We combined field mapping, structural and microstructural analyses, stable‐clumped isotope geochemistry, and U‐Pb dating of calcite veins and syn‐tectonic slickenfibres, to assess the regional scale fault‐related fluid flow during the evolution of the External Hellenides fold‐and‐thrust belt. We show that fluid circulation during forebulge uplift was characterized by cold meteoric water‐derived fluids, from which calcite precipitated and sealed bed‐perpendicular joints. Fluid circulation during foreland flexuring and early layer‐parallel shortening was characterized by warm fluids buffered by the carbonate host rock, which circulated through normal faults and bed‐parallel veins. Mixing with meteoric‐derived fluids also occurred at this stage of tectonic evolution. Fluid circulation during the late stage of thrust wedge accretion and post‐orogenic extension at 1.6 ± 1 Ma was characterized by increasing dominance of cold meteoric water circulating in strike‐slip and normal faults. The ingress of meteoric‐derived fluids was controlled by throughgoing fault conduits, while host rock‐buffered fluids were confined in isolated structures such as minor faults and veins. We developed a conceptual model of fault‐related fluid circulation, which invokes a transition from an open fluid system during forebulge uplift, to a semi‐closed fluid system during foreland flexuring and early layer‐parallel shortening, and to an open system during late thrust wedge accretion and post‐orogenic extension. This type of fluid circulation may have impacted fluid migration/leakage, including hydrocarbons, into or outside potential reservoirs in the highly prospective Hellenides‐Albanides fold‐and‐thrust belt, a renovated frontier for hydrocarbon exploration in the Mediterranean area. Bedding-perpendicular joints striking parallel (longitudinal) and perpendicular (transverse) to both the axis of the hosting anticline and the trend of the foredeep-belt system are widely recognized in fold-and-thrust belts. Their occurrence has been commonly attributed to folding-related processes, such as syn-folding outer-arc extension, although they can also be consistent with a pre-folding foredeep-related fracturing stage. Here we report the pre-folding fracture pattern affecting the Pietrasecca Anticline, in the central Apennines (Italy), resolved by a detailed field structural analysis. Field observations, scan-lines and interpretation of virtual outcrops were used to study the intensity, distribution and the orientations of fracture pattern along the anticline. The fracture pattern of the Pietrasecca Anticline consists of longitudinal and transverse joints, oriented approximately perpendicular to bedding, and of a pre-folding longitudinal pressure-solution cleavage set, which is oblique to bedding regardless of the bedding dip. Cross-cutting relationships show that joints predated the development of the pressure-solution cleavage. Furthermore, joint intensity does not relate to the structural position along the anticline. Taken together, these observations suggest that jointing occurred in a foredeep environment before the Pietrasecca Anticline growth. Foreland fold-and-thrust belts (FTBs) record long-lived tectono-sedimentary activity, from passive margin sedimentation, flexuring, and further evolution into wedge accretion ahead of an advancing orogen. Therefore, dating fault activity is fundamental for plate movement reconstruction, resource exploration, and earthquake hazard assessment. Here, we report U–Pb ages of syn-tectonic calcite mineralizations from four thrusts and three tear faults sampled at the regional scale across the Jura fold-and-thrust belt in the northwestern Alpine foreland (eastern France). Three regional tectonic phases are recognized in the middle Eocene–Pliocene interval: (1) pre-orogenic faulting at 48.4±1.5 and 44.7±2.6 Ma associated with the far-field effect of the Alpine or Pyrenean compression, (2) syn-orogenic thrusting at 11.4±1.1 , 10.6±0.5 , 9.7±1.4 , 9.6±0.3 , and 7.5±1.1 Ma associated with the formation of the Jura fold-and-thrust belt with possible in-sequence thrust propagation, and (3) syn-orogenic tear faulting at 10.5±0.4 , 9.1±6.5 , 5.7±4.7 , and at 4.8±1.7 Ma including the reactivation of a pre-orogenic fault at 3.9±2.9 Ma. Previously unknown faulting events at 48.4±1.5 and 44.7±2.6 Ma predate the reported late Eocene age for tectonic activity onset in the Alpine foreland by ∼10 Myr. In addition, we date the previously inferred reactivation of pre-orogenic strike-slip faults as tear faults during Jura imbrication. The U–Pb ages document a minimal time frame for the evolution of the Jura FTB wedge by possible in-sequence thrust imbrication above the low-friction basal decollement consisting of evaporites. We discuss techniques to represent groundwater flow in carbonate aquifers using the three existing modeling approaches: equivalent porous medium, conduit network, and discrete fracture network. Fractures in faulted stratigraphic successions are characterized by dominant sets of sub‐vertical joints. Grid rotation is recommended using the equivalent porous medium to match higher hydraulic conductivity with the dominant orientation of the joints. Modeling carbonate faults with throws greater than approximately 100 m is more challenging. Such faults are characterized by combined conduit‐barrier behavior. The barrier behavior can be modeled using the Horizontal Flow Barrier Package with a low‐permeability vertical barrier inserted to represent the impediment of horizontal flow in faults characterized by sharp drops of the piezometric surface. Cavities can occur parallel to the strike of normal faults generating channels for the groundwater. In this case, flow models need to account for turbulence using a conduit network approach. Channels need to be embedded in an equivalent porous medium due to cavities a few centimeters large, which are present in carbonate aquifers even in areas characterized by low hydraulic gradients. Discrete fracture network modeling enables representation of individual rock discontinuities in three dimensions. This approach is used in non‐heavily karstified aquifers at industrial sites and was recently combined with the equivalent porous medium to simulate diffusivity in the matrix. Following this review, we recommend that the future research combines three practiced modeling approaches: equivalent porous medium, discrete fracture network, and conduit network, in order to capture structural and flow aspects in the modeling of groundwater in carbonate rocks. Previously unknown faulting events at 44.7 ± 2.6 and 48.4 ± 1.5 Ma predate by ~ 10 Ma the accepted late Eocene age for tectonic activity onset in the Alpine foreland. In addition, we dated the previously inferred strike-slip faults re-activation as tear fault. The U-Pb ages demonstrate the long-lived tectonic history at the plate boundary between European and African plates and that the deformation observed in the foreland is directly linked to continental collision. The inner Apennines (Italy) are characterized by scattered outcrops of continent‐derived orogenic metamorphic units exposed along the Tyrrhenian coast from northern to southern Apennines. At least since the 1970s, some peculiar rocks exposed on Zannone Island (central Italy) have been described as the only Paleozoic‐Triassic metamorphic complex linking those exposed in the northern—with those in the southern Apennines. Assessing the protolith nature, thermobaric conditions, and structural features of what is accepted to be the metamorphic unit of Zannone is, therefore, crucial to elucidate the early paleotectonic evolution of the Apennines‐Tyrrhenian orogenic system. To that end, we interpreted seismic reflection profiles offshore Zannone, we carried out mesoscale and microscale structural investigations of representative outcrops on the island, performed X‐ray diffraction analysis, and K‐Ar and U‐Pb geochronology of representative clay gouge and syntectonic carbonate veins. Results show that the metamorphic rocks of Zannone can actually be reinterpreted as belonging to nonmetamorphic siliciclastic turbidites, likely deposited in foredeep settings, and coeval to the Oligocene‐Miocene Macigno Fm. of the northern Apennines. The turbiditic sequence was overthrust by Triassic dolostone in the early Miocene (~22 Ma), weakly deformed at <200°C, and downfaulted by postorogenic extensional faults starting ~7 Ma ago. Hence, Zannone represents a unique geological location in central Italy where to study the innermost (i.e. oldest) thrust sheet of the central‐northern Apennines, thereby shedding new light onto the early tectonics of the Apennines. Based on this evidence, a new evolutionary scheme for the early stage of the Apennines tectonic evolution is proposed. The Mt. Massico ridge (central southern Apennines, Italy) is characterized by a ~150‐m‐thick tectonic mélange located at the base of a Tortonian‐lower Messinian heterogeneous clastic succession consisting of layered sandstones, limestones, marls, and claystones with intercalated mass wasting deposits and isolated olistoliths, which deposited above Meso‐Cenozoic limestones. Geological mapping and structural analyses, integrated with illite‐smectite paleothermal indicators and U‐Pb dating of syntectonic calcite veins and slickenfibers, allowed us to unravel (1) the tectonic evolution of the Mt. Massico ridge and (2) the development of the intrawedge tectonic mélange in the framework of the Apennine accretionary wedge evolution. Results show that after thrusting and folding of Meso‐Cenozoic limestones during late Tortonian times (7.0 ± 1.6 Ma), late Messinian‐early Pliocene out‐of‐sequence thrusting (5.1 ± 3.7 Ma) juxtaposed ~3,300‐m‐thick, imbricate thrust sheets above the Tortonian‐lower Messinian clastic succession. During out‐of‐sequence thrusting, the base of the weak clastic deposits acted as a décollement horizon due to the rheological contrast and mechanical buttress with the underlying competent Mesozoic‐Cenozoic limestones. Heterogeneous deformation along the base of the clastic succession was accommodated by ductile pressure solution of claystones and marls, by brittle stratal disruption and fracturing/veining of competent olistoliths and primary foliation (i.e., sandstones and limestones strata), thus leading to the development of a tectonic mélange. The compressional phase was followed by extensional tectonics after the late Pliocene (minimum age 2.9 ± 0.5 Ma). We conclude that out‐of‐sequence thrusting, buttressing, and intraformational rheological contrast can be fundamental factors for the development of intrawedge tectonic mélange. The reconstruction of the hydrocarbon migration and entrapment history is fundamental for reducing risks and identifying traps and migration pathways during oil exploration and exploitation in fold-and-thrust belts, which host 14% of the world's discovered oil reserves. Within fold-and thrust belts, faults and folds have fundamental roles in controlling hydrocarbon migration, entrapment, and/or leakage. Past studies have mainly focused on the role of syn-orogenic thrusts, tear faults, and folds in controlling hydrocarbon migration and entrapment. On the contrary, little attention has been dedicated to the role of normal faults in hydrocarbon remobilization during the post-orogenic extension. We combine field and subsurface data with geological evidence from the Ripi oil field, central Apennines (Italy), and propose a conceptual model for hydrocarbon remobilization along post-orogenic normal faults and potential entrapment within shallow reservoirs. Results show that post-orogenic normal faults promoted up-dip hydrocarbon remobilization from oil traps generated during fold-and-thrust belt development. Where pre-orogenic deposits are still covered by syn-orogenic deposits, hydrocarbons moved up-dip along post-orogenic normal faults and impregnated high-porosity sandstone lenses, generating discontinuous and heavy oil reservoirs. On the contrary, where syn-orogenic deposits were eroded in response to orogenic uplift, hydrocarbons leaked at the Earth's surface. Results from this study can be applied to reduce risks during hydrocarbon exploration and appraisal in similar tectonic settings, such as Hellenides and Carpathian fold-and-thrust belts, as well as the southern Apennines of Italy, where the Tempa Rossa and Monte Alpi oil fields, two of the largest onshore oil fields in Western Europe, were discovered in the last decades. We combined structural data collected in the field and those obtained from a virtual outcrop model constructed from drone imagery, to perform Discrete Fracture Network (DFN) modelling and to characterize the fracture distribution within the damage zone of the low-displacement (~50 m) carbonate-hosted Pietrasecca Fault (PF) (central Apennines, Italy). Both in the hanging wall and in the footwall damage zones, fractures are vertical and parallel to slightly oblique to the fault strike. Fracture length distributions in the footwall damage zone indicate a high degree of fracture maturity, while in the hanging wall damage zone they indicate a low degree of fracture maturity. Pervasive stylolitization in the hanging wall must have hindered the development of through-going fractures, favoring diffuse fracturing characterized by stylolite-bounded fractures. DFN models suggest that permeabilities are 1–2 orders of magnitude greater in the footwall damage zone than in the hanging wall damage zone. As permeability (10−12 to 10−15 m2) is comparable with those measured in large-displacement (up to 600 m) faults in carbonates, our results show that also damage zones accompanying carbonate faults with ~50 m of displacement could be fracture corridors for efficient fluid flow within subsurface reservoirs. Therefore, we propose that jumps in subsurface permeabilities occurring in many carbonate fractured reservoirs could be associated with to the occurrence of high permeability fracture zones developed within damage zones of low-displacement faults. As the recent advancement in seismic imaging allow the recognition of faults with displacement in the order of a few tens of meters, reservoir geologists and engineers can apply results of this study to better model the subsurface flow pathways near low displacement faults in carbonate reservoirs. Geotagged smartphone photos can be employed to build digital terrain models using structure from motion-multiview stereo (SfM-MVS) photogrammetry. Accelerometer, magnetometer, and gyroscope sensors integrated within consumer-grade smartphones can be used to record the orientation of images, which can be combined with location information provided by inbuilt global navigation satellite system (GNSS) sensors to geo-register the SfM-MVS model. The accuracy of these sensors is, however, highly variable. In this work, we use a 200 m-wide natural rocky cliff as a test case to evaluate the impact of consumer-grade smartphone GNSS sensor accuracy on the registration of SfM-MVS models. We built a high-resolution 3D model of the cliff, using an unmanned aerial vehicle (UAV) for image acquisition and ground control points (GCPs) located using a differential GNSS survey for georeferencing. This 3D model provides the benchmark against which terrestrial SfM-MVS photogrammetry models, built using smartphone images and registered using built-in accelerometer/gyroscope and GNSS sensors, are compared. Results show that satisfactory post-processing registrations of the smartphone models can be attained, requiring: (1) wide acquisition areas (scaling with GNSS error) and (2) the progressive removal of misaligned images, via an iterative process of model building and error estimation. Foreland fold-and-thrust belts are the frontal and most seismically active part of convergent plate boundaries and generate by folding and thrusting of the sedimentary cover. In particular, fault-fracture distribution, fault rocks permeability, and fault rheology affect both geofluid migration (among which hydrocarbons) and fault slip behaviors (i.e. seismic vs. aseismic) along shallow thrust faults. Therefore, the detailed analysis of exhumed fold-and-thrust belts can provide important information regarding the geometry and connectivity of hydrocarbon and geothermal reservoirs, the mechanical properties of seismogenic faults, and the origin and chemical signatures of paleo-fluids circulating along faults and within hydrocarbon reservoirs. Here, we perform a similar analysis in the Jura fold-and-thrust belt (Eastern France), which represent the outermost toe of the Western Alps orogenic prism and has, so far, not been the site for such studies. This belt is characterized by a succession of folds and thrust faults, which accommodate several tens of km of shortening. We combine geological mapping with structural analyses to reconstruct the tectonic evolution along the frontal thrust of the inner Jura. Results show that: (1) the thrust is characterized by multiple folds and splay thrusts even if displacement is low (up to ~200 m); (2) shortening is accommodated by thrusting, folding, strain partitioning, and flexural slip along bedding; (3) paleostress reconstruction shows a NW-SE to N-S shortening, consistent with the shortening direction active within the Jura fold and-thrust-belt since Late Miocene times; (3) at the microscale, deformation mechanisms consist of pressure solution and veining, which mainly records aseismic deformation and are consistent with the observed aseismic uplift of thrust-related anticline; (4) fault rock fabrics create a low permeability barrier for across-thrust fluid flow. Ongoing geochemical (stable and clumped isotopes) and mineralogical (X-ray diffraction) analyses will help constrain the origin and temperatures of circulating fluids and the depth of fault rock deformation. Many earthquakes propagate up to the Earth's surface producing surface ruptures. Seismic slip propagation is facilitated by along-fault low dynamic frictional resistance, which is controlled by a number of physico-chemical lubrication mechanisms. In particular, rotary shear experiments conducted at seismic slip rates (1 ms -1 ) show that phyllosilicates can facilitate co-seismic slip along faults during earthquakes. This evidence is crucial for hazard assessment along oceanic subduction zones, where pelagic clays participate in seismic slip propagation. Conversely, the reason why, in continental domains, co-seismic slip along faults can propagate up to the Earth's surface is still poorly understood. We document the occurrence of micrometer-thick phyllosilicate-bearing layers along a carbonate-hosted seismogenic extensional fault in the central Apennines, Italy. Using friction experiments, we demonstrate that, at seismic slip rates (1 ms -1 ), similar calcite gouges with pre-existing phyllosilicate-bearing (clay content ≤3 wt.%) micro-layers weaken faster than calcite gouges or mixed calcite-phyllosilicate gouges. We thus propose that, within calcite gouge, ultra-low clay content (≤3 wt.%) localized along micrometer-thick layers can facilitate seismic slip propagation during earthquakes in continental domains, possibly enhancing surface displacement.
