We present a novel code, named SIESTA (Statistical matchIng between rEal and Synthetic sTellar popuLations), designed for performing statistical isochrone fitting to colour–magnitude diagrams (CMDs) of single stellar populations by leveraging comparisons between the observed stellar distribution and predictions from synthetic populations, simulated on top of a grid of isochrones. These synthetic populations encompass determinant factors such as the cluster's initial mass function (IMF), the presence of non-resolved binaries, as well as the expected photometric errors, and observational completeness (or the observed luminosity function). Employing Markov Chain Monte Carlo within a Bayesian framework, SIESTA allows for the determination of a cluster's age, metallicity, distance, colour excess, and binary fraction (with masses exceeding a certain ratio). In this study, we rigorously benchmark the SIESTA code utilizing synthetic populations and evaluate its performance against observations from the VISCACHA Survey in the Small Magellanic Cloud, focusing on five star clusters: Lindsay 114, NGC 152, Lindsay 91, Lindsay 113, and NGC 121. These clusters were chosen for their diverse age range, spanning from 0.04 to 10 Gyr. Our findings demonstrate the capability of the SIESTA code to accurately represent the observed CMDs of these clusters. Furthermore, we compare the results obtained with SIESTA to previous characterizations of these clusters, highlighting the consistency between the derived metallicity and spectroscopic determinations from various sources. Photometric completeness affects the photometry of stars in crowded regions such as the cores of star clusters. Some analysis such as deriving the structural parameters of star clusters using radial density profile is heavily affected by photometric completeness and the classical techniques to map this completeness in a given field are very expensive computationally. In most surveys, for example, the large quantity of data makes it impracticable to estimate the completeness using the traditional method for the whole sample due to time and computational requirements. In this work, we present a new method that is significantly faster and results in similar completeness curves and maps as the traditional approach, providing a great first-step completeness estimator for a large sample of data. Using the completeness corrected data for each cluster we built radial density profiles improving significantly the inner portion of the profile; we also fitted the King model to them, determining the clusters' structural parameters based on a more realistic cluster profile. In this preliminary analysis, we derived structural parameters for nine selected clusters covering a range of core radii (5–40 arcesc) and tidal radii (40–180 arcesc) and discuss how the photometric completeness affects the determination of these parameters when we count stars to trace the radial profile of a star cluster. Dwarf galaxies are known to exhibit an unusual richness in numbers of globular clusters (GCs), property quantified by the specific frequency (S N), which is high for dwarf and giant elliptical galaxies, but with a minimum for intermediate-mass galaxies. In this work we study the role that GC evolution has in setting this trend, for which we use N -body simulations to evolve GCs in dwarf galaxies and quantify their disruption efficiency. We selected five individual dwarf galaxies from a high-resolution cosmological simulation, which includes GC formation and follow-up of their paths inside the host galaxy. Then, the tidal history of each GC is coupled to nbody6++gpu to produce N -body models that account for both, the interaction of GCs with their galactic environment and their internal dynamics. This results in a GC mass-loss parametrization to estimate dissolution times and mass-loss rates after a Hubble time. GC evolution is sensitive to the particular orbital histories within each galaxy, but the overall result is that the amount of mass that GC systems lose scales with the mass (and density) of the host galaxy, i.e. the GC mass-loss efficiency is lowest in low-mass dwarfs. After a 12 Gyr evolution all simulated GC systems retain an important fraction of their initial mass (up to 25 per cent), in agreement with the high GC to field star ratios observed in some dwarfs, and supports the scenario in which GC disruption mechanisms play an important role in shaping the GC specific frequency in dwarf galaxies. The presence of nitrogen-enriched stars in globular clusters provides key evidence for multiple stellar populations (MPs), as has been demonstrated with globular cluster spectroscopic data towards the bulge, disk, and halo. In this work, we employ the VVV Infrared Astrometric Catalogue (VIRAC) and the DR16 SDSS-IV release of the APOGEE survey to provide the first detailed spectroscopic study of the bulge globular cluster UKS 1. Based on these data, a sample of six selected cluster members was studied. We find the mean metallicity of UKS 1 to be [Fe/H] = −0.98 ± 0.11, considerably more metal-poor than previously reported, and a negligible metallicity scatter, typical of that observed by APOGEE in other Galactic globular clusters. In addition, we find a mean radial velocity of 66.1 ± 12.9 km s−1, which is in good agreement with literature values, within 1σ. By selecting stars in the VIRAC catalogue towards UKS 1, we also measure a mean proper motion of (μαcos(δ), μδ) = (−2.77 ± 0.23, −2.43 ± 0.16) mas yr−1. We find strong evidence for the presence of MPs in UKS 1, since four out of the six giants analysed in this work have strong enrichment in nitrogen ([N/Fe] ≳ +0.95) accompanied by lower carbon abundances ([C/Fe] ≲ −0.2). Overall, the light- (C, N), α- (O, Mg, Si, Ca, Ti), Fe-peak (Fe, Ni), Odd-Z (Al, K), and the s-process (Ce, Nd, Yb) elemental abundances of our member candidates are consistent with those observed in globular clusters at similar metallicity. Furthermore, the overall star-to-star abundance scatter of elements exhibiting the multiple-population phenomenon in UKS 1 is typical of that found in other global clusters (GCs), and larger than the typical errors of some [X/Fe] abundances. Results from statistical isochrone fits in the VVV colour-magnitude diagrams indicate an age of 13.10 −1.29+0.93 − 1.29 + 0.93 $ ^{+0.93}_{-1.29} $ Gyr, suggesting that UKS 1 is a fossil relic in the Galactic bulge. Globular clusters (GCs) are the most ancient stellar systems in the Milky Way. Therefore, they play a key role in the understanding of the early chemical and dynamical evolution of our Galaxy. Around 40 per cent of them are placed within ∼4 kpc from the Galactic centre. In that region, all Galactic components overlap, making their disentanglement a challenging task. With Gaia Data Release 2, we have accurate absolute proper motions for the entire sample of known GCs that have been associated with the bulge/bar region. Combining them with distances, from RR Lyrae when available, as well as radial velocities from spectroscopy, we can perform an orbital analysis of the sample, employing a steady Galactic potential with a bar. We applied a clustering algorithm to the orbital parameters apogalactic distance and the maximum vertical excursion from the plane, in order to identify the clusters that have high probability to belong to the bulge/bar, thick disc, inner halo, or outer halo component. We found that |$\sim 30{{\ \rm per\ cent}}$| of the clusters classified as bulge GCs based on their location are just passing by the inner Galaxy, they appear to belong to the inner halo or thick disc component, instead. The VISCACHA (VIsible Soar photometry of star Clusters in tApii and Coxi HuguA†) Survey is an ongoing project based on deep and spatially resolved photometric observations of Magellanic Cloud star clusters, collected using the SOuthern Astrophysical Research (SOAR) telescope together with the SOAR Adaptive Module Imager. So far we have used >300h of telescope time to observe ∼150 star clusters, mostly with low mass (M < 104 M ⊙) on the outskirts of the LMC and SMC. With this high-quality data set, we homogeneously determine physical properties using deep colour-magnitude diagrams (ages, metallicities, reddening, distances, mass, luminosity and mass functions) and structural parameters (radial density profiles, sizes) for these clusters which are used as a proxy to investigate the interplay between the Magellanic Clouds and their evolution. We present the VISCACHA survey and its initial results, based on our first two papers. The project's long term goals and expected legacy to the community are also addressed. Ages, metallicities, reddening, distances, present-day masses, mass function slopes, and structural parameters for these clusters are derived and used as a proxy to investigate the interplay between the environment in the Magellanic Clouds and the evolution of such systems. In this first paper we present the VISCACHA Survey and its initial results, concerning the SMC clusters AM3, K37, HW20, and NGC 796 and the LMC ones KMHK228, OHSC3, SL576, SL61, and SL897, chosen to compose a representative subset of our cluster sample.
