1. Thermoelectric signature of quantum critical phase in a doped spin-liquid candidate

Abstract: Abstract Quantum spin liquid is a nontrivial magnetic state of longstanding interest, in which spins are strongly correlated and entangled but do not order; further intriguing is its doped version, which possibly hosts strange metal and unconventional superconductivity. A promising candidate of the doped spin liquid is a triangular-lattice organic conductor, κ-(BEDT-TTF)4Hg2.89Br8, recently found to hold metallicity, spin-liquid-like magnetism, and BEC-like superconductivity. The nature of the metallic state with the spin-liquid behaviour is awaiting to be further clarified. Here, we report the thermoelectric signature that mobile holes in the spin liquid background are in a quantum critical state and it pertains to the BEC-like superconductivity. The Seebeck coefficient divided by temperature, S/T, is enhanced on cooling with logarithmic divergence indicative of quantum criticality. Furthermore, the logarithmic enhancement is correlated with the superconducting transition temperature under pressure variation, and the temperature and magnetic field profile of S/T upon the superconducting transition change with pressure in a consistent way with the previously suggested BEC-BCS crossover. The present results reveal that the quantum criticality in a doped spin liquid emerges in a phase, not at a point, and is involved in the unconventional BEC-like nature.

Abstract: Abstract In this paper, we present the first high‐speed video observation of a cloud‐to‐ground lightning flash and its associated downward‐directed Terrestrial Gamma‐ray Flash (TGF). The optical emission of the event was observed by a high‐speed video camera running at 40,000 frames per second in conjunction with the Telescope Array Surface Detector, Lightning Mapping Array, interferometer, electric‐field fast antenna, and the National Lightning Detection Network. The cloud‐to‐ground flash associated with the observed TGF was formed by a fast downward leader followed by a very intense return stroke peak current of −154 kA. The TGF occurred while the downward leader was below cloud base, and even when it was halfway in its propagation to ground. The suite of gamma‐ray and lightning instruments, timing resolution, and source proximity offer us detailed information and therefore a unique look at the TGF phenomena.

Abstract: Results are presented for the measurement of large-scale anisotropies in the arrival directions of ultra–high-energy cosmic rays detected at the Pierre Auger Observatory during 19 yr of operation, prior to AugerPrime, the upgrade of the observatory. The 3D dipole amplitude and direction are reconstructed above 4 EeV in four energy bins. Besides the established dipolar anisotropy in R.A. above 8 EeV, the Fourier amplitude of the 8–16 EeV energy bin is now also above the 5 σ discovery level. No time variation of the dipole moment above 8 EeV is found, setting an upper limit to the rate of change of such variations of 0.3% yr ^−1 at the 95% confidence level. Additionally, the results for the angular power spectrum are shown, demonstrating no other statistically significant multipoles. The results for the equatorial dipole component down to 0.03 EeV are presented, using for the first time a data set obtained with a trigger that has been optimized for lower energies. Finally, model predictions are discussed and compared with observations, based on two source emission scenarios obtained in the combined fit of spectrum and composition above 0.6 EeV.

Abstract: Abstract We present a measurement of the cosmic-ray spectrum above 100 PeV using the part of the surface detector of the Pierre Auger Observatory that has a spacing of 750 m. An inflection of the spectrum is observed, confirming the presence of the so-called second-knee feature. The spectrum is then combined with that of the 1500 m array to produce a single measurement of the flux, linking this spectral feature with the three additional breaks at the highest energies. The combined spectrum, with an energy scale set calorimetrically via fluorescence telescopes and using a single detector type, results in the most statistically and systematically precise measurement of spectral breaks yet obtained. These measurements are critical for furthering our understanding of the highest energy cosmic rays.

Abstract: Abstract The hybrid design of the Pierre Auger Observatory allows for the measurement of the properties of extensive air showers initiated by ultra-high energy cosmic rays with unprecedented precision. By using an array of prototype underground muon detectors, we have performed the first direct measurement, by the Auger Collaboration, of the muon content of air showers between $$2\times 10^{17}$$ 2×1017 and $$2\times 10^{18}$$ 2×1018 eV. We have studied the energy evolution of the attenuation-corrected muon density, and compared it to predictions from air shower simulations. The observed densities are found to be larger than those predicted by models. We quantify this discrepancy by combining the measurements from the muon detector with those from the Auger fluorescence detector at $$10^{{17.5}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1017.5eV and $$10^{{18}}\, {\mathrm{eV}} $$ 1018eV . We find that, for the models to explain the data, an increase in the muon density of $$38\%$$ 38% $$\pm 4\% (12\%)$$ ±4%(12%) $$\pm {}^{21\%}_{18\%}$$ ±18%21% for EPOS-LHC, and of $$50\% (53\%)$$ 50%(53%) $$\pm 4\% (13\%)$$ ±4%(13%) $$\pm {}^{23\%}_{20\%}$$ ±20%23% for QGSJetII-04, is respectively needed.

Abstract: A search for time-directional coincidences of ultra-high-energy (UHE) photons above 10 EeV with gravitational wave (GW) events from the LIGO/Virgo runs O1 to O3 is conducted with the Pierre Auger Observatory. Due to the distinctive properties of photon interactions and to the background expected from hadronic showers, a subset of the most interesting GW events is selected based on their localization quality and distance. Time periods of 1000 s around and 1 day after the GW events are analyzed. No coincidences are observed. Upper limits on the UHE photon fluence from a GW event are derived that are typically at ∼7 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1000 s) and ∼35 MeV cm ^−2 (time period 1 day). Due to the proximity of the binary neutron star merger GW170817, the energy of the source transferred into UHE photons above 40 EeV is constrained to be less than 20% of its total GW energy. These are the first limits on UHE photons from GW sources.

Abstract: A catalog containing details of the highest-energy cosmic rays recorded through the detection of extensive air showers at the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented with the aim of opening the data to detailed examination. Descriptions of the 100 showers created by the highest-energy particles recorded between 2004 January 1 and 2020 December 31 are given for cosmic rays that have energies in the range 78–166 EeV. Details are also given on a further nine very energetic events that have been used in the calibration procedure adopted to determine the energy of each primary. A sky plot of the arrival directions of the most energetic particles is shown. No interpretations of the data are offered.

Abstract: Abstract Elves are a class of transient luminous events, with a radial extent typically greater than 250 km, that occur in the lower ionosphere above strong electrical storms. We report the observation of 1,598 elves, from 2014 to 2016, recorded with unprecedented time resolution (100 ns) using the fluorescence detector (FD) of the Pierre Auger Cosmic‐Ray Observatory. The Auger Observatory is located in the Mendoza province of Argentina with a viewing footprint for elve observations of 3·106 km 2, reaching areas above the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans, as well as the Córdoba region, which is known for severe convective thunderstorms. Primarily designed for ultrahigh energy cosmic‐ray observations, the Auger FD turns out to be very sensitive to the ultraviolet emission in elves. The detector features modified Schmidt optics with large apertures resulting in a field of view that spans the horizon, and year‐round operation on dark nights with low moonlight background, when the local weather is favorable. The measured light profiles of 18% of the elve events have more than one peak, compatible with intracloud activity. Within the 3‐year sample, 72% of the elves correlate with the far‐field radiation measurements of the World Wide Lightning Location Network. The Auger Observatory plans to continue operations until at least 2025, including elve observations and analysis. To the best of our knowledge, this observatory is the only facility on Earth that measures elves with year‐round operation and full horizon coverage.

12. Curie-temperature dependence of microwave heating behavior of NixZn(1−x)Fe2O4 powders

Abstract: Recently, the microwave well absorber goes noticed as a heating aid to establish a microwave chemical plant. We determine the mechanism of the rapid and selective heating of magnetic conductive particles by electric and magnetic microwave fields. Furthermore, we investigate the dependencies of the Curie temperature of NixZn(1−x)Fe2O4 powders on their heating behaviors by employing a conventional microwave oven. In these experiments, the maximum microwave heating temperature increases with the Curie temperature of ferrites. To investigate the dependence of the microwave magnetic field strength on the heating behavior, we focus a pure magnetic field separated from 2.45 GHz microwaves onto these ferrites, and the magnetic field enhanced by a single-mode cavity is used to heat the ferrites at higher Curie temperatures. Our results indicate that there are two types of energy interactions between the ferrites and the microwave magnetic field with two different mechanisms: magnetic loss and eddy current heating. Furthermore, the heating performance of the ferrites as microwave absorbers is evaluated in comparison with SiC, which is a typical microwave absorber used in microwave processing. We believe that our findings can contribute to further advancements in microwave chemistry and related fields.

13. Mott-Driven BEC-BCS Crossover in a Doped Spin Liquid Candidate κ-(BEDT-TTF)_{4}Hg_{2.89}Br_{8}

Abstract: The pairing of interacting fermions leading to superfluidity has two limiting regimes: the Bardeen-Cooper-Schrieffer (BCS) scheme for weakly interacting degenerate fermions and the Bose-Einstein condensation (BEC) of bosonic pairs of strongly interacting fermions. While the superconductivity that emerges in most metallic systems is the BCS-like electron pairing, strongly correlated electrons with poor Fermi liquidity can condense into the unconventional BEC-like pairs. Quantum spin liquids harbor extraordinary spin correlation free from order, and the superconductivity that possibly emerges by carrier doping of the spin liquids is expected to have a peculiar pairing nature. The present study experimentally explores the nature of the pairing condensate in a doped spin liquid candidate material and under varying pressure, which changes the electron-electron Coulombic interactions across the Mott critical value in the system. The transport measurements reveal that the superconductivity at low pressures is a BEC-like condensate from a non-Fermi liquid and crosses over to a BCS-like condensate from a Fermi liquid at high pressures. The Nernst-effect measurements distinctively illustrate the two regimes of the pairing in terms of its robustness to the magnetic field. The present Mott tuning of the BEC-BCS crossover can be compared to the Feshbach tuning of the BEC-BCS crossover of fermionic cold atoms.

Abstract: Abstract Background Recent preclinical and phase I studies have reported that rebamipide decreased the severity of chemoradiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with oral cancer. This placebo-controlled randomized phase II study assessed the clinical benefit of rebamipide in reducing the incidence of severe chemoradiotherapy-induced oral mucositis in patients with head and neck cancer (HNC). Methods Patients aged 20–75 years with HNC who were scheduled to receive chemoradiotherapy were enrolled. Patients were randomized to receive rebamipide 2% liquid, rebamipide 4% liquid, or placebo. The primary endpoint was the incidence of grade ≥ 3 oral mucositis determined by clinical examination and assessed by central review according to the Common Terminology Criteria of Adverse Events version 3.0. Secondary endpoints were the time to onset of grade ≥ 3 oral mucositis and the incidence of functional impairment (grade ≥ 3) based on the evaluation by the Oral Mucositis Evaluation Committee. Results From April 2014 to August 2015, 97 patients with HNC were enrolled, of whom 94 received treatment. The incidence of grade ≥ 3 oral mucositis was 29% and 25% in the rebamipide 2% and 4% groups, respectively, compared with 39% in the placebo group. The proportion of patients who did not develop grade ≥ 3 oral mucositis by day 50 of treatment was 57.9% in the placebo group, whereas the proportion was 68.0% in the rebamipide 2% group and 71.3% in the rebamipide 4% group. The incidences of adverse events potentially related to the study drug were 16%, 26%, and 13% in the placebo, rebamipide 2%, and rebamipide 4% groups, respectively. There was no significant difference in treatment compliance among the groups. Conclusions The present phase II study suggests that mouth washing with rebamipide may be effective and safe for patients with HNC receiving chemoradiotherapy, and 4% liquid is the optimal dose of rebamipide. Abstract: An overview of the multi-messenger capabilities of the Pierre Auger Observatory is presented. The techniques and performance of searching for Ultra-High Energy neutrinos, photons and neutrons are described. Some of the most relevant results are reviewed, such as stringent upper bounds that were placed to a flux of diffuse cosmogenic neutrinos and photons, bounds placed on neutrinos emitted from compact binary mergers that were detected by LIGO and Virgo during their first and second observing runs, as well as searches for high energy photons and neutrons from the Galactic center that constrain the properties of the putative Galactic PeVatron, observed by the H.E.S.S. collaboration. The observation of directional correlations between ultra-high energy cosmic rays and either high energy astrophysical neutrinos or specific source populations, weighted by their electromagnetic radiation, are also discussed. They constitute additional multi-messenger approaches aimed at identifying the sources of high energy cosmic rays.

Abstract: We report a first measurement for ultrahigh energy cosmic rays of the correlation between the depth of shower maximum and the signal in the water Cherenkov stations of air-showers registered simultaneously by the fluorescence and the surface detectors of the Pierre Auger Observatory. Such a correlation measurement is a unique feature of a hybrid air-shower observatory with sensitivity to both the electromagnetic and muonic components. It allows an accurate determination of the spread of primary masses in the cosmic-ray flux. Up till now, constraints on the spread of primary masses have been dominated by systematic uncertainties. The present correlation measurement is not affected by systematics in the measurement of the depth of shower maximum or the signal in the water Cherenkov stations. The analysis relies on general characteristics of air showers and is thus robust also with respect to uncertainties in hadronic event generators. The observed correlation in the energy range around the ‘ankle’ at lg⁡(E/eV)=18.5–19.0 differs significantly from expectations for pure primary cosmic-ray compositions. A light composition made up of proton and helium only is equally inconsistent with observations. The data are explained well by a mixed composition including nuclei with mass A>4. Scenarios such as the proton dip model, with almost pure compositions, are thus disfavored as the sole explanation of the ultrahigh-energy cosmic-ray flux at Earth. Abstract: Performance improvement of a broadcast-and-select (B&S) optical switch based on an electro-absorption modulator (EAM)-gate array is presented. The introduction of a novel spot-size converter (SSC) with an easy fabrication process reduced the optical coupling loss between the switch's waveguide array and input/output fibers and enhanced the optical-coupling tolerance for misalignment as the SSC properly expands the waveguide's mode field as well. In addition, the electrical crosstalk, which causes undesirable changes in the output power from different switch ports, was suppressed by the simple addition of a grounded electrode that covers the surface of passive waveguides, instead of employing a complicated regrowth process, as is usually done for electrical isolation between EAMs. A 4 x 4 B&S optical switch module has been fabricated with these improvements and has successfully exhibited low insertion loss (

Abstract: We report a low-loss InP wire waveguide monolithically integrated with an SiOx waveguide on an Si platform. By means of directly bonding InP to SiO 2, we realized a submicrometer-scale InP wire waveguide with high optical confinement. In addition, a several-micrometer-scale SiOx waveguide with a refractive index difference of ~3% is integrated on the InP wire waveguide via a spot-size converter (SSC). Experimental results indicate that the InP wire waveguide has a propagation loss of 5 dB/cm and that the InP- SiOx SSC has an insertion loss of 0.7 dB and a reflectance of less than -50 dB. By using the SSC, a low coupling loss of 0.9 dB is achieved between the optical fiber and the InP wire waveguide.

Abstract: Studies of the Laurencia complex based on phylogenetic and DNA barcoding analyses revealed a new species, Laurencia longiramea Cassano, G.N. Santos, J.M.C. Nunes, M.C. Oliveira & M.T. Fujii sp. nov., on the Brazilian coast. The rbcL phylogenetic analysis resolved L. longiramea as sister to Laurencia species from the North Atlantic (L. pyramidalis, L. viridis and L. obtusa) and the Caribbean Sea and Gulf of Mexico (L. intricata), with a divergence of 2.4%–3.7%. Using the DNA barcode COI-5P, L. longiramea was closest to L. pacifica from the United States, with a divergence of 4.2%. The new species has the typical features of the genus Laurencia and is characterised by: sparse branching, axes smaller than 1 mm diameter, often long branchlets, lenticular thickenings always present and abundant, and absence of cortical cells projected near branch apices. Morphologically, L. longiramea is similar to Laurencia filiformis. However, an rbcL sequence of L. filiformis from the type locality (Western Australia) confirmed that they are distinct species, with 4.3% divergence. Examination of Laurencia clavata from Brazil, deposited in the University of São Paulo (SPF) herbarium, were misidentified and corresponded to the new species, L. longiramea. In addition, the rbcL and COI-5P sequences of L. clavata from the type locality (Australia) did not join with L. longiramea. Laurencia clavata formed a well-supported clade with the two species of Coronaphycus. Priority supported the recognition of Corynecladia over Coronaphycus, requiring the new combinations Corynecladia elata (C.Agardh) comb. nov. and Corynecladia nova (Metti) comb. nov. Abstract: Species diversity within the genus Osmundea in the Macaronesian region was explored by conducting a comprehensive sampling in the Azores, the Canary, and the Madeira archipelagos. Toward identification, all specimens were first observed alive to verify the absence of corps en cerise, a diagnostic character for the genus and morphometric data were measured (thallus length and width, first-order branches length and width, branchlets length and width, cortical cell length and width in surface view, cortical cell length and width in transverse section). Specimens were sequenced for COI-5P (39 specimens) and three species delimitation methods (Generalized Mixed Yule Coalescent, Automatic Barcode Gap Discovery method, and Poisson Tree Processes) were used to assess the threshold between infra- and interspecific relationships. Subsequently, one or several sequences of plastid-encoded large subunit of RuBisCO (21 specimens) per delimited species were generated to assess the phylogenetic relationships among Macaronesian Osmundea. Moreover, for each delineated species, vegetative and reproductive anatomy was thoroughly documented and, when possible, specimens were either assigned to existing taxa or described as novel species. This integrative approach has provided data for (i) the presence of O. oederi, O. pinnatifida, and O. truncata in Macaronesia; (ii) the proposal of two novel species, O. prudhommevanreinei sp. nov. and O. silvae sp. nov.; and (iii) evidence of an additional species referred as ' Osmundea sp.1,' which is a sister taxon of O. hybrida. 24. Liparid and macrourid fishes of the hadal zone: in situ observations of activity and feeding behaviour.

Abstract: Using baited camera landers, the first images of living fishes were recorded in the hadal zone (6000–11000m) in the Pacific Ocean. The widespread abyssal macrourid Coryphaenoides yaquinae was observed at a new depth record of approximately 7000m in the Japan Trench. Two endemic species of liparid were observed at similar depths: Pseudoliparis amblystomopsis in the Japan Trench and Notoliparis kermadecensis in the Kermadec Trench. From these observations, we have documented swimming and feeding behaviour of these species and derived the first estimates of hadal fish abundance. The liparids intercepted bait within 100–200min but were observed to preferentially feed on scavenging amphipods. Notoliparis kermadecensis act as top predators in the hadal food web, exhibiting up to nine suction-feeding events per minute. Both species showed distinctive swimming gaits: P. amblystomopsis (mean length 22.5cm) displayed a mean tail-beat frequency of 0.47Hz and mean caudal:pectoral frequency ratio of 0.76, whereas N. kermadecensis (mean length 31.5cm) displayed respective values of 1.04 and 2.08Hz. 25. Identification of the female-determining region of the W chromosome in Bombyx mori.

Abstract: Abstract The W chromosome of the silkworm Bombyx mori is devoid of functional genes, except for the putative female-determining gene (Fem). To localize Fem, we investigated the presence of W-specific DNA markers on strains in which an autosomal fragment containing dominant marker genes was attached to the W chromosome. We produced new W-chromosomal fragments from the existing Zebra-W strain (T(W;3)Ze chromosome) by X-irradiation, and then carried out deletion mapping of these and sex-limited yellow cocoon strains (T(W;2)Y-Chu, -Abe and -Ban types) from different Japanese stock centers. Of 12 RAPD markers identified in the normal W chromosomes of most silkworm strains in Japan, the newly irradiated W(B-YL-YS)Ze chromosome contained three, the T(W;2)Y-Chu chromosome contained six, and the T(W;2)Y-Abe and -Ban chromosomes contained only one (W-Rikishi). To investigate the ability of the reduced W-chromosome translocation fragments to form heterochromatin bodies, which are found in nuclei of normal adult female sucking stomachs, we examined cells of the normal type p50 strain and the T(W;2)Y-Chu and -Abe strains. A single sex heterochromatin body was found in nuclei of p50 females, whereas we detected only small sex heterochromatin bodies in the T(W;2)Y-Chu strain and no sex heterochromatin body in the T(W;2)Y-Abe strain. Since adult females of all strains were normal and fertile, we conclude that only extremely limited region, containing the W-Rikishi RAPD sequence of the W chromosome, is required to determine femaleness. Abstract: Abstract In deletion-mapping of W-specific RAPD (W-RAPD) markers and putative female determinant gene (Fem), we used X-ray irradiation to break the translocation-carrying W chromosome (W Ze ). We succeeded in obtaining a fragment of the W Ze chromosome designated as Ze W, having 3 of 12 W-RAPD markers (W-Bonsai, W-Yukemuri-S, W-Yukemuri-L). Inheritance of the Ze W fragment by males indicates that it does not include the Fem gene. On the basis of these results, we determined the relative positions of W-Yukemuri-S and W-Yukemuri-L, and we narrowed down the region where Fem gene is located. In addition to the Ze W fragment, the Z chromosome was also broken into a large fragment (Z1) having the + sch (1-21.5) and a small fragment (Z2) having the + od (1-49.6). Moreover, a new chromosomal fragment (Ze WZ2) was generated by a fusion event between the Ze W and the Z2 fragments. We analyzed the genetic behavior of the Z1 fragment and the Ze WZ2 fragment during male (Z/Z1 Ze WZ2) and female (Z1 Ze WZ2/W) meiosis using phenotypic markers. It was observed that the Z1 fragment and the Z or the W chromosomes separate without fail. On the other hand, non-disjunction between the Ze WZ2 fragment and the Z chromosome and also between the Ze WZ2 fragment and the W chromosome occurred. Furthermore, the females (2A: Z/Ze WZ2/W) and males (2A: Z/Z1) resulting from non-disjunction between the Ze WZ2 fragment and the W chromosome had phenotypic defects: namely, females exhibited abnormal oogenesis and males were flapless due to abnormal indirect flight muscle structure. Abstract: Bombyx mori is a female-heterogametic organism (female, ZW; male, ZZ) that appears to have a putative feminizing gene (Fem) on the W chromosome. The paternally transmitted mutant W chromosome, Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem, derived from the translocation-carrying W chromosome (pSa + pW + od), is inert as femaleness determinant. Moreover, this Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome has been thought to have a female-killing factor because no female larvae having the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome are produced. Initially, to investigate whether the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome contains any region of the W chromosome or not, we analyzed the presence or absence of 12 W-specific RAPD markers. The Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome contained 3 of 12 W-specific RAPD markers. These results strongly indicate that the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome contains the region of the W chromosome. Moreover, by using phenotypic and molecular markers, we confirmed that the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome is connected with a partially deleted Z chromosome and that this fused chromosome behaves as a Z chromosome during male meiosis. Furthermore, we demonstrated that the ZZW-type triploid female having the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome is viable. Therefore, we concluded that the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome does not have a female-killing factor but that partial deletion of the Z chromosome causes the death of the ZW-type diploid female having the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome. Additionally, our results of detailed genetic analyses strongly indicate that the female-killing chromosome composed of the Df(pSa + pW + od)Fem chromosome and deleted Z chromosome was generated by translocation between the Z chromosome and the translocation-carrying W chromosome, pSa + pW + od. Abstract: NO2 concentration profiles, which are important in studies of atmospheric chemistry and urban pollution, were measured by a differential absorption lidar (DIAL) based on a pair of Nd:YAG pumped dye lasers. In the experiments, 448.1 nm and 446.8 nm were used for “on” and “off” wavelengths, respectively. NO2 concentration profiles of 0–40 ppb were obtained for altitudes between 900 and 2250 m with a 150 m range resolution. Null error, which was estimated by deviation of the null profile from zero, was <2 ppb. The statistical error, systematic error from aerosols, and error due to uncertainty of absorption cross section were <3.35 ppb, <4.44 ppb and <1 ppb, respectively. The total error was about 6.0 ppb. Abstract: Phenylketonuria (PKU) is an autosomal recessive genetic disease caused by the defects in the phenylalanine hydroxylase (PAH) gene. Individuals homozygous for defective PAH alleles show elevated levels of systemic phenylalanine and should be under strict dietary control to reduce the risk of neuronal damage associated with high levels of plasma phenylalanine. Researchers predict that plant phenylalanine ammonia-lyase (PAL), which converts phenylalanine to nontoxic t-cinnamic acid, will be an effective therapeutic enzyme for the treatment of PKU. The problems of this potential enzyme therapy have been the low stability in the circulation and the antigenicity of the plant enzyme. Recombinant PAL originated from parsley (Petroselinum crispum) chemically conjugated with activated PEG2 [2,4-bis(O-methoxypolyethyleneglycol)-6-chloro-s-triazine] showed greatly enhanced stability in the circulation and was effective in reducing the plasma concentration of phenylalanine in the circulation of mice. Medical history and biologic variables were noninvasivelyrecorded, including blood pressure, arterial oxygen saturation, three-lead electrocardiogram,and end-tidal carbon dioxide. Abstract: Background: Interleukin-18 (IL-18) is a proinflammatory cytokine that can induce interferon-γ (IFN-γ), and it plays an important role in T-helper 1 responses. Among idiopathic interstitial pneumonia (IIP), nonspecific interstitial pneumonia (NSIP) has an increased number of lymphocytes in bronchoalveolar lavage (BAL) fluid compared with usual interstitial pneumonia (UIP). However, the difference in their pathogenesis is unclear. Objective: The present study aims to investigate the roles of IL-18 in patients with idiopathic UIP and idiopathic NSIP. Methods: We measured the serum and BAL fluid (BALF) levels of IL-18 and IFN-γ in 22 patients with IIP (12 with UIP, 10 with NSIP) and 9 healthy volunteers. Results: Lymphocyte proportions in BALF were significantly higher in NSIP than in UIP and healthy subjects. No significant differences were observed in the serum IL-18 levels of all subjects, while the BALF levels of IL-18 in patients with NSIP were significantly higher than in patients with UIP (p < 0.005) and in healthy subjects (p < 0.005). Among all subjects, the levels of IL-18 in BALF correlated significantly with those in serum and the lymphocyte proportions in BALF. The serum IFN-γ levels of all subjects were below sensitivity, but there was significant reverse correlation between the levels of IFN-γ and the lymphocyte proportions in BALF. Conclusion: The lymphocytosis in BALF of patients with idiopathic NSIP and a part of idiopathic UIP might be associated with the high levels of IL-18.Copyright © 2005 S. Abstract: Distribution of silicified cells in the leaf blades of Pleioblastus chino was investigated using a light microscope and a scanning electron microscope equipped with an energy dispersive X-ray microanalyser. The most dense accumulation of silica was found in epidermal tissues. Little silica was deposited in vascular bundles and chlorenchyma, while more was deposited in bundle sheath and fusoid cells. In the epidermis, silica density and frequency of silicified cells differed depending on cell type, although silica deposition was observed in most cell types. Heavy deposition was found in silica cells, bulliform cells, micro hairs and prickle hairs. Silica cells were the cell type most frequently silicified (96.9–99.7%) in the adaxial and abaxial epidermis. Abstract: The state of Espírito Santo has one of the greatest diversities of macroalgae along the Brazilian coast. Beach-cast seaweeds are a frequent phenomenon and exhibit great diversity. This study assessed stranded macroalgae’s composition and reproductive status to evaluate their potential for sustainable use by the local community. Monthly collections were carried out from March to November 2022, covering the rainy and dry seasons, on five beaches in Espírito Santo: three in the north and two in the south. At each beach, two 50 m transects were set up parallel to the coastline over the stranded algae patches, one near the wave-breaking zone during low tide and another around high tide, and three 1 × 1 m quadrants were randomly selected in each transect. All material within each quadrant was collected, resulting in six samples per beach. We identified 81 taxa, including 54 Rhodophyta, 16 Ulvophyceae and 11 Phaeophyceae. The taxon composition was relatively consistent across the studied regions, with the rainy season exhibiting the greatest species richness. Seventeen of the identified taxa had reproductive structures, although only four consistently presented these structures. Our results suggest that removing stranded macroalgae does not significantly impact their role as propagule sources.

Abstract: This paper aims to develop a phase-locked multicolor confocal micro-particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique to investigate the flow mechanism of microdroplet formation at a micro T-shaped micro junction. The object to be measured is a three-dimensional (3D) periodic multiphase flow with random disturbances, and this method is a solution for the 3D flow measurement of this complicated phenomenon. The phase-locking technique is needed to reconstruct the 3D flow field from the two-dimensional (2D) confocal micro-PIV measurement data. We successfully obtained each temporal phase of the periodic phenomenon noninvasively by detecting the passage of a droplet from the transmitted light of an optical proximity sensor. Then, the phase-locking technique also enabled us to select the same conditions of formation frequency, size, and translational velocity of droplets to minimize instability in the droplet formation phenomenon. The multicolor system can measure the dynamic behavior of each phase of a multiphase flow separately and simultaneously. Abstract: We report on a measurement of the cosmic ray energy spectrum by the Telescope Array Low-Energy Extension (TALE) air fluorescence detector (FD). The TALE air FD is also sensitive to the Cherenkov light produced by shower particles. Low-energy cosmic rays, in the PeV energy range, are detectable by TALE as Cherenkov events. Using these events, we measure the energy spectrum from a low energy of ∼2 PeV to an energy greater than 100 PeV. Above 100 PeV, TALE can detect cosmic rays using air fluorescence. This allows for the extension of the measurement to energies greater than a few EeV. In this paper, we describe the detector, explain the technique, and present results from a measurement of the spectrum using ∼1000 hr of observation. The observed spectrum shows a clear steepening near 1017.1 eV, along with an ankle-like structure at 1016.2 eV. These features present important constraints on the origin of galactic cosmic rays and on propagation models. Abstract: Evidence for an intermediate-scale energy spectrum anisotropy has been found in the arrival directions of ultra-high energy cosmic rays for energies greater than 1019.2 eV in the northern hemisphere using 7 years of Telescope Array surface detector data. A relative energy distribution test is done comparing events inside oversampled spherical caps of equal exposure, to those outside, using the Poisson likelihood ratio. The center of maximum significance is at 9h16m, 45°, and has a deficit of events with energies 1019.2 ≤ E < 1019.75 eV and an excess for E ≥ 1019.75 eV. Abstract: The Telescope Array (TA) observatory utilizes fluorescence detectors and surface detectors (SDs) to observe air showers produced by ultra high energy cosmic rays in Earth’s atmosphere. Cosmic-ray events observed in this way are termed hybrid data. The depth of air shower maximum is related to the mass of the primary particle that generates the shower. This paper reports on shower maxima data collected over 8.5 yr using the Black Rock Mesa and Long Ridge fluorescence detectors in conjunction with the array of SDs. We compare the means and standard deviations of the observed distributions with Monte Carlo distributions of unmixed protons, helium, nitrogen, and iron, all generated using the QGSJet II-04 hadronic model. We also perform an unbinned maximum likelihood test of the observed data, which is subjected to variable systematic shifting of the data distributions to allow us to test the full distributions, and compare them to the Monte Carlo to see which elements are not compatible with the observed data. For all energy bins, QGSJet II-04 protons are found to be compatible with TA hybrid data at the 95% confidence level after some systematic shifting of the data. Three other QGSJet II-04 elements are found to be compatible using the same test procedure in an energy range limited to the highest energies where data statistics are sparse. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract: Since 2011, the Caribbean and Gulf of Mexico coasts have been receiving massive influxes of holopelagic sargasso algae composed of Sargassum natans and Sargassum fluitans. This phenomenon has been causing several negative local impacts, such as ecological disturbances and socioeconomic and health concerns of communities in impacted areas. This work aimed to assess the status of scientific knowledge related to pelagic sargasso, including trends, emphases, and gaps. A literature review was conducted on publications and reports from 2011 to 2022, of which 251 articles were collected based on an inclusion–exclusion criteria. Aspects of each article were quantified, including location, description of sargasso, the type of study, and research theme. A region-wide research emphasis on ecology, remote sensing, and valorization was observed. Areas first affected by the inundations composed a higher percentage of sargasso studies than other locations, and the distribution of studies varied among subregions. Topics requiring further investigation include sargasso’s growth and mortality rates and drivers, taxonomic and physiologic differences among morphotypes, and real-time forecasting resolution at local scales both on and offshore. This research emphasized efforts from the scientific community on research and mitigation initiatives.

Abstract: We report on the search for steady point-like sources of neutral particles around 1018 eV between 2008 and 2013 May with the scintillator SD of the Telescope Array experiment. We found overall no significant point-like excess above 0.5 EeV in the northern sky. Subsequently, we also searched for coincidence with the Fermi bright Galactic sources. No significant coincidence was found within the statistical uncertainty. Hence, we set an upper limit on the neutron flux that corresponds to an averaged flux of 0.07 km−2 yr−1 for EeV in the northern sky at the 95% confidence level. This is the most stringent flux upper limit in a northern sky survey assuming point-like sources. The upper limit at the 95% confidence level on the neutron flux from Cygnus X-3 is also set to 0.2 km−2 yr−1 for EeV. This is an order of magnitude lower than previous flux measurements.
