This research quantitatively evaluates the natural radioactivity levels and geological radiation hazard parameters of soil and rock specimens obtained from mining locations in North-Eastern Nigeria, by means of grammar-ray spectroscopy. There have been potential public health risks associated with the use of soil and rock from mining locations in North-Eastern Nigeria, specifically the study areas. A total of twenty-eight samples were systematically gathered from Nahuta and Kashere locations. Through gamma spectrometry employing a NaI (TI) detector, the natural radioactivity levels of 238U, 232Th and 40 K were determined for each and every sample. The findings indicated that the mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40 K in Nahuta are 46.13 ± 4.78 Bq/Kg, 34.10 ± 3.02 Bq/Kg and 473.94 ± 5.41 Bq/Kg for the soil samples respectively, and 32.91 ± 0.49 Bq/Kg, 40.70 ± 0.41 Bq/Kg, and 578.18 ± 4.28 Bq/Kg for the rock samples respectively. The corresponding mean activity concentrations of 226Ra, 232Th, and 40 K in kashere are 17.99 ± 4.18 Bq/Kg, 23.73 ± 1.78 Bq/Kg, and 191.65 ± 3.15 Bq/Kg, for the soil samples, and 20.24 ± 3.72 Bq/Kg, 29.09 ± 1.78 Bq/Kg, and 148.36 ± 3.15 Bq/Kg, for the rock samples respectively. An analysis of radiation risk parameters (D, AEDE, Raeq, Hex, Hin, AGDE and ELCR) has been conducted and findings explored. While the samples from the kashere region fall within the international recommended levels, elevated readings of certain radiation health parameters are observed in the Nahuta region, posing serious public health risk due to utilization of the soil and rock from this area in construction activities. Accurate estimation of energy fluxes and evapotranspiration ( ET ) in agricultural systems is critically needed, especially for water resource sustainability, soil moisture monitoring and irrigation. Numerous micrometeorological methods have become commercially available. Considering the eventual trade-off between cost and accuracy, it is important to evaluate these methods to provide recommendations for practical purposes. Therefore, we tested five different techniques at one field in the region of Central Europe dominated by rainfed farming but suffers from drought spells. In an intensive campaign, we used eddy covariance (EC), large aperture and surface layer scintillometers, the Bowen ratio energy balance (BREB), and the surface renewal (SR) methods to estimate the sensible ( H) and latent ( λET ) heat fluxes of winter wheat and bare soil with harvest residues during two months in summer 2015. At the half-hourly level, the methods showed varying agreement under different field conditions. While H estimated by EC and scintillometry agreed well, there was an underestimation of λET by EC compared to the other methods, most likely due to energy balance non-closure. The λET estimated by the BREB method showed good agreement with the λET obtained by scintillometry when the Bowen ratio ( β ) was high and with the λET obtained by EC when β   →  0. Our study confirmed good reliability of scintillometers across wide range of meteorological conditions. Although the SR method provided the most inferior agreement with other methods at half-hourly basis, it was deemed to be valuable when longer averaging periods were used. Over the entire experiment, mean daily ET estimated by scintillometry (2.6 mm d −1 ), BREB (2.3 mm d −1 ), and SR (2.9 mm d −1 ) showed reasonable agreement while EC (1.6 mm d −1 ) significantly underestimated. This indicates that low cost methods (BREB and SR) are sufficient for water management purposes when a daily and longer time scales are important. Further, parallel deploying of BREB and SR can provide additional diagnostics and increase the confidence in ET estimates. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Urban areas are subject to high human pressure and forthcoming enhanced hydrologic and climatic risks due to both city development and climate change. An asphalt concrete parking lot was instrumented in Nantes, France, to quantify the energy and hydrological responses of the surface to simulated rainfalls. The surface fluxes (precipitation, evaporation, radiation exchanges, sensible heat convection and conduction, runoff) were measured in situ and used to close the water budget with residual closure errors lower than 10%, depending on the surface evaporation retrieval method. The latent heat flux estimated from scintillometry measurements provided a better water budget closure than the direct eddy-correlation measurements. Runoff was the primary component of the water budget and represented around 80% of the total precipitation, compared to 17% for surface evaporation. The scintillometry method provided water evaporation time series at a 1-min time scale during the experiment. These series were used to characterize the rapid changes in the hydrological and energetic budgets of the asphalt surface after a precipitation event. During the drying phase the surface evaporation was significantly active, yielding 80% of the turbulent fluxes with a Bowen ratio of 0.25. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ecosystem water regulation couples energy and water balance, depends on the integrity of the ecosystem, and responds to changes in climate. Changes in tree-water relationships in the biodiversity hotspot of the tropical Andes in southern Ecuador might be potentially observed at the level of individual trees, thus providing an efficient ecosystem monitoring method with applications in forest management and conservation at the tree and landscape levels. In this study, we combine area-average measurements from a laser scintillometer above the forest with optical satellite data at high spatial resolution to obtain area-wide evapotranspiration data. The processing of field data includes the calculation of energy storage in forest biomass and the partitioning of evapotranspiration into transpiration and evaporation. Satellite-based estimates are calibrated by using tower flux measurements and meteorological data within periods of humid and less-humid atmosphere. The annual evapotranspiration was 1316 mm, of which 1086 mm per year corresponds to the forest transpiration at the study site. Average values of 4.7 and 4.1 mm d − 1 per tree crown are observed under humid and less-humid atmospheric conditions, respectively, when applying high-resolution area-wide evapotranspiration in individual crown analysis. Approximately 24% of the observed crowns show a positive monthly change in ET, and 51% of the crowns show a significant change in the daily ET, which can be considered sensitive individuals concerning water relationships. The limitations in the area-wide evapotranspiration at the crown level can be explained by considering the spectral responses of the crown individuals. Spatially integrated measurements of the surface energy balance (SEB) are needed in urban areas to evaluate urban climate models and satellite observations. Scintillometers allow observations of sensible heat flux ( QH) over much larger areas than techniques such as eddy covariance (EC), however methods are needed to partition between remaining unmeasured SEB terms. This is the first study to use observed spatial and temporal patterns of QH from a scintillometer network to constrain estimates of remaining SEB terms in a dense, heterogeneous urban environment. Results show that QH dominates the surface energy balance in central London throughout the year, with expected diurnal courses and seasonal trends in QH magnitude related to solar radiation input. Measurements also reveal a clear anthropogenic component of QH with winter (summer) weekday QH values 11.7% (5.1%) higher than weekends. Spatially, QH magnitude is correlated with vegetation and building landcover fraction in the measurement source areas. Spatial analysis provides additional evidence of anthropogenic influence with highest weekday/weekend ratios (1.55) from the City of London. Spatial differences are used to estimate horizontal advection and a novel method to estimate monthly latent heat flux is developed based on observed landcover and wet-dry surface variations in normalized QH. Annual anthropogenic heat emissions are estimated to be 46.3 W m−2 using an energy balance residual approach. The methods presented here have potential to significantly enhance understanding of urban areas, particularly in areas with tall buildings where there are few observational data. Estimates of turbulent fluxes (i.e., sensible and latent heat fluxes H and LE) over heterogeneous surfaces is not an easy task. The heterogeneity caused by the contrast in vegetation, hydric and soil conditions can generate a large spatial variability in terms of surface–atmosphere interactions. This study considered the issue of using a thermal-based two-source energy model (TSEB) driven by MODIS (Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) observations in conjunction with an aggregation scheme to derive area-averaged H and LE over a heterogeneous watershed in Niamey, Niger (Wankama catchment). Data collected in the context of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) program, including a scintillometry campaign, were used to test the proposed approach. The model predictions of area-averaged turbulent fluxes were compared to data acquired by a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) set up over a transect about 3.2 km-long and spanning three vegetation types (millet, fallow and degraded shrubs). First, H and LE fluxes were estimated at the MSG-SEVIRI grid scale by neglecting explicitly the subpixel heterogeneity. Moreover, the impact of upscaling the model’s inputs was investigated using in-situ input data and three aggregation schemes of increasing complexity based on MODIS products: a simple averaging of inputs at the MODIS resolution scale, another simple averaging scheme that considers scintillometer footprint extent, and the weighted average of inputs based on the footprint weighting function. The H and LE simulated using the footprint weighted method were more accurate than for the two other aggregation rules despite the heterogeneity of the landscape. The statistical values are: correlation coefficient (R) = 0.71, root mean square error (RMSE) = 63 W/m2 and mean bias error (MBE) = −23 W/m2 for H and an R = 0.82, RMSE = 88 W/m2 and MBE = 45 W/m2 for LE. This study opens perspectives for the monitoring of convective and evaporative fluxes over heterogeneous landscape based on medium resolution satellite products.

In the literature, no consensus can be found on the exact form of the universal funtions of Monin-Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) for the structure parameters of temperature, $${C_T}^2$$ , and humidity, $${C_q}^2$$ , and the dissipation rate of turbulent kinetic energy, $$\varepsilon $$ . By combining 11 datasets and applying data treatment with spectral data filtering and error-weighted curve-fitting we first derived robust MOST functions of $${C_T}^2, {C_q}^2$$ and $$\varepsilon $$ that cover a large stability range for both unstable and stable conditions. Second, as all data were gathered with the same instrumentation and were processed in the same way-in contrast to earlier studies-we were able to investigate the similarity of MOST functions across different datasets by defining MOST functions for all datasets individually. For $${C_T}^2$$ and $$\varepsilon $$ we found no substantial differences in MOST functions for datasets over different surface types or moisture regimes. MOST functions of $${C_q}^2$$ differ from that of $${C_T}^2$$ , but we could not relate these differences to turbulence parameters often associated with non-local effects. Furthermore, we showed that limited stability ranges and a limited number of data points are plausible reasons for variations of MOST functions in the literature. Last, we investigated the sensitivity of fluxes to the uncertainty of MOST functions. We provide an overview of the uncertainty range for MOST functions of $${C_T}^2, {C_q}^2$$ and $$\varepsilon $$ , and suggest their use in determining the uncertainty in surface fluxes. We evaluate the performance and investigate the capability of a scintillometer to detect wake vortices, crosswind and visibility near an airport runway. An experiment is carried out at Schiphol airport (Amsterdam, The Netherlands), where an optical scintillometer is positioned alongside a runway. An algorithm is developed to detect wake vortices, and also the strength of the wake vortex, from the variance in the scintillation signal. The algorithm shows promising results in detecting wake vortices and their strengths during the night. During the day, the scintillometer signal is dominated by environmental turbulence and wake vortices are no longer detectable. The crosswind measured by the scintillometer is compared with wind-speed and wind-direction data at the airport. Our results show that, after applying an outlier filter, the scintillometer is able to measure the crosswind over the short time period of 3 s required for aviation applications. The outlier filter does not compromise the capability of the scintillometer to obtain the maximum 3 s crosswind over a 10-min time frame correctly. Finally, a transmission method is used to obtain the visibility from the scintillometer signal, which is then compared with that obtained from a visibility sensor. The scintillometer is able to identify periods of low visibility correctly, although it shows a high amount of scatter around the exact visibility value. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Tillage practices are known to affect soil water retention, plant available water and, consequently, crop production. Impacts can be determined by assessing soil hydraulic properties and crop characteristics. In this study, three tillage practices were investigated with respect to vertical soil water distribution and development of soybean. A specific focus was set on determining evaporation and transpiration as fractions of evapotranspiration to obtain additional information on water availability and crop water use. The agricultural practices included conventional tillage, reduced tillage (no plow), and no-tillage. The study site was a long-term field experiment under rainfed conditions. The investigations covered a vegetation period of soybean. The measurements comprised weather and soil water monitoring using sensors and manual monitoring of crop development. Evapotranspiration and its components were determined using scintillometer measurements and an isotope-based water balance technique. In the researched vegetation period with limited water availability, the conservative tillage practices showed better water storage, water use, and crop yields compared to the conventional practice. The weekly evaporation and transpiration rates progressed according to the respective canopy development. Thus, delayed plant development of the no-till practice led to extended green cover and productive water use during the late season, where a large part of the precipitation has fallen. The tillage-induced differences of soil hydraulic properties had a substantial impact on soil water distribution, but a comparatively small impact on the soil surface wetness and thus directly on the evaporation rate. The tillage-induced impacts on soil cover by plant residues, however, showed the substantial reduction effect of plant residue cover on evaporation losses. Hence, assessment of evaporation and transpiration rates contributes to the understanding of differences in water productivity and promotes the efficient use of the available water resources. • No-tillage led to better crop water productivity under dry conditions. • Partitioning evapotranspiration helped specifying crop water productivity. • Smallest evaporation losses were determined at no-tillage due to residue cover. • Transpiration ratio depended more on canopy development than on soil moisture. We conduct a high-resolution large-eddy simulation (LES) case study in order to investigate the effects of surface heterogeneity on the (local) structure parameters of potential temperature $$C_T^2$$ and specific humidity $$C_q^2$$ in the convective boundary layer (CBL). The kilometre-scale heterogeneous land-use distribution as observed during the LITFASS-2003 experiment was prescribed at the surface of the LES model in order to simulate a realistic CBL development from the early morning until early afternoon. The surface patches are irregularly distributed and represent different land-use types that exhibit different roughness conditions as well as near-surface fluxes of sensible and latent heat. In the analysis, particular attention is given to the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) relationships and local free convection (LFC) scaling for structure parameters in the surface layer, relating $$C_T^2$$ and $$C_q^2$$ to the surface fluxes of sensible and latent heat, respectively. Moreover we study possible effects of surface heterogeneity on scintillometer measurements that are usually performed in the surface layer. The LES data show that the local structure parameters reflect the surface heterogeneity pattern up to heights of 100-200 m. The assumption of a blending height, i.e. the height above the surface where the surface heterogeneity pattern is no longer visible in the structure parameters, is studied by means of a two-dimensional correlation analysis. We show that no such blending height is found at typical heights of scintillometer measurements for the studied case. Moreover, $$C_q^2$$ does not follow MOST, which is ascribed to the entrainment of dry air at the top of the boundary layer. The application of MOST and LFC scaling to elevated $$C_T^2$$ data still gives reliable estimates of the surface sensible heat flux. We show, however, that this flux, derived from scintillometer data, is only representative of the footprint area of the scintillometer, whose size depends strongly on the synoptic conditions. Accurate quantification of evaporation from small water storages is essential for water management and planning, particularly in water-scarce regions. In order to ascertain suitable methods for direct measurement of evaporation from small water bodies, this study presents a comparison of eddy covariance and scintillometry measurements from a reservoir in southeast Queensland, Australia. The work presented expands on a short study presented by McJannet et al. (2011) to include comparisons of eddy covariance measurements and scintillometer-derived predictions of surface energy fluxes under a wide range of seasonal weather conditions. In this study, analysis was undertaken to ascertain whether important theoretical assumptions required for both techniques are valid in the complex environment of a small reservoir. Statistical comparison, energy balance closure, and the relationship between evaporation measurements and key environmental controls were used to compare the results of the two techniques. Reasonable agreement was shown between the sensible heat flux measurements from eddy covariance and scintillometry, while scintillometer-derived estimates of latent heat flux were approximately 21% greater than eddy covariance measurements. We suggest possible reasons for this difference and provide recommendations for further research for improving measurements of surface energy fluxes over small water bodies using eddy covariance and scintillometry. Refraction is a detrimental problem in terrestrial optical measurements and can be regarded as major source of systematic errors in the precise determination of distances and directions. In general, refraction is a function of the density inhomogeneities of the propagation medium. As the “classical” method of temperature-gradient determination, it does not meet the requirement of a representative integral determination of the refractive index gradient fi eld. At the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry of the ETH Zurich, two methods to determine and correct the refraction infl uence have been developed further during the last few years. One approach focuses on determining the refractive index gradient in measuring the turbulence of the air by scintillometry or CDD-based image processing, which is presently the key technology in tracking tacheometers and digital levels. Turbulence is a measure of the energy in the heat exchanging process and can be converted by the Monin-Obukov-Similarity into temperature gradients. Th e advantage of optical scintillation measurements is to derive line-averaged-turbulence parameters of the atmospheric surface layer. Another challenging approach was the successful development of a compact laser-dispersometer at the ETH, which could be a component of actual geodetic instruments in the future. A dispersometer theodolite, based on the dual-wavelength method for dispersive air, is capable of refraction-free direction measurements. Th e results of both technologies, turbulence determination and dispersometry, will be presented and discussed in this paper. Monino ir Obuchovo panašumo metodu iš turbulencijos gali būti apskaičiuotas temperatūrinis gradientas. Optinės scintiliacijos matavimų pranašumas yra vidutinių turbulencijos parametrų radimas tiriant atmosferinio paviršiaus sluoksnį. Kitas įdomus būdas tapo prieinamas sukūrus lazerinį dispersometrą ETH. Jis ateityje galėtų tapti serijinių geodezinių prietaisų dalimi. Dispersometrinis teodolitas, kurio veikimo principas grindžiamas dvigubojo bangos ilgio sklindančiame ore metodu, matuojant padeda išvengti refrakcijos. Two fundamental issues in the understanding of processes active at the onset of volcanism in the Paraná volcanic province of South America are the description of individual lava flows and the relationships between the lavas and the underlying loose erg sand. In the Novo Hamburgo region, Brazil, four Cretaceous lavas cover the erg and are well exposed in large quarries. One basalt flow (51.52 wt.% SiO2) and three basaltic andesites (52.28–55.74 wt.% SiO2) of the low-Ti Gramado chemical type are present. Outstanding, partly silicified sand injectites are also exposed, including 100 m-long (1–2 m thick) extrudites and one sill of similar dimensions (up to 5 m thick) as well as their feeding dikes and smaller sills. The feeder dikes display funnel shapes near the lower contact of the sand extrudites. Gamma-ray emission rates of the four flows are 79, 128, 95, and 97 counts per second from the first to the fourth flow. A vertical basalt dike (47.10 wt.% SiO2) cuts the Incopel flow in the Sultepa quarry and has 54 counts per second. This evidence indicates the intrusion of fluidized sand from the underlying erg turned into the Guarani aquifer, a prime example for the dynamic interaction of hot water-saturated erg sand with an overlying basalt seal. The Paraná volcanic province is unique among large continental flood basalt provinces because of the presence of a heated aquifer underneath the extrusive pile and the geologic evidence of explosion of hot water and its vapour carrying sand into the overlying, cool lavas. With the emergence of water supply and food security issues as a result of increasing population and climate change pressures, the need for efficient use of available water supplies is paramount. Management of available resources and improved efficiency require accurate specification of evaporation, which is a major water loss pathway, yet evaporation remains difficult to accurately quantify. This study uses scintillometry-derived measurements of evaporation to test the performance of water balance, pan coefficient, and combination modeling techniques, which might commonly be used by resource managers. Both pan coefficient and water balance techniques performed poorly, but the Penman-Monteith model with local site data and site-specific wind function produced estimates within 2% of those measured. Recognizing that such a model parameterization would rarely be a possibility in most environments, further testing involving the range of data sets that might be available for a location was undertaken. Modeling using over-water measurements and, generally, applicable wind functions from the literature produced estimates 26% greater than those measured. Estimates within 12% of those measured were made for the equivalent model setup using over-land meteorological data; however, when data from the nearest meteorological station was used, this difference increased to 27%. The different evaporation estimation techniques tested were shown to produce a range of estimates of water availability, which varied by nearly 30%. The large differences between measured and predicted evaporation highlight the uncertainty that still exists in evaporation estimation and the sensitivity of predictions to the source of input data. Abstract: The Paraná volcanic province is the world''s largest producer of amethyst geodes, mostly from the Ametista do Sul mining district (20 by 30km) in southern Brazil. The description of the lava flows in the Ametista do Sul mining district, and adjacent areas, combined with flow-by-flow geochemistry and scintillometry, defines the stratigraphy of the flows. Nine flows were identified in the Ametista do Sul region and four additional flows were identified in the Frederico Westphalen region, totalizing 13 flows in the stratigraphy of the Ametista do Sul mining district. Six of the flows belong to Pitanga magma type (more than 3wt.% TiO2); which occur at the base of the local stratigraphy and the other seven flows belong to Paranapanema magma type (2–3wt.% TiO2) at the top of the stratigraphy. The amethyst-bearing geodes occur in the uppermost three Pitanga flows, known as Veia Alta (main producer), Veia do Meio and Veia Baixa. These flows were highly altered (more than 60vol.%) to clay minerals by a low temperature alteration process. The massive presence of clay minerals is an important component that controls the rheology of the rock, transforming the basalt into a very low grade smectite and celadonite metabasalt. Two Paranapanema flows, COOGAMAI and Linha Alta, from Ametista do Sul were identified in a lower position, at the base of the section in Frederico Westphalen which were correlated using scintillometry and flow-by-flow geochemistry. In addition, Veia Alta and Veia do Meio flows were also identified in lower positions, compared to Ametista do Sul. Thus, the identification of these flows in different places with different elevations is an evidence of the presence of downthrown blocks in a fault-block structure, lowering the stratigraphy more than 200m to the west in four steps. The tectonic patterns that generate this structure are three NW-strike lineaments. The identification of the COOGAMAI flow at the base of the Frederico Westphalen region, suggests that the Veia Alta geode-hosting flow is below the ground or below the elevation of 250m in this region. These evidences show that the fault-block structure is controlling vertically the deposit of amethyst-bearing geodes and is of major significance in the exploration for new amethyst geode deposits in the region. Monin-Obukhov similarity functions for the structure parameters of temperature and humidity are needed to derive surface heat and water vapour fluxes from scintillometer measurements and it is often assumed that the two functions are identical in the atmospheric surface layer. Nevertheless, this assumption has not yet been verified experimentally. This study investigates the dissimilarity between the turbulent transport of sensible heat and water vapour, with a specific focus on the difference between the Monin-Obukhov similarity functions for the structure parameters. Using two datasets collected over homogeneous surfaces where the surface sources of sensible heat and water vapour are well correlated, we observe that under stable and very unstable conditions, the two functions are similar. This similarity however breaks down under weakly unstable conditions; in that regime, the absolute values of the correlations between temperature and humidity are also observed to be low, most likely due to large-scale eddies that transport unsteadiness, advection or entrainment effects from the outer layer. We analyze and demonstrate how this reduction in the correlation leads to dissimilarity between the turbulent transport of these two scalars and the corresponding Monin-Obukhov similarity functions for their structure parameters. A model to derive sensible and latent heat fluxes from structure parameters without measuring the friction velocity is tested and found to work very well under moderately to strongly unstable conditions (− z/ L > 0.5). Finally, we discuss the modelling of the cross-structure parameter over wet surfaces, which is crucial for correcting water vapour effects on optical scintillometer measurements and also for obtaining surface sensible and latent heat fluxes from the two-wavelength scintillometry. In scintillometry Monin-Obukhov similarity theory (MOST) is used to calculate the surface sensible heat flux from the structure parameter of temperature $${(C_{T^2})}$$ . In order to prevent saturation a scintillometer can be installed at an elevated level. However, in that case the observation level might be located outside the atmospheric surface layer (ASL) and thus the validity of MOST questioned. Therefore, we examine two concepts to determine the turbulent surface sensible heat flux from the structure parameter at elevated levels with data obtained at 60-m height on the Cabauw tower (the Netherlands). In the first concept (MOSTs) $${C_{T^2}}$$ is still scaled with the surface flux, whereas in the second (MOSTl) $${C_{T^2}}$$ is scaled with the local sensible heat flux. The $${C_{T^2}}$$ obtained from both concepts is compared with direct observations of $${C_{T^2}}$$ using a sonic anemometer/thermometer. In the afternoon (when the measurement height is located within the ASL) both concepts give results that are comparable to the directly observed values of $${C_{T^2}}$$ . In the morning (data outside the ASL), our data do not unequivocally support either of the two concepts. First, the peak in $${C_{T^2}}$$ that occurs when the measurement height is located in the entrainment zone disqualifies the use of MOST. Second, during the morning transition, local scaling shows the correct pattern (zero flux and a minimum in $${C_{T^2}}$$) but underestimates $${C_{T^2}}$$ by a factor of ten. Third, from the best linear fit a we found that the slope of MOSTl gave better results, whereas the offset is closer to zero for MOSTs. Further, the correlation between the direct observations and MOST-scaled results is low and similar for the two concepts. An extra large aperture scintillometer (XLAS) was used over several months across the Thau Lagoon (South of France) to retrieve one-wavelength scintillation and, thence, sensible heat flux. We present the experiment with the XLAS, an eddy-covariance station and meteorological stations measuring on or near the Thau Lagoon. Changes implemented to adapt the scintillometry processing schemes to the above water conditions are presented together with a full error budget, including sensitivity tests to the relevant parameters of the scintillometer processing scheme. The XLAS error budget amounts to 16% (systematic part) ±50% (random part). Sensible heat fluxes obtained using the XLAS under unstable atmospheric conditions are then compared to eddy-covariance estimates used as a reference. The scintillometry technique proved to perform satisfactorily in such a watery environment. Some discrepancies observed between the XLAS and eddy-covariance measurements were investigated according to the lagoon fraction of the source area, to discriminate whether they were related to deviations from the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory or to different atmospheric conditions at the respective instrument locations. Local atmospheric conditions agreed well with the Monin-Obukhov similarity theory, especially measurements with source areas largely composed of the lagoon surface. Retaining only the measurements with almost only the lagoon surface in the source area improved the agreement between the XLAS and eddy-covariance measurements. The remaining discrepancies are interpreted as being due to significant location differences between the two instruments, resulting in different atmospheric conditions, and to size differences in the source areas. Abstract: Based on a 3-year period of infrared scintillometry, soil and meteorological measurements, this study presents an analysis of the surface energy balance partitioning over a heterogeneous savannah, in the Sudano-Sahelian region. The site is located in Northern Benin, meso-site of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analyses (AMMA) project. The 3-year period enables an analysis of several alternate dry and wet periods, as well as the intermediate dry-to-wet and wet-to-dry periods. Infrared scintillometry, coupled with measurements of the available energy (net radiation minus ground heat flux) and a careful analysis of the aerodynamic properties of the scintillometer footprint, are employed to provide robust estimates of the turbulent (sensible and latent heat) fluxes over complex terrain, in terms of the topography and in terms of the spatially and temporally heterogeneous vegetation cover. A characterization of the uncertainties on each term of the energy balance is given at the scale of the scintillometer footprint. These uncertainties strongly depend on the season for the residual latent heat flux. Results point out that the climate of the Sudano-Sahelian region is characterized by a strong seasonal cycle and inter-annual variability, related to changing atmospheric and land surface conditions. The evaporative fraction is found to be relatively constant during the wet period (0.67) and more variable during the dry and intermediate periods. In addition, sensible heat flux and net radiation are well correlated during the dry season. The diurnal cycle shows a predominance of evaporation during the wet season and sensible heat during the dry season. Results point a significant latent heat flux during the dry period, signature of persistent vegetation in the Sudano-Sahelian region. Finally, that data set at hourly time step would provide useful information for modelling and the parameterization of the associated processes for this region. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

The effects of a non-uniform wind field along the path of a scintillometer are investigated. Theoretical spectra are calculated for a range of scenarios where the crosswind varies in space or time and compared to the 'ideal' spectrum based on a constant uniform crosswind. It is verified that the refractive-index structure parameter relation with the scintillometer signal remains valid and invariant for both spatially and temporally-varying crosswinds. However, the spectral shape may change significantly preventing accurate estimation of the crosswind speed from the peak of the frequency spectrum and retrieval of the structure parameter from the plateau of the power spectrum. On comparison with experimental data, non-uniform crosswind conditions could be responsible for previously unexplained features sometimes seen in observed spectra. By accounting for the distribution of crosswind, theoretical spectra can be generated that closely replicate the observations, leading to a better understanding of the measurements. Spatial variability of wind speeds should be expected for paths other than those that are parallel to the surface and over flat, homogenous areas, whilst fluctuations in time are important for all sites. Geochemical studies of the six lowermost lava flows of the Cretaceous Serra Geral Formation (Paraná volcanic province) in Quaraí (Brazil) and Artigas (Uruguay) were combined with flow-by-flow field studies of structures and scintillometric profiles to establish a consistent regional stratigraphic framework over at least 100 km. This greatly improves exploration capability for amethyst and agate geodes. A basalt, colada Mata Olho (Alegrete facies, Serra Geral Formation), was the first lava to flow over the ancient Botucatu desert in the region, but an andesite, colada Catalán, overstepped this basalt in many places, perhaps palaeohighs. Four basaltic andesites complete the lava stratigraphy in this formation, adding up to 300 m of lavas. The stratigraphic sequence of contrasting lava compositions is 51.0 wt % SiO² in the first lava, followed by 57.5, 52.5, 56.0, 53.0 and finally 54.5 wt % SiO². Overall MgO variation is between 2 and 7 wt %. All lavas in the two districts are low-Ti (< 2.0 wt % TiO²) of the Gramado type. The characteristic contents of most major and trace elements (124 rock samples analysed) allow the ready identification of each lava. Contrasting rock chemistry also results in strong variation in scintillometric values (270 points measured in the field and nineteen continuous borehole profiles); from bottom to top of the stratigraphy, the cps values are 49 ± 3.2, 123 ± 10.3, 62 ± 4.7, 94 ± 4.6, ∼ 45 and ∼ 85. Colada Catalán has the structure of aa lava, particularly the contorted igneous banding and autobreccias in the upper and lower crusts. In some places, a 2 mthick, silicified sandstone layer lies on top of some coladas, and silicified sandstone forms breccias with volcanic rocks. Geochemistry of the six lavas indicates complex evolution, involving melting of lithospheric mantle, injection into the crust and assimilation of crust followed by fractional crystallization. Abstract: A number of studies have been devoted to derive the diurnal course of regional evapotranspiration (ET) especially in semi-arid areas where the assessment of this term is of crucial importance for water resources management. One approach to derive regional evapotranspiration is based on the use of aggregation schemes in conjunction with energy-balance or land-surface models. However, the effectiveness of this approach cannot be fully assessed without a comparison between the model''s flux simulations and the ground truth observations. In the present study, the issue of using scintillometry for validating spatial and temporal aggregation schemes over heterogeneous grids has been investigated. Data collected within the SUDMED project over the oliveyard of Agdal which was located near the city of Marrakech, Morocco, have been used to test the aggregation schemes. The Agdal oliveyard was made up of two contrasted fields, or patches. Even though the two sites appear relatively homogeneous, they differ strongly in terms of soil moisture status and vegetation percent cover. The higher soil moisture in the northern site creates heterogeneity at the scale of the entire olive yard (i.e. at grid-scale). Firstly, the diurnal course of the grid-scale evapotranspiration (〈ETsim〉SA) estimated from spatial aggregation scheme is compared to that derived from scintillometry (〈ETLAS〉). 〈ETsim〉SA is obtained as the residual term of the energy balance providing the estimates of the available energy (AE= R n − G), where R n and G are the net radiation and the soil heat flux, respectively, and sensible heat flux. The latter is estimated by using a simple two-layer model developed by . The root mean square difference (RMSD) and the correlation coefficient (R 2) between 〈ETsim〉SA and 〈ETLAS〉 were about 46Wm−2 and 0.78, respectively. Secondly, we compared the diurnal course of grid-scale evapotranspiration (〈ETsim〉TA) estimated from the temporal aggregation scheme with the 〈ETLAS〉. 〈ETsim〉TA is obtained by extrapolating the instantaneous values of the available energy and the evaporative fraction (EF=ET/AE) estimated at the satellite overpass to daily ones. The instantaneous values of AE and EF have been derived using remotely sensed surface temperature measured using a ground-based infrared thermometer combined with ancillary micrometeorological data such as wind speed, incoming and outgoing solar radiation, and temperature and humidity of the air. The RMSD and the R 2 were about 43Wm−2 and 0.7, respectively. Despite the complexity of the site induced by the strong heterogeneity in the soil moisture which is related to the employed irrigation method (flood irrigation), and the consequences in terms of the footprint of the instruments, the obtained statistical results showed that both aggregation schemes performed successfully with regard to estimates of the evapotranspiration over heterogeneous grids. Finally, to further assess the performance of the developed approach, a second dataset collected in northern Mexico has been also used. The result shows that the approach provides acceptable values of aggregated evapotranspiration. Consequently, scintillometry can potentially be used in the development and the validation of aggregation approaches to improve the representation of surface heterogeneity land-surface–atmosphere models operating at large scales. Summary: This paper deals with the issue of using scintillometry in conjunction with a simple aggregation scheme to derive area-averaged sensible and latent heat fluxes over a small watershed in Niamey, Niger (Wankama catchment). Data collected in the context of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) program has been used to test the proposed approach. For this purpose, a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) was set up over heterogeneous surface transect of about 3.2km spanning three vegetation types. The comparison between scintillometer-based estimates of area-averaged sensible heat fluxes and those measured by a network of the classical eddy covariance (EC) devices showed good agreement, with a relative error of about 20% (R 2 =0.85, RMSD=22Wm−2, and SEE=21.39Wm−2). This is a good result considering the contrast in terms of the footprint scales associated with the two devices, which is amplified by the heterogeneity of the catchment. The results also showed that using the LAS-derived values of area-average sensible heat flux in conjunction with a simple aggregation rule to estimate area-average available energy led to a reasonable prediction of area-averaged latent heat flux (R 2 =0.75, RMSD=64Wm−2 and SEE=50Wm−2), when compared to those measured using the EC network. This is of interest since the LAS can potentially be used to validate estimates of surface fluxes, based on the meso-scale model, as well as those estimated using coarse-scale remote sensing-based algorithm. Summary: Actual evapotranspiration is one of the major components of both energy and water budgets, but is often difficult to monitor over long period with sufficient accuracy. Within the framework of the “AMMA-CATCH” program, a project dedicated to the study of the West African Monsoon, a large aperture scintillometer has been installed in a small catchment (12km2), located in the North of Benin, a region exposed to sudanian climate. The present study is an attempt to estimate the latent heat flux over this small but heterogeneous catchment based on scintillation and ground observations. The analysis covers the end of the dry season (lasting from February to April 2006). During this period two isolated rainfall events occurred, giving a unique opportunity to study energy and water budgets simultaneously. The comparison between the average sensible heat flux derived from scintillometer observations and the one obtained with conventional eddy correlation shows a relatively good agreement, where the scattering is mainly explained by differences in footprint associated with both instruments. A relevant hourly residual latent heat flux is then obtained through the energy balance equation, with careful attention brought to the net radiation, and the ground heat fluxes. The residual of the energy budget equation is compared to soil water losses from vadose zone and water table, in order to evaluate whether this estimation is consistent with the water budget of the ground. Daily soil water depletion within the first meter of the surface shows a similar dynamic as the one calculated from the energy balance equation, but exhibits a constant 1mm/day lag. The excess of actual evapotranspiration is supposed to be explained by water table losses and root extraction by trees. Refraction is a detrimental problem in terrestrial optical measurements and can be regarded as major source of systematic errors in the precise determination of distances and directions. In general, refraction is a function of the density inhomogeneities of the propagation medium. As the "classical" method of temperature-gradient determination does not meet the requirement of a representative integral determination of the refractive index gradient field, at the Institute of Geodesy and Photogrammetry of the ETH Zurich, two methods to determine and correct the refraction influence have been developed further during the last few years. One approach focuses on the determination of the refractive index gradient in measuring the turbulence of the air by scintillometry or CDD-based image processing, which is presently the key technology in tracking tacheometers and digital levels. Turbulence is a measure of the energy in the heat exchanging process and can be converted by the Monin-Obukov-Similarity into temperature gradients. The advantage of optical scintillation measurements is to derive line averaged turbulence parameters of the atmospheric surface layer. Another challenging approach was the successful development of a compact laser-dispersometer at the ETH, which could be a component of actual geodetic instruments in the future. A dispersometer theodolite, based on the dual-wavelength method for dispersive air, is capable of refraction-free direction measurements. A method to estimate areal evaporation using a microwave link (radio wave scintillometer) in combination with an energy budget constraint is proposed. This radio wave scintillometry-energy budget method (RWS-EBM) is evaluated for its applicability in different meteorological conditions and for its sensitivity to various variables (the structure parameter of the refractive index of air C n2, the total available energy R n − G, the wind velocity u, the effective average vegetation height h0, and the correlation coefficient between the temperature and humidity fluctuations r TQ). The method is shown to be best suited for use in wet to moderately dry conditions, where the latent heat flux is at least a third of the total available energy (i.e., Bowen ratio ≤2). It is important to accurately measure the total available energy and the wind velocity as the RWS-EBM is most sensitive to these variables. The Flevoland field experiment has provided the data, obtained with a 27-GHz radio wave scintillometer (over 2.2 km), a large-aperture scintillometer (also 2.2 km), and four eddy covariance systems, which are used to test the RWS-EBM. Comparing 92 daytime measurements (30-min intervals) of the evaporation estimated using the RWS-EBM to that determined in alternative manners (eddy covariance and two-wavelength scintillometry) leads to the conclusion that the method provides consistent estimates (coefficient of determination r2 = 0.85 in both cases) under relatively wet conditions. This study examines the seasonal cycle of the components of the surface energy balance in the Volta basin in West Africa as part of the GLOWA-Volta project. The regional climate is characterized by a strong north–south gradient of mean annual rainfall and the occurrence of pronounced dry and wet seasons within one annual cycle, causing a strong seasonal variation in the natural vegetation cover. The observations are conducted with a combined system, consisting of a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) for areally averaged sensible heat flux, radiometers and sensors for soil heat flux. For comparisons the eddy-covariance (EC) method providing the fluxes of momentum, sensible and latent heat is utilized as well. The measurements of a seasonal cycle in 2002/2003 were gathered including the rapid wet-to-dry transition after the wet season at two locations in Ghana, one in the humid tropical southern region and one in the northern region. A direct comparison and the energy balance closure of the two methods are investigated for daytime and nighttime separately. An attempt is made to understand and explain the differences between the two methods and the closure of energy budget found for these. It is found that the two systems correspond well during daytime. During nighttime the LAS seems to perform more realistically than the EC system. Considering the fact that a LAS system is much easier to use in the climate conditions of the Volta basin, it is concluded that the LAS approach is very suitable in this type of climate conditions. Surface conductances are estimated by rearranging the Penman–Monteith equation and compared to a Jarvis-type model optimised for savannah conditions. It is found that temperature dependence should be included in the conductance formulation in contrast to earlier findings. Refraction effects of optical beams are generally caused by an inhomogeneous propagation medium and are a major source of systematic errors in the precise optical determination of angles and distances in the atmospheric surface layer. In this contribution a method for deriving vertical temperature and refractive index gradients from optical scintillation is presented. Knowledge of these gradients is required for the compensation of atmospherically induced errors for highly precise terrestrial geodetic measurements, like direct transfer and levelling. The advantage of the present optical method is, that temperature and refractive index gradients can be derived as line-averaged values over the propagation path, which is not possible by meteorological point measurements. Field observations have been carried out with a displaced-beam scintillometer over flat terrain and under different atmospheric conditions in order to verify this method. Estimates of turbulent fluxes (i.e., sensible and latent heat fluxes H and LE) over heterogeneous surfaces is not an easy task. The heterogeneity caused by the contrast in vegetation, hydric and soil conditions can generate a large spatial variability in terms of surface–atmosphere interactions. This study considered the issue of using a thermal-based two-source energy model (TSEB) driven by MODIS (Moderate resolution Imaging Spectroradiometer) and MSG (Meteosat Second Generation) observations in conjunction with an aggregation scheme to derive area-averaged H and LE over a heterogeneous watershed in Niamey, Niger (Wankama catchment). Data collected in the context of the African Monsoon Multidisciplinary Analysis (AMMA) program, including a scintillometry campaign, were used to test the proposed approach. The model predictions of area-averaged turbulent fluxes were compared to data acquired by a Large Aperture Scintillometer (LAS) set up over a transect about 3.2 km-long and spanning three vegetation types (millet, fallow and degraded shrubs). First, H and LE fluxes were estimated at the MSG-SEVIRI grid scale by neglecting explicitly the subpixel heterogeneity. Moreover, the impact of upscaling the model’s inputs was investigated using in-situ input data and three aggregation schemes of increasing complexity based on MODIS products: a simple averaging of inputs at the MODIS resolution scale, another simple averaging scheme that considers scintillometer footprint extent, and the weighted average of inputs based on the footprint weighting function. The H and LE simulated using the footprint weighted method were more accurate than for the two other aggregation rules despite the heterogeneity of the landscape. The statistical values are: correlation coefficient (R) = 0.71, root mean square error (RMSE) = 63 W/m2 and mean bias error (MBE) = −23 W/m2 for H and an R = 0.82, RMSE = 88 W/m2 and MBE = 45 W/m2 for LE. Quantification of the water cycle components is key to managing water resources. Remote sensing techniques and products have recently been developed for the estimation of water balance variables. The objective of this study was to test the reliability of LandSAF (Land Surface Analyses Satellite Applications Facility) evapotranspiration (ET) and SPOT-Vegetation Normalised Difference Water Index (NDWI) by comparison with ground-based measurements. Evapotranspiration (both daily and 30 min) was successfully estimated with LandSAF products in a flat area dominated by fynbos vegetation (Riverlands, Western Cape) that was representative of the satellite image pixel at 3 km resolution. Correlation coefficients were 0.85 and 0.91 and linear regressions produced R2 of 0.72 and 0.75 for 30 min and daily ET, respectively. Ground-measurements of soil water content taken with capacitance sensors at 3 depths were related to NDWI obtained from 10-daily maximum value composites of SPOT-Vegetation images at a resolution of 1 km. Multiple regression models showed that NDWI relates well to soil water content after accounting for precipitation (adjusted R2 were 0.71, 0.59 and 0.54 for 10, 40 and 80 cm soil depth, respectively). Changes in NDWI trends in different land covers were detected in 14-year time series using the breaks for additive seasonal and trend (BFAST) methodology. Appropriate usage, awareness of limitations and correct interpretation of remote sensing data can facilitate water management and planning operations. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
