27. Synthesis of CuOx nanostructures in novel electrolytes under hydrodynamic conditions for photoelectrochemical applications.

Abstract

In this work, CuOx (x = 1 and 2) nanostructures have been synthesized by electrochemical anodization in ethylene glycol based electrolytes using oxalic acid or NaF (with or without NaOH) as complexing agents. The influence of hydrodynamic conditions and time during anodization of copper have also been evaluated. A comprehensive morphological, structural, electrochemical and photoelectrochemical characterization of the nanostructures has been performed. The results revealed the convenient use of oxalic acid and 250 rpm for 5 minutes during electrochemical anodization to obtain homogeneous CuOx nanostructures formed by spheres with Cu2O as a predominant phase. Using this nanostructure as a photocathode for N2O photoelectron-reduction, almost 100% of N2O removal was achieved after 1 h, showing the improvement of the photoelectrochemical approach vs. the photo or the electro performance. 28. Integrating Sustainable Development in Chemical Engineering Education: The Application of an Environmental Management System

Abstract

The principles of sustainable development have been integrated in chemical engineering education by means of an environmental management system. These principles have been introduced in the teaching laboratories where students perform their practical classes. In this paper, the implementation of the environmental management system, the problems arisen, the proposed solutions and the obtained results are discussed. The main problems are related to the chronological order of the courses in the chemical engineering degree, the commitment of students and the proper management of wastes. The suggested solutions are a combination of preliminary theoretical explanations, the supply of adequate documents to students and the evaluation of their work from the principles of sustainable development. Results show that after the implementation of the system, it is possible to reduce the consumption of raw materials and resources, and the generation of wastes. Results also suggest an improvement in the skills, attitudes and values of the students according to the sustainable-development principles. (Contains 4 tables and 2 figures.)

49. Buoyancy-driven flow in two interconnected rooms: effects the exterior vent location and size

Abstract

This paper describes scale-model laboratory experiments with salt-bath simulations, on the flow and stratification in two coupled rooms connected to the exterior by a single vent. The two rooms are connected by two openings one at high-level and one at low-level in the dividing wall. One 'forced' room has a buoyancy source, while the outlet vent is in the 'unforced' room and is placed in such a way that the buoyancy in the room can potentially drive an exchange flow through it. The buoyancy source is also a source of volume flux, such as cool air pumped into a room from an overhead duct, in which case the outlet is on the floor of the unforced room. We consider the effect of the size of the outlet vent on the resulting stratification in the two rooms. For a small vent only unidirectional flow occurs, and since no ambient fluid enters the rooms, the buoyancy in both rooms becomes uniform and approaches asymptotically to the buoyancy of the source. Above a critical vent size a bidirectional flow is driven through the vent by the buoyancy forces. In this case ambient fluid enters the rooms and a steady state is reached when the buoyancy flux through the outlet vent equals that of the buoyancy source. Both rooms remain stratified with two-layer weak stratification in this case, with a mean density that decreases as the size of the outlet increases. The implications for ventilation are discussed.
