Cellulose paper, a material that is naturally derived, low cost, lightweight, eco-friendly, and mechanically deformable, plays important roles in producing next-generation flexible electronics. Following the booms in the development of functional electronics, the soft actuators built from cellulose paper have attracted great attention. In this focused review, the milestones and recent achievements of cellulose paper-based actuators are summarized. Electro-, thermal, moisture and magnetic actuation mechanisms are utilized to acquire energy from external stimuli. Corresponding functional materials and available fabrication techniques like film assembly and layer deposition are described. Programmable actions for the emerging applications in bionics, paper grippers and robots are realized by pursuing different strategies to control the responding deformation. Along with a conclusion, the existing challenges and possible solutions in evaluating and improving the performance of cellulose paper are summarized in the final section.

Flexible electronics are excepted to be an important support for the next electronic age, and their quick, cost-effective, and easily realized fabrication is a key motivating factor to the on-going and future applications. The fabrication technique derived from day-to-day handwriting has prompted the advancement of producing flexible electronics with readily available, low-cost and user-friendly tools. Combined advances in materials science, mechanical engineering, and electrical engineering strengthen this method in implementing electronic components, circuits, sensors, and energy devices. This review focuses on the milestones and recent achievements of handwriting flexible electronics, concerning the available tools, writing mechanisms, involved materials, and emerging applications. On account of the merits and demerits of the handwriting technique, discussions and conclusions about the superiorities, possible usages, challenges and predictions are also presented.

This paper proposes a multidirectional piezoelectric vibration energy harvester based on an improved U-shaped structure with cross-connected beams. Benefitting from the bi-directional capacity of U-shaped beam and additional bending mode induced by cross-connected configuration, the proposed structure can well capture the vibrations in 3D space at the frequencies lower than 15 Hz. These features are further validated by finite element analyses and theorical formulas. The prototype is fabricated and the experiments under different conditions are carried out. The results show that the proposed harvester can generate favorable voltage and power under multidirectional vibrations at a low operating frequency. Practical applications of charging capacitors and powering a wireless sensor node demonstrate the feasibility of this energy harvester in supplying power for engineering devices.

To validate the potentials of unequal-length section-varied geometry in developing a orthoplanar spring-based piezoelectric vibration energy harvester (PVEH), a modified spring with quad-trapezoidal-leg configuration is designed, analyzed, and fabricated. A basic quad-trapezoidal-leg orthoplanar spring (QTOPS) is theoretically analyzed, and the structural effective stress and eigenfrequency are formulated to determine the main dimension parameters. Then, an improved QTOPS with additional intermediations is constructed and simulated. Porotypes with different leg geometries and mass configurations are fabricated and tested. The results of QTOPS and a conventional rectangular-shaped spring are compared. It is verified that the proposed approach provides the structure with an enlarged effective stress and lower resonant frequency, which makes it more suitable to construct a high-performance PVEH than the orthoplanar spring with equal-length or rectangular legs.
