Pure cadmium sulfide and histidine decorated cadmium sulfide nanocomposites are prepared by the hydrothermal or solvothermal method. Scanning electron microscopy (SEM) analysis shows that the particle sizes of pure cadmium sulfide (pu/CdS) and histidine decorated cadmium sulfide prepared by the hydrothermal method (hi/CdS) range from 0.75 to 3.0 μm. However, when a solvothermal method is used, the particle size of histidine decorated cadmium sulfide (so/CdS) ranges from 50 to 300 nm. X-ray diffraction (XRD) patterns show that all samples (pu/CdS, hi/CdS and so/CdS) have a hexagonal wurtzite crystal structure but so/CdS has a poor crystallinity compared to the others. The as-prepared samples are applied to photocatalytic hydrogen production via water splitting and the results show that the highest H2 evolution rate for pu/CdS and hi/CdS are 1250 and 1950 μmol·g−1·h−1, respectively. On the other hand, the so/CdS sample has a rate of 6020 μmol·g−1·h−1, which is about five times higher than that of the pu/CdS sample. The increased specific surface area of so/CdS nanoparticles and effective charge separation by histidine molecules are attributed to the improved H2 evolution.

A system consisting of interconnected networks, or a network of networks (NoN), appears diversely in many real-world systems, including the brain. In this study, we consider NoNs consisting of heterogeneous phase oscillators and investigate how the topology of subnetworks affects the global synchrony of the network. The degree of synchrony and the effect of subnetwork topology are evaluated based on the Kuramoto order parameter and the minimum coupling strength necessary for the order parameter to exceed a threshold value, respectively. In contrast to an isolated network in which random connectivity is favorable for achieving synchrony, NoNs synchronize with weaker interconnections when the degree distribution of subnetworks is heterogeneous, suggesting the major role of the high-degree nodes. We also investigate a case in which subnetworks with different average natural frequencies are coupled to show that direct coupling of subnetworks with the largest variation is effective for synchronizing the whole system. In real-world NoNs like the brain, the balance of synchrony and asynchrony is critical for its function at various spatial resolutions. Our work provides novel insights into the topological basis of coordinated dynamics in such networks.

The authors developed a room temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) system that can deposit TiO2 on gold nanoparticles by using tetrakis(dimethylamino)titanium and plasma-excited humidified argon. The growth per cycle of TiO2 was measured to be 0.25 nm/cycle on a monitored Si sample. For applying the nanoparticle coating, the source material, i.e., gold particles, is electrostatically attached to the susceptor in the ALD system to avoid their gas transport. These particles are then mixed by a rotating scraper during the ALD process. This system allows a conformal deposition of TiO2 without the aggregation of nanoparticles. The thickness of TiO2 for shell coating is controlled by counting the number of ALD cycles. The deposition of TiO2 coating with a nanometer scale thickness on the gold nanoparticle is demonstrated in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Room-temperature atomic layer deposition (ALD) of HfO2 was examined using tetrakis (ethylmethylamino)hafnium (TEMAH) and remote plasma-excited water and oxygen. A growth rate of 0.26 nm/cycle at room temperature was achieved, and the TEMAH adsorption and its oxidization on HfO2 were investigated by multiple internal reflection infrared absorption spectroscopy. It was observed that saturated adsorption of TEMAH occurs at exposures of ~1 × 105 L (1 L = 1 × 10-6 Torr s) at room temperature, and the use of remote plasma-excited water and oxygen vapor is effective in oxidizing the TEMAH molecules on the HfO2 surface, to produce OH sites. The infrared study suggested that Hf-OH plays a role as an adsorption site for TEMAH. The reaction mechanism of room temperature HfO2 ALD is discussed in this paper. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Experiments in rat brain slice show that hyperpolarized subthalamic nucleus (STN) neurons engage in slow, regular burst firing when treated with an N-methyl-D-aspartate (NMDA) bath. A depolarization-activated inward current (DIC) has been hypothesized to contribute to this bursting activity. To explore the mechanism for STN burst firing in this setting, we augmented a previously published conductance-based computational model for single rat STN neurons to include both DIC and NMDA currents, fit to data from published electrophysiological recordings. Simulations show that with these additions, the model engages in bursting activity at <1 Hz in response to hyperpolarizing current injection and that this bursting exhibits several features observed experimentally in STN. Furthermore, a reduced model is used to show that the combination of NMDA and DIC currents, but not either alone, suffices to generate oscillations under hyperpolarizing current injection. STN neurons show enhanced burstiness in Parkinson's disease patients and experimental models of parkinsonism, and the burst mechanism studied presently could contribute to this effect. The ceramic pellets of the nominal compositions Bi0.7Ba0.3Fe1−xTixO3 (x  =  0.00–0.20) were prepared initially by standard solid state reaction technique. The pellets were then ground into micrometer-sized powders and mixed with isopropanol in an ultrasonic bath to prepare nanoparticles. The x-ray diffraction patterns demonstrate the presence of a significant number of impurity phases in bulk powder materials. Interestingly, these secondary phases were completely removed due to the sonication of these bulk powder materials for 60 minutes. The field and temperature dependent magnetization measurements exhibited significant difference between the magnetic properties of the bulk materials and their corresponding nanoparticles. We anticipate that the large difference in the magnetic behavior may be associated with the presence and absence of secondary impurity phases in the bulk materials and their corresponding nanoparticles, respectively. The leakage current density of the bulk materials was also found to suppress in the ultrasonically prepared nanoparticles compared to that of bulk counterparts. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the effect of network size on synchronized activity in living neuronal networks. Dissociated cortical neurons form synaptic connections in culture and generate synchronized spontaneous activity within 10 days in vitro. Using micropatterned surfaces to extrinsically control the size of neuronal networks, we show that synchronized activity can emerge in a network as small as 12 cells. Furthermore, a detailed comparison of small (~20 cells), medium (~100 cells), and large (~400 cells) networks reveal that synchronized activity becomes destabilized in the small networks. A computational modeling of neural activity is then employed to explore the underlying mechanism responsible for the size effect. We find that the generation and maintenance of the synchronized activity can be minimally described by: (1) the stochastic firing of each neuron in the network, (2) enhancement in the network activity in a positive feedback loop of excitatory synapses, and (3) Ca-dependent suppression of bursting activity. The model further shows that the decrease in total synaptic input to a neuron that drives the positive feedback amplification of correlated activity is a key factor underlying the destabilization of synchrony in smaller networks. Spontaneous neural activity plays a critical role in cortical information processing, and our work constructively clarifies an aspect of the structural basis behind this. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
