In the wake of the racial reckoning created by the Black Lives Matter movement in 2020, several states have enacted multiple anti-equity educational measures. Florida is central in this discussion as it leads the US policymaking with 23 bills introduced and passed into law. Further, Florida's particular constellation of educational reforms has already begun to transform the state's K-20 educational landscape and shifted the national narrative toward a broader regressive ideology of anti-woke. This brief paper is part of a more extensive critical policy analysis (CPA) (Diem et al. 2014) on anti-woke ideology and educational policy in the US. As such, this critical policy case study focuses on discourses of intersectional justice and systemic inequality in Florida's anti-woke educational policy.

A series of substituted 2-phenacyl-3-phenyl-1H-pyrrole-4-carboxylates were prepared from substituted acetophenones in 6 steps. The final condensations between a chloroenal and an aminoketone were carried out under neutral conditions in parallel to yield the series listed below. Selected pyrrole derivatives proved to be potent hypolipidemic agents lowering serum triglyceride concentrations in CF-1 male mice after 14 days of I.P. administration. One agent orally lowered serum cholesterol in Sprague-Dawley male rats at 2mg/kg/day after 14 days. The agents demonstrated a lowering of mouse serum LDL- cholesterol levels and selected compounds showed an elevation of serum HDL-cholesterol levels. The cholesterol concentrations in the liver were raised while the cholesterol and triglyceride contents of the aorta were significantly lowered by the selected trisubstituted pyrrole.

Lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage remains a common disease, frequently presenting with acute life-threatening symptoms. Although prompt detection and treatment are imperative, it is difficult to diagnose lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage in an accurate and efficient manner. Most available modalities are time consuming. Computed tomographic angiography of the abdomen and pelvis, on the other hand, has the unique capability of rapidly detecting whether life-threatening hemorrhage is occurring and accurately localizing it, thus facilitating definitive treatment. We present a case in which computed tomographic angiography was invaluable in the detection and subsequent empirical transarterial embolization of a lower gastrointestinal hemorrhage and offer evidence as to why it should be a first-line tool in the management of these patients.

In most contemporary life forms, the confinement of cell membranes provides localized concentration and protection for biomolecules, leading to efficient biochemical reactions. Similarly, confinement may have also played an important role for prebiotic compartmentalization in early life evolution when the cell membrane had not yet formed. It remains an open question how biochemical reactions developed without the confinement of cell membranes. Here we mimic the confinement function of cells by creating a hydrogel made from geological clay minerals, which provides an efficient confinement environment for biomolecules. We also show that nucleic acids were concentrated in the clay hydrogel and were protected against nuclease, and that transcription and translation reactions were consistently enhanced. Taken together, our results support the importance of localized concentration and protection of biomolecules in early life evolution, and also implicate a clay hydrogel environment for biochemical reactions during early life evolution.

Phytochelatin synthase (PC synthase) is the enzyme that catalyzes the production of phytochelatins, peptides of the structure (γ-Glu-Cys)n -Gly, where n = 2-11, from the sulfhydryl-containing tripeptide glutathione, in response to elevated metal exposure. Biochemical utilization of Cd in the marine diatom Thalassiosira weissfloggi, as well as unusually high ratios of PC to Cd in some Thalassiosira species including T. pseudonana Hasle et Heimdal, motivated the characterization of T. pseudonana PC synthase 1 (TpPCS1). This enzyme is the product of one of three genes in the T. pseudonana genome predicted to encode for a PC synthase based on its homology to canonical PC synthases previously examined. TpPCS1 was cloned, expressed in Escherichia coli and purified under both aerobic and anaerobic conditions. TpPCS1 exhibits several characteristics that set it distinctly apart from the well-studied PC synthase, Arabidopsis thaliana PCS1 (AtPCS1). It is extremely sensitive to oxidation, which suppresses activity, and it is readily inhibited by the addition of Cd in the absence of thiolate ligands. TpPCS1 also has significantly greater affinity for one of its key substrates, the bis-glutathionato-Cd complex. TpPCS1 kinetics is best described by a ternary complex model, as opposed to the ping-pong model used to describe AtPCS1 kinetics. The findings indicate that although the function of TpPCS1 is synonymous to that of AtPCS1, its divergent biochemistry suggests adaptation of this enzyme to the distinct trace metal chemistry of the marine environment and the unique physiological needs of T. pseudonana., (© 2012 Phycological Society of America.)

Objective: To assess the extent to which clinical and nonclinical variables have been used by mental health professionals in Manitoba to determine fitness to stand trial. Researchers at a forensic setting in another province have suggested that demographic variables account for as much of the variance in predicting the outcome of these assessments as clinical variables., Method: These variables were assessed by the examination of 100 fitness assessments conducted at Winnipeg's Forensic Services unit during a 2-year period., Results: Contrary to findings reported in Ontario, the variance in fitness evaluations in Manitoba was primarily accounted for by clinical rather than demographic variables., Conclusion: Since Manitoba's forensic clinicians were using standardized criteria that were very similar to 1992 Criminal Code revisions of fitness, the findings attest to the usefulness of these criteria.
