12. A Comparison of Key Essential Nutrients in Commercial Plant-Based Pet Foods Sold in Canada to American and European Canine and Feline Dietary Recommendations

Abstract

Plant-based foods intended for feeding dogs and cats are available in Canada, though few studies have examined the suitability of plant-based foods for dogs and cats. All commercial plant-based extruded and wet pet food products available in Ontario, Canada, in 2018 (n = 26) were acquired and analysed for energy, crude protein, crude fat, crude fibre, ash, amino acids, fatty acids, minerals and vitamins A, B12, D2 and D3. Results were compared with recommendations of the Association of American Feed Control Officials (AAFCO) and the European Pet Food Industry Federation (FEDIAF). Thirteen products were labelled for adult canine maintenance, four for canine all life stages, one for puppy growth, two for adult feline maintenance, three for feline all life stages, one for adult maintenance of dogs and cats and two for all life stages of dogs and cats. Four products met AAFCO and one product met FEDIAF nutrient recommendations for canine maintenance. No diets met AAFCO or FEDIAF recommendations for feline maintenance or growth for either species. Nutrients most commonly found insufficient were: sulfur amino acids, taurine, arachidonic acid, EPA and DHA, calcium phosphorus and vitamin D. There were no nutrients unable to be provided from non-animal sources. Compliance with labelling guidelines was also poor, similar to other findings with commercial animal-based pet products. The results from this study indicate areas where producers of plant-based pet foods must improve to meet the industry recommended nutrient profiles and labelling requirements.

13. Effectiveness of mHealth Interventions to Improve Pain Intensity and Functional Disability in Individuals With Hip or Knee Osteoarthritis: A Systematic Review and Meta-analysis.

Abstract

This review aimed to investigate the effectiveness of mHealth-supported active exercise interventions to reduce pain intensity and disability level in persons with hip or knee osteoarthritis (OA). Three databases (PubMed, Cochrane Library, and Web of Science) were systematically searched for randomized controlled trials (RCTs) published between January 1, 2012 and July 31, 2023. PROSPERO registration number of this review was CRD42023394119. We included only RCTs that were identified and screened by 2 independent reviewers (J.M. and G.N.). In addition, the reference lists of the identified studies were manually checked for further inclusion. Included studies had to provide mHealth-supported active exercises for persons with hip or knee OA, and evaluate pain intensity and disability using both questionnaires and performance tests. From the included studies, the 2 independent authors extracted data using a predetermined Excel form. Characteristics of the interventions were described and a meta-analysis was performed. Twelve RCTs were included, representing 1541 patients with a mean age of 58.7±5 years, and a body mass index of 28.8±3.1 kg/m2; women being more predominant than men with a total female to male ratio of 2.2. The methodological quality of the included studies was moderate in 75% of the studies. There was no statistically significant difference between mHealth-supported active exercises compared with the interventions without mHealth in terms of pain reduction (standard mean differences [SMD]=−0.42; 95% CI, −0.91 to 0.07; P =.08) and disability mitigation (SMD=−0.36; 95% CI, −0.81 to 0.09; P =.10). However, a statistically significant difference was found between patient education combined with mHealth-supported active exercises compared with patient education alone in terms of pain (SMD= −0.42; 95% CI, −0.61 to −0.22; P <.01) and disability (SMD=−0.27; 95% CI, −0.46 to −0.08; P <.01) reduction. mHealth-supported exercises were found to be effective, especially when combined with patient education, in reducing pain and mitigating disability in patients with hip or knee OA. Abstract

The evaluation of myocardial ischemia in patients with aortic valve stenosis (AS) with concomitant coronary artery disease (CAD) and possible microvascular dysfunction (MVD) is challenging because fractional flow reserve (FFR) and the resting full-cycle ratio (RFR) have not been validated in this clinical setting. The aims of this study in patients with AS and CAD were: 1) to describe the relationship between hyperemic and resting indexes; 2) to investigate the acute and long-term effects of aortic valve replacement (AVR) on epicardial indexes and microvascular function; 3) to assess the impact of these changes on clinical decision making; and 4) to determine FFR/RFR ischemia cutoff points in AS. In this prospective multicentric study, we performed serial measurements of FFR and RFR and evaluated MVD by means of coronary flow reserve, the index of microvascular resistance, and microvascular resistance reserve in patients with severe AS and intermediate to severe CAD before and 6 months after AVR. Patients underwent myocardial perfusion single-photon emission computed tomography before AVR. In total, 146 coronary lesions in 116 patients were included. Before AVR, we observed high FFR/RFR discordance according to standard cutoff values (FFR negative [>0.80]/RFR positive [≤0.89] in 42.3% [68/137] of these lesions). Acutely after AVR, FFR decreased significantly (−0.0120 ± 0.0192; P = 0.0045), whereas RFR remained stable (0.0140 ± 0.0673; P = 0.3089). Six months after AVR, FFR decreased (−0.0279 ± 0.0368), whereas RFR increased significantly (+0.0410 ± 0.0487) (P < 0.0001 for both), resulting in 21.5% (21/98) and 39.8% (39/98) of lesions crossing traditional FFR and RFR cutoff lines, respectively. Left ventricular mass decreased significantly (153.68 ± 44.22 g before vs 134.66 ± 37.26 g after; P < 0.0001). MVD was frequently observed at baseline (32.1% abnormal index of microvascular resistance and 68.6% abnormal microvascular resistance reserve) with all microvascular parameters improving after AVR. The most accurate cutoffs to predict ischemia were FFR ≤0.83 and RFR ≤0.85 with comparable accuracy (75%-80%). In patients with severe AS and CAD, FFR ≤0.83 and RFR ≤0.85 appear to predict myocardial ischemia more accurately. Six months after AVR, FFR decreases, whereas RFR increases significantly with a simultaneous decrease of left ventricular mass and an improvement of microvascular function. Feline obesity continues to be a priority health and welfare issue. Most research surrounding obesity currently focuses on obesity treatment. However, treatment for feline obesity is slow, often unsuccessful and not without consequences. Identifying high-risk populations for obesity onset is crucial for developing and implementing preventive strategies. This review identifies post-gonadectomy kittens aged 5–12 months as the primary target population for obesity prevention in domestic cats and highlights dietary and feeding management strategies to be implemented for obesity prevention.
