Quantum defects are atomic defects in materials that provide resources to construct quantum information devices such as single-photon emitters and spin qubits. Recently, two-dimensional (2D) materials gained prominence as a host of quantum defects with many attractive features derived from their atomically thin and layered material formfactor. In this Perspective, we discuss first-principles computational methods and challenges to predict the spin and electronic properties of quantum defects in 2D materials. We focus on the open quantum system nature of the defects and their interaction with external parameters such as electric field, magnetic field, and lattice strain. We also discuss how such prediction and understanding can be used to guide experimental studies, ranging from defect identification to tuning of their spin and optical properties. This Perspective provides significant insights into the interplay between the defect, the host material, and the environment, which will be essential in the pursuit of ideal two-dimensional quantum defect platforms. High-resolution angle-resolved photoemission spectroscopy (ARPES) was used to study the surface electronic structure of Nb-doped SrTiO3 (STO) single crystals prepared using a variety of surface preparations. ARPES measurements show that simple degreasing with subsequent anneal in vacuum is not an adequate surface preparation of STO, rather, preparations consisting of etching with buffered HF or HCl, and to a lesser extent, simple water leaching resulted in surfaces with much less disorder. A non-dispersing, mid-gap state was found ∼800 meV above the top of the valence band for samples which underwent etching. This mid-gap state is not present for vacuum-annealed and water-leached samples, as well as for STO thin films grown using molecular beam epitaxy. Theoretical modeling using density functional theory suggests that this mid-gap state is not related to the SrO- and TiO2-terminated surfaces, but rather, is due to a partial hydrogenation of the STO surface that occurs during etching. Cobalt oxide (CoO) films are grown epitaxially on Si(001) by atomic layer deposition (ALD) using a thin (1.6 nm) buffer layer of strontium titanate (STO) grown by molecular beam epitaxy. The ALD growth of CoO films is done at low temperature (170-180 °C), using cobalt bis(diisopropylacetamidinate) and water as co-reactants. Reflection high-energy electron diffraction, X-ray diffraction, and cross-sectional scanning transmission electron microscopy are performed to characterize the crystalline structure of the films. The CoO films are found to be crystalline as-deposited even at the low growth temperature with no evidence of Co diffusion into Si. The STO-buffered Si (001) is used as a template for ALD growth of relatively thicker epitaxial STO and TiO2 films. Epitaxial and polycrystalline CoO films are then grown by ALD on the STO and TiO2 layers, respectively, creating thin-film heterostructures for photoelectrochemical testing. Both types of heterostructures, CoO/STO/Si and CoO/TiO2/STO/Si, demonstrate water photooxidation activity under visible light illumination. In-situ X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy is used to measure the band alignment of the two heterojunctions, CoO/STO and CoO/TiO2. We report the innovative fabrication of a high density array of multiferroic BiFeO3 (BFO) nanoislands on a conductive substrate in a large area. The anodic aluminum oxide (AAO) template has widely been used to fabricate highly arranged nanostructures, because of easy control of pore size and perfect hexagonal pore packing. The existing AAO mask-assisted pulsed laser deposition (PLD) method is limited to fabricating a nanoisland array in a small area. To supplement the shortcoming of this method, a thick AAO membrane in a large area was electrochemically detached and floated on polystyrene (PS) film without crack. Then, a nanoporous polystyrene (PS) template was prepared by dry etching with the thick AAO membrane mask, followed by spin coating of the BFO precursor on the PS template. After removing the PS template at high temperature, we prepared a high density array of multiferroic BFO nanoislands in a large area epitaxially grown on an STO:Nb (100) substrate. A high density array of BFO nanoislands in a large area showed both ferroelectricity of individual nanoislands obtained by piezoresponse force microscopy (PFM) and macroscopic magnetism measured by a superconducting quantum interference device (SQUID) based magnetic property measurement system (MPMS). A high density array of BFO nanoislands could be employed as a next-generation memory device capable of electric writing and magnetic reading (or vice versa). [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The growth kinetics of polymer thin films prepared by plasma-based deposition method were explored using atomic force microscopy. The growth behavior of the first layer of the polythiophene somewhat differs from that of the other layers because the first layer is directly deposited on the substrate, whereas the other layers are deposited on the polymer itself. After the deposition of the first layer, each layer is formed with a cycle of 15 s. The present work represents the growth kinetics of the plasma-polymerized films and could be helpful for further studies on growth kinetics in other material systems as well as for applications of plasma-polymerized thin films. Comparison between single- and the poly-crystalline structures provides essential information on the role of long-range translational symmetry and grain boundaries. In particular, by comparing single- and poly-crystalline transition metal oxides (TMOs), one can study intriguing physical phenomena such as electronic and ionic conduction at the grain boundaries, phonon propagation, and various domain properties. In order to make an accurate comparison, however, both single- and poly-crystalline samples should have the same quality, e.g., stoichiometry, crystallinity, thickness, etc. Here, by studying the surface properties of atomically flat poly-crystalline SrTiO3 (STO), we propose an approach to simultaneously fabricate both single- and poly-crystalline epitaxial TMO thin films on STO substrates. In order to grow TMOs epitaxially with atomic precision, an atomically flat, single-terminated surface of the substrate is a prerequisite. We first examined (100), (110), and (111) oriented single-crystalline STO surfaces, which required different annealing conditions to achieve atomically flat surfaces, depending on the surface energy. A poly-crystalline STO surface was then prepared at the optimum condition for which all the domains with different crystallographic orientations could be successfully flattened. Based on our atomically flat poly-crystalline STO substrates, we envision expansion of the studies regarding the TMO domains and grain boundaries. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We have demonstrated that domain switching in ferroelectric copolymer films can be significantly affected by humidity. With increasing relative humidity (RH), we observed larger domains with highly irregular boundaries as a result of lateral spreading of the tip-induced electric field that originates from water adsorption. Fractal dimension study of irregular domains reveals that the fractal dimension is higher in cases where the RH is higher. The results show that the RH is one of the major switching parameters in ferroelectric copolymers, and therefore could allow clear understanding with regard to domain switching behavior in the ferroelectric copolymer films under ambient conditions. Half-monolayer Sr on Si(001) is a Zintl template necessary for epitaxial growth of SrTiO3 on Si(001). The authors investigate the reconstruction in the atomic and electronic structure of Si(001) induced by sub-monolayer Sr deposition using in-situ x-ray/ultraviolet photoemission spectroscopy and density functional theory. Sub-monolayer Sr is deposited on Si(001) using molecular beam epitaxy and the structural evolution of the surface is monitored using reflection high-energy electron diffraction. Experimentally, the authors find that the ionization energy of Si(001) decreases as a function of Sr coverage from 4.82 eV for pure Si(001) to 3.97 eV for half-monolayer Sr on Si(001) due to charge transfer from Sr to Si. They calculate the ionization energy for sub-monolayer Sr on Si(001) by considering several atomistic models and find good agreement with experiment. The authors clearly establish the Zintl character of the template by measuring the surface core level shifts of Si(001) and half-monolayer Sr/Si(001). The formation of the half monolayer (ML) Sr Zintl template layer on Si(001) is investigated in a combined experimental and theoretical work consisting of in situ reflection high energy electron diffraction, in situ x-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS), and density functional theory. Starting with clean 2 × 1 reconstructed Si(001), we demonstrate that Sr deposition leads to a charge transfer from the metal to the Si substrate resulting in the disappearance of the asymmetry of Si dimers-an essential structural change that enables direct perovskite epitaxy on Si, and likely, other semiconductors. XPS reveals an unexpected shift to higher binding energy of the Si 2p core-level components, including the bulk. This unusual behavior is attributed to final state effects using first principles calculations. As measured by ultraviolet photoelectron spectroscopy, the deposition of 0.5 ML of Sr lowers the work function of the system by 1.35 eV, and is in good agreement with our theoretical calculations.
