Abstract This study investigated the relationship between extreme precipitation and near‐surface temperature (precipitation–temperature relation) from two different perspectives, the rate of change of precipitation with temperature and dynamic (i.e., effect of the change in atmospheric motion) and thermodynamic (i.e., effect of the change in atmospheric moisture content) aspects, using a 5‐km dynamical downscaled hundreds‐year data set for past climate condition (PAST; from 1951 to 2010) and future climate condition (FUTURE; 4°C warmer than the preindustrial condition). Initially, using the observation and the PAST and FUTURE data sets, it was found that the 99th and 99.9th percentile hourly precipitation for each temperature bin (P99 and P99.9, respectively) paralleled the slope of the Clausius–Clapeyron (C–C) relation for a certain temperature range over the Tokachi River basin in Hokkaido, the northern island of Japan; however, both P99 and P99.9 decreased in the high‐temperature range. Next, we examined the cause of the P99 and P99.9 differences between PAST and FUTURE for each temperature bin by classifying dynamic and thermodynamic factors. The result showed that the thermodynamic effect dominates the differences in P99 and P99.9 between PAST and FUTURE, which means that the thermodynamic effect is the main component of the precipitation–temperature relation. Similar analyses were applied to the whole river basin, including the mountainous area. The results showed that the differences in P99 and P99.9 between PAST and FUTURE are mainly due to the thermodynamic contribution, regardless of plain or mountain area. Using such large model data sets, we could make a robust assessment of the precipitation–temperature relation and the dynamic and thermodynamic contributions to precipitation changes. Moreover, using the 5‐km resolution hundreds‐year data set enabled us to quantify the spatial distribution of such precipitation characteristics over a thousands of square kilometer catchment.

Solid tritium breeding materials are used in a high temperature condition for a long time in a fusion reactor blanket. It is expected that a certain amount of Li will be evaporated and the pebble structure will be changed. Understanding of Li mass transfer behavior in the blanket is an important issue from viewpoints of establishment of tritium cycle and tritium safety. In this work the pebbles of Li2TiO3 with excess Li were heated at 900 °C in 1000 Pa H2/Ar flow for a long time (72, 240, 720, 1200 h). The amount of Li mass loss under the hydrogen atmosphere was 0.665 wt% which was less than that under the water vapor atmosphere observed in the previous study. No significant Li mass loss was observed after 240 h. By heating for 240 h, the grain diameter increased from 1.8 to 3.1 μm and the specific surface area decreased from 0.72 to 0.20 m2/g. After 240 h, no significant grain growth and no significant decrease in the specific surface area were observed. From these results, it seems that there is a relation between Li mass loss and grain growth.

In a solid breeding blanket, ceramic breeder pebbles are in contact with reduced activation ferritic martensitic (RAFM) steel at high temperatures for years and accordingly form a corrosion layer on the blanket structural steel. Present study focuses on corrosion characteristics of EUROFER97 RAFM steel by an advanced breeder material of Li2TiO3 with excess Li (initial ratio of Li/Ti = 2.2) at 623, 823, and 1073 K under sweep gas (He + 0.1% H2) flow. Lithium titanate with excess lithium (Li2+xTiO3+y) is one of the most promising candidates among advanced tritium breeders for demonstration power plant reactors because of its good tritium release characteristics. However, the tritium breeding ratio (TBR) of Li2+xTiO3+y is smaller than that of e.g., Li2O or Li8TiO6 because of its lower Li density. Therefore, new Li-containing ceramic composites with both high stability and high Li density have been developed. Thus, this study focused on the development of a solid solution with a new characteristic. The solid-solution pebbles of Li2+xTiO3+y with Li2ZrO3 (Li2+x(Ti,Zr)O3+y), designated as LTZO, were fabricated by an emulsion method. The X-ray diffraction patterns of sintered LTZO pebbles are approximately the same as those of Li2+xTiO3+y pebbles, and no peaks attributable to Li2ZrO3 are observed. These results demonstrate that LTZO pebbles are not a two-phase material but rather a solid solution. Furthermore, LTZO pebbles were easily sintered under air. Thus, the LTZO solid solution is a candidate breeder material for super advanced (SA) tritium breeders.

Record-breaking precipitation events have been frequent in Japan in recent years. To investigate the statistical characteristics of the frequency of record-breaking events, observations can be compared with the values derived from sampling theory with a stationary state. This study counted the number of record-breaking daily and 3-day total precipitation events at 58 rain-gauge stations in Japan between 1901 and 2018. The average number of record-breaking events over the 118-year period was 5.9 for daily total precipitation, which is larger than the theoretical value of 5.4 derived using the assumption that the climate system over the same period was stationary. Sampling theory was used to incorporate the influence of the long-term temperature trend from the Clausius–Clapeyron relation associated with the saturation vapor pressure. In theory, the long-term temperature trend gives a similar number of observed record-breaking events when the long-term temperature trend is approximately 0.5 Kelvin/100 years.

Previous studies have shown that the acceleration of global warming will increase the intensity of rainfall induced by tropical cyclones (TCs) (hereinafter referred to as “TC-induced rainfall”). TC-induced rainfall is affected by TC position and topography (slope shape and direction). Thus, TC-induced rainfall is expected to vary by sub-basin due to varying topographies. However, these relationships have not been explained, as historical TCs, which occurred several decades earlier, do not exhaustively encompass all TC positions that could potentially affect each basin. We used large ensemble regional climate model experiments with 5 km grid spacing, which enabled us to prepare a huge TC database for understanding the characteristics of TC-induced rainfall over sub-basins. We quantified the characteristics of TC-induced rainfall (rainfall volume, relationship between TC position and rainfall intensity, and contribution of TC intensity on rainfall) over four sub-basins in the Tokachi River basin, central Hokkaido, northern Japan. The results reveal differences in TC-induced rainfall characteristics between the sub-basins. In addition, the large ensemble data under a future climate scenario were used to evaluate future changes in the characteristics of TC-induced rainfall for each sub-basin.

The estimation of extreme wind speeds, their directional variation, and potential future changes is essential for windresistant design and is possible using climate models. Accurate evaluations of local topographic winds such as downslope windstorms and gap winds require highresolution calculation and many ensemble years. However, few climate databases satisfy both requirements and none have been validated for extreme wind speeds. We assessed directional extreme wind speeds using a massive high-resolution ensemble climate dataset (d4PDF-5km-DS) for Hokkaido Island, Japan. Despite some issues due to limited reproducibility of spring extratropical cyclones, downslope windstorms caused by large mountains are reproduced well, indicating decreasing wind speed under predicted future climate. This study investigates the impact of future climate warming on tropical cyclones (TC) and extratropical cyclones (ETC) using the database for Policy Decision-Making for Future Climate Change (d4PDF) large ensemble simulations. Cyclone tracking was performed using the neighbor enclosed area tracking algorithm (NEAT), and TC and ETCs were identified over the western North Pacific Ocean (WNP). For cyclone frequency, it was revealed that, although a slight underestimation of the total number of TCs and ETCs in both the WNP and near Hokkaido, Japan, exists, the d4PDF reproduced the spatial distribution of both TC and ETC tracks well when compared with observations/reanalysis. The 4-K warming scenarios derived from six different sea surface temperature warming patterns showed robust decreases in TC frequency in the tropical WNP and a slight reduction in ETCs near Japan. Next, precipitation characteristics for TCs or ETCs in the vicinity of Hokkaido were examined using 5-km-mesh regional climate ensemble simulations. Four representative cyclone locations near Hokkaido are identified using K-means clustering and revealed distinct precipitation characteristics between clusters, with higher TC-associated precipitation than ETC-associated precipitation and the heaviest precipitation in the southern portion of the prefecture. The 4-K warming scenarios revealed increased precipitation for all cyclone placements for both TCs and ETCs. Last, average cyclone intensity, translation speed, and size were examined. It was shown that TCs in future climates are more intense, propagate more slowly, and are smaller in terms of enclosed vorticity area as they approach Hokkaido. This study investigates the change in extreme rainfall and river flooding for a large river basin due to climate change during the summer monsoon using a large ensemble dataset (d4PDF) coupled with the Integrated Flood Analysis System (IFAS). Frequent severe flooding causes significant damage in Japan. Therefore, we aim to provide useful information to mitigate flood damage. The study area is the Ishikari River basin (IRB) in Hokkaido, Japan. We used the d4PDF 5-km downscaled rainfall data as input for the IFAS model. The results showed that, for a given increase in extreme rainfall, the discharges from the IRB and its main sub-basins increase to a greater extent. The differences between the time of peak discharge at the reference stations in each tributary and the time of peak water level at the confluence points in the main river are evaluated. Climate change effects are significant in the southern sub-basins, wherein the amount of extreme rainfall increases by 29%- 35%, whereas the river discharge increases drastically (37%-56%). Additionally, the time difference decreases by 1.02-2.14 h. These findings will help policymakers develop future flood control measures in flood-prone areas. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ceramic breeders used in a fusion reactor blanket, which play a role in the production of tritium by the reaction with neutron, are required to have high lithium density in the pebble. Li5AlO4 contains lithium by high concentration and have a great ability of tritium breeder. However, in order to prepare the high purity powder of Li5AlO4, only a few methods with disadvantageous economically because of their requirement of a high-cost powder, Li2O. In this study, Li2CO3 powder was used instead of Li2O powder, which are not always commercially available, and a high-purity powder of α-Li5AlO4 and β-Li5AlO4 were synthesized via a solid state reaction. Mixed powders of Li2CO3 and Al2O3 with a molar ratio of 5:1 were fired at 630°C and/or 800°C in H2 and/or O2 for several hours. This low firing temperature inhibited the vaporization of lithium during the heating, so that the excess amount of lithium compounds was not necessary. A reaction process that α-LiAlO2, γ-LiAlO2, and Li2O are produced as intermediate phases has been suggested. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
