In this proceeding. the compositions of the T-30 turbine oil with liquid rubber. Co. Ni. Zn. Mg and Ba salts of the natural petroleum acids (NPA) boiling in the range 220–340°C and nitro compounds which are produced on the basis of C14H28 α-olefins have been investigated in different ratio and contents as metalworking fluids (MWF). The physical and chemical properties of the produced compositions have been studied. and the morphology of inhibited carbon steel surface was analyzed and characterized by using Fourier transform infrared (FTIR) and scanning electron microscopy (SEM) techniques. The effect of the temperature on the inhibition efficiency and thermodynamic parameters have also been reported. The thermal analyzer was used for the thermogravimetric analysis (TG/DTA) of the prepared MWF. The experiments have been operated with different concentrations of the inhibitor on the steel plates in condensation and environment phases in the experiment chamber.

Lake Coeur d'Alene Basin, Idaho sediments have been heavily enriched with toxic metals, including Cd, Cu, Pb, and Zn, serving as a toxic, mutagenic and carcinogenic source of contaminants. Our focus is to develop a biotic/abiotic diffusive reactive transport model to evaluate the fate, transport, exposure and effects of zinc, lead, and copper in Lake Coeur d'Alene benthic sediments. The model is structured as a multicomponent reactive transport to simulate spatial and temporal distributions of metals in the benthic sediments and their effect on microbial consortia including multiple trophic groups and microbial populations in the benthic sediments. The 1-D inorganic diffusive transport model is coupled to a microbially-mediated redox reaction network which integrates syntrophic consortium biotransformation dynamics accounting for product and metal toxicity inhibition under a diffusive transport regime. The model simulates the mobilization of heavy metals initially sorbed onto hydrous ferric oxides through microbial reductive dissolution of Fe(III) minerals under redox disequilibrium conditions with simultaneous biogenic sulfide production, forming soluble metal (bi)sulfide complexes and insoluble metal sulfide minerals, and the effects of these metals on benthic microbial communities via accounting of dose, where dose is expressed in a novel fashion as a structural variable in the population dynamics of the microbial consortia.

Background: To measure the effects of real-time visualisation during urethrocystoscopy on pain in patients who underwent ambulatory urethrocystoscopy. Methods: An observational study was designed. From June 2012 to June 2013 patients who had ambulatory urethrocystoscopy participated in the study. In order to measure pain perception we used a numeric rating scale (NRS) 0 to 10. Additional data was collected including gender, reason for intervention, use of a rigid or a flexible instrument and whether the patient had had urethrocystoscopy before. Results: 185 patients were evaluated. 125 patients preferred to watch their urethrocystoscopy on a real-time video screen, 60 patients did not. There was no statistically relevant difference in pain perception between those patients who watched their urethrocystoscopy on a real-time video screen and those who did not (p = 0.063). However, men who were allowed to watch their flexible urethrocystoscopy experienced significantly less pain, than those who did not (p = 0.007). No such effects could be measured for rigid urethrocystoscopy (p = 0.317). Furthermore, women experienced significantly higher levels of pain during the urethrocystoscopy than men (p = 0.032). Conclusions: Visualisation during urethrocystoscopy procedures in general does not significantly decrease pain in patients. Nevertheless, men who undergo flexible urethrocystoscopy should be offered to watch their procedure in real-time on a video screen. Background: Fragile X syndrome (FXS) is the most common inherited form of intellectual disability. Since the identification of the responsible gene ( FMR1) and its protein (FMRP), there has been enormous progress in both clinical and pathogenetic research on the neurobehavioural aspects of the condition. However, studies regarding other medical problems anticipated in individuals with FXS are limited. A multidisciplinary study evaluating various causes of morbidity in the same group has not been published yet. Methods: Twenty-four boys with FXS full mutation were recruited out of a larger group of 103 diagnosed in one centre over the past 10 years. Ear nose and throat, eye and cardiac examinations were performed in addition to routine cognitive, behavioural, neurological and speech and language assessments. Results: The average IQ score was 49.8 +/- 20 (range 25-90). There were four patients (18%) with IQ above 70. Using DSM-IV, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder was diagnosed in five boys out of 22 examined (23%), while 32% were diagnosed with pervasive developmental disorder. The seizure frequency was 17%. A psychiatric disorder was diagnosed in six out of eight boys with electroencephalogram abnormalities (75%). Minimal conductive hearing loss was found in five (5/22) patients. There was significant delay in both expressive and receptive language skills. Ocular findings were refractive errors (13%) and strabismus (4. 4%). Mitral valve prolapsus (MVP) was observed in 3/22 (13.7%) patients and aortic annulus dilatation was present in 2/22 (9%) patients. Conclusions: Frequency of psychiatric diagnoses made with DSM-IV were in parallel to those reported in the literature. Comorbidity of seizures and psychiatric disorders was noteworthy. The percentage of 'high-functioning' full mutation males supports the previous observations. Ear nose and throat and eye examination revealed remarkably lower prevalence of abnormal findings than reported. MVP was slightly less frequent compared with the single study in the literature. Age at the time of examination had an effect on the outcome of cardiac evaluation. These findings will guide us in future management of the group of patients followed in our institution. Background: To determine the conditions that prevented transplant in patients referred to our center due to end-stage lung disease., Study Design: Descriptive study., Place and Duration of the Study: Department of lung transplant clinic, Koşuyolu High Specialization Education and Research Hospital, Istanbul, Turkey, from December 2017 to January 2022., Methods: Patients with end-stage lung disease referred to our clinic were retrospectively evaluated with regard to reasons for exclusion, diagnosis, and demographic data. The Karnofsky Performance Status scoring scale was used to measure the functional status of the patients., Results: A total of 311 patients were evaluated during the study period. The mean age was 44.2 (range 4-73) years. There were 207 (66.6%) male patients. The most common indications were idiopathic interstitial pneumonia in 104 (33.4%) patients, chronic obstructive pulmonary disease in 53 (17%) patients, bronchiectasis in 49 (15.7%) patients, and cystic fibrosis in 28 (9%) patients. Of the patients, 106 (34%) were not appropriate candidates for a lung transplant. The most common reasons for refusal were preventable situations such as activity limitation and poor performance in 53 (50%) patients, weight in 49 (46.2%) patients, and smoking in 10 (9.4%) patients., Conclusion: Impaired performance status was the most common cause of lung transplant exclusion. Weight and smoking were preventable causes of exclusion. Implementing pulmonary rehabilitation in very few patients was the most important handicap. It is believed that providing optimal treatment with a multidisciplinary approach and timely referral to transplant centers will significantly reduce the reasons for exclusion. Determination of plasma uracil was reported as a method for evaluation of Dihydropyrimidine dehydrogenase (DPD) activity that is highly demanded to ensure the safe administration of 5-fluorouracil (5-FU)-based therapies to cancer patients. This work reports the development of a simple electroanalytical method based on adsorptive stripping square wave voltammetry (AdSWV) at mercury film-coated glassy carbon electrode (MF/GCE) for the highly sensitive determination of uracil in biological fluids that can be used for diagnosis of decreased DPD activity. Due to the formation of the Hg II -Uracil complex at the electrode surface, the accuracy of the measurement was not affected by the complicated matrices in biological fluids including human serum, plasma, and urine. The high sensitivity of the developed method results in a low limit of detection (≈1.3 nM) in human plasma samples, falling below the practical cut-off level of 15 ng mL -1 (≈0.14 μM). Raw milk is considered a high-risk source of Campylobacter due to faecal contamination from healthy cattle and farm environments, thus linking raw milk consumption to global outbreaks. Detection of Campylobacter in raw milk poses challenges due to low contamination levels and antibacterial properties of the milk. Culture-based protocols for Campylobacter detection in milk vary, mainly with regard to pH adjustment and the choice of enrichment broth. This European collaborative study was organised by the EU Reference Laboratory (EURL) for Campylobacter together with eight EU National Reference Laboratories (NRL) for Campylobacter with the purpose to evaluate methods for culture-based detection of Campylobacter in raw cow's milk. The study was divided into two parts, an interlaboratory part and an intralaboratory part, both organised around the same two protocols. The aim of protocol 1 was to evaluate the impact of pH adjustment and storage of the milk on the culturability of Campylobacter over time. Aliquots of the spiked milk were adjusted either to pH 7.0 or pH 7.6 or left unadjusted. The milk was stored up to 48 h at refrigerated temperature and Campylobacter was quantified according to ISO 10272-2 on day 0, 1 and 2. The aim of protocol 2 was to evaluate which enrichment broth, Bolton broth (BB) or Preston broth (PB), showed highest sensitivity in detection of Campylobacter. The spiked milk was enriched in BB and PB as described in ISO 10272-1:2017 or ISO 10272-1:2017/Amd1.2023. In the interlaboratory part, each milk batch was collected locally by each participating NRL/EURL and inoculated with the same Campylobacter strain. In the follow-up intralaboratory part, the EURL-Campylobacter repeated the tests in protocol 1 and 2 but used different Campylobacter strains and strains subjected to thermal stress prior to inoculation. The results show that pH adjustment of raw milk has a negligible impact on culture-based detection of Campylobacter, regardless of strain and level of environmental stress. The composition of milk and properties of the inoculated strain influence culture-based detection of Campylobacter over storage time, and strains subjected to additional stress prior to inoculation in milk are reduced in culturability much faster than the same strains prepared under normal conditions. Objective: Interstitial lung diseases (ILDs) are diverse pulmonary disorders marked by diffuse lung inflammation and fibrosis. The variability in characteristics and treatment approaches complicates diagnosis and management. In advanced cases requiring transplantation, determining indications and selecting suitable candidates presents additional challenges., Methods: Of all patients with non-IPF ILD between December 2016 to December 2022 were analyzed retrospectively. Patients were categorized into two groups: transplanted patients and deceased patients on the waiting list. Clinical data and survival outcomes were compared between groups., Results: Of the 43 patients, 20 underwent lung transplantation while 23 died awaiting transplantation. Waiting list mortality was 53.4%, with median waiting times similar between groups (3 months for transplant patients and 6 months for those on the waiting list). There were no significant differences between groups in age, gender, height, BMI, 6-minute walk test (6MWT), or forced vital capacity (FVC). The prevalence of pulmonary hypertension (PH) was 76.7% in right heart catheterizations, similar in both groups. One single and 19 bilateral lung transplants were performed. Overall, 13 of the 20 patients survived to discharge from the hospital. One-year mortality was 7/20 (35%). The median follow-up was 34 months, with a 1-year conditional survival of 90.9% at 3 years and 70.7% at 5 years., Conclusions: This study underscores the importance of further research into non-IPF ILDs. Abstract: This study investigated the prevalence and risk factors of probable posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD), depression, and complicated grief among 529 adults residing in a container city, 4 months after the 2023 earthquakes in Türkiye. Participants were assessed using the PTSD Checklist for Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, 5th Edition, the Hamilton Depression Scale, and the Inventory of Complicated Grief. The prevalence rates of probable PTSD, depression, and complicated grief were 21.4%, 15.9%, and 64.7%, respectively. Logistic regression analyses indicated that PTSD was significantly associated with the loss of a loved one, fear of future earthquakes, and decreased perceived life control. Similarly, depression was associated with being trapped under debris, experiencing fear during the earthquake, and reduced perceived life control. These findings suggest that individuals presenting these risk factors warrant closer follow-up for potential psychological issues. Objective: To measure the effects kangaroo mother care (KMC) on the regional cerebral oxygen saturation (rSO 2 ) measured with near-infrared spectroscopy (NIRS) in premature infants and to study the physiological stability and comfort of the infants during such interventions., Design: This was a prospective, single-centered, single-blind, 2-arm, parallel-group randomized controlled trial conducted., Settings: The study was carried out in a tertiary neonatal intensive care unit in Medical Faculty Hospital in Konya/Turkey., Participants: Premature infants born between 24 and 36 +6 weeks. Participants were randomly assigned to one of two groups: kangaroo care (n = 20) and control groups (n = 20). The rSO 2 , oxygen saturation (%SpO 2 ), heart rate (HR), respiratory rate, body temperature, and comfort levels of the infants were evaluated in three stages., Findings: In the 60th min measurement of the intervention group, rSO 2 , body temperature, heart rate, respiratory rate, and, comfort level, the comfort level was found to be higher and significant in the 30th and 60th min measurements (p < 0.001). In the intervention group, the rSO 2 (p < 0.001), body temperature (p < 0.001), HR (p < 0.001), SpO 2 (p < 0.001), respiratory rate (p < 0.001), and comfort levels (p < 0.001) scores with the control group and the group × time interaction was significant., Key Conclusions: KMC moderately increased the rSO 2 levels and also created a moderate effect size on the physiological parameters and comfort levels of the newborns, which implicates its short-term benefits for premature infants., Practice Implications: KMC may be beneficial in stabilizing rSO 2 and physiological parameters and increasing comfort in premature infants. Aim: This study aimed to analyse the relationship between fear of COVID-19 and hand hygiene beliefs and practices of surgical nurses., Method: This article is a descriptive correlational study. It was conducted between February and May 2021 with 306 surgical nurses working at public and private hospitals in Northern Cyprus. A personal information form, Fear of COVID-19 Scale, Hand Hygiene Belief Scale and Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory were used for data collection., Results: Of the participants in the study, 25.41% were 29 years old or younger and 85.15% were female. The mean scores obtained from the Fear of COVID-19 Scale, Hand Hygiene Belief Scale and the Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory were 23.12 ± 8.03, 81.33 ± 7.67 and 69.15 ± 1.94, respectively. The Fear of COVID-19 Scale scores were negatively correlated with the Hand Hygiene Belief Scale scores and positively correlated with the Hand Hygiene Practices Inventory scores., Conclusion: Hand hygiene practices were better for nurses with higher level of COVID-19 fear. Objective: This study was conducted to identify the diagnostic value of carotid stump pressure for determining the need for a carotid artery shunt in patients undergoing carotid artery endarterectomy., Materials and Methods: Carotid stump pressure was prospectively measured in all carotid artery endarterectomies performed under local anesthesia between January 2020 and April 2022. The shunt was selectively used when neurological symptoms appeared after carotid cross-clamping. Carotid stump pressure was compared between patients who needed shunting and those who did not. Demographic and clinical characteristics, hematological and biochemical parameters, and carotid stump pressure of the patients with and without shunts were statistically compared. To determine the optimal cutoff value and diagnostic performance of carotid stump pressure for identifying the patients who need a shunt, receiver operating characteristic analysis was performed., Results: Overall, 102 patients (61 men and 41 women) who underwent carotid artery endarterectomy under local anesthesia were included, with an age range of 51-88 years. A carotid artery shunt was used in 16 (8 men and 8 women) patients. The carotid stump pressure values of the patients with a shunt were lower than those without a shunt (median (min-max): 42 (20-55) vs 51 (20-104), p < 0.0006). In the receiver operating characteristic curve analysis performed to determine the need for a shunt, the optimal cutoff value of carotid stump pressure was ≤48 mmHg, sensitivity was 93.8%, and specificity was 61.6% (area under the curve: 0.773, p < 0.0001)., Conclusion: Carotid stump pressure has sufficient diagnostic power to determine the need for a shunt, but it cannot be used alone in the clinical setting. Stroke is a disease with high mortality and morbidity that not only causes weakness in the extremities, loss of balance, and disturbances in trunk and postural control, but also affects respiratory function. The aim of this study was to investigate the relationship between trunk and postural control and pulmonary function in subacute stroke patients. Herein, 32 volunteer patients who were diagnosed with hemiplegia by a competent physician after unilateral hemorrhagic or ischemic stroke and who met the inclusion criteria participated in the study. Functional independence of the participants was evaluated using the Modified Rankin Scale (mRS) and their cognitive function was assessed with the Standardized Mini Mental State Examination. Respiratory function was evaluated with spirometric measurements, inspiratory muscle strength was evaluated with intraoral pressure measurements, trunk control was evaluated using the Trunk Impairment Scale (TIS), postural control was evaluated using the Postural Assessment Scale for Stroke Patients (PASS-T), computerized postural sway evaluation, and static posture analysis. A significant correlation was found between the TIS scores and inspiratory muscle strength (p < 0.05). A significant correlation was also found between the PASS-T scores and inspiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function (p < 0.05). All of the COP parameters measured were significantly correlated with the PEF(L/s) and FEF 25-75 (L/s) (p < 0.05). In conclusion, this study showed that trunk and postural control are associated with inspiratory muscle strength and pulmonary function. It is recommended that evaluation of trunk and postural control and respiratory functions, as well as exercise training to improve these parameters, should be included in rehabilitation programs for individuals with stroke., (© 2024. The aim of this study is to provide a test that allows for evaluation of both semantic memory (SM) and episodic memory (EM). The study sought to examine psychometric characteristics of the Modified Dead-Alive Test (M-DAT) in patients with neurocognitive disorders and the healthy elderly (HE). The M-DAT consists of 45 names of celebrities who have died in the remote past (15), died in the last five years (15), and are still alive (15), and participants are asked whether they are alive or dead. The M-DAT performances of patients with Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders-5 (DSM-5) major neurocognitive disorder due to Alzheimer's Disease (MND-AD) ( n  = 69) and patients with minor neurocognitive disorder (MiND) ( n  = 27) who were admitted to a geriatric psychiatry clinic and healthy controls (HC) ( n  = 29) were compared. Age and level of education were taken as covariates, and an analysis of covariance (ANCOVA) was performed since the MND-AD group was older and less educated. The MND-AD group had lower performance in EM and SM scores of the M-DAT. M-DAT failed to differentiate between MiND and HE. Both subscale scores of the M-DAT were associated with other neuropsychological test performances as well as the level of education. The results suggest that M-DAT is a valid and reliable tool that examines both EM and SM performances. M-DAT is an alternative for the assessment of SM evaluated by verbal fluency or naming tests. Evaluating EM and SM together is an important advantage; however, M-DAT is influenced by education, and the items require updating.

Molecularly imprinted polymers (MIPs) are artificial receptors equipped with selective recognition sites for target molecules. One of the most promising strategies for protein MIPs relies on the exploitation of short surface-exposed protein fragments, termed epitopes, as templates to imprint binding sites in a polymer scaffold for a desired protein. However, the lack of high-resolution structural data of flexible surface-exposed regions challenges the selection of suitable epitopes. Here, we addressed this drawback by developing a polyscopoletin-based MIP that recognizes recombinant proteins via imprinting of the widely used Strep-tag II affinity peptide (Strep-MIP). Electrochemistry, surface-sensitive IR spectroscopy, and molecular dynamics simulations were employed to ensure an utmost control of the Strep-MIP electrosynthesis. The functionality of this novel platform was verified with two Strep-tagged enzymes: an O 2 -tolerant [NiFe]-hydrogenase, and an alkaline phosphatase. The use of natural products to treat illness has gained increasing scientific and public interest. Not only to ensure quality control but also to verify their efficacy as active ingredients in various pharmaceutical formulations, the evaluation of natural products is of paramount importance. In this field, analytical methods like spectroscopy, electrophoresis, and chromatography are essential and are constantly being improved upon. Chromatographic techniques are essential for determining the quality and authenticity of natural products. Moreover, strict adherence to internationally recognized norms in validating analytical procedures guarantees the accuracy and dependability of results. Continual research initiatives are essential for tackling issues like adulteration and enhancing customer trust in natural products. Recent progress in adjuvant immunotherapy offers hope for improving disease-free survival in high-risk bladder cancer (BC) and renal cell carcinoma (RCC). This review focuses on key trials such as CheckMate 274 and KEYNOTE-564, which show promising results with nivolumab in BC and pembrolizumab in RCC, including a 30% reduction in progression risk. Pembrolizumab also demonstrated overall survival (OS) benefit in RCC. The review also explores the potential of circulating tumor DNA (ctDNA) as a biomarker for better therapy selection and patient stratification. Inflammatory mediators that infiltrate the corneal stroma after corneal infections, trauma or refractive surgery can trigger the transformation of corneal keratocytes into myofibroblasts, resulting in highly irregular collagen deposition and subsequently corneal scarring. Mesenchymal stem cells (MSCs) can be used as therapeutic agents to regenerate corneal and conjunctival tissue damage, regulate inflammation, and reduce the development of limbal stem cell failure. The use of MSC-derived exosomes as a cell-free therapeutic vector is a novel therapeutic approach. This study aimed to assess the effect of exosomes obtained from melatonin (Mel)-treated human limbal mesenchymal stem cells (hLMSCs) on naïve hLMSCs and to determine their influence on the antifibrotic and pro-regenerative pathways involved in corneal scarring. hLMSCs were treated with varying concentrations of Mel, followed by isolation and characterization of the procured exosomes (Mel-prExos). These exosomes were added to the cell culture media of naïve hLMSCs to examine their antifibrotic and pro-regenerative effects. The expression of miR-155, miR-29, TGFβ1, TGFβ3, PPARγ, and α-SMA miRNAs and genes were compared between Mel-treated hLMSCs and Mel-prExo-treated hLMSCs by using real-time PCR. We found that at 1 μM Mel and in the presence of Mel-prExos, TGFβ1 was expressed 0.001-fold, while TGFβ3 was expressed 0.6-fold. miR-29 expression was increased 38-fold in the control-Exo group compared to that in the control group. Changes in TGFβ1/β3 and α-SMA expression are associated with miR-29 and miR-155. This approach could prove beneficial for ocular surface tissue engineering applications., (© 2024 The Author(s). Nanostructured metal oxides (NMOs) provide electrical properties such as high surface-to-volume ratio, reaction activity, and good adsorption strength. Furthermore, they serve as a conductive substrate for the immobilization of biomolecules, exhibiting notable biological activity. Capitalizing on these characteristics, they find utility in the development of various electrochemical biosensing devices, elevating the sensitivity and selectivity of such diagnostic platforms. In this review, different types of NMOs, including zinc oxide (ZnO), titanium dioxide (TiO 2 ), iron (II, III) oxide (Fe 3 O 4 ), nickel oxide (NiO), and copper oxide (CuO); their synthesis methods; and how they can be integrated into biosensors used for medical diagnosis are examined. It also includes a detailed table for the last 10 years covering the morphologies, analysis techniques, analytes, and analytical performances of electrochemical biosensors developed for medical diagnosis.

Purpose: Idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss (ISSHL) can cause acute damage not only to the auditory function, but also to the vestibular function in addition to damage to the hearing function. The aim of this study was to perform vestibular assessment using caloric test and video head impulse test in patients with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing loss. In addition, to evaluate the relationship of dizziness with vestibular tests and post-treatment responses of vestibular tests., Methods: This is an observational, longitudinal and prospective study, including patients diagnosed with idiopathic sudden sensorineural hearing. Patients were divided into two groups according to the presence of vestibular complaints at presentation: Group 1: Patients with vestibular complaints, Group 2: Patients without vestibular complaints. All subjects underwent pure tone audiometry (PTA) testing, cold caloric test and video head impulse test (vHIT) during their admission and on the 10th day, 3rd month, and 1st year of their follow-up outpatient clinic controls. A unilateral weakness (UW) in the caloric test response was quantified according to the Jongkees formula., Results: A positive and significant relationship was found between the degree of hearing loss according to the ASHA criteria pre-treatment and the level of improvement created according to Siegel criteria at the 10th day, 3rd month, 1st year after treatment (respectively p = 0.001, p = 0.001, p < 0.001). When both short-term and long-term results were evaluated after treatment, a positive improvement in the degree of hearing loss was observed. A statistically significant difference was observed between Groups 1 and 2 when the pre-treatment, at 10 days, 3 months and 1 year after treatment the caloric test UW value was compared (respectively p = 0.020, p = 0.004, p = 0.004, p = 0.004). A statistically significant difference was observed between Groups 1 and 2 when the pre-treatment, at 10 days, 3 months and 1 year after treatment vHIT lateral canal VOR value was compared (respectively p = 0.000, p = 0.001, p = 0.000, p = 0.004). When both short-term and long-term results were evaluated after treatment, a positive improvement was observed in both caloric test results and lateral vHIT VOR values. Pre-treatment, post-treatment 10th day, 3rd month, 1st year vHIT anterior and posterior canal VOR values were found to be VOR˃0.8 in all patients. No difference was observed in anterior and posterior canal VOR values., Conclusion: Vertigo in patients with ISSHL "as objectively confirmed through caloric testing and vHIT" can be considered a sign of severe cochlear damage. Our study demonstrated a significantly increased risk of vestibular affect in patients with ISSHL, especially in the presence of vertigo. Thus, we conclude that the focus in ISSHL should not only be on the cochlea but also on the vestibular system., (© 2023. Objective: Point-of-care ultrasound (POCUS) has been reported to reduce radiation exposure and has been shown to be a reliable bedside technique to confirm endotracheal tube (ETT) placement, but evidence in neonates is still limited. The aim of this study was to compare the effectiveness and reliability of POCUS performed by a neonatologist, as an alternative to chest radiography (CXR) for the optimal position of ETT., Study Design: Newborns who underwent intubation were included in this prospective observational study. The CXR was used to evaluate the position of the ETT tip and categorized into three groups: above the T1, between the T1 and T3, and below the T3 vertebra. An experienced neonatologist measured the distance between the ETT tip and the upper border of the aortic arch from the suprasternal notch with ultrasonography (US). A 5 to 10 mm measurement was considered as the optimal distance, and the position was classified into three categories: correct, high, and deep., Results: Among 91 measurements performed on 63 intubated patients with US, 73 (80%) were within the 5 to 10 mm range (correct position). Of these, 61 (92.4%) were determined to be between T1 and 3 vertebrae in CXR. There was no significant difference between the two methods, and the US had an excellent ability to distinguish the correct position of the ETT. Prostate cancer is a major planetary health challenge wherein new ways of thinking drug discovery and therapeutics innovation are much needed. Numerous studies have shown that autophagy inhibition holds a significant role as an adjunctive intervention in prostate cancer. Hydroxychloroquine (HCQ) has gained considerable attention due to its established role as an autophagy inhibitor across diverse cancer types, but its proteomics landscape and systems biology in prostate cancer are currently lacking in the literature. This study reports the proteomic responses to HCQ in prostate cancer cells, namely, androgen-dependent LNCaP and androgen-independent PC3 cells. Differentially expressed proteins and proteome in HCQ-treated cells were determined by label-free quantification with nano-high-performance liquid chromatography and tandem mass spectrometry (nHPLC-MS/MS), and harnessing bioinformatics tools. In PC3 cells, there was a marked shift toward metabolic reprogramming, highlighted by an upregulation of mitochondrial proteins in oxidative phosphorylation and tricarboxylic acid cycle, suggesting an adaptive mechanism to maintain energy production under therapeutic stress. In contrast, LNCaP cells prioritized proteostasis and cell cycle regulation, indicating a more conservative adaptation strategy. To the best of our knowledge, this study is the first to demonstrate the differential responses of prostate cancer cells to autophagy inhibition by HCQ, suggesting that a combination therapy approach, targeting distinct pathways in androgen-independent and androgen-dependent cells, could represent a promising treatment strategy. Moreover, the varied proteomic responses observed between these cell lines underscore the importance of personalized medicine in cancer therapy. Future translational and clinical research on HCQ and prostate cancer are called for.

Wild cardoon (Cynara cardunculus var. sylvestris) is the ancestor of many cultivated forms, including globe artichoke (C. cardunculus var. scolymus). Four organs (receptacles, bracts, leaves and stems) of wild and cultivated artichokes (organic and conventional) were assessed considering their individual phenolic constituents (HPLC-DAD), total phenol-flavonoid content, and pharmaceutical potentials (antibacterial and antioxidant). All three sources of artichokes had the highest concentration of 1,3-dicaffeoylquinic acid (cynarin) in their receptacles and cultivated artichoke receptacles had more cynarin than wild one. On the other hand, receptacles of wild cardoon had the highest 1,5-dicaffeoylquinic acid and caffeic acid than the cultivated ones. Generally, receptacles, stems and leaves of wild cardoon were superior to both cultivated artichokes on antioxidant potential, and total phenol-flavonoid content. The rise in total phenolic content can be attributed to an increase in antioxidant capacity in all artichoke organs. Only the leaves of all different artichokes showed antibacterial activity against Gram-positive bacteria. The investigated wild cardoon was believed to be a true ancestor since a comparison of wild and cultivated varieties revealed similar trends in terms of phenolic profile and biological properties. Purpose: Green Fluorescent Protein is widely used as a cellular marker tool, but its potential influence on cells has been questioned. Although the potential off-target effects of GFP on tumor cells have been studied to some extent, the findings at the molecular level are insufficient to explain the effect of GFP expression on the tumorigenic capacity of cancer cells. Here, we aimed to investigate the effect of GFP expression on the tumorigenicity of PC3 prostate cancer cells., Methods: Using GFP-expressing and wild-type PC-3 cells, xenograft models were generated in athymic BALB/C mice. To identify differentially expressed proteins, the change in cells proteome was investigated by label-free quantification with nano-high performance liquid chromatography to tandem mass spectrometry (nHPLC-MS/MS). Proteins that showed significantly altered expression levels were evaluated using the bioinformatics tools., Results: Unlike the wild-type PC-3 cells, GFP-expressing cells failed to develop tumor. Comparative proteome analysis of GFP-expressing cells with WT PC-3 cells revealed a total of 216 differentially regulated proteins, of which 98 were upregulated and 117 were downregulated., Conclusion: Upon GFP expression, differential changes in several pathways including the immune system, translational machinery, energy metabolism, elements of cytoskeletal and VEGF signaling pathway were observed. Objectives: To investigate the relationship between cultural intelligence and career and work adaptability among nursing students., Methods: The descriptive, cross-sectional study was conducted at Kilis 7 Aralık University Nursing Department in Turkey from April to May 2019, and comprised nursing students of either gender. Data was gathered using Cultural Intelligence Scale and Career and Work Adaptability Questionnaire. Data was analysed using SPSS24., Results: Of the 277 subjects, 162(58.5%) were females and 115(41.5%) were males. The overall mean age was 21.21±1.81 years. The mean Cultural Intelligence Scale score was 95.17±18.16. The mean Career and Work Adaptability Questionnaire score was 115.69±19.38. There was a positive correlation between the total scores and subscale scores of both the scales (r=598, p<0.001). The student's father's occupation, desire to work overseas, feeling like a good fit for nursing, and feeling prepared for professional life significantly affected cultural intelligence (p<0.05). The student's father's occupation significantly affected career and work adaptability (p=0.001)., Conclusion: There was a positive correlation between the total scores and subscale scores of Cultural Intelligence Scale and Career and Work Adaptability Questionnaire.

Objectives: This study aimed to determine the effect of nurse-based breastfeeding support during the immediate postpartum period on mothers' breastfeeding self-efficacy levels., Methods: A quasi-experimental study was conducted with 256 mothers in the immediate postpartum period (128 in the intervention group who received nurse-based breastfeeding support and routine care and 128 in the control group who received routine care) during February-June 2018. Data were collected using the Mother-Infant Data Sheet, the Breastfeeding Self-Efficacy Scale-Short Form (BSES-SF), and the Nurse-Parent Support Tool (NPST)., Results: BSES-SF and NPST mean scores of mothers in the intervention group were higher than those of mothers in the control group (p < 0.01). While the association between breastfeeding self-efficacy and nurse support was low in the control group (0.271), it was rather high in the intervention group (0.693) (p < 0.05). It was found that nurse support explained 48% of the variance in breastfeeding self-efficacy in the intervention group, but only 7.3% of the variance in breastfeeding self-efficacy in the control group., Conclusions for Practice: The results of the study indicate that nurse support for mothers in the immediate postpartum period based on breastfeeding training has a positive impact on breastfeeding self-efficacy., (© 2023. Purpose: To evaluate the effect of preoperative information based on written documents on anxiety levels and the family-centered care of parents of pediatric patients who had ambulatory surgery., Design and Methods: It is a randomized controlled study. Parents were randomly divided into two groups as intervention (n = 30) and control (n = 30). Parents in the intervention group were given written document and verbal information the day before the surgery. A brochure was prepared in accordance with the verbal information describing the perioperative process as a written document. The control group was given only verbal information. Parental State Anxiety Inventory (SAI) and Family Centered Care Assessment Scale (FCCAS) were assessed before and within 1-2 h after surgery, with verbal information based on written documentation. Data were evaluated with Student's t-test for dependent and independent groups and mixed design ANOVA test for time×group interaction. Partial eta square (η2) was calculated for the effect size., Results: There was a significant difference between the post-intervention pretest and posttest SAI and FCCAS scores of the parents in the intervention and control groups (p < 0.05). Time group interactions anxiety and family-centered care (p < 0.001) scores had a significant and large effect size., Conclusion: Verbal information supported by written documentation before pediatric ambulatory surgery can reduce parental SAI and increase parental FCCAS more than standard care., Practice Implications: Providing written document-based information to parents before surgery may be beneficial in reducing SAI and increasing FCCAS. This study analyzed data collected on a slaughterhouse from 2017 to 2021, belonging to five hundred and twenty one Anatolian water buffalos from different farms located in Edirne, Istanbul, and Kirklareli. Specifically, it aimed to determine the factors affecting the carcass weights and slaughter ages of the Anatolian water buffalos. The results of the study showed that the slaughter age of the buffalos was a significant determinant of their carcass weights. Meanwhile, the sex, slaughter year, and slaughter season affected the carcass weight. Differences were observed for the slaughter age regarding the sex and farm origin. Since the pricing system in local markets is based on the buffalo carcass weight, the findings of this study could be essential for farmers when determining their fattening strategies.
