The state requires leaders who own intelligence and characters. Indonesia as a developing country is clearly very interested in finding out how to integrate the character values into the learning process in the classroom. Japan becomes a destination because it can provide character education to its students. Research Team of Universitas Negeri Semarang (UNNES) held collaborative research with Professor Takuya Baba, Ph.D. from Hiroshima University, Japan as the Partner Lecturer. The purpose of this qualitative research was to get input on how elementary school teachers in Japan integrate the character values in learning, especially in math lessons. Its main activities, conducting class observations, interviews, Focus Group Discussion, and triangulation with guidance from the Partner Lecturer. The research site was Miyauchi Elementary School of Hiroshima and at IDEC of Hiroshima University. As a result, the UNNES research team obtained ways to integrate the values of characters in learning, especially in math lessons. The result of this research is expected to be applied at elementary schools in Semarang, Indonesia.

This paper proposes a variable-structured robust controller whose structure is continuously changed by fuzzy logic such that the controller makes the system respond quickly if the error e is large or its rate e is large and vice versa in order to obtain a robust controller that is insensitive to both the plant noise and the observation noise. Then it is applied practically to speed control for an induction servomotor. Experiments show that the proposed controller is superior to both a sliding mode controller and a PID controller. The paper includes the stability analysis of the overall system and the design procedure by using Lyapunov's method.

This article has been preceded by a research activity in Guangxi China and collaborated with Prof. Guo Yuanbing, Ph.D, Deputy Director of Guangxi Normal University. The research method used a qualitative approach. The research activities included field observations to explore forms of ethnomathematics. The problem: How was the role of ethnomathematics as an encouragement of the growth of students' nationalism? The objectives were: (1) Finding the role of ethnomathematics in encouraging the growth of students' nationalism. (2) Finding the objects of ethnomathematics that can encourage the growth of students' nationalism. Data analysis includes: data reduction, data display, data interpretation, and conclusion/verification. The results were as follows: (1) The learning by applying of ethnomathematics approach can play a role in encouraging the growth of students' nationalism. (2) To optimize the role of ethnomathematics as an encouragement of the growth of the spirit of nationalism, the teacher needs to choose the objects of ethnomathematics based on the work of the nation's own. Character values need to be given to students from elementary school to university. These character values can be integrated into the learning process for all fields of study, including Mathematics. The problem: How do you teach a mathematics teacher or lecturer in the Mathematics Education Study Program to integrate character values in the learning process? This study involved partner lecturer, namely Prof. Guo Yuanbing from Guangxi Normal University. As a result, tips were obtained if a lecturer wanted to integrate character values in the learning process. The tips: (1) Lecturers provide exemplary attitudes, speaks, and actions that reflect noble character. (2) Lecturers provide information to students about the character values developed by the university. (3) Lecturers insert the character values on mathematical tasks. (4) Lecturers are strongly advised to evaluate the growth of character values in students. Suggestion: Universities should provide regulations on the need for lecturers to evaluate the emergence of student character values. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
