Abstract Atomic-level coordination engineering is an efficient strategy for tuning the catalytic performance of single-atom catalysts (SACs). However, their rational design has so far been plagued by the lack of a universal correlation between the coordination symmetry and catalytic properties. Herein, we synthesised planar-symmetry-broken CuN3 (PSB-CuN3) SACs through microwave heating for electrocatalytic CO2 reduction. Remarkably, the as-prepared catalysts exhibited a selectivity of 94.3% towards formate at −0.73 V vs. RHE, surpassing the symmetrical CuN4 catalyst (72.4% at −0.93 V vs. RHE). In a flow cell equipped with a PSB-CuN3 electrode, over 90% formate selectivity was maintained at an average current density of 94.4 mA cm−2 during 100 h operation. By combining definitive structural identification with operando X-ray spectroscopy and theoretical calculations, we revealed that the intrinsic local symmetry breaking from planar D 4h configuration induces an unconventional dsp hybridisation, and thus a strong correlation between the catalytic activity and microenvironment of metal centre (i.e., coordination number and distortion), with high preference for formate production in CuN3 moiety. The finding opens an avenue for designing efficient SACs with specific local symmetries for selective electrocatalysis.

Precise synthesis at the atomic scale is a highly desirable and controllable route for the preparation of heterogeneous catalysts with the desired structure and properties, which promotes the rational design of highly efficient catalysts and facilitates the understanding of structure-properties relationship. The precise construction of the active sites of the catalysts provides important opportunities for atomic insight into the correlation between structure and catalytic performance. In this review, the atomic-level tuning strategies for the precise synthesis of heterogeneous catalysts are summarized with the emphasis on the precise control of the structure of active sites, including single atom sites, dual atom sites and complex active sites. Furthermore, we illustrate the crucial role of atomic-level regulation of structure in determining the catalytic performance by providing typical catalysis examples in different reactions. In the end, some perspectives on the further development of precise synthesis of catalysts at the atomic level are presented.

Supported atomic clusters with precise nuclearity are intermediate states between single-atom catalysts and nanoparticles in size. Here the authors summarize and discuss synthetic strategies of supported atomic clusters with unique catalytic properties for heterogeneous reactions.

Summary: The excessive CO2 emission has resulted in climate changes, which has threatened human existence. Photocatalytic and electrocatalytic CO2 reduction, driven by wind electricity and solar energy, are feasible ways of tackling carbon dioxide emission, as both energies are clean and renewable. Single-atom catalyst (SAC) is a candidate owing to excellent electrocatalytic and photocatalytic performance. Methods for preparing an SAC by using metal-organic frameworks (MOFs) as support or precursors are summarized. Also, applications in energy conversion are exhibited. However, the real challenge is to improve the selectivity of catalytic reactions to yield higher value products, which is to be discussed.

Abstract Objective Neural tube defects (NTDs) are the most serious and common birth defects in the clinic. The SRY-related HMG box B1 (SoxB1) gene family has been implicated in different processes of early embryogenesis. Sox19b is a maternally expressed gene in the SoxB1 family that is found in the region of the presumptive central nervous system (CNS), but its role and mechanism in embryonic neural stem cells (NSCs) during neural tube development have not yet been explored. Considering that Sox19b is specific to bony fish, we intended to investigate the role and mechanism of Sox19b in neural tube development in zebrafish embryos. Material and methods Morpholino (MO) antisense oligonucleotides were used to construct a Sox19b loss-of-function zebrafish model. The phenotype and the expression of related genes were analysed by in situ hybridization and immunolabelling. Epigenetic modifications were detected by western blot and chromatin immunoprecipitation. Results In this study, we found that zebrafish embryos exhibited a reduced or even deleted forebrain phenotype after the expression of the Sox19b gene was inhibited. Moreover, we found for the first time that knockdown of Sox19b reduced the proliferation of NSCs; increased the transcription levels of Ngn1, Ascl1, HuC, Islet1, and cyclin-dependent kinase (CDK) inhibitors; and led to premature differentiation of NSCs. Finally, we found that knockdown of Sox19b decreased the levels of EZH2/H3K27me3 and decreased the level of H3K27me3 at the promoters of Ngn1 and ascl1a. Conclusion Together, our data demonstrate that Sox19b plays an essential role in early NSC proliferation and differentiation through EZH2-mediated histone methylation in neural tube development. This study established the role of transcription factor Sox19b and epigenetic factor EZH2 regulatory network on NSC development, which provides new clues and theoretical guidance for the clinical treatment of neural tube defects.

The manipulation of the geometric coordination structure of diatomic site (DS) catalysts to promote the CO2-to-CO conversion process has garnered significant attention. However, the challenge remains in how to rationally design the catalytic microenvironment of DSs to enhance the kinetics of CO product formation. Herein, we present a post-synthetic co-substitution (PSCR) method for producing Co–Mn DS catalysts with low N coordination numbers (referred to as L-Co1Mn1-NC) on pre-designed N-doped carbon derived from metal–organic framework nanorods. When utilized in the process of CO2 electroreduction, the L-Co1Mn1-NC catalyst demonstrates a CO faradaic efficiency (FE) of up to 97.6% at −0.47 V, which is significantly higher compared to those of Co1Mn1-NC, Co1-NC, and Mn1-NC catalysts. In situ ATR-SEIRAS and theoretical simulations demonstrate that the creation of Co–Mn DSs with a lower N coordination number can notably facilitate the desorption of CO*, thus expediting the kinetics of the CO2-to-CO conversion process. This study introduces a novel approach to fine-tune the catalytic microenvironment of multi-atomic sites in order to facilitate the conversion and utilization of CO2. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A method, improved d-SPE extration couple with ultra performance liquid chromatography tandem-mass spectrometry (UPLC-MS/MS), was developed for the determination of pentachlorophenol and its sodium salt residue in eggs. The sodium pentachlorophenol in the eggs was converted firstly into pentachlorophenol under acidic conditions, extracted by 1.5% (v/v) acetic acid/acetonitril, and the extraction solution was purified finally by disperse solid phase extraction. The composition of dispersive sorbents was optimized based on the recoveries and matrix effects. The recoveries at fortification levels of 0.5, 5 and 50.0 μg/kg in eggs ranged from 72.2% to 89.8% with the relative standard deviations of 0.2%~0.8%. The limits of quantification (LOQ) was 0.5 μg/kg. Market samples were quantified, and PCP residues were found, but all the detection levels were below the method LOQ. We demonstrated that UPLC – MS/MS in combination with modified d-SPE can be used to routinely monitor PCP residues in egg samples.

Abstract Background Primary cervical cancer screening and treating precancerous lesions are effective ways to prevent cervical cancer. However, the coverage rates of human papillomavirus (HPV) vaccines and routine screening are low in most developing countries and even some developed countries. This study aimed to explore the benefit of an artificial intelligence-assisted cytology (AI) system in a screening program for a cervical cancer high-risk population in China. Methods A total of 1231 liquid-based cytology (LBC) slides from women who underwent colposcopy at the Chinese PLA General Hospital from 2018 to 2020 were collected. All women had received a histological diagnosis based on the results of colposcopy and biopsy. The sensitivity (Se), specificity (Sp), positive predictive value (PPV), negative predictive value (NPV), false-positive rate (FPR), false-negative rate (FNR), overall accuracy (OA), positive likelihood ratio (PLR), negative likelihood ratio (NLR) and Youden index (YI) of the AI, LBC, HPV, LBC + HPV, AI + LBC, AI + HPV and HPV Seq LBC screening strategies at low-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (LSIL) and high-grade squamous intraepithelial lesion (HSIL) thresholds were calculated to assess their effectiveness. Receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve analysis was conducted to assess the diagnostic values of the different screening strategies. Results The Se and Sp of the primary AI-alone strategy at the LSIL and HSIL thresholds were superior to those of the LBC + HPV cotesting strategy. Among the screening strategies, the YIs of the AI strategy at the LSIL + threshold and HSIL + threshold were the highest. At the HSIL + threshold, the AI strategy achieved the best result, with an AUC value of 0.621 (95% CI, 0.587–0.654), whereas HPV testing achieved the worst result, with an AUC value of 0.521 (95% CI, 0.484–0.559). Similarly, at the LSIL + threshold, the LBC-based strategy achieved the best result, with an AUC of 0.637 (95% CI, 0.606–0.668), whereas HPV testing achieved the worst result, with an AUC of 0.524 (95% CI, 0.491–0.557). Moreover, the AUCs of the AI and LBC strategies at this threshold were similar (0.631 and 0.637, respectively). Conclusions These results confirmed that AI-only screening was the most authoritative method for diagnosing HSILs and LSILs, improving the accuracy of colposcopy diagnosis, and was more beneficial for patients than traditional LBC + HPV cotesting.

Clonal plants are widely distributed in the riparian zone and play a very important role in the maintenance of wetland ecosystem function. Flooding is an environmental stress for plants in the riparian zone, and the response of plants varies according to the depth and duration of flooding. However, there is a lack of research on the growth response of clonal plants during flooding, and the endogenous hormone response mechanism of clonal plants is still unclear. In the present study, Alternanthera philoxeroides, a clonal plant in the riparian zone, was used to investigate the time-dependent stem elongation, the elongation of different part of the immature internodes, and the relationship between growth elongation and the phytohormone gibberellin (GA) under a series of submergence depths (0 m, 2 m, 5 m, and 9 m). The results showed that stem elongation occurred under all treatments, however, compared to 0 m (control), plants grew more under 2 m and 5 m submergence depth, while grew less under 9 m water depth. Additionally, basal part elongation of the immature internode was the predominant factor contributing to the stem growth of A. philoxeroides under different submergence depths. The phytohormone contents in basal part of the mature and immature internodes showed that GA induced the differential elongation of internode. Plant submerged at depth of 2 m had the highest GA accumulation, but plant submerged at depth of 9 m had the lowest GA concentration. These data suggested that GA biosynthesis are essential for stem elongation in A. philoxeroides, and the basal part of the immature internode was the main position of the GA biosynthesis. This study provided new information about the rapid growth and invasion of the clonal plant A. philoxeroides around the world, further clarified the effects of submergence depth and duration on the elongation of the stem, and deepened our understanding of the growth response of terrestrial plants in deeply flooded environments.

Complete submergence, especially deep submergence, poses a serious threat to the growth and survival of plants. One study previously showed that Alternanthera philoxeroides (a herbaceous perennial plant) submerged at depth of 2 m presented fast stem elongation and reduced stem elongation as water depth increased. In the present study, we aimed to figure out from the morphological and anatomical perspective how the differential growth response of the plant to water depth was achieved. We investigated the elongation of different stem parts and the relationship of stem elongation to cell size and number in A. philoxeroides by conducting experiments using a series of submergence depths (0 m, 2 m, 5 m, and 9 m). The results showed that, in comparison with unsubmerged plants, completely submerged plants exhibited enhanced elongation at depths of 2 m and 5 m but suppressed elongation at depth of 9 m in immature stem internodes, and displayed very little elongation in mature stem internodes at any depths. The stem growth of A. philoxeroides at any submergence depth was chiefly caused by the elongation of the basal parts of immature internodes. The elongation of the basal parts of immature internodes was highly correlated to both cell proliferation and cell enlargement, but the elongation of the middle and upper parts of immature internodes correlated nearly only with cell enlargement. This study provided new information on the growth responses of A. philoxeroides to heterogeneous submergence environments and deepened our understanding of the growth performance of terrestrial plants in habitats prone to deep floods.

Background/purpose: The incidence and patient population of medication-related osteonecrosis of the jaw (MRONJ) has dramatically increased due to the use of drugs suppressing bone metastasis. However, its clinical treatment is still very difficult. The aim of this study was to evaluate the effectiveness and outcome of immediate fibular flap reconstruction for MRONJ in the mandible. Materials and methods: Patients who underwent immediate fibular flap reconstruction for MRONJ in the mandible in our institution from 1990 to 2022 were screened and identified. Their demographics, drug history, symptoms, surgical parameters and follow-up data were collected and analyzed. Results: In total, 25 patients with MRONJ stage 3 were included. The main cause of drug administration was osseous metastasis (88%), and zoledronate was the main drug. Pain, swelling (44%), pyorrhea (28%), extraoral fistulas (16%) and necrotic bone exposure (12%) were the main chief complaints. After segmental mandibulectomy, the fibular flap harvest was 9.73 ± 3.37 cm, and 18/25 (72%) were cut into two segments to reconstruct the mandible. Sixty-eight percent had an intraoral skin paddle placed. All of the flaps survived, and 21/25 (84%) of the soft tissue underwent primary healing. During follow-up, the alleviation of symptoms was effective, and there was no primary disease progression or death. Conclusion: This is the largest comprehensive investigation of fibular flap reconstruction for MRONJ in the mandible, which is proved to be an alternative and effective treatment for managing advanced patients with MRONJ.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a machine learning algorithm-based model for predicting invasive Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess syndrome(IKPLAS) in diabetes mellitus and compare the performance of different models. Methods The clinical signs and data on the admission of 213 diabetic patients with Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscesses were collected as variables. The optimal feature variables were screened out, and then Artificial Neural Network, Support Vector Machine, Logistic Regression, Random Forest, K-Nearest Neighbor, Decision Tree, and XGBoost models were established. Finally, the model's prediction performance was evaluated by the ROC curve, sensitivity (recall), specificity, accuracy, precision, F1-score, Average Precision, calibration curve, and DCA curve. Results Four features of hemoglobin, platelet, D-dimer, and SOFA score were screened by the recursive elimination method, and seven prediction models were established based on these variables. The AUC (0.969), F1-Score(0.737), Sensitivity(0.875) and AP(0.890) of the SVM model were the highest among the seven models. The KNN model showed the highest specificity (1.000). Except that the XGB and DT models over-estimates the occurrence of IKPLAS risk, the other models' calibration curves are a good fit with the actual observed results. Decision Curve Analysis showed that when the risk threshold was between 0.4 and 0.8, the net rate of intervention of the SVM model was significantly higher than that of other models. In the feature importance ranking, the SOFA score impacted the model significantly. Conclusion An effective prediction model of invasion Klebsiella pneumoniae liver abscess syndrome in diabetes mellitus could be established by a machine learning algorithm, which had potential application value.

Abstract Background N6-methyladenosine (m6A) RNA modification plays a critical role in various physiological and pathological conditions. However, the role of m6A modification in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC) remains elusive. Methods In this study, the expression of m6A demethylases was detected by HNSCC tissue microarray. m6A-RNA immunoprecipitation (MeRIP) sequencing and RNA sequencing were used to identify downstream targets of ALKBH5. Comprehensive identification of RNA-binding proteins by mass spectrometry (ChIRP-MS) was used to explore the m6A “readers”. Tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes were analyzed in SCC7-bearing xenografts in C3H mice. Results Here, we demonstrate the downregulation of m6A status and upregulation of two demethylases in HNSCC. Silencing the m6A demethylase alkB homolog 5, RNA demethylase (ALKBH5) suppresses tumor progression in vitro and in vivo. m6A-RNA immunoprecipitation sequencing reveals that ALKBH5 downregulates the m6A modification of DDX58 mRNA. Moreover, RIG-I, encoded by the DDX58 mRNA, reverses the protumorigenic characteristics of ALKBH5. ChIRP-MS demonstrates that HNRNPC binds to the m6A sites of DDX58 mRNA to promote its maturation. ALKBH5 overexpression inhibits RIG-I-mediated IFNα secretion through the IKKε/TBK1/IRF3 pathway. The number of tumor-infiltrating lymphocytes in C3H immunocompetent mice is reduced by ALKBH5 overexpression and restored by IFNα administration. Upregulation of AKLBH5 negatively correlates with RIG-I and IFNα expression in HNSCC patients. Conclusions These findings unveil a novel mechanism of immune microenvironment regulation mediated by m6A modification through the ALKBH5/RIG-I/IFNα axis, providing a rationale for therapeutically targeting epitranscriptomic modulators in HNSCC.

The hydrosilylation reaction is one of the largest-scale application of homogeneous catalysis and is widely used to enable the commercial manufacture of silicon products. However, considerable issues including disposable platinum consumption, undesired side reactions and unacceptable catalyst residues still remain. Here, we synthesize a heterogeneous partially charged single-atom platinum supported on anatase TiO2 (Pt1 δ+/TiO2) catalyst via an electrostatic-induction ion exchange and twodimensional confinement strategy, which can catalyze hydrosilylation reaction with almost complete conversion and produce exclusive adduct. Density functional theory calculations reveal that unexpected property of Pt1 δ+/TiO2 originates from atomic dispersion of active species and unique partially positive charge Ptδ+ electronic structure that conventional nanocatalysts do not possess. The fabrication of single-atom Pt1 δ+/TiO2 catalyst accomplishes a reasonable use of Pt through recycling and maximum atom-utilized efficiency, indicating the potential to achieve a green hydrosilylation industry. Global climate change has resulted in an increase in intensity and frequency of flooding, plants living in lowlands, and shore areas have to confront submergence caused by flooding, submergence-tolerant plants usually respond by adopting either escape or quiescence strategies. While certain plants exhibit a changeover from escape strategy upon partial submergence to quiescence strategy under complete shallow submergence, it remains unknown whether plants completely submerged at different water depths would adjust their strategies to cope with the change in submergence depth. Alternanthera philoxeroides is an ideal species to explore this adjustment as it is widely distributed in flood-disturbed habitats and exhibits an escape strategy when completely submerged in shallow waters. We investigated the responses of A. philoxeroides in terms of morphology, anatomy, and non-structural carbohydrate metabolism by conducting experiments using a series of submergence depths (0, 2, 5, and 9 m). During the submergence treatment, environmental factors such as light, dissolved oxygen, and temperature for submerged plants were kept constant. The results showed that A. philoxeroides plants submerged at depth of 2 m presented an escape strategy via fast stem elongation, extensive pith cavity development, and small biomass loss. However, the retarded stem elongation, reduced pith cavity transverse area, and increased biomass loss along the water depth gradient indicated that A. philoxeroides altered its growth response as water depth increased from 2 to 9 m. It is found that the changeover of response strategies occurred at higher submergence depths (5–9 m). Based on the results of our experiments, we demonstrated that water depth played an important role in driving the change in strategy. The water-depth-dependent growth performance of A. philoxeroides would benefit the species in habit exploration and exploitation. Further studies should focus on the performances of plants when submerged at varied water depths with different light climates and dissolved oxygen content, and how water depths drive the response behaviors of the submerged plants.

We mainly investigate Dicke phase transition at finite temperature in an optomechanical-atomic cavity by means of the functional path-integral approach. By the thermodynamic equilibrium equation, the mean photon number, the scaled atomic population, the mean phonon number, the average energy and the rich phase diagram are depicted in the existence of the nonlinear atom–photon interaction, the nonlinear photon–photon coupling strength, the pump–cavity detuning and the finite temperature. Beside Dicke phase transition from the normal phase (NP) to the superraidant phase (SP) at finite temperature, the collapse of the SP and the dynamically unstable state (DUS) are revealed showing the effects of the photon–phonon coupling strength ξ and nonlinear atom–photon interaction U. Meanwhile, a new phase transition occurs from the SP to the dynamically unstable state (DUS) at the turning point gtwith the existence of ξ or U. The region of the SP can be completely eliminated by the mechanically and thermally stimulated photon-emission. The entropy and corresponding specific heats are presented to demonstrate the corresponding critical behavior at the phase transition point.

Abstract Background Interferon alpha (IFNα) is a well-established regulator of immunosuppression in head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC), while the role of long noncoding RNAs (lncRNAs) in immunosuppression remains largely unknown. Methods Differentially expressed lncRNAs were screened under IFNα stimulation using lncRNA sequencing. The role and mechanism of lncRNA in immunosuppression were investigated in HNSCC in vitro and in vivo. Results We identified a novel IFNα-induced upregulated lncRNA, lncMX1–215, in HNSCC. LncMX1–215 was primarily located in the cell nucleus. Ectopic expression of lncMX1–215 markedly inhibited expression of the IFNα-induced, immunosuppression-related molecules programmed cell death 1 ligand 1 (PD-L1) and galectin-9, and vice versa. Subsequently, histone deacetylase (HDAC) inhibitors promoted the expression of PD-L1 and galectin-9. Binding sites for H3K27 acetylation were found on PD-L1 and galectin-9 promoters. Mechanistically, we found that lncMX1–215 directly interacted with GCN5, a known H3K27 acetylase, to interrupt its binding to H3K27 acetylation. Clinically, negative correlations between lncMX1–215 and PD-L1 and galectin-9 expression were observed. Finally, overexpression of lncMX1–215 suppressed HNSCC proliferation and metastasis capacity in vitro and in vivo. Conclusions Our results suggest that lncMX1–215 negatively regulates immunosuppression by interrupting GCN5/H3K27ac binding in HNSCC, thus providing novel insights into immune checkpoint blockade treatment.

Abstract Background Long intergenic noncoding RNA p21 (lincRNA-p21) is considered a target of wild-type p53, but little is known about its regulation by mutant p53 and its functions during the progression of head and neck squamous cell carcinoma (HNSCC). Methods RNAscope was used to detect the expression and distribution of lincRNA-p21. Chromatin immunoprecipitation and electrophoretic mobility shift assays were performed to analyze the transcriptional regulation of lincRNA-p21 in HNSCC cells. The biological functions of lincRNA-p21 were investigated in vitro and in vivo. RNA immunoprecipitation and pull-down assays were used to detect the direct binding of lincRNA-p21. Results Lower lincRNA-p21 expression was observed in HNSCC tissues and indicated worse prognosis. Both wild and mutant type p53 transcriptionally regulated lincRNA-p21, but nuclear transcription factor Y subunit alpha (NF-YA) was essential for mutant p53 in the regulation of lincRNA-p21. Ectopic expression of lincRNA-p21 significantly inhibited cell proliferation capacity in vitro and in vivo and vice versa. Moreover, the overexpression of lincRNA-p21 induced G1 arrest and apoptosis. Knockdown NF-YA expression reversed tumor suppressor activation of lincRNA-p21 in mutant p53 cells, not wild-type p53 cells. A negative correlation was observed between lincRNA-p21 and the phosphorylation of signal transducer and activator of transcription 3 (p-STAT3) in HNSCC tissues. High lincRNA-p21 expression inhibited Janus kinase 2 (JAK2)/STAT3 signal activation and vice versa. Further, we observed direct binding to STAT3 by lincRNA-p21 in HNSCC cells, which suppressed STAT3-induced oncogenic potential. Conclusions Our results revealed the transcriptional regulation of lincRNA-p21 by the mutant p53/NF-YA complex in HNSCC. LincRNA-p21 acted as a tumor suppressor in HNSCC progression, which was attributed to direct binding to STAT3 and blocking of JAK2/STAT3 signaling.

Glebionis coronaria (Asteraceae) is widely distributed in China, and it regulates the stomach, strengthens the spleen, reduces blood pressure, and reinforces the brain. In this study, the complete chloroplast genome sequence of G. coronaria was reported. The total chloroplast genome cycle was 149,750 bp, and it formed a large single-copy (LSC, 82,290 bp), a small single-copy (SSC, 18,414 bp), and two inverted repeats (IR, 24,523 bp) regions. The GC content of this genome was 36.35%. The whole-genome contained 128 genes, including 84 protein-coding genes, 36 tRNA genes, and eight rRNA genes. Phylogenetic analysis indicated that G. coronaria appeared within a clade comprised of Chrysanthemum species.

Background The hatch window that varies from 24 to 48 h is known to influence post-hatch performance of chicks. A narrow hatch window is needed for commercial poultry industry to acquire a high level of uniformity of chick quality. Hatching synchronization observed in avian species presents possibilities in altering hatch window in artificial incubation. Methods Layer eggs which were laid on the same day by a single breeder flock and stored for no more than two days started incubation 12 h apart to obtain developmental distinction. The eggs of different initial incubation time were mixed as rows adjacent to rows on day 12 of incubation. During the hatching period (since day 18), hatching time of individual eggs and hatch window were obtained by video recordings. Embryonic development (day 18 and 20) and post-hatch performance up to day 7 were measured. Results The manipulation of mixing eggs of different initial incubation time shortened the hatch window of late incubated eggs in the manipulated group by delaying the onset of hatching process, and improved the hatchability. Compared to the control groups, chick embryos or chicks in the egg redistribution group showed no significant difference in embryonic development and post-hatch performance up to day 7. Discussion We have demonstrated that eggs that were incubated with advanced eggs performed a narrow spread of hatch with higher hatchability, normal embryonic development as well as unaffected chick quality. This specific manipulation is applicable in industrial poultry production to shorten hatch window and improve the uniformity of chick quality.

PURPOSE:To re-evaluated the clinic efficacy of ureteroscopic lithotripsy (URS) and extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy (ESWL) on ureteral calculi with Cochrane systematic reviews in this paper.METHODS: We searched clinical randomized controlled trials and prospective controlled trials in databases such as Cochrane library, Medline, Springer, Elsevier Science Direct, PubMed. Pooled estimate of risk ratios (RRs), standard mean difference (SMD) with 95% confidence intervals (CIs) were used as measure of effect sizes. Summary effect estimates were also stratified by sample size, study design and study region. The overall effect sizes were derived using a random-effects model or fixed-effects model when appreciated, and meta-analysis were conducted with software RewMan 5.0.RESULTS:The meta-analysis suggested that there were significant differences of post-treatment stone free rate, repeat treatment rate, patients' satisfaction, incidence of postoperative complications, operation time and hospital stays between ESWL treatment cases and URS treatment cases. But in the sample sizes analysis, there were no significant differences of the post-treatment stone free rate and repeat treatment rate when the sample sizes were less than 100.CONCLUSIONS: Compared to the ureteroscopic lithotripsy treatment, extracorporeal shock wave lithotripsy treatment provided a significantly lower post-treatment stone free rate, but it also obviously brought out less postoperative complications, shorter operation time and hospital stays.
