Urban air temperature rises induced by the urban heat island (UHIE) effect or by global warming (GW) can be beneficial in winter but detrimental in summer. The SCIENCE-Outdoor model was used to simulate changes to sensible heat release and CO2 emissions from buildings yielded by four UHIE countermeasures and five GW countermeasures. This model can evaluate the thermal condition of building envelope surfaces, both inside and outside. The results showed that water-consuming UHIE countermeasures such as evaporative space cooling and roof water showering provided positive effects (decreasing sensible heat release and CO2 emissions related to space conditioning) in summer. Additionally, they had no negative (unwanted cooling) effects in winter since they can be turned off in the heating season. Roof greening can provide the greatest space-conditioning CO2 emissions reductions among four UHIE countermeasures, and it reduces the amount of heat release slightly in the heating season. Since the effect on reducing carbon dioxide (CO2) emissions by UHIE countermeasures is not very significant, it is desirable to introduce GW countermeasures in order to reduce CO2 emissions. The significance of this study is that it constructed the new simulation model SCIENCE-Outdoor and applied it to show the influence of countermeasures upon both heat release and CO2 emissions.

To develop a decarbonized society, two contradictory requirements must be met: (1) reducing energy demand and (2) creating flexibility in energy demand in order to respond to fluctuations in renewable electricity generation. To help meet these requirements, conventional energy efficiency studies should be extended to incorporate “energy demand science.” This paper presents a definition of “energy demand science” and then reviews the related history and research questions of energy demand science in the context of the residential sector. It then examines three key areas that must be integrated into the next-generation energy demand science: (1) energy demand measurement with detailed granularity and analysis using cutting-edge technology, (2) energy demand modeling that helps clarify the formation mechanism of energy demand, and (3) identification of the factors that influence people's decision making, which represents typical human-dimension research. Energy demand science consists of technical, human, natural environment, demographic, and land-use dimensions, and their integration is key for the establishment of a decarbonized society.

Arsine is one of the most potent hemolytic agents. It is important to clarify arsine metabolism as well as its chemical interactions with biological components. The aim of the present study was to clarify arsine metabolism by arsenic speciation analysis in serum and urine from an acute poisoning patient with hematuria, anemia, and renal and liver dysfunction. Speciation analysis of arsenics in serum and urine was performed using HPLC-ICP-MS. The total arsenic (T-As) concentration in serum was 244.8 μg/l at admission and 97.1 μg/l at discharge. In the speciation analysis, four kinds of As compounds derived from arsine metabolism were detected in serum and urine. The concentration of arsenite (AsIII), arsenate (AsV), monomethylarsonic acid (MMA), and dimethylarsinic acid (DMA) in serum at admission were 45.8, 5.2, 17.9 and 9.3 μg/l, respectively. The concentrations of AsIII, AsV, and MMA decreased with biological half time (BHT) of 30.1, 43.0, and 96.3 h, respectively. Only DMA was increased at discharge. The urinary AsIII, AsV, MMA and DMA concentrations were 223.0, 12.1, 317.5 and 1053.5 μg/l at discharge, and decreased with BHT of 15.1, 20.8, 14.7, and 16.0 d, respectively. The results indicate that arsine was quickly metabolized to AsIII and subsequently up to DMA, with the result that the toxic effects of inorganic arsenic were added to those of arsine toxicity.

This paper presents a cross-analysis of the existing methods for modelling the use of household appliances and aims to provide insights into modelling approaches for researchers and designers. Five factors regarding appliance use modelling that have a significant impact on the modelling performance are defined: consideration of the intra/inter-household variation, consideration of the influence of socio-demographic conditions, time resolution of the data, quantification of model calibration parameters and applicability to a variety of modelling contexts. Four existing modelling methods commonly used in literature for modelling appliance use are studied to address these factors. Monitored data of 333 multi-family buildings in Japan and a Japanese time use survey are used in the cross-analysis to simulate the switch-on time profiles for the case of washing machines. The design of future research studies (including monitoring strategies, modelling and sample sizes) are discussed to further improve the ability to model home appliance use. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Summary: We report a unique case of a Japanese woman with herpetiform pemphigus (HP) who had IgG autoantibodies reactive with nondesmosomal sites of keratinocytes and presented characteristic transmission electron microscopic (TEM) findings of various‐sized vacuoles in keratinocytes without acantholysis. The patient presented with pruritic annular oedematous erythemas with small blisters lining the margins on the trunk and extremities. Histopathological examinations showed intraepidermal blisters with prominent infiltrations of eosinophils. Direct and indirect immunofluorescence tests revealed the presence of in vivo bound and circulating IgG autoantibodies to the keratinocyte cell surfaces. However, enzyme‐linked immunosorbent assays for desmoglein (Dsg) 1, Dsg3 and desmocollins 1–3 showed negative results. Immunoblotting using the full‐length human Dsg1 recombinant protein showed a positive band. TEM examination showed various‐sized vacuoles squashing the nuclei in many keratinocytes, resulting in rupture of the cells. Immunoelectron microscopic examination revealed IgG deposition over the entire keratinocyte cell surfaces, which spared the desmosomes. IgG antibodies were also present on the inside walls of the vacuoles around the nuclei of keratinocytes and on the cell surfaces of infiltrating eosinophils. This patient also had marked eosinophilia and high levels of thymus and activation‐regulated chemokine and interleukin‐5 in the serum. These results indicated a novel autoantigen on the nondesmosomal keratinocyte cell surfaces and the pathogenesis of bullous spongiotic change with inflammation in HP. Background Although a number of pathological processes resulting in amyloid deposition have been described in lichen amyloidosus ( LA), no attention has been paid to the involvement of sweat glands/ducts in the pathogenesis of LA. According to recent studies, follicular structures are usually spared in serial histological sections of LA, and deposits of amyloid are likely to be confined to areas that display xerosis, suggesting that decreases in skin wetness by sweating disturbance seem to initiate LA. Objectives To investigate whether sweating disturbance could represent an early event that triggers LA, and whether resolution of LA could be induced by restoring the sweating disturbance. Methods By using the impression mould technique, which allows an accurate quantification of individual sweat glands/ducts actively delivering sweat, we examined sweat responses to thermal stimulus in LA lesions before and after treatment with a moisturizer. Results Sweating disturbance was most profoundly detected in the 'hub' structure of the LA papule, and this disturbance due to leakage of sweat could be restored by short-term treatment with a moisturizer, particularly when used under occlusion. Conclusions This study was limited by the relatively small sample size. Treatment of LA should be primarily directed at preventing leakage of sweat into the dermis or epidermis and therefore sweat delivery to the skin surface could be made easier. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We report the design and the performance of the engineering model of the digital signal processing system called the Pulse Shape Processor (PSP) for the Soft X-ray Spectrometer (SXS) onboard the ASTRO-H satellite. The SXS employs an X-ray microcalorimeter system, in which X-ray photons are detected as a heat pulse due to photoelectric absorption. The pixelized HgTe absorbers are cooled down to 50 mK. The required energy resolution is 7 eV (FWHM) at 6 keV. Since the data link to the satellite data recorder is limited to 200 kbit s^-1, the onboard digital processor PSP plays a critical role in achieving the required resolution. The PSP is also the rate-limiting factor for other performance of the SXS, such as maximum count rate and energy range. In this paper, we show the design of the PSP, and show the performance based on a series of laboratory tests performed with the engineering models of the detector and the analog readout electronics. We found that (1) the PSP can register energy in the 0.07–18 keV band [energy range], (2) the energy resolution of the engineering model system, including the detector, analog electronics, and the PSP, is 4.8–5.7 eV at 5.9 keV [energy resolution], and (3) the PSP has sufficient processing power to handle a point-like source fainter than 0.3 Crab [maximum count rate]. These results are expected to be quite similar to those with the flight model, thus the results will be useful for the observation planning using the SXS. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Excitation spectra in bilayer quantum Hall systems at total Landau-level filling ν=2 are studied by the Hartree–Fock–Bogoliubov approximation. The systems have the spin degrees of freedom in addition to the layer degrees of freedom described in terms of pseudospin. On the excitation spectra from spin-unpolarized and pseudospin-polarized ground state, this approximation fully preserves the spin rotational symmetry and thus can give not only spin-triplet but also spin-singlet excitations systematically. Brownian dynamics simulation on model electrolyte solutions in our previous work [T. Yamaguchi et al., J. Chem. Phys. 134, 244506 (2011)] is extended to include the hydrodynamic interaction between ions, in order to examine its effects on ionic mobility in solvents of low dielectric constant. The effects of the hydrodynamic interaction are rather small as a whole, and the equivalent conductivity minimum is observed in systems with the hydrodynamic interaction. The hydrodynamic interaction increases the self-diffusion coefficient while decreases the equivalent conductivity, thereby increases the deviation from the Nernst-Einstein relationship. Based on the analysis of the time-dependent ionic mobilities, these changes are elucidated in terms of the electrophoretic and relaxation effects. It is also demonstrated that the concentration dependence of the ionic mobilities with the hydrodynamic interaction is reproduced fairly well by a theoretical calculation. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Electric field tuning of an optical stop band in a reflection spectrum is demonstrated in a synthetic opal thin film infiltrated with liquid crystal. The reflection peak of the opal shifts upon the application of the electric field, and this is based on the refractive index change caused by molecular reorientation upon application of a field. A rare case of symptomatic, multiple, intrahepatic, portosystemic venous shunts which was treated by portal vein embolization after surgical cannulation is reported. The patient, having suffered from hepatic encephalopathy, improved dramatically after embolization. This method might be the only choice of therapy for intrahepatic portosystemic shunts of this kind. The gene encoding the neural cell adhesion molecule Cntn5 (a.k.a. NB-2) has been put forward as a candidate in neurodevelopmental disorders, like autism spectrum disorder (ASD), by recent genetic findings. Little is known about the expression pattern and function of the gene, and its functional involvement in brain development has remained elusive. So far, most research has focused on its early postnatal expression in the auditory system, where the absence of Cntn5 causes abnormal responses to acoustic stimuli and a decrease in fiber density. The current study shows that the Cntn5 gene is expressed in forebrain structures during embryonic development, starting at E15.5, and that it continues to be expressed into adulthood. Sites of strong expression included the thalamus, the caudate putamen (CPu) and to a lesser extent layer Va of the cerebral cortex. Cntn5-positive thalamic nuclei include the laterodorsal (LD), ventrolateral (VL) and posterior group (Po), which contain glutamatergic neurons. Visualization of the expression pattern through the Tau-LacZ fusion protein coded by an insert in the Cntn5 gene, demonstrated that Cntn5-positive nuclei of the thalamus project to the cortex, based on co-localization with thalamocortical markers L1 and Calretinin. These results indicate that the cell adhesion functions of Cntn5 are exploited for circuit formation and connectivity in early development and for synaptic maintenance during adulthood. Subtle alterations in the formation of the thalamocortical circuit may contribute to neurodevelopmental disorders, such as ASD. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We measured the magnetoresistance in bilayer quantum Hall (QH) state at fractional filling factor ν=2/3. Surprisingly, for different QH areas and two types of hysteresis were observed by controlling the total electron density and the density difference in two layers. Two QH areas and one type of hysteresis are novel characteristic of bilayer systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]
