Dissolved inorganic carbon has been hypothesized to stimulate microbial chemoautotrophic activity as a biological sink in the carbon cycle of deep subsurface environments. Here, we tested this hypothesis using quantitative DNA stable isotope probing of metagenome-assembled genomes (MAGs) at multiple 13C-labeled bicarbonate concentrations in hydrothermal fluids from a 750-m deep subsurface aquifer in the Biga Peninsula (Turkey). The diversity of microbial populations assimilating 13C-labeled bicarbonate was significantly different at higher bicarbonate concentrations, and could be linked to four separate carbon-fixation pathways encoded within 13C-labeled MAGs. Microbial populations encoding the Calvin–Benson–Bassham cycle had the highest contribution to carbon fixation across all bicarbonate concentrations tested, spanning 1–10 mM. However, out of all the active carbon-fixation pathways detected, MAGs affiliated with the phylum Aquificae encoding the reverse tricarboxylic acid (rTCA) pathway were the only microbial populations that exhibited an increased 13C-bicarbonate assimilation under increasing bicarbonate concentrations. Our study provides the first experimental data supporting predictions that increased bicarbonate concentrations may promote chemoautotrophy via the rTCA cycle and its biological sink for deep subsurface inorganic carbon. Propanil is an uncommon cause of poisoning, and the incidence of it in India is unknown. It is a low to medium toxicity agent; however, severe poisoning can lead to death, especially in areas with limited medical facilities. Hereby, the authors present a case of 15-year-old girl who presented to Emergency Department after 72 hours of ingesting an unknown quantity of propanil. She was noted to have peripheral cyanosis, laboured breathing, and a room air saturation of 62%, for which she was intubated and ventilated. Methaemoglobinemia was suspected in the child, which is considered a complication of propanil poisoning, and methylene blue was administered within six hours of admission. Exchange transfusion was performed via a femoral central line catheter when there was no improvement with methylene blue. Sulfhaemoglobinemia was also considered as a differential diagnosis. On day 4 of the hospital stay, her saturation improved to 80%. She experienced complications of haemolysis, which were managed conservatively. She improved clinically and was extubated on day 5. Her room air saturation was 93% on day 9, and she was discharged. She had a follow-up appointment in the outpatient clinic after two weeks, where her saturation on room air was recorded as 97%, and her methaemoglobin levels were 8.7% in the postexchange transfusion sample. Propanil has the potential to cause severe, life-threatening clinical symptoms. Exchange transfusions can be lifesaving in situations of severe poisoning. Early transfer of patients to tertiary care Institutions should be considered as peripheral hospitals may lack intensive care facilities and exchange transfusion capabilities.

Abstract Background Diabetes education in Turkey is provided by diabetes nurse educators in almost all healthcare organizations. However, the education is not standardized in terms of learning content, duration, and methods. This multi-center study was performed to assess the self-care behaviors and glycemic control following education provided to the patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus by diabetes nurse educators. Methods This was a descriptive and cross-sectional study and included 1535 patients admitted to 28 public hospitals for the treatment of type 2 diabetes mellitus. The education was assessed by using a Patient Identification Form and Self-care Scale. Results The proportion of individuals who received diabetes education within the last year was 78.5%, with 46.7% of them having received it once. Of the patients, 84.8% reported that they received diabetes education individually. It was found that the proportion of individuals who received education about oral antidiabetics (78.5%) and glucose testing at home (78.5%) was higher than the proportion of individuals who received education about exercise (58.8%) and foot care (61.6%). The status of diabetes education, education intervals, and the correlation of the education method with self-care and glycemic control was evaluated. The modelling of electricity production and demand requires highly specific and comprehensive meteorological data. One challenge is the high temporal frequency as electricity production and demand modelling typically is done with hourly data. On the other side the European electricity market is highly connected, so that a pure country-based modelling is not expedient and at least the whole European Union (EU) area has to be considered. Additionally, the spatial resolution of the data set must be able to represent the thermal conditions, which requires high spatial resolution at least in mountainous regions. All these requirements lead to huge data amounts for historic observations and even more for climate change projections for the whole 21 st century. With the continued digitization of the energy sector, the problem of sunken scholarly data investments and forgone opportunities of harvesting existing data is exacerbating. It compounds the problem that the reproduction of knowledge is incomplete, impeding the transparency of science-based targets for the choices made in the energy transition. The FAIR data guiding principles are widely acknowledged as a way forward, but their operationalization is yet to be agreed upon within different research domains. We comprehensively test FAIR data practices in the low carbon energy research domain. 80 databases representative for data needed to support the low carbon energy transition are screened. Automated and manual tests are used to document the state-of-the art and provide insights on bottlenecks from the human and machine perspectives. We report a rare occurrence of an intraparenchymal plasmocytoma. On the past history of a severe head injury twenty years ago and the presence of a porencephalic area on the computerized tomography scan and magnetic resonance imaging we suspected a possible trauma-tumor relation. Accuracy of the histological diagnosis of plasmocytoma was confirmed. The treatment was a surgical excision only, and after a 4.5 years follow-up period, no clinical nor radiographic recurrence was noted.
