data from 346 male police officers regarding their F-LTPA and V-LTPA. They were divided into four groups relative to the frequency, and four groups relative to the volume of LTPA, labeled as inactive, seldom active, moderately active and very active for each LTPA indicator. Percent body fat (PBF), skeletal muscle mass (PSMM), skeletal muscle mass index (SMMI) and body fat mass index (BFMI) were assessed. Correlation analyses investigated associations and multivariate analysis of variance analysed the differences between body composition and LTPA, with significance set at p < 0.05. Results: The F-LTPA correlated (p < 0.001) to PBF (r = -0.306), BFMI (r = -0.289), PSMM (r = 0.309) and SMMI (r = -0.138, p = 0.010). The V-LTPA correlated (p < 0.001) to PBF (r = -0.370), BFMI (r = -0.348), PSMM (r = 0.311), and SMMI (r = -0.106, p = 0.049). The differences that occurred between more and less active police officers, whereby those who were very active had lower values of PBF and BFMI and higher values of PSMM and SMMI regardless of the frequency and volume of LTPA. PBF and PSMM were more affected by LTPA than SMMI and BFMI. Conclusions: F-LTPA and V-LTPA were considered important for police officers, whereby F-LTPA was related to muscle and V-LTPA to fat parameters of body composition.
