We employ polymer integral equation theory to study a simplified model of semiflexible polymerized ionic liquids (PolyILs) that interact via hard core repulsions and short range screened Coulomb interactions. The multi-scale structure in real and Fourier space of PolyILs (ions chosen to mimic Li, Na, K, Br, PF6, and TFSI) are determined as a function of melt density, Coulomb interaction strength, and ion size. Comparisons with a homopolymer melt, a neutral polymer–solvent-like athermal mixture, and an atomic ionic liquid are carried out to elucidate the distinct manner that ions mediate changes of polymer packing, the role of excluded volume effects, and the influence of chain connectivity, respectively. The effect of Coulomb strength depends in a rich manner on ion size and density, reflecting the interplay of steric packing, ion adsorption, and charge layering. Ion-mediated bridging of monomers is found, which intensifies for larger ions. Intermediate range charge layering correlations are characterized by a many-body screening length that grows with PolyIL density, cooling, and Coulomb strength, in disagreement with Debye–Hückel theory, but in accord with experiments. Qualitative differences in the collective structure, including an ion-size-dependent bifurcation of the polymer structure factor peak and pair correlation function, are predicted. The monomer cage order parameter increases significantly, but its collective ion counterpart decreases, as ions become smaller. Such behaviors allow one to categorize PolyILs into two broad classes of small and large ions. Dynamical implications of the predicted structural results are qualitatively discussed. Using tip-enhanced photoluminescence (TEPL), we investigate micron-size monolayer MoS2 flakes. In a sequence of studies, we apply various voltages between the Ag-coated nano-tip and the MoS2 flakes and observe an intriguing result. During the TEPL measurement, we observe that the photoluminescence spectrum is blue shifted and the overall signal intensity is increased. We attribute this behavior to plasmon-induced electron injection into MoS2. Additionally, when the tip is negatively biased with respect to the sample during the TEPL measurement, the nonuniform TEPL images of MoS2 monolayer flakes containing defects are gradually changed to be uniform that reach saturation. We verify that this saturation state in TEPL can last over half a year.

Cross-linked polymers with covalent adaptable networks (CANs) can be reprocessed under external stimuli owing to the exchangeability of dynamic covalent bonds. Optimization of reprocessing conditions is critical since increasing the reprocessing temperature costs more energy and even deteriorates the materials, while reducing the reprocessing temperature via molecular design usually narrows the service temperature range. Exploiting CO2 gas as an external trigger for lowering the reprocessing barrier shows great promise in low sample contamination and environmental friendliness. Herein, we develop a type of CANs incorporated with ionic clusters that achieve CO2-facilitated recyclability without sacrificing performance. The presence of CO2 can facilitate the rearrangement of ionic clusters, thus promoting the exchange of dynamic bonds. The effective stress relaxation and network rearrangement enable the system with rapid recycling under CO2 while retaining excellent mechanical performance in working conditions. This work opens avenues to design recyclable polymer materials with tunable dynamics and responsive recyclability. Cross-linked polymers with covalent adaptable networks are reprocessed under external stimuli at high temperatures which might deteriorate their performance. Dr. Deborah Birx, the White House Coronavirus Task Force coordinator, told NBC News on “Meet the Press” that “[T]he U.S. needs a ‘breakthrough’ in coronavirus testing to help screen Americans and get a more accurate picture of the virus’ spread.” We have been involved with biopathogen detection since the 2001 anthrax attacks and were the first to detect anthrax in real-time. A variation on the laser spectroscopic techniques we developed for the rapid detection of anthrax can be applied to detect the Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome-Corona Virus-2 (SARS-CoV-2 virus). In addition to detecting a single virus, this technique allows us to read its surface protein structure. In particular, we have been conducting research based on a variety of quantum optical approaches aimed at improving our ability to detect Corona Virus Disease-2019 (COVID-19) viral infection. Indeed, the detection of a small concentration of antibodies, after an infection has passed, is a challenging problem. Likewise, the early detection of disease, even before a detectible antibody population has been established, is very important. Our team is researching both aspects of this problem. The paper is written to stimulate the interest of both physical and biological scientists in this important problem. It is thus written as a combination of tutorial (review) and future work (preview). We join Prof. Federico Capasso and Editor Dennis Couwenberg in expressing our appreciation to all those working so heroically on all aspects of the COVID-19 problem. And we thank Drs. Capasso and Couwenberg for their invitation to write this paper.

A recently proposed wide-angle velocity selector (WAVES) device for choosing the velocity of detected neutrons after they have been scattered by the sample paves the way for inverted geometry neutron spectrometers with continuously adjustable final neutron wavelength. BWAVES broadband inverted geometry spectrometer proposed for the Second Target Station at the Spallation Neutron Source at Oak Ridge National Laboratory is designed using WAVES to simultaneously probe dynamic processes spanning 4.5 decades in time (energy transfer). This makes BWAVES a uniquely flexible instrument which can be viewed as either a quasielasitc neutron scattering (QENS) spectrometer with a practically unlimited (overlapping with the vibrational excitations) range of energy transfers, or a broadband inelastic vibrational neutron spectrometer with QENS capabilities, including a range of accessible momentum transfer (Q) and a sufficiently high energy resolution at the elastic line. The new capabilities offered by BWAVES will expand the application of neutron scattering in ways not possible with existing neutron spectrometers.

Quantum nano-biophotonics as the science of nanoscale light-matter interactions in biological systems requires developing new spectroscopic tools for addressing the challenges of detecting and disentangling weak congested optical signals. Nanoscale bio-imaging addresses the challenge of the detection of weak resonant signals from a few target biomolecules in the presence of the nonresonant background from many undesired molecules. In addition, the imaging must be performed rapidly to capture the dynamics of biological processes in living cells and tissues. Label-free non-invasive spectroscopic techniques are required to minimize the external perturbation effects on biological systems. Various approaches were developed to satisfy these requirements by increasing the selectivity and sensitivity of biomolecular detection. Coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (CARS) and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectroscopies provide many orders of magnitude enhancement of chemically specific Raman signals. Femtosecond adaptive spectroscopic techniques for CARS (FAST CARS) were developed to suppress the nonresonant background and optimize the efficiency of the coherent optical signals. This perspective focuses on the application of these techniques to nanoscale bio-imaging, discussing their advantages and limitations as well as the promising opportunities and challenges of the combined coherence and surface enhancements in surface-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (SECARS) and tip-enhanced coherent anti-Stokes Raman scattering (TECARS) and the corresponding surface-enhanced FAST CARS techniques. Laser pulse shaping of near-field excitations plays an important role in achieving these goals and increasing the signal enhancement.

Despite intensive research on sustainable elastomers, achieving elastic vitrimers with significantly improved mechanical properties and recyclability remains a scientific challenge. Herein, inspired by the classical elasticity theory, we present a design principle for ultra‐tough and highly recyclable elastic vitrimers with a defined network constructed by chemically crosslinking the pre‐synthesized disulfide‐containing polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) chains with tetra‐arm polyethylene glycol (PEG). The defined network is achieved by the reduced dangling short chains and the relatively uniform molecular weight of network strands. Such elastic vitrimers with the defined network, i.e. PDMS‐disulfide‐D, exhibit significantly improved mechanical performance than random analogous, previously reported PDMS vitrimers, and even commercial silicone‐based thermosets. Moreover, unlike the vitrimers with random network that show obvious loss in mechanical properties after recycling, those with the defined network enable excellent thermal recyclability. The PDMS‐disulfide‐D also deliver comparable electrochemical signals if utilized as substrates for electromyography sensors after the recycling. The multiple relaxation processes are revealed via a unique physical approach. Additively manufactured flexible and high‐performance piezoelectric devices are highly desirable for sensing and energy harvesting of 3D conformal structures. Herein, the study reports a significantly enhanced piezoelectricity in polyvinylidene fluoride (PVDF) achieved through the in situ dipole alignment of PVDF within PVDF‐2D molybdenum disulfide (2D MoS2) composite by 3D printing. The shear stress‐induced dipole poling of PVDF and 2D MoS2 alignment are harnessed during 3D printing to boost piezoelectricity without requiring a post‐poling process. The results show a remarkable, more than the eight‐fold increment in the piezoelectric coefficient (d33) for 3D printed PVDF‐8wt.% MoS2 composite over cast neat PVDF. The underlying mechanism of piezoelectric property enhancement is attributed to the increased volume fraction of β phase in PVDF, filler fraction, heterogeneous strain distribution around PVDF‐MoS2 interfaces, and strain transfer to the nanofillers as confirmed by microstructural analysis and finite element simulation. These results provide a promising route to design and fabricate high‐performance 3D piezoelectric devices via 3D printing for next‐generation sensors and mechanical–electronic conformal devices. Proton transport is critical for many technologies and for a variety of biochemical and biophysical processes. Proton transfer between molecules (via structural diffusion) is considered to be an efficient mechanism in highly proton conducting materials. Yet, the mechanism and what controls energy barriers for this process remain poorly understood. It was shown that mixing phosphoric acid (PA) with lidocaine leads to an increase in proton conductivity at the same liquid viscosity. However, recent simulations of mixtures of PA with various bases, including lidocaine, suggested no decrease in the proton transfer energy barrier. To elucidate this surprising result, we have performed broadband dielectric spectroscopy to verify the predictions of the simulations for mixtures of PA with several bases. Our results reveal that adding bases to PA increases the energy barriers for proton transfer, and the observed increase in proton conductivity at a similar viscosity appears to be related to the increase in the glass transition temperature (Tg) of the mixture. Moreover, the energy barrier seems to increase with Tg of the mixtures, emphasizing the importance of molecular mobility or interactions in the proton transfer mechanism. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study experimentally the temperature evolution of the thickness of the interfacial layer, Lint(T), between bulk matrices and the surface of nanoparticles in nanocomposites through broadband dielectric spectroscopy. Analyses revealed a power-law dependence between the logarithm of structural relaxation time in the interfacial layer, τint(T), and the Lint(T): ln τ i n t (T) / τ 0 ∝ L i n t β (T) / T , with τ0 ∼ 10−12 s, and β index ∼0.67 at high temperatures and ∼1.7 at temperatures close to the glass transition temperature. In addition, our analysis revealed that the Lint(T) is comparable to the length scale of dynamic heterogeneity estimated from previous nonlinear dielectric measurements and the four-point NMR [ξNMR(T)], with Lint(T) ∼ ξNMR(T). These observations may suggest a direct correlation between the Lint(T) and the size of the cooperatively rearranging regions and have strong implications for understanding the dynamic heterogeneity and cooperativity in supercool liquids and their role in interfacial dynamics.
