Abstract Fiber-based interferometers receive significant interest as they lead to miniaturization of optoacoustic and ultrasound detectors without the quadratic loss of sensitivity common to piezoelectric elements. Nevertheless, in contrast to piezoelectric crystals, current fiber-based ultrasound detectors operate with narrow ultrasound bandwidth which limits the application range and spatial resolution achieved in imaging implementations. We port the concept of silicon waveguide etalon detection to optical fibers using a sub-acoustic reflection terminator to a Bragg grating embedded etalon resonator (EER), uniquely implementing direct and forward-looking access to incoming ultrasound waves. Precise fabrication of the terminator is achieved by continuously recording the EER spectrum during polishing and fitting the spectra to a theoretically calculated spectrum for the selected thickness. Characterization of the EER inventive design reveals a small aperture (10.1 µm) and an ultra-wide bandwidth (160 MHz) that outperforms other fiber resonators and enables an active detection area and overall form factor that is smaller by more than an order of magnitude over designs based on piezoelectric transducers. We discuss how the EER paves the way for the most adept fiber-based miniaturized sound detection today, circumventing the limitations of currently available designs.

Uniform linear array (ULA) radars are widely used in the collision-avoidance radar systems of small unmanned aerial vehicles (UAVs). In practice, a ULA’s multi-target direction of arrival (DOA) estimation performance suffers from significant performance degradation owing to the limited number of physical elements. To improve the underdetermined DOA estimation performance of a ULA radar mounted on a small UAV platform, we propose a nonuniform linear motion sampling underdetermined DOA estimation method. Using the motion of the UAV platform, the echo signal is sampled at different positions. Then, according to the concept of difference co-array, a virtual ULA with multiple array elements and a large aperture is synthesized to increase the degrees of freedom (DOFs). Through position analysis of the original and motion arrays, we propose a nonuniform linear motion sampling method based on ULA for determining the optimal DOFs. Under the condition of no increase in the aperture of the physical array, the proposed method obtains a high DOF with fewer sampling runs and greatly improves the underdetermined DOA estimation performance of ULA. The results of numerical simulations conducted herein verify the superior performance of the proposed method.

Doubled haploid (DH) technology is an important tool in crop breeding because it can significantly accelerate the breeding process. ZmPLA1/MATL/NLD and ZmDMP are two key genes controlling haploid induction (HI) in maize, exhibiting a synergistic effect. However, it is unknown whether knock out of ZmDMP orthologs can stimulate HI in rice. In this study, a ZmPLA1 ortholog (OsPLA1) and two ZmDMP orthologs (OsDMP3 and OsDMP6) were identified in rice. All three genes encode plasma membrane-localized proteins and were highly expressed in mature anthers. Knockout of OsPLA1 in both Minghui 63 and Nipponbare resulted in reduced seed setting rate (SSR) and caused HI. The osdmp3, osdmp6 and the double mutant failed to trigger HI independently, nor increased the haploid induction rate (HIR) when combined with ospla1. Repeated pollinations operations of QX654A with the ospla1 mutant significantly improve SSR, while reducing HIR. RNA-seq profiling of mature ospla1 mutant anthers indicated that a large number of differentially expressed genes (DEGs) were enriched in redox homeostasis and lipid metabolic GO terms, plant hormone signal transduction, and MAPK signaling pathways. These findings provide important insights towards construction of an efficient DH breeding technology and study of the molecular mechanism of HI in rice.

Japan Atomic Energy Agency (JAEA) is developing an artificial intelligence (AI) aided integrated digital system: “Advanced Reactor Knowledge- and AI-aided Design Integration Approach through the whole plant lifecycle (ARKADIA)”, to provide the best possible solutions for challenges arising during the design process, safety assessment, and operation of a nuclear plant over its life cycle. Until 2023, the platform for a common function and subsystems, namely ARKADIA-Design for design study, ARKADIA-Safety for safety assessment, and ARKADIA-knowledge management system (KMS) for the knowledge base, are separately being developed. This paper describes the development concepts of the platform, the progress of the application study of design optimization in ARKADIA-Design, the progress of optimization model development and optimization functionality based on AI technology in ARKADIA-Safety, and the structure of the knowledge base and application of AI technology to ARKADIA-KMS. In subsystems, necessary modules and process integration to obtain an optimal solution in a designated problem of plant design have been advanced. For further development, a strategy for unifying the subsystems with the AI-aided platform into one system, ARKADIA, and the extension of capabilities of the numerical analyses and evaluation technologies required for plant design until 2028 are presented.

Objectives Current cognitive screening and diagnostic instruments rely on visually dependent tasks and are, therefore, not suitable to assess cognitive impairment (CI) in visually impaired older adults. We describe the content development of the VISually Independent test battery Of NeuroCOGnition (VISION-Cog)–a new diagnostic tool to evaluate CI in visually impaired older Singaporean adults.Design The content development phase consisted of two iterative stages: a neuropsychological consultation and literature review (stage 1) and an expert-panel discussion (stage 2). In stage 1, we investigated currently available neuropsychological test batteries for CI to inform constructions of our preliminary test battery. We then deliberated this battery during a consensus meeting using the Modified Nominal Group technique (stage 2) to decide, via agreement of five experts, the content of a pilot neuropsychological battery for the visually impaired.Setting Singapore Eye Research Institute.Participants Stakeholders included researchers, psychologists, neurologists, neuro-ophthalmologists, geriatricians and psychiatrists.Outcome measure pilot VISION-Cog.Results The two-stage process resulted in a pilot VISION-Cog consisting of nine vision-independent neuropsychological tests, including the modified spatial memory test, list learning, list recall and list recognition, adapted token test, semantic fluency, modified spatial analysis, verbal subtests of the frontal battery assessment, digit symbol, digit span forwards, and digit span backwards. These tests encompassed five cognitive domains–memory and learning, language, executive function, complex attention, and perceptual-motor abilities. The expert panel suggested improvements to the clarity of test instructions and culturally relevant test content. These suggestions were incorporated and iteratively pilot-tested by the study team until no further issues emerged.Conclusions We have developed a five-domain and nine-test VISION-Cog pilot instrument capable of replacing vision-dependent diagnostic batteries in aiding the clinician-based diagnosis of CI in visually impaired older adults. Subsequent phases will examine the VISION-Cog’s feasibility, comprehensibility and acceptability; and evaluate its diagnostic performance.

Objectives We pilot-tested the VISually Independent test battery Of NeuroCOGnition (VISION-Cog) to determine its feasibility, comprehensibility and acceptability in evaluating cognitive impairment (CI) in visually impaired older Asian adults.Design The VISION-Cog was iteratively fine-tuned through pilot studies and expert-panel discussion. In the first pilot study (Stage 1), we recruited 15 visually impaired and cognitively normal participants aged ≥60 years to examine the pilot VISION-Cog’s feasibility (length of time to administer), comprehensibility (clarity of instructions) and acceptability (participant burden). We then presented the pilot results to the expert panel (Stage 2) who decided via agreement on a revised version of the VISION-Cog. Subsequently, we conducted a second pilot study (Stage 3) on another four participants to ascertain improvement in feasibility, comprehensibility and acceptability of the revised version.Setting Singapore Eye Research Institute.Participants Nineteen Asian adults aged ≥60 years with visual impairment (defined as near visual acuity worse than N8) were recruited.Outcome measure Revised VISION-Cog.Result The VISION-Cog was deemed feasible, taking approximately 60 min to complete on average. All participants agreed that the test instructions were clear, and the battery did not cause undue discomfort or frustration. The data collector rated all tests as very user-friendly (score of 5/5). Minor modifications to the pilot VISION-Cog were suggested by the panel to improve its safety, clarity of instructions and content validity, which were incorporated and iteratively tested in the second pilot study until no further issues emerged.Conclusions Using an iterative mixed-methods process, we have developed a feasible, comprehensible and acceptable 5-domain and 9-item visually independent VISION-Cog test battery suitable to assist CI diagnosis in older adults with visual impairment. We will assess its diagnostic potential against clinician-based assessment of CI in subsequent phases.

This study investigates the perceptions of Vietnamese English-majored students towards online learning courses during the COVID-19 pandemic. While online learning has been shown to have numerous benefits, few studies have focused on exploring perceptions of Vietnamese learners of English (EFL) towards online learning course at university level in the Vietnamese context. To address this gap, the present study surveyed 60 Vietnamese EFL learners who have experience with online courses offered by a university in southern Vietnam, using the Technology Acceptance Model (TAM) developed (Davis, Bagozzi, & Warshaw, 1989). The findings reveal various challenges and benefits of the online learning mode, which are reported by learners through their perceived usefulness and perceived ease of use when taking online courses. The learners' own experiences during online courses were also revealed. The outcomes of this study provide insights into the unique experiences of Vietnamese EFL learners with e-learning and offer suggestions for optimizing online education for this population in university settings.

Abstract Background Burkholderia pseudomallei is a causative agent of melioidosis, a fatal infectious disease highly prevalent in the tropics where traditional medicinal plants are widely used for the treatment of various human ailments. In this study, we aimed to evaluate the in vitro antibacterial activity of common eligible herbs and medicinal plants against B. pseudomallei. Thermal and gastric stability, antibacterial spectrum, bactericidal activity, and cell cytotoxicity were also tested to verify the possible usage of these plants in the treatment of melioidosis. Results Eighteen eligible herbs and twenty-one medicinal plants were collected. Herb juices and aqueous plant samples extracted at different temperatures were prepared for antibacterial testing. A higher proportion of aqueous plant extracts (17/21; 80.9%) against B. pseudomallei was observed, in comparison with that of herb juices (8/18; 44.5%). Two herb juices and twelve aqueous plant extracts were selected for further tests. The juices of A. sativum and A. tuberosum decreased their antimicrobial activity when treated at higher temperatures whereas the aqueous plant extracts increased their antimicrobial activity when prepared at 70 and 100 °C. The herb juices showed a broader spectrum of antimicrobial activity than the aqueous plant extracts. All samples showed less cytotoxicity on the HT29, HepG2, and HEK293 cell lines. At the 2× minimal inhibitory concentration (MIC), aqueous extracts of Blechnum orientale, Breynia fruticose, Psidium guajava, Rhodomyrtus tomentosa, Rosa odorata, and Schima wallichii showed similar bactericidal activity to that of amoxicillin clavulanic acid. The antimicrobial activity of Mangifera indica, Punica granatum, and R. tomentosa remained under the stimulated gastric conditions. Conclusion Our data indicate that traditional medicinal plants prepared by decoction could be effectively used to treat melioidosis via the oral route. Further in vivo investigations are needed to explore other alternative therapies for the prevention and treatment of tested pathogenic bacterial species.

Multiimage super-resolution (MISR), as one of the most promising directions in remote sensing, has become a needy technique in the satellite market. A sequence of images collected by satellites often has plenty of views and a long time span, so integrating multiple low-resolution views into a high-resolution image with details emerges as a challenging problem. However, most MISR methods based on deep learning cannot make full use of multiple images. Their fusion modules are incapable of adapting to an image sequence with weak temporal correlations well. To cope with these problems, we propose a novel end-to-end framework called TR-MISR. It consists of three parts: An encoder based on residual blocks, a transformer-based fusion module, and a decoder based on subpixel convolution. Specifically, by rearranging multiple feature maps into vectors, the fusion module can assign dynamic attention to the same area of different satellite images simultaneously. In addition, TR-MISR adopts an additional learnable embedding vector that fuses these vectors to restore the details to the greatest extent. TR-MISR has successfully applied the transformer to MISR tasks for the first time, notably reducing the difficulty of training the transformer by ignoring the spatial relations of image patches. Extensive experiments performed on the PROBA-V Kelvin dataset demonstrate the superiority of the proposed model that provides an effective method for transformers in other low-level vision tasks.

The personnel preparation of early intervention/early childhood special educator (EI/ECSE) candidates is a pivotal stage in supporting the development of professionals who can effectively work with young children with and at-risk of developmental disabilities, their families, and other service providers. This process encompasses a multifaceted approach to equip candidates with knowledge, skills, and attitudes/dispositions to successfully work within the field. This compilation article includes multiple authors of each section who share strategies, assignments, tools, and experiences to center the Initial Practice-Based Standards for Early Interventionists/Early Childhood Special Educators (Division for Early Childhood [DEC] of the Council for Exceptional Children [CEC], 2020; hereafter referred to as the EI/ECSE Standards) and DEC's Recommended Practices (RPs). These strategies are shared through a "spiraling curriculum" framework, and progress from an awareness level to reflection of candidates' own practice. In addition, this article shares related resources to consider in planning for innovative coursework and practicum/student teaching opportunities. Specific examples of spiraling experiences to deepen learning through opportunities to introduce content aligned to RPs and EI/ECSE Standards are included.

Online teaching has become an imperative approach in today's society. However, as an essential approach, using live streaming to teach students in small groups, particularly rural primary school students, has not been extensively studied. To address this gap, an inquiry-based model, predict-do/observe-quiz/discuss-explain-transfer (P-D/O-Q/D-E-T), was adopted for live streaming with action, and its performance was analysed. Reflection by teachers can lead them to a deeper understanding to capture the profound impact of an educational program. In the present study, eight teachers who had experience assisting rural students in this experiment were invited to rate their points of view on immersion, social interactivity, humanness, and value perception. Examining the consistency of teachers' viewpoints using the hermeneutic method, the results showed that they highly supported viewing these four constructs using live streaming to conduct inquiry-based science learning with action. As expected, using live streaming to deliver teaching with the P-D/O-Q/D-E-T approach can enrich other online science teaching.

The oil and natural gas resources of the Bohai Sea are mainly marginal oil fields, and there are currently a large number of structures that are approaching or have reached the end of their service life called aging structures. The interactions between ice and offshore structures could lead to significant ice-induced vibration. Ice-induced vibrations may evoke fatigue damage in tubular joints, which results in severe dangers for offshore platforms in the Bohai Sea. Dynamic ice force models and sea ice fatigue environmental parameters have not been well developed in the current design codes. It is not accurate to evaluate the fatigue damage of structures only with numerical simulation. In this paper, a faster method for evaluating fatigue damage on aging structures is proposed. Firstly, the approximate linear relationship between the fatigue hot spot stress and the vibration response of the deck structure has been discovered using dynamic analysis for jacket platform of Bohai Sea. Then, the procedure of the fatigue damage evaluation of the aging structures in the Bohai Sea is established. Finally, the numerical simulation of the structure is carried out considering ice thickness, ice velocity, ice direction, and action height of sea ice. Fatigue damage is calculated by the fatigue hot spot stress and the Palmgren–Miner rule. The measured data on the platform in the Bohai Sea are selected to obtain the fatigue hot spot stress using a mathematical model. The fatigue damage results considering the actual ice conditions of a jacket structure in the Bohai Sea are compared using the proposed method and finite element analysis. The comparison of the results verifies the rationality of the method proposed in this work.

Despite the widespread use of mobile digital devices such as iPads in teaching and learning, there is little research on the ways in which content teachers make use of the technological affordances of the iPad to achieve pedagogical goals in bilingual/multilingual classrooms. This article adopts translanguaging as an analytical perspective to explore how the use of the iPad extends the semiotic and spatial repertoires for enabling the English Medium Instruction (EMI) teacher to create a translanguaging space for supporting multilingual students' learning of new academic knowledge. The data for this article is based on a linguistic ethnographic project in an EMI mathematics classroom in a secondary school in Hong Kong. Multimodal Conversation Analysis is used to analyse the classroom interactional data, triangulated with the video-stimulated-recall-interviews that are analysed using Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis. The article argues that the iPad provides opportunities for the EMI teacher to fully exploit the semiotic and spatial resources for creating a technology-mediated space in the classroom. Such a space in turn allows the teacher to accomplish content teaching and build a more engaging environment for learning.

Decades of research has documented the consequences of allocating school students into a hierarchy of classes with narrow ranges of mathematics attainment, a process known as streaming, tracking, setting, or "ability" grouping. The purported benefits of streaming are inconsistent and disputed, but the harms are clear, in particular, (1) the limiting curriculum often available in low streams and (2) the loss of self-confidence that results from being positioned in a low stream. Building on this foundation, we discuss streaming in mathematics as tied to systemic racism in Aotearoa New Zealand, where the harmful effects of streaming fall most heavily on Maori and Pasifika students. Previous analyses of race and streaming have focused primarily on the racial composition of streamed classes, bias in stream allocation, and racialised teacher expectations in streamed settings. In contrast, we focus on the emotional consequences of streaming, arguing that streaming produces racialised emotions of shame and entitlement as unintended but predictable consequences. We illustrate the racialised production of entitlement and shame through collaborative storying, interweaving our own biographies with a re-analysis of student interviews from two prior studies.

The advancements in image super-resolution technology have led to its widespread use in remote sensing applications. However, there is currently a lack of a general solution for the reconstruction of satellite images at arbitrary resolutions. The existing scale-arbitrary super-resolution methods are primarily predicated on learning either a discrete representation (DR) or a continuous representation (CR) of the image, with DR retaining the sensitivity to resolution and CR guaranteeing the generalization of the model. In this paper, we propose a novel image representation that combines the discrete and continuous representation, known as CDCR, which enables the extension of images to any desired resolution in a plug-and-play manner. CDCR consists of two components: a CR-based dense prediction that gathers more available information and a DR-based resolution-specific refinement that adjusts the predicted values of local pixels. Furthermore, we introduce a scale cumulative ascent (SCA) method, which enhances the performance of the dense prediction and improves the accuracy of the generated images at ultra-high magnifications. The efficacy and dependability of CDCR are substantiated by extensive experiments conducted on multiple remote sensing datasets, providing strong support for scenarios that require accurate images.

Environmental indicators for nitrogen (N) use efficiency (NUE) based only on N inputs and N removal are becoming widely used in science, policy, and commercial supply chains to track the sustainability of food production. However, these indicators do not reflect the contribution of inherent soil productivity, which can supply half of crop demand and is therefore a core principle in determining how much fertilizer is needed and the corresponding risk of N losses. Using a global dataset of optimal N rates for crop production, we evaluated the performance of conventional (N recovery efficiency) and simplified NUE indicators to understand their relationship and respective limitations, helping inform policy efforts for simultaneously meeting food production and sustainability goals. A key finding is that conventional agronomic approaches designed to optimize crop productivity and profit related to N fertilizer inputs have tradeoffs for environmental performance, with only 35 and 31 % of observations (n=448) falling within sustainable ranges for NUE. Meanwhile, simplified NUE indicators such as N balance or the ratio of N outputs to inputs were unable to detect sites with inherently low N recovery efficiency and high risk of N losses, highlighting a weakness of neglecting soil N supply in their calculations. Together these results suggest the need for a combined approach that merges insights from locally available agronomic data on N recovery efficiency with global environmental thresholds for NUE. Using our findings as a case study, we propose new steps forward for evaluating NUE in different cropping systems and regions to enhance food security while mitigating N pollution.

Coupling Weyl quasiparticles and charge density waves (CDWs) can lead to fascinating band renormalization and many-body effects beyond band folding and Peierls gaps. For the quasi-one-dimensional chiral compound (TaSe4)2I with an incommensurate CDW transition at TC = 263 K, photoemission mappings thus far are intriguing due to suppressed emission near the Fermi level. Models for this unconventional behavior include axion insulator phases, correlation pseudogaps, polaron subbands, bipolaron bound states, etc. Our photoemission measurements show sharp quasiparticle bands crossing the Fermi level at T > TC, but for T < TC, these bands retain their dispersions with no Peierls or axion gaps at the Weyl points. Instead, occupied band edges recede from the Fermi level, opening a spectral gap. Our results confirm localization of quasiparticles (holes created by photoemission) is the key physics, which suppresses spectral weights over an energy window governed by incommensurate modulation and inherent phase defects of CDW.

The mechanisms of postacute medical conditions and unexplained symptoms after SARS-CoV-2 infection [Long Covid (LC)] are incompletely understood. There is growing evidence that viral persistence, immune dysregulation, and T cell dysfunction may play major roles. We performed whole-body positron emission tomography imaging in a well-characterized cohort of 24 participants at time points ranging from 27 to 910 days after acute SARS-CoV-2 infection using the radiopharmaceutical agent [18F]F-AraG, a selective tracer that allows for anatomical quantitation of activated T lymphocytes. Tracer uptake in the postacute COVID-19 group, which included those with and without continuing symptoms, was higher compared with prepandemic controls in many regions, including the brain stem, spinal cord, bone marrow, nasopharyngeal and hilar lymphoid tissue, cardiopulmonary tissues, and gut wall. T cell activation in the spinal cord and gut wall was associated with the presence of LC symptoms. In addition, tracer uptake in lung tissue was higher in those with persistent pulmonary symptoms specifically. Increased T cell activation in these tissues was also observed in many individuals without LC. Given the high [18F]F-AraG uptake detected in the gut, we obtained colorectal tissue for in situ hybridization of SARS-CoV-2 RNA and immunohistochemical studies in a subset of five participants with LC symptoms. We identified intracellular SARS-CoV-2 single-stranded spike protein-encoding RNA in rectosigmoid lamina propria tissue in all five participants and double-stranded spike protein-encoding RNA in three participants up to 676 days after initial COVID-19, suggesting that tissue viral persistence could be associated with long-term immunologic perturbations.

Abstract Background Tea, which is produced from new shoots of existing tea plants (Camellia sinensis), is one of the most popular, non-alcoholic, healthy beverages worldwide. Colletotrichum camelliae is one of the dominant fungal pathogens of tea. The interaction of C. camelliae with tea could be a useful pathosystem to elucidate various aspects of woody, medicinal plant-fungal interactions. Currently, many studies characterizing resistance or virulence and aggressiveness use lesion size at the infection sites on the leaves to quantify the growth of the pathogen. However, this method does not offer the sensitivity needed for the robust quantification of small changes in aggressiveness or the accurate quantification of pathogen growth at the early stages of infection. Results A quantitative real-time polymerase chain reaction (qRT-PCR) assay was developed for the quantification of C. camelliae growth on tea plant. This method was based on the comparison of fungal DNA in relation to plant biomass. This assay was used to investigate the phenotypes of tea plant cultivars in response to C. camelliae infection. Two cultivars, Zhongcha 108 (ZC108) and Longjing 43 (LJ43), were tested with this method. ZC108 was previously reported as an anthracnose-resistant cultivar against C. camelliae, while LJ43 was susceptible. The traditional lesion measurement method showed that both cultivars were susceptible to a virulent strain of C. camelliae, while the qRT-PCR approach indicated that very little fungal growth occurred in the anthracnose-resistant cultivar ZC108. The observed results in this study were consistent with previously published research. In addition, the DNA-based real-time PCR method was applied for analysis of pathogenic differences in general C. camelliae isolates and among several Colletotrichum spp that infect tea. Conclusions This study showed that the DNA-based qRT-PCR technique is rapid, highly sensitive and easily applicable for routine experiments and could be used in screening for resistant tea plant cultivars or to identify differences in pathogen aggressiveness within and among Colletotrichum species.

The COVID-19 pandemic has drawn the attention of educators to the blended learning model. This study developed a remote blended game-based learning activity that integrates digital game--based learning (DGBL) and blended learning (including online synchronous and asynchronous learning). This method emphasizes that in the online synchronous learning activity, students firstly use mini-educational digital games for group collaborative autonomous pre-learning and then take part in a problem-solving discussion activity guided by the teacher. Afterwards, students complete personal inquiry learning tasks in the asynchronous online activity and conduct asynchronous discussions. This study employed a quasi-experimental design. Participants were 73 senior high school students. The first group used the remote blended game-based learning that integrated DGBL into online synchronous learning. The second group used the face-to-face blended game-based learning approach that integrated DGBL into physical classroom learning. The third group used the remote blended video-based learning that integrated online synchronous video-based learning. The three groups conducted the same online asynchronous inquiry learning tasks. The results found that the remote blended game-based learning activity not only significantly promoted the students' learning performance in online synchronous learning but also supported their learning performance in online asynchronous learning. Besides, most students' discussion messages were mostly related to the learning tasks and topic.

Short scales are time-efficient for participants and cost-effective in research. However, researchers often mistakenly expect short scales to have the same reliability as long ones without considering the effect of scale length. We argue that applying a universal benchmark for alpha is problematic as the impact of low-quality items is greater on shorter scales. In this study, we proposed simple guidelines for item reduction using the "alpha-if-item-deleted" procedure in scale construction. An item can be removed if alpha increases or decreases by less than 0.02, especially for short scales. Conversely, an item should be retained if alpha decreases by more than 0.04 upon its removal. For reliability benchmarks, 0.80 is relatively safe in most conditions, but higher benchmarks are recommended for longer scales and smaller sample sizes. Supplementary analyses, including item content, face validity, and content coverage, are critical to ensure scale quality.

Translanguaging remains a timely and important topic in bi/multilingual education. The most recent turn in translanguaging scholarship involves attention to translanguaging "in context" in response to critiques of translanguaging as a universally empowering educational practice. In this paper, seven early career translanguaging scholars propose a framework for researching translanguaging "in context," drawing on the Douglas Fir Group's (2016) transdisciplinary framework for language acquisition. Examining translanguaging in context entails paying attention to who in a classroom wields power, as a result of their greater proficiency in societally valued languages, their more "standard" ways of speaking these languages, their greater familiarity with academic literacies valued at school, and/or their more "legitimate" forms of translanguaging. In our framework for researching translanguaging in context, we propose three principles. The first principle is obvious: (1) not to do so apolitically. The other two principles describe a synergy between ethnographic research and teacher-researcher collaborative research: (2) ethnographic research can assess macro-level language ideologies and enacted language hegemonies at the micro- and meso levels, and (3) teacher-researcher collaborations must create and sustain inclusive, equitable classroom social orders and alternative academic norms "different" from the ones documented to occur in context if left by chance.

Symptoms of inattention (IA), hyperactivity, and impulsivity present in school-aged children are important indications of developmental problems. The assessment of these symptoms largely relies on questionnaires completed by parents, teachers, and the children themselves. However, inherent perceptual biases may lead to inaccuracies in these evaluations. This study investigates the biases among different respondents for 41 elementary-aged students (19 male and 22 female) by analyzing their responses on the attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder-rating scale (ADHD-RS) through a novel virtual reality-based objective measure (AttnKare-D). Correlation analysis reveals higher agreement between parents and students compared to other informant pairs. Nevertheless, when compared with the objective measure, parents and students do not exhibit distinct separation between high and low-scoring samples, whereas teachers demonstrate significant separation on various objective measure factors. This discrepancy suggests that teachers may possess a more accurate baseline for peer-related measurements, leading to a more objective evaluation of ADHD symptoms. However, it is essential to acknowledge that teachers are not entirely exempt from biases. Gender-specific comparisons reveal notable differences, with male children showing the largest separation in distractibility and female children in movement. In conclusion, this study emphasizes the significance of recognizing and addressing potential biases when interpreting questionnaires assessing symptoms of IA, hyperactivity, and impulsivity in children.

Began with Computer-Assisted Language Learning (CALL) in the 1960s and extended to the widespread use of various Mobile-Assisted Language Learning (MALL) tools in education, language learning has embraced technology early on, achieved noticeable results, and found extensive practical use. However, due to the challenges in accessing user data from various language learning platforms, the measurement and assessment of language-related variables continue to rely on self-reporting and peer evaluations. This reliance hampers researchers to observe language learning from alternative perspectives, especially when it comes to analyzing raw behavioral data. To explore potential correlations between different learning modes, this study analyzed 2 million samples from Chinese students using an English language learning application. The study quantified the effectiveness of English vocabulary learning using the economic concept of return on investment (ROI) as an evaluation metric and identified four distinct learning strategies. It observed significant differences in learning ROI among learners who adopted different strategies. Based on this analysis, we recommend the following suggestions for improving language learning ROI: when memorizing new vocabulary, investing excessive amounts of time may be counterproductive; a more effective approach is to "eat less but more often," which means arranging review sessions at a reasonable pace and shortening the interval between each review.

A growing number of studies have explored the ways how teachers contingently respond to students' unexpected responses or a lack of student responses in second language classrooms. From a sociocultural perspective, teacher contingency involves a departure from the lesson plan in local response to the unexpected or unforeseeable actions in the classroom interactions (van Lier, 2001). This study adopts translanguaging as an analytical perspective in order to examine how a teacher employs various resources to contingently respond to students' initiatives and reformulate his utterances in order to prompt student participation. The data are based on a larger linguistic ethnographic project in a Hong Kong English-Medium-Instruction secondary history classroom. This paper reconceptualizes the notion of teacher contingency and argues that the process of how the teacher contingently responds to the unexpected outcomes that arise in real-time interactions is a process of translanguaging. Such a process requires the teacher in orchestrating the available linguistic and multimodal resources to construct pedagogical actions on the spot, instead of being planned in advance.

Purpose – Drawing on equity theory, social exchange theory and goal setting theory, the purpose of this paper is to investigate the contingencies on the link between employees’ budgetary participation and their work performance. Specifically, this study addresses the research questions: whether vertical information sharing and budget goal commitment mediate the relationship between employees’ budgetary participation and their work performance; and whether employees’ perceived budget fairness can strengthen the positive effects of budgetary participation on vertical information sharing and budget goal commitment. Design/methodology/approach – Survey data were collected from a sample of 556 low to middle level managers of business organizations in Vietnam. The research model and its hypotheses were tested using PLS-SEM. The standardized root mean squared residual value of the composite model was employed to assess model fit. Common method bias was also checked using the marker-variable approach. Findings – This study has two key findings: both vertical information sharing and budget goal commitment partially mediate the positive effects of budgetary participation on work performance; and both dimensions of perceived budget fairness (distributive and procedural) elevate the positive relationships of budgetary participation – vertical information sharing and budgetary participation – budget goal commitment. Practical implications – The findings could benefit businesses in Vietnam and similar market contexts. Specifically, top management needs to select a proper level of budgetary participation that can facilitate information sharing vertically within the organization and motivate their employees to be more committed to achieve budget goals. Besides, the top management also needs to ensure that their employees perceive the fairness in the budgeting process. Originality/value – The study contributes a greater understanding as regards the mediating roles of vertical information sharing and budget goal commitment as well as the moderating role of perceived budget fairness on the relationship between employees’ participation in the budgetary process and their work performance, especially in the context of an emerging market – Vietnam. Overall, this study contributes to the management and accounting literature with insights concerning a more complex process explaining employees’ work performance and triggered by their budgetary participation.

Introduction: Urinary incontinence (UI) affects an estimated 51% of US adult women. This is a comparative effectiveness study of practice-based interventions to improve UI care quality and reduce health disparities. Objectives: Compare the effectiveness of two nonsurgical UI interventions on care quality, shared decision making (SDM), patient-centered outcomes and knowledge. Determine if interventions reduce care disparities and knowledge gaps in underserved Spanish-speaking Latinas. Methods: Sixty primary care physicians (PCPs) from 3 health systems will be randomized into two arms. In Arm 1,patients are co-managed by urology advanced practice provider (APP) and PCP. APP provides UI care, education, and self-management by telemedicine. In Arm 2, patients are co-managed by PCP and urologist. Urologist electronically reviews referral for appropriate primary UI care and provide recommendations if indicated. In both arms, PCPs receive academic detailing and electronic clinical decision support. Shared decision making, patient-reported UI outcomes and knowledge will be assessed using validated questionnaires. Will compare the care quality by site, provider characteristics (sex and years in practice), and racial/ethnic patient groups. Results: Study funding began in October 2022. 181 primary care clinics are eligible for participation. Recruitment began April 2023. Preliminary analysis found 21.1% of women who screened positive for UI discussed UI with PCP. EHR clinical decision support tools are implemented to prompt PCPs to discuss UI patients who screen positive. Conclusions: Successful intervention(s) may lead to wide-scale implementation of effective, cost-saving, quality improvement methods to improve patient satisfaction and streamline UI care.

Background Artificial intelligence (AI) is a rapidly advancing field that is beginning to enter the practice of medicine. Primary care is a cornerstone of medicine and deals with challenges such as physician shortage and burnout which impact patient care. AI and its application via digital health is increasingly presented as a possible solution. However, there is a scarcity of research focusing on primary care physician (PCP) attitudes toward AI. This study examines PCP views on AI in primary care. We explore its potential impact on topics pertinent to primary care such as the doctor-patient relationship and clinical workflow. By doing so, we aim to inform primary care stakeholders to encourage successful, equitable uptake of future AI tools. Our study is the first to our knowledge to explore PCP attitudes using specific primary care AI use cases rather than discussing AI in medicine in general terms. Methods From June to August 2023, we conducted a survey among 47 primary care physicians affiliated with a large academic health system in Southern California. The survey quantified attitudes toward AI in general as well as concerning two specific AI use cases. Additionally, we conducted interviews with 15 survey respondents. Results Our findings suggest that PCPs have largely positive views of AI. However, attitudes often hinged on the context of adoption. While some concerns reported by PCPs regarding AI in primary care focused on technology (accuracy, safety, bias), many focused on people-and-process factors (workflow, equity, reimbursement, doctor-patient relationship). Conclusion Our study offers nuanced insights into PCP attitudes towards AI in primary care and highlights the need for primary care stakeholder alignment on key issues raised by PCPs. AI initiatives that fail to address both the technological and people-and-process concerns raised by PCPs may struggle to make an impact.

The intricate interplay between biochemical and physical cues dictates pluripotent stem cell (PSC) differentiation to form various tissues. While biochemical modulation has been extensively studied, the role of biophysical microenvironments in early lineage commitment remains elusive. Here, we introduce a novel 3D cell culture system combining electrospun nanofibers with microfabricated polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) patterns. This system enables the controlled formation of semispherical human induced pluripotent stem cell (hiPSC) colonies, facilitating the investigation of local mechanical stem cell niches on mechano-responsive signaling and lineage specification. Our system unveiled spatially organized RhoA activity coupled with actin-myosin cable formation, suggesting mechano-dependent hiPSC behaviors. Nodal network analysis of RNA-seq data revealed RhoA downstream regulation of YAP signaling, DNA histone modifications, and patterned germ layer specification. Notably, altering colony morphology through controlled PDMS microwell shaping effectively modulated the spatial distribution of mechano-sensitive mediators and subsequent differentiation. This study provides a cell culture platform to decipher the role of biophysical cues in early embryogenesis, offering valuable insights for material design in tissue engineering and regenerative medicine applications.

BACKGROUND: Recent clinical trials established the benefit of dual antiplatelet therapy with aspirin and clopidogrel (DAPT-AC) in early-presenting patients with minor ischemic stroke. However, the impact of these trials over time on the use and outcomes of DAPT-AC among the patients with nonminor or late-presenting stroke who do not meet the eligibility criteria of these trials has not been delineated. METHODS AND RESULTS: In a multicenter stroke registry, this study examined yearly changes from April 2008 to August 2022 in DAPT-AC use for stroke patients ineligible for CHANCE/POINT (Clopidogrel in High-Risk Patients with Acute Nondisabling Cerebrovascular Events/Platelet-Oriented Inhibition in New TIA and Minor Ischemic Stroke) clinical trials due to National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale >4 or late arrival beyond 24 hours of onset. A total of 32 118 patients (age, 68.1±13.1 years; male, 58.5%) with National Institutes of Health Stroke Scale of 4 (interquartile range, 1-7) were analyzed. In 2008, DAPT-AC was used in 33.0%, other antiplatelets in 62.7%, and no antiplatelet in 4.3%. OBJECTIVE: To study the association between the Sarnat exam (SE) performed before and after therapeutic hypothermia (TH) and outcomes at 2 years in infants with moderate or severe hypoxic-ischaemic encephalopathy (HIE). DESIGN: Secondary analysis of the High-dose Erythropoietin for Asphyxia and EncephaLopathy Trial. Adjusted ORs (aORs) for death or neurodevelopmental impairment (NDI) based on SE severity category and change in category were constructed, adjusting for sedation at time of exam. Absolute SE Score and its change were compared for association with risk for death or NDI using locally estimated scatterplot smoothing curves. SETTING: Randomised, double-blinded, placebo-controlled multicentre trial including 17 centres across the USA. PATIENTS: 479/500 enrolled neonates who had both a qualifying SE (qSE) before TH and a SE after rewarming (rSE). INTERVENTIONS: Standardised SE was used across sites before and after TH. All providers underwent standardised SE training. MAIN OUTCOME MEASURES: Primary outcome was defined as the composite outcome of death or any NDI at 22-36 months. RESULTS: Both qSE and rSE were associated with the primary outcome. Notably, an aOR for primary outcome of 6.2 (95% CI 3.1 to 12.6) and 50.3 (95% CI 13.3 to 190) was seen in those with moderate and severe encephalopathy on rSE, respectively. Persistent or worsened severity on rSE was associated with higher odds for primary outcome compared with those who improved, even when qSE was severe. CONCLUSION: Both rSE and change between qSE and rSE were strongly associated with the odds of death/NDI at 22-36 months in infants with moderate or severe HIE.

BackgroundElectronic health record (EHR)-based patient messages can contribute to burnout. Messages with a negative tone are particularly challenging to address. In this perspective, we describe our initial evaluation of large language model (LLM)-generated responses to negative EHR patient messages and contend that using LLMs to generate initial drafts may be feasible, although refinement will be needed.MethodsA retrospective sample (n = 50) of negative patient messages was extracted from a health system EHR, de-identified, and inputted into an LLM (ChatGPT). Qualitative analyses were conducted to compare LLM responses to actual care team responses.ResultsSome LLM-generated draft responses varied from human responses in relational connection, informational content, and recommendations for next steps. Occasionally, the LLM draft responses could have potentially escalated emotionally charged conversations.ConclusionFurther work is needed to optimize the use of LLMs for responding to negative patient messages in the EHR.
