The Pacific oyster (Crassostrea gigas) has been cultured for its flesh in the Seto Inland Sea, western Japan, over the last half‐century. Its production has been reported as 'fluctuating', yet little is known about changes in oyster growth performance throughout long‐term culturing in this locality. To effectively manage oyster production under future environmental challenges, this study investigated the long‐term environmental influences on oyster growth performance. Environmental data and oyster biological data were obtained from observations in Hinase waters, Seto Inland Sea, and compared for the two periods 1990 and 2015–2021. Water temperature has not significantly changed in this locality during the oyster culturing period. Lower salinity was found in July of 2015–2021 due to heavy seasonal rainfall, which had a negative impact on oysters, specifically on survival rate and total weight. A high growth rate and high meat weight at harvest were found in the individuals cultured during the period 2015–2021, yet oyster total weight showed no significant difference. Background: Primary gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma is a subtype of follicular lymphoma that originates directly from the gastrointestinal tract. Pathologically, it exhibits substantial similarities with the secondary gastrointestinal involvement observed in nodal follicular lymphoma. However, primary gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma presents clinically distinct features, necessitating divergent considerations in treatment selection compared with nodal follicular lymphoma. Areas covered: This narrative review focused on recent articles (2018–2023) regarding the long-term prognosis and treatment options for gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma. In addition, a brief overview of gastrointestinal follicular lymphomas is provided. Expert opinion: Patients with primary gastrointestinal follicular lymphoma often present with a low tumor burden. Lymphoma lesions typically remain asymptomatic for several years or may undergo spontaneous regression without immediate treatment. Therefore, a 'watch and wait' approach is justified. Conversely, when large tumor masses are identified in the gastrointestinal tract, the potential for tumor bleeding or intestinal obstruction requires timely therapeutic interventions. Key Clinical Message: Conjunctival hemangioma and lymphangioma are rare and their long‐term follow‐up description has been scarce. In our two patients, conjunctival vascular and lymphatic malformations remained stable in decades and could be observed without treatment. A 65‐year‐old woman with diabetic retinopathy underwent glaucoma surgery to construct a filtering bleb adjacent to conjunctival hemangioma, and showed bleb function and stable hemangioma for a decade. A 1.5‐year‐old girl with right eye lid and cheek swelling by orbital to facial lymphangioma was followed for visual acuity development. Conjunctival lymphangioma was stable in 20 years. The pH of coastal seawater varies based on several local forcings, such as water circulation, terrestrial inputs, and biological processes, and these forcings are changing along with global climate change. Understanding the mechanism of pH variation in each coastal area is thus important for a realistic future projection that considers changes in these forcings. From 2020 to 2021, we performed parallel year-round observations of pH and related ocean parameters at five stations around the Japanese coast (Miyako Bay, Shizugawa Bay, Kashiwazaki Coast, Hinase Archipelago, and Ohno Strait) to understand the characteristics of short-term pH variations and their forcings. Annual variability (∼ 1 standard deviation) of pH and aragonite saturation state (Ωar) were 0.05–0.09 and 0.25–0.29, respectively, for three areas with low anthropogenic pressures (Miyako Bay, Kashiwazaki Coast, and Shizugawa Bay), while it increased to 0.16–0.21 and 0.52–0.58, respectively, in two areas with medium anthropogenic pressures (Hinase Archipelago and Ohno Strait in Seto Inland Sea). Statistical assessment of temporal variability at various timescales revealed that most of the annual variabilities in both pH and Ωar were derived by short-term variation at a timescale of <10 d, rather than seasonal-scale variation. Our analyses further illustrated that most of the short-term pH variation was caused by biological processes, while both thermodynamic and biological processes equally contributed to the temporal variation in Ωar. The observed results showed that short-term acidification with Ωar < 1.5 occurred occasionally in Miyako and Shizugawa bays, while it occurred frequently in the Hinase Archipelago and Ohno Strait. Most of such short-term acidified events were related to short-term low-salinity events. Our analyses showed that the amplitude of short-term pH variation was linearly correlated with that of short-term salinity variation, and its regression coefficient at the time of high freshwater input was positively correlated with the nutrient concentration of the main river that flows into the coastal area. Key Clinical Message: It is important to stain acid‐fact bacilli on the smear of abscess puncture in addition to Gram stain to detect nontuberculous and tuberculous mycobacteria in the early phase since both can cause rare and challenging extrapulmonary manifestations. A 56‐year‐old otherwise healthy woman developed abscess from dacryocystitis in the right lower eyelid. The smear of puncture fluid showed acid‐fast bacilli and Mycobacterium abscessus was identified after a month. The early start of clarithromycin/ethambutol was switched to clarithromycin/levofloxacin. Debridement specimen after 7‐month treatment showed granulomatous tissue with no bacilli. Coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation are progressing primarily due to the increase in anthropogenic CO 2. Coastal acidification has been reported to have effects that are anticipated to become more severe as acidification progresses, including inhibiting the formation of shells of calcifying organisms such as shellfish, which include Pacific oysters (Crassostrea gigas), one of the most important aquaculture resources in Japan. Moreover, there is concern regarding the combined impacts of coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation on Pacific oysters. However, spatiotemporal variations in acidification and deoxygenation indicators such as pH, the aragonite saturation state (Ωarag), and dissolved oxygen have not been observed and projected in oceanic Pacific oyster farms in Japan. To assess the present impacts and project future impacts of coastal warming, acidification, and deoxygenation on Pacific oysters, we performed continuous in situ monitoring, numerical modeling, and microscopic examination of Pacific oyster larvae in the Hinase area of Okayama Prefecture and Shizugawa Bay in Miyagi Prefecture, Japan, both of which are famous for their Pacific oyster farms. Our monitoring results first found Ωarag values lower than the critical level of acidification for Pacific oyster larvae in Hinase, although no impact of acidification on larvae was identified by microscopic examination. Our modeling results suggest that Pacific oyster larvae are anticipated to be affected more seriously by the combined impacts of coastal warming and acidification, with lower pH and Ωarag values and a prolonged spawning period, which may shorten the oyster shipping period and lower the quality of oysters. A 41-year-old woman showed a palpable mass at the superonasal orbital edge on the right side. Magnetic resonance imaging demonstrated a lobulated fluid-containing tubular mass which extended anteriorly to posteriorly along the medial orbital wall, nasal to the eyeball. She was followed once a year for 8 years until the age of 49 years when she decided to undergo surgical resection because of the enlarged mass. The lobulated large mass was resected and the pathology showed sparsely distributed spindle cells, positive for CD34, in alcian blue-positive mucous substances, indicative of myxoma. Postoperative magnetic resonance imaging showed residual lobulated tubular mass along the optic nerve on the medial side and superior to the eyeball. The residual orbital mass showed stable structure with more evident connection with the ethmoid sinus lesion, suggestive of the ethmoid origin, in 12 years until the age of 61 years. In the review of 20 patients with orbital myxomas in the literature, in addition to this case, roughly classified locations in the orbit were retrobulbar in 8 patients, on the lateral side of the orbit in 4, on the superior side in 6, on the medial side in 1 (this patient), and in the orbit with no specific description in 2. In pathological examinations, immunohistochemistry was not done in 8 patients, done but all negative in 2, and positive in 11 patients: nerve sheath myxoma was diagnosed in 3 patients based on positive S100 staining. A 63-year-old woman, with 11-year history of breast cancer, showed bilateral lacrimal gland enlargement on magnetic resonance imaging. Gallium-67 scintigraphy, as the standard at that time in 2004, demonstrated abnormally high uptake only in bilateral lacrimal glands. The lacrimal glands were extirpated and the pathological diagnosis was mantle cell lymphoma (MCL). She underwent bilateral orbital radiation, based on no uptake of gallium-67 in other sites of the body. In a month, bone marrow biopsy revealed the infiltration with MCL, positive for cyclin D1. She showed hepatic lymphadenopathy and splenomegaly, and so received 2 cycles of alternating Hyper-CVAD therapy and high-dose methotrexate with cytarabine, combined with rituximab, in 2 months, leading to complete remission. She underwent autologous peripheral blood stem cell transplantation and was well until the age of 68 years when she showed a recurrent intratracheal submucosal lesion of lymphoma and underwent one course of reduced-dose CHOP combined with rituximab. Next year, the left rib resection revealed the metastasis of breast adenocarcinoma, leading to daily oral letrozole. Further 2 years later, computed tomographic scan demonstrated multiple submucosal nodular lesions in the trachea and bronchi, together with cervical and supraclavicular lymphadenopathy, and intratracheal lesion biopsy and bone marrow biopsy proved the involvement with MCL. She underwent 2 courses of bendamustine and rituximab, resulting in complete remission but died of metastatic breast cancer at the age of 74 years.
