Salivary gland tumors are rare head and neck tumors constituting up to 6% of all head and neck neoplasms; despite being mostly benign, these tumors present in diverse histological subtypes, making them challenging to diagnose and treat. Our research aims to investigate the link between inflammation and tumorigenesis within the salivary glands based on the literature regarding the etiopathogenesis of benign salivary gland tumors. This scoping review was conducted following the PRISMA extension for scoping reviews and reporting guidelines. The search was conducted using the Pubmed and Embase databases. Articles published between 2004 and May 2024 were included in the review. A total of 1097 papers were collected and identified. After 271 duplicates were removed, 826 titles and abstracts were independently reviewed by two researchers. Based on the title and abstract, 735 citations were excluded, and 91 articles were assessed for eligibility. Data were extracted from 46 articles that met the inclusion criteria. The review highlights the significance of inflammation-related factors and its relations with benign salivary gland tumors (SGTs). Knowledge of the etiopathogenesis of these tumors remains insufficient, and their rich immunological background poses challenges in diagnosis. Salivary gland tumors are highly variable in clinical presentation and histology. The World Health Organization (WHO) classifies 22 types of malignant and 11 types of benign tumors of the salivary glands. Diagnosis of salivary gland tumors is based on imaging (ultrasound, magnetic resonance imaging) and fine-needle aspiration biopsy, but the final diagnosis is based on histopathological examination of the removed tumor tissue. In this pilot study, we are testing a new approach to identifying peptide biomarkers in saliva that can be used to diagnose salivary gland tumors. The research material for the peptidomic studies was extracts from washings of neoplastic tissues and healthy tissues (control samples). At the same time, saliva samples from patients and healthy individuals were analyzed. The comparison of the peptidome composition of tissue extracts and saliva samples may allow the identification of potential peptide markers of salivary gland tumors in patients' saliva. The peptidome compositions extracted from 18 tumor and 18 healthy tissue samples, patients' saliva samples (11 samples), and healthy saliva samples (8 samples) were analyzed by LC-MS tandem mass spectrometry. A group of 109 peptides was identified that were present only in the tumor tissue extracts and in the patients' saliva samples. Some of the identified peptides were derived from proteins previously suggested as potential biomarkers of salivary gland tumors (ANXA1, BPIFA2, FGB, GAPDH, HSPB1, IGHG1, VIM) or tumors of other tissues or organs (SERPINA1, APOA2, CSTB, GSTP1, S100A8, S100A9, TPI1). Unfortunately, none of the identified peptides were present in all samples analyzed. This may be due to the high heterogeneity of this type of cancer. The surprising result was that extracts from tumor tissue did not contain peptides derived from salivary gland-specific proteins (STATH, SMR3B, HTN1, HTN3). The main aims of the current research were: (1) to analyze in detail the tensile modulus and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) of orbital wall bones separately for the left and right orbit of the same cadaver and (2) to compare the obtained results with a flexural modulus of the left and right orbit reported earlier by A. C. van Leeuwen et al. [14]. A set of 54 specimens of orbital superior and/or medial walls harvested from 16 human skulls (4 female, 12 male) were tensioned at 0.01 mm/s till fracture. The samples were taken always from both orbits of the same cadaver. For each sample, cross-section area, apparent density, tensile modulus, and UTS were identified. For pooled female and male group apparent density for right and left orbit was identified to be 1.59 ± 0.52 SD) g/cm³ and 1.51 ±0.48 SD) g/cm³, tensile modulus of 2028 ±1729 SD) MPa and of 2706 ±2812 SD) MPa, and UTS of 14.17 ±15.00 SD) MPa and of 15.03 ±11.44 SD) MPa, respectively. For tensile tests, there were no statistical differences between the left and right orbit for pooled male and female groups for (a) apparent density (Student's t-test p = 0.567), (b) UTS (Mann-Whitney U-test p = 0.350) and (c) tensile modulus (Mann-Whitney U-test p = 0.716). For bending tests, there were no statistical differences between the left and right orbit for the pooled male and female group for (a) orbital wall thickness (Student's t-test p = 0.811) and (b) flexural modulus (Mann-Whitney U-test p = 0.206). The comparative analysis between tensile and flexural moduli for pooled left and right groups (with no distinction for male and female) revealed no statistically significant difference (Mann-Whitney U-test p = 0.074). The maximum tensile modulus was 7279 MPa and 9913 MPa for the right and left orbit, respectively, and was similar to the maximum flexural modulus of 6870 MPa and 9170 MPa reported in an earlier study, for the right and left orbit, respectively. Septoplasty is a widely used method in treating deviated septum. Although it is successfully implemented, there are problems with excessive bleeding, septal perforation, or infections. The use of anatomically shaped implants could help overcome these problems. This paper focuses on assessing the possibility of the usage of a nasal septum cartilage implant 3D printed from various market-available filaments. Five different types of laments were used, two of which claim to be suitable for medical use. A combination of modeling, mechanical (bending, compression), structural (FTIR), thermal (DSC, MFR), surface (contact angle), microscopic (optical), degradation (2 M HCl, 5 M NaOH, and 0.01 M PBS), printability, and cell viability (MTT) analyses allowed us to assess the suitability of materials for manufacturing implants. Bioflex had the most applicable properties among the tested materials, but despite the overall good performance, cell viability studies showed toxicity of the material in MTT test. The results of the study show that selected filaments were not suitable for nasal cartilage implants. The poor cell viability of Bioflex could be improved by surface modification. Further research on biocompatible elastic materials for 3D printing is needed either by the synthesis of new materials or by modifying existing ones. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Objectives: The objective of this study was to develop a numerical model of the eyeball and orbit to simulate a blunt injury to the eyeball leading to its rupture, as well as to conduct a comparative analysis of the results obtained using the finite element method against the clinical material concerning patients who had suffered an eyeball rupture due to a blunt force trauma. Material and Methods: Using available sclera biometric and strength data, a numerical model of the eyeball, the orbital contents, and the bony walls were developed from the ground up. Then, 8 different blunt force injury scenarios were simulated. The results of numerical analyses made it possible to identify possible locations and configurations of scleral rupture. The obtained results were compared against the clinical picture of patients hospitalized at the Department of Ophtalmology, Medical University of Gdańsk in 2010-2016 due to isolated blunt force trauma to the eyeball. Results: It has been demonstrated that the extent of damage observed on the numerical model that indicated a possible location of eyeball rupture did not differ from the clinically observed configurations of the scleral injuries. It has been found that the direction of the impact applied determines the location of eyeball rupture. Most often the rupture occurs at the point opposite to the clock-hour/positions of the impact application. The eyeball rupture occurs in the first 7-8 ms after the contact with the striking rigid object. It has been established that the injuries most often affected the upper sectors of the eyeball. Men are definitely more likely to sustain such injuries. Eyeball ruptures lead to significant impairment of visual acuity. Conclusions: This study may contribute to a better understanding of injury mechanisms and better treatment planning. Our objective is to evaluate the correlation between ENT symptom occurrence and antibody titer in convalescent plasma, as well as the influence of age and gender on ENT manifestations of COVID-19. We measured the levels of antibodies in 346 blood donors, who had PCR-confirmed previous infection and met the study inclusion criteria. We recorded otolaryngological symptoms during infection: dry cough, dyspnea, sore throat, smell/taste disturbances, vertigo, dizziness, nausea and vomiting, sudden unilateral loss of hearing, progressive loss of hearing, and tinnitus. In addition, we statistically analyzed the correlation between patients' antibody levels, symptoms, age, and gender using a chi-square test or Fisher exact test. A p-value less than 0.05 determined statistical significance. The mean age of the convalescents was 39.8 ± 9.56 SD and the median of the measured anti-SARS-CoV2 plasma antibodies was 1:368.5. The most common ENT symptoms were smell/taste disturbances (62.43%), dry cough (40.46%), sore throat (24.86%), and dyspnea (23.7%). Smell and taste disturbances were more frequent in younger patients and the marked antibody titer was lower, which was contrary to a higher antibody titer associated with dry cough, dyspnea, and dizziness. Occurrence of sore throat was not correlated with age, sex, or antibody level. There were no significant differences in otological symptoms in female patients. Gender does not affect the occurrence of ENT symptoms. The symptomatic course of SARS-CoV-2 infection is not always associated with higher levels of antibodies in the blood. Despite extensive vaccination, the quantity of patients infected with the SARS‐CoV‐2 virus and its variants continues to grow worldwide. Treating patients with a severe course of COVID‐19 is a difficult challenge. One of the generally accepted and specific therapy methods is the use of plasma rich in anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 antibodies. On the other hand, assessing the antibodies level depending on the time after infection allows for vaccine‐decision. The study marked the level of anti‐SARS‐CoV‐2 IgG antibodies in 351 COVID‐19 convalescent residents of one geographical region in Poland. The study group included blood donors. The studies were cross‐sectional and extended to a questionnaire to determine infection severity. These data were compiled statistically. The study considered epidemiological factors, the time from the end of the infection, and infection severity. The fastest increase of the antibodies level was observed up to 59 days after COVID‐19, and it was statistically significantly higher among men. Higher levels of antibodies were found among people above the average age in both men and women. There was an increase in the level of antibodies since the onset of the disease in men, while in women, it decreased. The antibodies level was also found to depend on the severity of the course of COVID‐19 infection. The optimal group of plasma donors in the studied geographical region is men and women above 39 years old. after a more severe infection. The titer of antibodies increases with time from the disease. In the current research, 68 specimens of orbital superior and/or medial walls taken from 33 human cadavers (12 females, 21 males) were subjected to uniaxial tension untill fracture. The samples were cut in the coronal (38 specimens) and sagittal (30 specimens) planes of the orbital wall. Apparent density (ρapp), tensile Young's modulus (E-modulus) and ultimate tensile strength (UTS) were identified. Innovative test protocols were used to minimize artifacts and analyze the obtained data: (1) grips dedicated to non-symmetrical samples clamping were applied for mechanical testing, (2) non-contact measuring system of video-extensometer was employed for displacement registration, (3) ink imprint technique coupled with CAD analysis was applied to precisely access the cross-sectional areas of tested samples. With regard to a pooled group, apparent density for the coronal and sagittal cut plane was equal 1.53 g/cm3 and 1.57 g/cm3, tensile Young's modulus 2.36 GPa and 2.14 GPa, and ultimate tensile strength 12.66 MPa and 14.35 MPa, respectively. No significant statistical differences (p > 0.05) were found for all the analyzed parameters when comparing coronal and sagittal plane cut groups. These observations confirmed the hypothesis that direction of sample cut does not affect the mechanical response of the orbital wall tissue, thus suggesting that mechanical properties of orbital wall bone show isotropic character. Introduction: Sialolithiasis remains a clinical problem with unclear etiopathogenesis, lack of prevention methods, and only surgical treatment. Materials and methods: An ultrastructure examination of submandibular sialoliths obtained from patients with chronic sialolithiasis was conducted using a scanning electron microscope and X‐ray photoelectron spectroscopy. Results: Based on the results, we divided sialoliths into three types: calcified (CAL), organic/lipid (LIP), and mixed (MIX). The core structure of the CAL and MIX is very similar. The core of the LIP has a prevalence of organic components. The intermediate layers' structure of the CAL is different from LIP and MIX. In LIP and MIX, the organic component begins to increase in intermediate layers rapidly. The structure of the superficial layers for all types of sialoliths is similar. Conclusions: We introduced a new classification of the submandibular salivary gland stones. Based on the results, it can be said that sialoliths type CAL and LIP have their separate path of origin and development, while MIX is formed as CAL stone, and the further pathway of their growth passes as LIP stones. Organic components were much more than inorganic in all layers of salivary gland stones, which highly prevents their dissolution in the patient's salivary gland duct. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The more we know about mechanisms of the human orbital blowout type of trauma, the better we will be able to prevent them in the future. As long as the buckling mechanism's veracity is not in doubt, the hydraulic mechanism is not based on equally strong premises. To investigate the correctness of the hydraulic mechanism's theory, two different methods of implementation of the hydraulic load to the finite element method (FEM) model of the orbit were performed. The intraorbital hydraulic pressure was introduced as a face load applied directly to the orbit in the first variant, while in the second one the load was applied to the orbit indirectly as a set of nodal forces transferred from the external surface of the eyeball via the intraorbital tissues to the orbital walls within the contact problem. Such an approach is aimed at a better understanding of the pattern for the formation of blowout fractures during the indirect load applied to the orbital bones. The nonlinear dynamic analysis of both numerical models showed that the potential fracture was observed in the second variant only, embracing a relatively large area: both medial and lower wall of the orbit. Interestingly, the pressure generated by the intraorbital entities transferred the energy of the impact to the orbital sidewalls mainly; thus, the nature of the mechanism known as the hydraulic was far from the expected hydraulic pressure. According to the eyeball's deformation as well as the areas of the greatest Huber-Mises-Hencky (H-M-H) stress within the orbit, a new term of strut mechanism was proposed instead of the hydraulic mechanism as more realistic regarding the investigated phenomenon. Background: This study aimed to present the correlation between headaches and anatomical changes within the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses. Material and methods: This study includes a literature search and our observations of 24 patients regarding the correlation of headaches with the nasal cavity and paranasal sinus anatomy. Results: According to the literature, about 12% of the population suffer from chronic/recurrent headaches. In about 60% of patients, the headache was accompanied by different types of the anatomical structure of the nasal cavity and paranasal sinuses, which may predispose to frequent recurrence or poor control of pain. We observed 2 groups of patients. Group I consisted of 18 patients, who in according to the according to ICHD-3 classification were diagnosed with a headache or facial pain attributed to disorder of the head or neck. Group II included 6 patients with a non-diagnosed recurrent headache, who after septoplasty reported either complete headache resolution or a significantly reduced frequency of headache attacks and duration. Statistically significant differences in the surgical treatment outcomes between patients before and after therapy were observed (p = 0,00001). Conclusion: Several anatomical changes can predispose or cause recurrent headaches. In most cases, they require surgical intervention. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Introduction and objective. Craniofacial injury at the workplace may lead to orbital blowout fractures. The aim of the study is the development of own numerical model of the eye orbit, assessment of the damage zones, and comparing them with clinical examinations. In addition, the current legal status of patients after injuries is presented. Materials and method. In laboratory tests performed on bones collected from the upper and medial orbital wall (examination on fresh corpses), the Young's modulus was determined for these bones. Based on the CT image, a numerical model of the eye orbit was created. The damage zones within the eye socket were assessed after a blow (dynamic model) to the inferior and lateral walls, and only to the inferior wall. Comparative clinical material were 9 patients with orbital blowout fracture treated at the Clinic of Otolaryngology Results. Experiment 1: the damage zone covered an area of 0.54cm2, and was located medially and laterally from the infraorbital nerve canal. Experiment 2: the damage zone was smaller - 0.38 cm2, and located medially to the infraorbital nerve canal. The results obtained in the experiment were compared with the CT image of the eye sockets of patients after injuries. On this basis, presumptions were made concerning the mechanism of the trauma. Conclusions. The finite element method is a good tool for assessing the pathomechanism of trauma, as well as for an attempt to determine the circumstances of the event. Based on analysis of the numerical and clinical images, the necessity for using protective measures which absorb the impact to the inferior wall and temporal areas should be emphasised, as well as the fact that using merely goggles is insufficient protection of the eye orbit. The aim of work was the epidemiological analysis of the occurrence of sialolithiasis of the submandibular gland in adults and the evaluation of the ultrastructure of salivary stones. The study sample consisted of 44 sialoliths. Analysis of the structure and chemical composition of sialoliths was performed using a Scanning Electron Microscope and Raman Spectroscopy. Comparing our results with the literature we can say that the epidemiology of sialolithiasis has not changed significantly over the past 50 years. A wide variety of sialoliths structure was observed. In 75% (33) cases a layered structure of salivary stones was observed, while in 25% (11) – homogeneous structure. The various distribution of organic and inorganic components was observed among all the analyzed sialoliths. Raman spectroscopy allows for preliminary analysis of the sialoliths structure with only a qualitative assessment of their composition, which significantly reduces the research value of this method. The presence of organic and inorganic compounds in the core and inner layers of the salivary glands stones confirms 2 basic theories of the formation of sialoliths: inflammation and deposition of the inorganic component as a result of disruption of saliva flow in the salivary glands.
