Giardiasis and other protozoan infections are major worldwide causes of morbidity and mortality, yet development of new antimicrobial agents with improved efficacy and ability to override increasingly common drug resistance remains a major challenge. Antimicrobial drug development typically proceeds by broad functional screens of large chemical libraries or hypothesis-driven exploration of single microbial targets, but both strategies have challenges that have limited the introduction of new antimicrobials. Here, we describe an alternative drug development strategy that identifies a sufficient but manageable number of promising targets, while reducing the risk of pursuing targets of unproven value. The strategy is based on defining and exploiting the incompletely understood adduction targets of 5-nitroimidazoles, which are proven antimicrobials against a wide range of anaerobic protozoan and bacterial pathogens. Comprehensive adductome analysis by modified click chemistry and multi-dimensional proteomics were applied to the model pathogen Giardia lamblia to identify dozens of adducted protein targets common to both 5'-nitroimidazole-sensitive and -resistant cells. The list was highly enriched for known targets in G. lamblia, including arginine deiminase, α-tubulin, carbamate kinase, and heat shock protein 90, demonstrating the utility of the approach. Importantly, over twenty potential novel drug targets were identified. Inhibitors of two representative new targets, NADP-specific glutamate dehydrogenase and peroxiredoxin, were found to have significant antigiardial activity. Furthermore, all the identified targets remained available in resistant cells, since giardicidal activity of the respective inhibitors was not impacted by resistance to 5'-nitroimidazoles. These results demonstrate that the combined use of click chemistry and proteomics has the potential to reveal alternative drug targets for overcoming antimicrobial drug resistance in protozoan parasites.

To provide culturally-centered care to clients and develop interventions that meet the client's holistic needs, occupational therapists need to consider social and physical environments affecting participation in culturally meaningful occupations. Using a case study, this paper describes the use of the concept of social and environmental determinants of occupation (SEDO) as a necessary strategy to incorporate in clinical practice to determine how SEDO intersect, resulting in occupational justices/injustices that influence access to participation. SEDO are defined as broad (and intersecting) social and environmental factors that increase or limit an individual, community, or population's ability to participate in culturally meaningful occupations of their choice. This information can then be used to develop strategies that more holistically address the SEDO experienced by our clients. The SEDO process refocuses research and practice with more inclusive attention to how these intersecting factors influence the client's ability to access culturally meaningful occupations, provide opportunities for advocacy and empowerment, and better address the needs of our clients. Four ruthenium water oxidation catalysts that bear carboxylate and sulfonate groups in the active site have been synthesized and analyzed for their catalytic activity. The sulfonate‐containing catalysts show higher electrochemical activity in pH 7 phosphate buffer with 4 times larger catalytic current, improved durability with sacrificial oxidant, and increased solubility compared to similar species containing two carboxylate groups. Density functional theory calculations suggest that the sulfonate group provides a more favorable geometry for water nucleophilic attack, which is both the energetically most favorable mechanism calculated and the experimentally predicted mechanism under electrochemical conditions. Further experimental studies have been performed to show that under certain conditions catalysts can perform well electrochemically under pH conditions as low as 1.6 and that various structural components can greatly change solubility and catalytic operation. Carboxylate complexes have risen to prominence in the field of water oxidation catalysis. Here for the first time we use the higher valence of phosphinates [P(V)] relative to that of carboxylates [C(IV)] to increase ligand denticity. We describe the synthesis and characterization of a new dianionic pentadentate ligand, bcpq2− that contains a tridentate 2,2'‐bipyridine‐6‐carboxylato moiety, in addition to a 6'‐phosphinato substituent that acts as fourth ligand and bears a side arm containing a quinoline, the fifth ligand. The new bcpq ligand allows formation of [Ru(II)(bcpq)(L)] (2 a–b, L=picoline or isoquinoline) and in preliminary results, of a Co(II) complex. NMR spectroscopy, X‐ray diffraction, cyclic voltammetry, differential pulse and square wave voltammetry were used to characterize 2 a–b, with 2 b being characterized more extensively as a catalyst. Bulk electrolysis over 15 h at pH 7 was also used, showing that 2 b gave 100±5 % faradaic efficiency and remained completely homogeneous, whereas 1 b was no longer homogeneous; this comparison conclusively shows the advantage of the added denticity in the electrocatalytic context. Replacing carboxylate with P(V) phosphinate with an added arm may be used in other ligand systems to enhance the durability of homogeneous catalysts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The WSU Extension Scholarly Writing Group (ESWG) is a one-year faculty development mentoring program designed to support faculty on tenure or promotion track. The ESWG was created in response to increased expectations for Extension county-based faculty to contribute to the scientific literature within their fields through peer-reviewed scholarship. The ESWG model combined 25 hours of writing instruction with mentoring through accountability partners between department-based and county-based Extension faculty. Survey results from cohort one participants showed a significant increase of scholarly production by county-based faculty and that the program fostered a mutually supportive culture focused on scholarship and professional growth.

The Sanak-Baranof belt includes a series of near-trench plutons that intrude the outboard Chugach-Prince William terrane over ~2200 km along the southern Alaskan margin. We present new petrological, geochronological, and geochemical data for comagmatic microgranitoid enclaves and granitoid rocks from the Crawfish Inlet (ca. 53-47 Ma) and Krestof Island (ca. 52 Ma) plutons on Baranof and Krestof Islands, as well as the Mount Stamy (ca. 51 Ma) and Mount Draper (ca. 54-53 Ma) plutons and associated mafic rocks that intrude the Boundary block at Nunatak Fiord near Yakutat, Alaska, USA. These data suggest that intrusion of the Sanak-Baranof belt plutons is actually a tale of two distinct belts: a western belt with crystallization ages that young systematically from west to east (63-56 Ma) and an eastern belt with crystallization ages ranging from 55 to 47 Ma, but with no clear age progression along the margin. Hf isotope analyses of magmatic zircon from the western Sanak-Baranof belt become increasingly evolved toward the east with εHft = 9.3 ± 0.7 on Sanak Island versus εHft = 5.1 ± 0.5 for the Hive Island pluton in Resurrection Bay. The Hf isotope ratios of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt rocks also vary systematically with age but in reverse, with more evolved ratios in the oldest plutons (εHft = +4.7 ± 0.7) and more primitive ratios in the youngest plutons (εHft = +13.7 ± 0.7). We propose that these findings indicate distinct modes of origin and emplacement histories for the western and eastern segments of the Sanak-Baranof belt, and that the petrogenesis of eastern Sanak-Baranof belt plutons (emplaced subsequent to 57-55 Ma) was associated with an increasing mantle component supplied to the youngest eastern Sanak-Baranof belt magmas. These plutons reveal important information about offshore plate geometries and a dynamic period of plate reorganization ca. 57-55 Ma, but a clearer picture of the tectonic setting that facilitated these Sanak-Baranof belt intrusions cannot be resolved until the magnitude and significance of lateral translation of the Chugach-Prince William terrane are better understood. Objectives: (1) Ascertain the use of the Quad Council Competencies for Community/Public Health Nursing (QCC‐C/PHN) Competencies by community/public health nurses (C/PHNs) during the COVID‐19 pandemic; (2) Inform from a systems‐level the need to sustain the C/PHN workforce; (3) Assess the C/PHN infrastructure for response capacity. Design: Cross‐sectional. Statewide email distribution lists were used for dissemination. Sample: Convenience sample (n = 169) obtained using emailed Qualtrics link with the eligibility criteria of self‐identification as a C/PHN who works in the state of Missouri. Measurements: Demographic questions included employment sector, nursing education level, years of nursing, and C/PHN experience. Two Likert‐type questions and one optional open‐text question were created for the eight domains. Results: One hundred sixty‐nine participants' data were analyzed. One hundred fifty‐four were employed in a local public health agency. Total 63.2% held a bachelor's degree in nursing or higher. The average number of years of nurse experience was 20.84, and C/PHN experience was 9.84. The domain of Communication Skills scored highest and Cultural Competency was the lowest. Three themes emerged from the open‐ended questions including vulnerabilities of the public health system. Conclusion: Understanding the experiences of C/PHNs in Missouri related to the utilization of QCC‐C/PHN competencies informs efforts to strengthen public health infrastructure and target resources to equip Missouri's C/PHNs. Direct experience is a powerful learning and teaching tool. However, when trying to teach students about natural hazards such as earthquakes, direct experience is not the best idea. Depending on location, it might be difficult to help young students understand the impact of natural hazards on their lives. Students will naturally find it challenging to understand something they have never experienced. Technology such as mobile devices, smart boards, laptops, tablets and other types of devices can offer students safe glimpses at the effects of natural hazards on human life and property. The technology enables students to gain experiences with natural hazards without actually having to live through the experience. In this article, the authors present the exploration of earthquakes and other natural hazards using technology. While the authors recognize that not all classrooms will have one-to-one access, these activities presented in this article can also be done as centers with a smaller number of devices needed.

Purpose/Objectives: The Healthy, Hunger-Free Kids Act of 2010 includes pulses as a required component of the school lunch menu standard. Pulses are nutritionally important staple food crops, and include dry beans, dry peas, garbanzo beans, and lentils. This current study examined the short-term effectiveness of a Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM)-focused school garden-based curriculum on student knowledge and preference for dry beans. Methods: In Spring 2014, a STEM-focused school garden curriculum was developed and implemented in six fourth grade classes in Western Washington (n = 120). A student survey was administered pre- and post-education to evaluate changes in dry bean knowledge and preference. A control group (n = 19) of same aged students was established as a comparison. All matched student survey responses were analyzed using difference-in-difference (DID) estimator. Results: Student survey results indicated the education program had a positive impact on the students' knowledge and preference for dry beans. Following the education program, 38% of students knew that beans are an excellent source of dietary fiber, and 17% reported learning that beans are found in pods of the bean plants. Also, 52% of students reported a positive change in their attitudes toward more dry beans being served in the school cafeteria, and 31% reported eating more beans after the educational program. The increase in knowledge and preference suggests participation in school garden-based education may increase student consumption of pulses when offered as part of a school meal. Application to Child Nutrition Professionals: This school garden curriculum is an engaging and effective strategy to meet Next Generation Science Standards for Grade 4 students and can be a useful tool for increasing preference for and consumption of pulses among elementary students.

Pulses are nutritionally important grain legumes that include dry beans, dry peas, garbanzo beans, and lentils. Schools are required to offer one-half cup pulses per week for each student participating in the National School Lunch Program [NSLP]. A survey of school nutrition directors and nutrition specialists was administered in Washington State to assess barriers, opportunities, and methods of serving pulses in cafeterias. Findings showed that to meet NSLP requirements, pulses were served primarily as a vegetable on the salad bar and as an ingredient in chili. Barriers to serving pulses included lack of equipment and time, especially for dry beans. Recipes using pulses and knowledge on how to prepare pulses were identified needs of the respondents. Survey findings will be useful to encourage school nutrition directors to serve a wider variety of pulses which may in turn increase student acceptance and consumption of pulses.

Breast cancer is the second leading cause of cancer death for women, whereas ovarian cancer is the deadliest gynecological cancer. Breast cancer gene 1 (BRCA1) and breast cancer gene 2 (BRCA2) mutations can increase the risk of developing breast and ovarian cancer. Screening can assist in prevention and early detection. This study aimed to increase provider knowledge of BRCA mutations, the use of BRCA screening tools, and genetic referrals. An Institutional Review Board–approved study was implemented for providers for training on BRCA1 and BRCA2 mutations and the importance of screening and referral for those at risk. Measures included provider confidence and knowledge after training as well as number of patient referrals. A standardized webinar was required with further education provided in multiple modalities. The number of BRCA screenings and referrals for genetic screening was monitored through the electronic health record (EHR). Eight providers including five nurse practitioners and three medical doctors participated in the complete project. As a result, 56 patients were BRCA screened, and four referrals were made to receive genetic counseling. Education enhanced knowledge, increased screening tool use, and resulted in improvement in genetic referrals through the EHR. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

OBJECTIVE: The diagnosis of endometriosis, a common gynecologic condition, is characterized by delays of up to 11 years. During this time, women may experience persistent symptoms that affect their quality of life, productivity, and relationships, and the disease may progress. It is therefore a priority to understand the factors that contribute to this delay to help improve the diagnostic pathway. Our objective was to describe the diagnosis barriers of endometriosis from the patient and health care professional perspectives using a qualitative evidence synthesis. DATA SOURCES: We searched MEDLINE, PsycINFO, and Cumulative Index to Nursing and Allied Health Literature using combinations of the synonyms of endometriosis, diagnosis, and qualitative research. The search was restricted to English-language articles from database creation until May 2022. METHODS OF STUDY SELECTION: The initial search yielded 899 articles. Studies were included if they explored the experiences or views of affected women or health care professionals on the diagnosis of endometriosis and used qualitative methods for data collection and data analysis. Risk of bias was assessed with the Critical Appraisal Skills Programme checklist. TABULATION, INTEGRATION, AND RESULTS: Thirty-seven articles were considered for full review, with 13 eligible articles identified for inclusion. Thematic synthesis was used to identify four key themes: 1) individual factors (n56), 2) interpersonal influences (n56), 3) health system factors (n513), and 4) factors specific to endometriosis (n513). These encompassed 12 subthemes that represented barriers to the diagnosis of endometriosis: 1) difficulty establishing pathologic symptoms from normal menstruation and the use of self-care techniques; 2) menstrual stigma and the normalization of menstrual pain; 3) attitudes and lack of training for health care professionals, delayed referrals to specialist services, and poor explanation of oral contraceptive pill use in the diagnostic process; and 4) variability in presenting symptoms, overlap with other conditions, lack of a noninvasive method of diagnosis, and concerns about the value of a diagnosis. CONCLUSION: This review identified barriers to the timely diagnosis of endometriosis from the perspective of affected individuals and health care professionals. Media scholars have long recognized the interaction between the medium that conveys the information and the information that is conveyed. This study examined the relative impact of different low- and high-tech instructional mediums (e.g., flashcards and the iTouch) on the acquisition of general education content-referenced sight words and definitions by students with significant cognitive disabilities. Results indicated that most of the students (three of the four students in the study) preferred high-tech instructional mediums during preference assessments prior to instruction. There was an increase in the tolerance for massed trials for preferred instructional mediums, but it was not meaningful. In spite of these data, there was minimal difference in the rates of skill acquisition or the social validity of the instructional mediums. (Contains 5 tables and 6 figures.)

Diagnosing psychotic disorders in young people is difficult. High rates of co-morbidity may be one reason for this difficulty, but it may also be the case that current diagnostic categories are not the most useful when approaching the care of young people with psychotic symptoms. The Northern Ireland Early Onset Psychosis Study is the first study to investigate psychotic disorders in children and adolescents in this region. Young people presenting with psychotic symptoms with onset before their 18th birthday were prospectively ascertained over a three-year period (2001-2004). Those who provided informed consent were subject to a diagnostic interview using the Kiddie-Schedule for Affective Disorders and Schizophrenia--Present and Lifetime Version. Twenty-five young people have completed the full assessment process to date. Ten young people met criteria for schizophrenia, 11 for affective psychosis, two for schizoaffective disorder and two for schizophreniform disorder. Twenty-one (80%) subjects also fulfilled criteria for at least one other DSM-IV diagnosis. In conclusion, whilst all subjects met criteria for one or other psychotic disorder, co-morbidity was common in this clinical sample. Greater awareness of the difficulties encountered when trying to reach a diagnosis in this age group may help to improve treatment outcomes. (Contains 1 table and 1 figure.)

People with dementia often have significant care needs and it is important that the condition is diagnosed even at an advanced stage. This will enable nurses to predict the person's care needs, develop appropriate care plans and arrange pre-emptive decisions. In 2021-22, a quality improvement project took place in care homes in West Norfolk. This project piloted an abbreviated memory assessment model based on the Diagnosing Advanced Dementia Mandate (DiADeM) tool to increase the rate of diagnoses among residents showing signs and symptoms of cognitive impairment but not formally diagnosed with dementia.
