Geometric quantum gates are often expected to be more resilient than dynamical gates against certain types of error, which would make them ideal for robust quantum computing. However, this is still up for debate due to seemingly conflicting results in the literature. Here we use dynamical invariant theory in conjunction with filter functions in order to analytically characterize the noise sensitivity of an arbitrary quantum gate. For any control Hamiltonian that produces a geometric gate, we find that, under certain common conditions, one can construct another control Hamiltonian that produces an equivalent dynamical gate with identical noise sensitivity (as characterized by the filter function). Our result holds for a Hilbert space of arbitrary dimensions, but we illustrate our result by examining experimentally relevant single-qubit scenarios and providing explicit examples of equivalent geometric and dynamical gates.

The presence of decoherence in quantum computers necessitates the suppression of noise. Dynamically corrected gates via specially designed control pulses offer a path forward, but hardware-specific experimental constraints can cause complications. Existing methods to obtain smooth pulses are either restricted to two-level systems, require an optimization over noise realizations, or limited to piecewise-continuous pulse sequences. In this paper, we present the first general method for obtaining truly smooth pulses that minimizes sensitivity to noise, eliminating the need for sampling over noise realizations and making assumptions regarding the underlying statistics of the experimental noise. We parametrize the Hamiltonian using a neural network, which allows the use of a large number of optimization parameters to adequately explore the functional control space. We demonstrate the capability of our approach by finding smooth shapes, which suppress the effects of noise within the logical subspace as well as leakage out of that subspace.

Post-transfusion graft-versus-host disease (PT-GVHD) is seldom, but it has a high mortality rate, exceeding 90 percent. There is no standard treatment for PT-GVHD and irradiation of blood and its components before transfusion is broadly accepted for the prevention of PT-GVHD. Nanoparticles, thanks to their superior properties such as large surface area and high reactivity, can be an alternative to traditional fertilizers for improving nutrient uptake. Furthermore, considering that chemical and physical synthesis methods require high energy consumption and cause environmental pollution, plant-mediated green synthesis of NPs has attracted great attention since it provides eco-friendly, biocompatible, and inexpensive solutions. In this present study, plant mediated green synthesis of Iron Oxide (Fe 2 O 3 ), Zinc Oxide (ZnO) and Titanium Dioxide (TiO 2 ) nanoparticles by using Laurus nobilis leaves (bay leaves) were carried out and their structural properties were characterized by UV visible spectra, Dynamic Light Scattering (DLS), Fourier Transform Infrared (FTIR), X-Ray Diffraction (XRD) and Transmission Electron Microscopy (TEM). UV spectrum and FTIR analysis exhibited characteristic peaks indicating the presence of the desired NPs, while DLS analysis and TEM images confirmed that synthesized particles are in nano-scale. The potential of nanoparticles as biofertilizer in agricultural uses were assessed by investigating their effects on sunflower growth in hydroponic system. TEM images of the NP applied plant tissues proved the uptake and translocation of NPs from root to leaf. Background: This study aimed to evaluate the demographic," clinicopathologic, and prognostic characteristics of malignant peritoneal mesothelioma (MPeM), as well as the treatment options for the rare and heterogeneous MPeM population., Methods: A retrospective multi-center observational cohort study was conducted to evaluate patients with MPeM. Due to the heterogeneity of the study population, the study divided them into two main groups in terms of treatments, follow-up periods, and prognostic features. The first group comprised the patients who underwent cytoreductive surgery (CRS) and hyperthermic intraperitoneal chemotherapy (HIPEC), and the second group included the patients with metastatic disease for whom curative intent surgery was not possible. The patients' diagnostic procedures and treatments were identified from medical records. Patients older than 18 years old were included in the study regardless of asbestos exposure. Well-differentiated papillary and multicystic mesothelioma histologic types were not included in the study., Results: The study evaluated 118 patients from five centers. Survival times, prognosis, and treatment responses were analyzed in both groups. The study showed that CRS-HIPEC was associated with longer overall survival (OS) and progression-free survival (PFS). Perioperative therapy was evaluated in subgroup analyses of this population and shown to provide survival benefits. The patients treated with chemotherapy (metastatic and medically inoperable patients and those for whom complete cytoreduction was not achievable) had a poorer prognosis than the surgery group. The study showed that life expectancy decreased significantly for the patients not suitable to undergo surgery for any reason., Conclusions: According to data from experienced centers, CRS-HIPEC is a treatment option recognized as effective, cost-effective, and safe, with better OS and PFS , as well as low morbidity and mortality rates similar to those in the literature. Purpose of Review: This review addresses the current landscape of colorectal cancer (CRC) with a focus on liver metastases, the third most common cancer globally. It explores recent findings in treatment strategies, emphasizing the dynamic interplay between surgery, systemic chemotherapy, and local therapies for synchronous colorectal liver metastases (CRLMs)., Recent Findings: Highlighting the role of advanced imaging, the review underscores the significance of contrast-enhanced MRI in surgical planning for CRLMs. Surgical resection remains a primary choice for resectable cases, with considerations for oncologic scoring systems and tumor biology. Perioperative systemic chemotherapy plays a pivotal role, especially in conversion therapy for initially unresectable CRLMs. The review also explores various local therapies, including radiofrequency ablation, microwave ablation, stereotactic body radiotherapy, hepatic arterial infusional chemotherapy, selective internal radiation therapy, and transarterial chemoembolization for unresectable cases. A comprehensive approach, integrating surgery, systemic chemotherapy, and local therapies, is crucial for managing synchronous CRLMs. Surgical resection and perioperative chemotherapy are key players, guided by considerations of tumor biology and scoring systems. For unresectable cases, local therapies offer viable alternatives, emphasizing the need for tailored treatments. Multidisciplinary collaboration among medical oncologists, surgeons, and radiologists is essential. Introduction Microsatellite instable (deficient mismatch repair, dMMR) colon cancer is associated with hypermutability and immune infiltration-activation. COVID-19 vaccines stimulate immune-inflammation response. This study aimed to investigate the types and rates of COVID-19 vaccines in patients with newly diagnosed colon cancer and compare it according to the microsatellite status. Methods The study was a single-center case-control study. Patients diagnosed with colon cancer at least three months after the last COVID-19 vaccine (BNT162b2, CoronaVac) dose were included. Patients with dMMR and microsatellite stable (MSS) tumors were defined as cases and controls, respectively, between June 2021 and June 2023. Baseline characteristics and vaccine status between case-control groups were compared as univariable and multivariable. Inflammation markers were compared between MSS+CoronaVac and dMMR+BNT162b2 groups. Results A total of 76 patients were included. The BMI was higher in the MSS group (BMI>25 84.3% vs. 57.9%, p=0.00), and right-sided tumors were more common in the dMMR group (71% vs.46.4%, p=0.00). The dMMR group had a higher BNT162b2 vaccine history than the MSS group (86.8% vs. 63.2%, p=0.01), while there was no difference in CoronaVac history (p=0.32). Significant variables in univariable analysis (BMI, localization, and BNT162b2) were included in multivariable logistic regression. The BNT162b2 vaccine was significantly associated with dMMR status (OR: 6.39, 95% CI: 1.55-26.26, p=0.01). The dMMR+BNT162b2 group had higher median C-reactive protein (CRP) level (p=0.01), erythrocyte sedimentation rate (p=0.05), and lower lymphocyte/CRP ratio (p=0.04) than the MSS+CoronaVac group. Conclusion Immune infiltration in dMMR colon cancer may interact with COVID-19 vaccine-induced immune activation. Herein, GO (graphene oxide) or rGO (reduced graphene oxide) which is produced by the green synthesis method using plant extract (Laurus nobilis) was incorporated into a polymeric structure consisting of carboxymethyl cellulose (CMC) and polyethylene glycol (PEG) to produce a wound dressing material with enhanced mechanical and electrical properties. The effect of GO and rGO on the wound dressing features of the produced materials was investigated and compared to each other. Conductivity tests demonstrated that rGO contributed more significantly to the electrical conductivity than GO. While rGO-CMC/PEG/CA reached 3.01 × 10 -6 S.cm -1 as the conductivity value, that of GO-CMC/PEG/CA was determined as 0.85 × 10 -6 S.cm -1 . As for the mechanical tests, it was seen that rGO achieved the best results in terms of elastic modulus (588.62 N/mm 2 ), tensile strength (94.95 MPa) and elongation at break (17.64 %) compared to GO reinforced and pure hydrogel. Curcumin and ascorbic acid were used for antibiotic-free wound treatment and their release kinetics were also modeled. The results showed that rGO reinforced hydrogel provided a more controlled release. Introduction: Adrenocortical carcinoma (ACC) is a rare yet highly malignant tumor associated with significant morbidity and mortality. This study aims to delineate the clinical features, survival patterns, and treatment modalities of ACC, providing insights into the disease's prognosis., Materials and Methods: A retrospective analysis of 157 ACC patients was performed to assess treatment methodologies, demographic patterns, pathological and clinical attributes, and laboratory results. The data were extracted from the hospital's database. Survival analyses were conducted using the Kaplan-Meier method, with univariate and multivariate analyses being performed through the log-rank test and Cox regression analyses., Results: The median age was 45, and 89.4% had symptoms at the time of diagnosis. The median tumor size was 12 cm. A total of 117 (79.6%) patients underwent surgery. A positive surgical border was detected in 26 (24.1%) patients. Adjuvant therapy was administered to 44.4% of patients. The median overall survival for the entire cohort was 44.3 months. Median OS was found to be 87.3 months (95% confidence interval [CI] 74.4-100.2) in stage 2, 25.8 (95% CI 6.5-45.1) months in stage 3, and 13.3 (95% CI 7.0-19.6) months in stage 4 disease. Cox regression analysis identified age, Ki67 value, Eastern Cooperative Oncology Group performance status, and hormonal activity as significant factors associated with survival in patients with nonmetastatic disease. In metastatic disease, only patients who underwent surgery exhibited significantly improved overall survival in univariate analyses., Conclusion: ACC is an uncommon tumor with a generally poor prognosis. Understanding the defining prognostic factors in both localized and metastatic diseases is vital. Introduction: Adjuvant chemoradiotherapy (CRT) is the optimal management strategy in resectable gastric cancer. There is a debate about the efficacy of more aggressive CRT plus chemotherapy regimens in adjuvant setting. This study aimed to compare the efficacy of adjuvant CRT plus docetaxel-cisplatin-fluorouracil (DCF) versus CRT plus fluorouracil-folinic acid (FUFA) in stage III gastric cancer., Methods: Patients with a diagnosis of stage III gastric cancer treated with adjuvant therapy after curative resection were analyzed. Patients' disease characteristics and impacts of the regimens on median disease-free survival (DFS) and median overall survival (OS) were analyzed retrospectively., Results: One hundred sixty-one patients (102 in FUFA arm and 59 in DCF arm) with a median age of 56.0 (29-79) were evaluated. In the DCF arm, there were more renal toxicities (31.6% vs 6.4% P < 0.001), emergency department admissions (64.9% vs 23.7%, P < 0.001), and dose reductions/treatment modifications in the DCF arm (51.6% vs 37.2, P < 0.001). The median follow-up was 23 months (1-124) in the FUFA arm and 26.0 months (1-77) in the DCF arm. The median DFS was 25.0 months (%95 CI, 12.7-37.2) in the DCF arm and 17.0 months (%95 CI, 2.6-31.3) in the FUFA arm, P = 0.66. Purpose: Colorectal cancer (CRC) is the second most common cancer in both women and men. Microsatellite instability-high (MSI-H) CRC is a molecular subgroup and has distinct clinical and pathologic features from microsatellite stable (MSS) CRC. Studies have suggested an association between hereditary antigens in ABO blood group system and the risk of developing various cancers but the relationship between blood groups and MSI-H CRC has not been investigated. This study aimed to investigate this relationship and its possible effect on clinicopathological features in patients with CRC., Methods: This is a retrospective cross-sectional single-center study including pathology-confirmed CRC patients. Demographic and clinicopathological features, blood groups, and microsatellite status were examined among two groups. Microsatellite instability was examined by immunohistochemistry (IHC) in pathology specimen., Results: A total of 144 patients, 72 patients with MSI-H CRC and 72 patients with MSS CRC, were included in the study. Among all patients, median age was 61.7 ± 12.9 (range 27-89) and 57.6% were male. MSI-H and MSS groups were similar in terms of age, gender distribution, and comorbidities. Patients with MSI-H CRC had significantly common O-blood group than control group (44.4% vs 18.1%, p: 0.001). In multivariate analysis, O-blood group was 4.2 times more common in the MSI-H patient group (95% CI: 1.514-11.819, p: 0.006). Also patients with MSI-H CRC were found to have significantly more right-sided, high-grade tumors and early-stage disease., Conclusions: MSI-H CRC is an important subgroup in colon cancer with different molecular and clinicopathological features. It was observed that O-blood group was 4.2 times more common in MSI-H CRC. We believe that clarifying the relationship between microsatellite instability and O-blood group and its possible genetic and epigenetic mechanisms in larger studies will enable us to better understand tumor behavior and prognosis, also affect our treatment choices of these patient groups., (© 2023. Histamine and H1 receptors play a crucial role in the tumor microenvironment. Preclinical data showed that concomitant use of antihistamines and immune checkpoint inhibitors (ICIs) might increase the effect of ICIs. This study aimed to evaluate the impact of antihistamines on the oncological outcomes of ICIs. This retrospective study was conducted in a tertiary cancer center. Advanced cancer patients treated with ICIs were included in this study. A total of 133 patients receiving ICIs in the metastatic setting were included. Melanoma (33.1%) was the most common tumor type. The most common ICI was nivolumab (63.2%). Fifty-five (38.4%) patients received antihistamines concomitantly with ICIs. The most common antihistamine was pheniramine (85.5%). The median progression-free survival (PFS) (8.2 vs. 5.1 months, P  = 0.016) and overall survival (OS) (16.2 vs. 7.7 months, P  = 0.002) were longer in patients receiving antihistamines concomitantly with ICIs. In multivariate analysis, PFS [hazard ratio (HR) = 0.63, 95% CI: 0.40-0.98, P  = 0.042] and OS (HR = 0.49, 95% CI: 0.29-0.81, P  = 0.006) were also better in those patients after adjusting for confounding factors, such as performance status, bone or liver metastasis, and concurrent chemotherapy. This study suggested that antihistamines may enhance the efficacy of ICIs in patients with advanced cancer. Background: Low serum sodium affects cancer prognosis, but its impact on immunotherapy is unclear. Objective: Assessing the association of pre- and post-ICI treatment sodium levels with survival. Methods: We retrospectively analyzed patients receiving ICI in January 2012-December 2023, collecting serum sodium levels at treatment initiation and 4 weeks post-ICI, with overall survival (OS) as the primary outcome. Results: Low sodium was observed in 125 and 119 patients pre-and post-treatment respectively. Pre-ICI and post-ICI low sodium correlated with decreased OS [10.6 vs. 22.9 months ( p = 0.001) and 11.6 vs. 27.2 months ( p = 0.009)]. Multivariate analysis identified pre-ICI low sodium [HR: 1.685; 95% CI: 1.050-2.705; p = 0.031] as an independent risk factor for worse OS. Conclusion: Low baseline serum sodium was an independent risk factor for poor OS in patients treated with ICIs.

Aim: This study aimed to investigate the association between microsatellite instability (MSI) status and inflammatory indicators in patients with cancer. Patients & methods: A total of 204 patients with various cancer diagnoses, including 102 with MSI-high (MSI-H) and 102 with microsatellite stable tumors, were enrolled. Neutrophil-to-lymphocyte ratio (NLR), platelet-to-lymphocyte ratio (PLR), lymphocyte-to-monocyte ratio (LMR), C-reactive protein (CRP)-to-albumin ratio and systemic immune-inflammation index were evaluated. Results: In microsatellite stable patients, NLR, LMR, PLR and systemic immune-inflammation index were significantly linked to worse survival in univariate analysis, and having a LMR ≤2.6 negatively affected survival in multivariate analysis, although these indicators did not affect the survival of MSI-H patients. Conclusion: The impact of chronic inflammation on survival varies with MSI status. Further research is needed for targeted therapies in different tumors.

Introduction: Angiotensin 2 has been shown to promote angiogenesis through multiple pathways. Reduction of angiotensin 2 production by angiotensin-converting enzyme inhibitors (ACEi) could enhance the antiangiogenic effect of bevacizumab and lead to improved survival., Methods: Data from metastatic colorectal cancer (mCRC) patients treated with bevacizumab in our hospital were retrospectively collected. Patients were divided into groups taking ACEi or angiotensin receptor blockers (ARB) or neither. We performed survival analysis and COX proportional hazard modelling and calculated the hazard ratio (HR). Multivariate analyses were performed to measure the impact of factors affecting survival, and subgroup analyses were performed for patients younger than 65 years., Results: We enrolled 133 patients who received bevacizumab therapy. Eighty patients were male, and 53 were female. Twenty-three patients received ACEi treatment, and 34 patients received ARB. The median age was 58 years. Progression-free survival was higher in the ACEi group than in the ARB group or in the group receiving neither (7.66 vs. 5.98 vs. 5.0 months; p < 0.01), corresponding to a HR of 0.44 for the ACEi group (95% CI 0.26-0.74). Overall survival was not significantly longer in the ACEi group than in the ARB group or in the group receiving neither (22.0 vs. 23.5 vs. 19.7 months; p = 0.30), HR 0.66 (95% CI 0.38-1.2). In a subgroup analysis, overall survival was higher in patients younger than 65 years in the ACEi group (45.0 vs. 16.2 months; p = 0.02)., Conclusion: In the final analysis, ACEi use in patients treated with bevacizumab resulted in prolonged progression-free survival, but this did not affect overall survival. Because our study is the first to look at the enhancement of the effect of bevacizumab by ACEi treatment and ACEi receiving patients are older, it would be useful to confirm our results by randomized trials., (© 2022. Despite the huge and efficient functionalities of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) for bioengineering applications, the use of harsh chemicals and unfavorable techniques in their production remains a major challenge. Microbial production of reduced graphene oxide (RGO) using specific bacterial strains has gained interest as a sustainable and efficient method. The reduction of GO to RGO by selected bacterial strains was achieved through their enzymatic activities and resulted in the removal of oxygen functional groups from GO, leading to the formation of RGO with enhanced structural integrity. The use of microorganisms offers a sustainable approach, utilizing renewable carbon sources and mild reaction conditions. This study investigates the production of RGO using three different bacterial strains: Lactococcus lactis ( L. Lactis ), Lactobacillus plantarum ( L. plantarum ), and Escherichia coli ( E. coli ) and evaluates its toxicity for safe utilization. The aim is to assess the quality of the produced RGO and evaluate its toxicity for potential applications. Thus, this study focused on the microbial production of reduced graphene oxides well as the investigation of their cellular interactions. Graphite-derived graphene oxide was used as a starting material and microbially reduced GO products were characterized using the FTIR, Raman, XRD, TGA, and XPS methods to determine their physical and chemical properties. FTIR shows that the epoxy and some of the alkoxy and carboxyl functional groups were reduced by E. coli and L. lactis , whereas the alkoxy groups were mostly reduced by L. plantarum . The I D / I G ratio from Raman spectra was found as 2.41 for GO. A substantial decrease in the ratio as well as defects was observed as 1.26, 1.35, and 1.46 for ERGO, LLRGO, and LPRGO after microbial reduction. The XRD analysis also showed a significant reduction in the interlayer spacing of the GO from 0.89 to 0.34 nm for all the reduced graphene oxides. TGA results showed that reduction of GO with L. lactis provided more reduction than other bacteria and formed a structure closer to graphene. Similarly, analysis with XPS showed that L lactis provides the most effective reduction with a C/O ratio of 3.70. In the XPS results obtained with all bacteria, it was observed that the C/O ratio increased because of the microbial reduction. Toxicity evaluations were performed to assess the biocompatibility and safety of the produced RGO. Cell viability assays were conducted using DLD-1 and CHO cell lines to determine the potential cytotoxic effects of RGO produced by each bacterial strain. Additionally, apoptotic, and necrotic responses were examined to understand the cellular mechanisms affected by RGO exposure. The results indicated that all the RGOs have concentration-dependent cytotoxicity. A significant amount of cell viability of DLD-1 cells was observed for L. lactis reduced graphene oxide. However, the highest cell viability of CHO cells was observed for L. plantarum reduced graphene oxide. All reduced graphene oxides have low apoptotic and necrotic responses in both cell lines. These findings highlight the importance of considering the specific bacterial strain used in RGO production as it can influence the toxicity and cellular response of the resulting RGO. The toxicity and cellular response to the final RGO can be affected by the particular bacterial strain that is employed to produce it. Background: Consolidation chemotherapy strategies have demonstrated improved pathological complete response and tumor downstaging rates for patients diagnosed with rectal cancer., Objective: This study aimed to compare perioperative outcomes and pathological complete response rates among different neoadjuvant treatment strategies in patients undergoing total mesorectal excision for locally advanced rectal cancer., Design: Propensity score case-matched study., Setting: High-volume tertiary care centers., Patients: Consecutive patients undergoing curative total mesorectal excision between January 2014 and June 2021 were queried., Interventions: Patients were divided into 3 groups: long-course chemoradiation therapy with (N = 128) or without (N = 164) consolidation chemotherapy or short-course radiotherapy (N = 53) followed by consolidation chemotherapy., Main Outcome Measures: Demographics, preoperative tumor characteristics, histopathologic outcomes, and postoperative complication rates were reviewed and compared. Propensity score match analysis was conducted., Results: A total of 345 patients (mean age: 58 ± 12 years; female: 36%) met the study inclusion criteria. Time interval from neoadjuvant treatment until surgery was longer for patients receiving consolidation chemotherapy ( p < 0.001). Pathological complete response rates were comparable among patients receiving long-course chemoradiation therapy (20.3%) and short-course radiotherapy with consolidation chemotherapy (20.8%) compared to long-course chemoradiation therapy alone (14.6%) ( p = 0.36). After the propensity score case-matched analysis, 48 patients in the long-course chemoradiation therapy with consolidation chemotherapy group were matched to 48 patients in the short-course radiotherapy with consolidation chemotherapy group. Groups were comparable with respect to age, sex, clinical stage, tumor location, type of surgical approach, and technique. Pathological complete response rate was comparable between the groups (20.8% and 18.8%, p = 0.99)., Limitations: Study was limited by its retrospective nature., Conclusions: Among recent neoadjuvant treatment modalities, pathological complete response rates, and short-term clinical outcomes were comparable. Short-course radiotherapy with consolidation chemotherapy is safe and effective as long-course chemoradiation therapy as in a short-term period. Se revisaron y compararon los datos demográficos, las características preoperatorias del tumor, los resultados histopatológicos y las tasas de complicaciones posoperatorias entre los grupos de estudio. Se realizó un análisis de casos emparejados por puntaje de propensión.RESULTADOS: Un total de 345 pacientes (edad media de 58 ± 12 años y mujeres: 36%) cumplieron los criterios de inclusión del estudio. El intervalo de tiempo desde el tratamiento neoadyuvante hasta la cirugía fue mayor para los pacientes que recibieron quimioterapia de consolidación ( p < 0,001). Las tasas de respuesta patológica completa fueron comparables entre los pacientes que recibieron quimiorradioterapia de larga duración con quimioterapia de consolidación (20,3 %) y radioterapia de corta duración con quimioterapia de consolidación (20,8%) en comparación con la quimiorradiación de larga duración sola (14,6%) ( p = 0,36). Después del análisis de casos emparejados por puntaje de propensión, 48 pacientes en el grupo de quimiorradioterapia de ciclo largo con quimioterapia de consolidación se emparejaron con 48 pacientes en el grupo de radioterapia de ciclo corto con quimioterapia de consolidación.
