Los Presidentes del Grupo Andino decidieron intercambiar mensajes e investigaciones utilizadas en las estrategias de comunicación contra el cólera y promover campañas contra esta enfermedad de la pobreza.Se enfatiza en la necesidad de una planificación y evaluación de las actividades de comunicación, ésta no puede ser un fin en sí misma debe formar parte integral de un plan mayor y de un fin social identificado claramente. En conclusión los programas para combatir el cólera y la diarrea requieren de una estrategia agresiva de comunicación juntamente con campañas de comunicación para que los gobiernos atiendan de manera emergente con el suministro de agua potable,saneamiento ambiental y la comunidad cree hábitos de higiene personal.

Los ejecutivos de radio y televisión, como resultado de la reunión sobre 'Medios de Comunicación y la Infancia" celebrada en la ciudad de Río de Janeiro en los días 9 y 10 de noviembre de 1992, DECIDEN participar de un esfuerzo general para sensibilizar a la opinión pública sobre los problemas y necesidades de la infancia, en cada país de la región. Este esfuerzo requiere el compromiso de informar al público la realidad de la infancia, asumiendo la disposición de trabajar por el desarrollo integral de los niños en sus aspectos psicofísicos, intelectuales y afectivos, en consonancia con los compromisos internacionales asumidos por nuestros Gobiernos.

Over the last two decades, there has been remarkable progress towards eliminating iodine deficiency (ID). While there has been remarkable success, there have been several notable changes in the way that salt iodization programs have been designed and monitored, as well as the general landscape in which salt iodization is being implemented. This article is based on the Guidance on the monitoring of salt iodization programmes and determination of population iodine status. It summarizes important lessons learned on how to better track the performance of and refine salt iodization programs. The adequacy of iodine intakes should be examined among different subsets of the population (not only school-aged children), especially among groups vulnerable to deficiency (such as pregnant women). The acceptable range of adequate iodine intake among school-age children can be widened from 100199 g/L to 100299 g/L eliminating the range of 200299 g/L that previously indicates more than adequate iodine intake. The interpretation of mUIC of 300 g/L as excessive iodine intake remains unchanged. With currently available methods, the mUIC can only be used to define population iodine status and not to quantify the proportion of the population with iodine deficiency or iodine excess. National salt iodization programmes should monitor the use of iodized salt in processed foods. If the salt contained in such foods is well iodized, it can be an important source of iodine and may help explain iodine sufficiency in settings where household iodized salt coverage is low.

The article describes the process and the findings of a Participatory Action Research (PAR) conducted with young people in Bosnia and Herzegovina (BiH) in 2003, with an aim to develop a communication strategy for the prevention of HIV/AIDS in BiH. The study was initiated and funded as part of a global UNICEF initiative bearing the same name and aims. The process included the development of three youth research teams in three towns in BiH--Sarajevo, Tuzla and Banja Luka, that worked with their peers in their communities with a support from a Head Researcher with PAR experience. The young people developed a prevention strategy that includes peer education in elementary and high schools and co-operation with the media. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Background: Tanzania faces ever-rising concerns due to the recurrence of the Ebola Virus Disease (EVD) in neighbouring Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC) and Uganda. This necessitates a better understanding of the community perspectives in high-risk regions for effective risk communication and preparedness., Methods: This rapid ethnographic assessment study used explorative qualitative methods to collect data. People from diverse backgrounds participated in 59 in-depth interviews, 57 Key Informant interviews, and 35 focus group discussions. Data was analysed using a thematic analysis approach., Finding: The study revealed existence of awareness of EVD and its symptoms, with radio and television being the main sources of information. However, there were varied perceptions of EVD's cause and transmission, some attributed it to bats, monkeys, and wild animal meat, while others associated it with high fever, a dirty environment, changing dietary patterns, and the COVID-19 virus. Physical contact with an infected person's body fluids and eating meat from infected animals were perceived as EVD transmission routes. Women, school children, boda-boda (motorcycle) riders, and fishermen were considered the most susceptible to EVD infections due to their daily activities. Preventive measures included avoiding physical contact, touching fluids, and refraining from eating wild animal meat. Prompt reporting of suspected cases to health facilities was deemed crucial for earlier outbreak identification and containment., Conclusion: The high-risk regions of Tanzania had a high level of awareness and perceived susceptibility to EVD, coupled with varying degrees of misperception about the etiology and its transmission. In the context of polio eradication efforts, accurate assessment of vaccination programme effectiveness is essential to public health planning and decision making. Such assessments are often based on zero-dose children, estimated using the number of children who did not receive the first dose of the Diphtheria-Tetanus-Pertussis containing vaccine as a proxy. Our study introduces a novel approach to directly estimate the number of children susceptible to poliovirus type 2 (PV2) and uses this approach to provide district-level estimates for South Africa of susceptible children born between 2017 and 2022. We used district-level data on annual doses of inactivated poliovirus vaccine (IPV) administered, live births, and population sizes, from 2017 through 2022. We imputed missing vaccination data, implemented flexible assumptions regarding dose distribution in the eligible population, and used estimated efficacy values for one, two, three, and four doses of IPV, to compute the number of susceptible and immune children by birth year. We validated our approach by comparing an intermediary output with zero-dose children (ZDC) estimated using data reported by WHO/UNICEF Estimates of National Immunization Coverage (WUENIC). Our results indicate high heterogeneity in susceptibility to PV2 across South Africa's 52 districts as of the end of 2022. In children under 5 years, PV2 susceptibility ranged from approximately 30 % in districts including Xhariep (31.9 %), Ekurhuleni (30.1 %), and Central Karoo (29.8 %), to less than 4 % in Sarah Baartman (1.9 %), Buffalo City (2.1 %), and eThekwini (3.2 %). Our susceptibility estimates were consistently higher than ZDC over the timeframe. We estimated that ZDC decreased nationally from 155,168 (152,737-158,523) in 2017 to 108,593 in 2021, and increased to 127,102 in 2022, a trend consistent with ZDC derived from data reported by WUENIC. Routine childhood immunization is one of the most effective methods of preventing infectious diseases in children. In Argentina, there has been a decline in routine immunization coverage since 2015, with very little evidence to date on underlying drivers of this steady decline. We administered an online nationwide behavioral insights survey in Argentina between July 1-25, 2022, targeting parents with at least one child under the age of 12 years. Our survey included 1504 parents, 7% (n = 111) of whom did not or only partially vaccinated their children. We found that, compared to the youngest parents (aged 18-24), older parents were less likely to under-vaccinate their children (e.g., 30-34 year-old parents: adjusted Odds Ratio (aOR): 0.31, 95% Confidence Interval (CI) 0.16-0.57). Parents who undervaccinated their children were more likely to take vaccination advice from parent and wellness social media influencers (parent influencers: aOR 2.51, 95% CI 1.46-4.31), and were less likely to trust the social media accounts of official health organizations (aOR 0.82, 95% CI 0.70-0.96). Furthermore, these parents had heightened concerns about routine immunizations, including the number of vaccines given to children and potential for adverse side effects. When asked whether they knew enough to make a vaccine decision for their children, parents who undervaccinated their children were more likely to report that they did not know enough about vaccines or the vaccination schedule to make a decision. Relatively few studies have longitudinally investigated how COVID-19 has disrupted the lives and health of youth beyond the first year of the pandemic. This may be because longitudinal researchers face complex challenges in figuring out how to code time, account for changes in COVID-19 spread, and model longitudinal COVID-19-related trajectories across environmental contexts. This manuscript considers each of these three methodological issues by modeling trajectories of COVID-19 disruption in 1080 youth from 12 cultural groups in nine nations between March 2020-July 2022 using multilevel modeling. Our findings suggest that for studies that attempt to examine cross-cultural longitudinal trajectories during COVID-19, starting such trajectories on March 11, 2020, measuring disruption along 6-month time intervals, capturing COVID-19 spread using death rates and the COVID-19 Health and Containment Index scores, and using modeling methods that combine etic and emic approaches are each especially useful. In offering these suggestions, we hope to start methodological dialogues among longitudinal researchers that ultimately result in the proliferation of research on the longitudinal impacts of COVID-19 that the world so badly needs., (© 2024. In December 2020, Argentina approved a new abortion law following decades of feminist and social advocacy. This paper presents qualitative findings from interviews and focus group discussions with people in local communities focusing on how individuals of reproductive age access and communicate sexual and reproductive health information, particularly regarding abortion. Sixteen in-depth interviews were conducted with key informants working in the field of SRHR and four focus group discussions took place with cisgender women and girls, transmasculine people and non-binary people of reproductive age. We found that information exchange and communication about sexual and reproductive health issues, particularly abortion, took place mainly through informal social networks engaging with activists and feminist grass-root organisations. These informal social networks were built on trust as a collective affect that enabled open communication about abortion. Information sharing through word of mouth, in person and via digital means using different social media platforms, is an important means of information sharing and communication in Argentina. Monitoring the implementation of abortion policies in this country should include investigating the impact of people accessing abortion through informal social networks in terms of abortion pathways and intersections with the formal health system.

The World Health Organization has been involved in male contraceptive development for over 50 years. In line with its functions and mandate, World Health Organization works with diverse stakeholders to support research, develop norms and standards, engage member states, facilitate prequalification, introduction and scale up, measurement, and tracking of contraceptives. World Health Organization has a key role in galvanizing global efforts to ensure universal access to contraception services irrespective of income group. Regarding male contraceptive development, World Health Organization has provided technical leadership, supported early research, created and supported research centers, built research capacity in various countries, and standardized semen analysis procedures. Background: Evidence-based decision-making is essential to improve public health benefits and resources, especially in low- and middle-income countries (LMICs), but the mechanisms of its implementation remain less straightforward. The availability of high-quality, reliable, and sufficient data in LMICs can be challenging due to issues such as a lack of human resource capacity and weak digital infrastructure, among others. Health information systems (HISs) have been critical for aggregating and integrating health-related data from different sources to support evidence-based decision-making. Nutrition information systems (NISs), which are nutrition-focused HISs, collect and report on nutrition-related indicators to improve issues related to malnutrition and food security-and can assist in improving populations' nutritional statuses and the integration of nutrition programming into routine health services. Data visualization tools (DVTs) such as dashboards have been recommended to support evidence-based decision-making, leveraging data from HISs or NISs. The use of such DVTs to support decision-making has largely been unexplored within LMIC contexts. In Bangladesh, the Mukto dashboard was developed to display and visualize nutrition-related performance indicators at the national and subnational levels. However, despite this effort, the current use of nutrition data to guide priorities and decisions remains relatively nascent and underused., Objective: The goal of this study is to better understand how Bangladesh's NIS, including the Mukto dashboard, has been used and areas for improvement to facilitate its use for evidence-based decision-making toward ameliorating nutrition-related service delivery and the health status of communities in Bangladesh., Methods: Primary data collection was conducted through qualitative semistructured interviews with key policy-level stakeholders (n=24). Key informants were identified through purposive sampling and were asked questions about the experiences and challenges with the NIS and related nutrition dashboards., Results: Main themes such as trust, data usability, personal power, and data use for decision-making emerged from the data. Trust in both data collection and quality was lacking among many stakeholders. Poor data usability stemmed from unstandardized indicators, irregular data collection, and differences between rural and urban data. Insufficient personal power and staff training coupled with infrastructural challenges can negatively affect data at the input stage. While stakeholders understood and expressed the importance of evidence-based decision-making, ultimately, they noted that the data were not being used to their maximum potential., Conclusions: Leveraging DVTs can improve the use of data for evidence-based decision-making, but decision makers must trust that the data are believable, credible, timely, and responsive. The results support the significance of a tailored data ecosystem, which has not reached its full potential in Bangladesh. Recommendations to reach this potential include ensuring a clear intended user base and accountable stakeholders are present. Families suffer in particular ways during the violence and targeted deprivation of freedom and resources within political violence (PV), which includes wars, armed conflicts, and military occupations-all part of political violence (PV). While evidence is accumulating about the disproportionate impacts of PV on parents and children, we lack a clear, globally integrated understanding of how families suffer-and survive-PV. There is an urgent need to synthesize existing work to refine our understanding of parental experiences within PV-with particular attention to both how PV creates suffering for parents, and how parents strategize, caring for their families within the most horrendous of circumstances. In this systematic scoping review, authors explore how political violence impacts parenting. Using predetermined search strategies and inclusion criteria (peer-reviewed, empirical articles, published in English), searches within multiple databases, and tests of interrater reliability, 112 articles (quantitative, qualitative, and mixed method) were identified. Authors organized and coded findings, determined common themes, and built a conceptual model connecting and integrating findings. Findings point to two crucial areas of parenting within PV: parenting efficacy and parenting practices, demonstrating how these are simultaneously compromised by and amplified within PV. Results uncover how much parenting within PV is intertwined with parental psychological and social well-being, and that parents cope with a variety of internal and external resources, including culture, community, religion, activism, flight, and emotional and logistical reconfiguration. The Robson Classification System is recognised as a first step for optimising the use of caesarean section and as a strategy for continuous quality improvement in maternal and newborn health. This Viewpoint provides a detailed account of the strategy adopted and lessons learned from a collaborative initiative to institutionalise the Robson Classification into Pakistan's health system. We developed a training package which emphasised capacity building of senior clinicians to act as master trainers. We also developed a mobile application for data collection and analysis. Training workshops took place in 2020 in a selection of public sector, tertiary-level, teaching hospitals from across the country and data was collected on all births in participating hospitals' obstetric units for a full year. Pakistan is poised for scale-up with the Robson Classification embedded in 57% of Pakistan's public, tertiary, teaching hospitals. A core group of master trainers is positioned in every province, and a robust dataset is available. However, integration into any health system cannot be thought of as a finite project. Background: Sub-Saharan Africa has been a technological hothouse when it comes to mobile phone technology adoption. However, evidence on the role played by mobile technology on infectious disease prevention has been mostly limited to experimental studies., Objective: This observational study investigates the role of mobile phone connectivity on HIV testing in sub-Saharan Africa., Methods: We make use of the novel and comprehensive OpenCelliD cell tower database and Demographic and Health Survey geocoded information for over 400,000 women in 29 sub-Saharan African countries. We examine, through ordinary least square and instrumental variable regressions, whether women's community distance from the closest cell tower influences knowledge about HIV testing facilities and the likelihood of ever being tested for HIV., Results: After finding a negative and significant impact of distance to the nearest cell tower on knowledge of HIV testing facility (-0.7 percentage points per unit increase in distance) and HIV testing (-0.5 percentage points per unit increase), we investigate the mechanisms through which such effects might occur. Our analysis shows that distance to a cell tower reduces HIV-related knowledge (-0.4 percentage points per unit increase) as well as reproductive health knowledge (-0.4 percentage points per unit increase). Similar results are observed when the analysis is performed at community level., Conclusions: Results suggest that the effect of mobile phone connectivity is channeled through increased knowledge of HIV, sexually transmittable infections, and modern contraceptive methods. Further analysis shows that cell phone ownership has an even larger impact on HIV testing and knowledge. Introduction: Anemia is one of the most serious health problems impacting people worldwide. The disease is quiet, moving slowly and producing only a few physical symptoms. Anemia during pregnancy raises the risk of premature birth, low birth weight, and fetal anomalies, and it can have a substantial financial impact on society and families. However, there was a paucity of studies on the magnitude and associated factors of anemia among pregnant women in southern Ethiopia., Objective: This study aimed to assess the magnitude and associated factors of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in the Hawella Tula Sub-city of Hawassa City in 2021., Methods: Institution-based cross-sectional study was done on 341 randomly selected pregnant women attending antenatal care clinics. Data were obtained using a standardized semi-structured questionnaire. To identify the associated factors for the magnitude of anemia logistic regression model was used with an adjusted odds ratio (AOR) with 95% confidence intervals (CI) was calculated., Results: The prevalence of anemia among pregnant women attending antenatal care in health facilities of Hawella Tula Sub-city was 113 (33.7%) with a 95% confidence interval (CI) (28.8, 38.9). Male-headed household (AOR = 2.217, 95% CI: 1.146, 4.286), rural resident (AOR = 3.805, 95% CI: 2.118, 6.838), early marriage below 18 years (AOR = 2.137, 95% CI: 1.193, 3.830), and recurrent of illness during pregnancy (AOR = 3.189, 95% CI: 1.405, 7.241) were associated factors for anemia., Conclusion: Anemia prevalence among pregnant women was 113 (33.7%). Background: Pneumococcal conjugate vaccines are an expensive component of the routine immunization schedule. Fractional-dose regimens may be one option to increase the sustainability of the vaccine program., Methods: We assessed whether the immunogenicity of fractional doses of the 10-valent and 13-valent pneumococcal conjugate vaccines (PCV10 [GSK] and PCV13 [Pfizer], respectively) would be noninferior to that of the full doses and analyzed the prevalence of vaccine-serotype carriage. We randomly assigned healthy infants in Kenya to one of seven equal-sized trial groups. Participants in groups A through F were assigned to receive either a fractional or full dose of PCV10 or PCV13, administered as two primary doses plus one booster dose. In group A, participants received a full dose of PCV13; group B, a 40% dose of PCV13; group C, a 20% dose of PCV13; group D, a full dose of PCV10; group E, a 40% dose of PCV10; and group F, a 20% dose of PCV10. Participants in the seventh group (group G) received a full dose of PCV10 as three primary doses without a booster. Immunogenicity was assessed 4 weeks after the primary series of doses and 4 weeks after the booster dose. Noninferiority could be declared 4 weeks after the primary series if the difference in the percentage of participants with a threshold response was not more than 10% and 4 weeks after administration of the booster if the ratio of the geometric mean concentration (GMC) of IgG was more than 0.5. A vaccine dose was prespecified as noninferior if it met the noninferiority criterion for at least 8 of the 10 vaccine types in the PCV10 groups or at least 10 of the 13 vaccine types in the PCV13 groups. Carriage was assessed when participants were 9 months and 18 months of age., Results: In the per-protocol analysis, 40% of a full dose of PCV13 met the noninferiority criterion for 12 of 13 serotypes after the primary series and for 13 of 13 serotypes after the booster. The immunogenicity of the 20% dose of PCV13 and of the 40% and 20% doses of PCV10 was not noninferior to that of the full doses. Vaccine serotype-type carriage prevalence was similar across the PCV13 groups at 9 months and 18 months of age., Conclusions: In a three-dose schedule (two primary doses and a booster), 40% doses of PCV13 were noninferior to full doses for all included serotypes. Lower doses of PCV13 and PCV10 did not meet the criteria for noninferiority. One species-general life history (LH) principle posits that challenging childhood environments are coupled with a fast or faster LH strategy and associated behaviors, while secure and stable childhood environments foster behaviors conducive to a slow or slower LH strategy. This coupling between environments and LH strategies is based on the assumption that individuals' internal traits and states are independent of their external surroundings. In reality, individuals respond to external environmental conditions in alignment with their intrinsic vitality, encompassing both physical and mental states. The present study investigated attachment as an internal mental state, examining its role in mediating and moderating the association between external environmental adversity and fast LH strategies. A sample of 1169 adolescents (51% girls) from 9 countries was tracked over 10 years, starting from age 8. The results confirm both mediation and moderation and, for moderation, secure attachment nullified and insecure attachment maintained the environment-LH coupling. These findings suggest that attachment could act as an internal regulator, disrupting the contingent coupling between environmental adversity and a faster pace of life, consequently decelerating human LH.
