We report on the light propagation in a one-line-defect photonic crystal waveguide (W1 PhC WG) patterned into a 450 nm thick free-standing lithium niobate membrane by ion-beam enhanced etching. The Bloch wave vectors and transmission spectrum of this PhC WG were retrieved from optical near-field images. The experimental data show good agreement with simulations performed with the three-dimensional (3D) finite-element method and the 3D finite-difference time-domain method. Those results are promising for the development of integrated optics devices operating at telecom wavelengths and based on free-standing lithium niobate PhC membranes. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Ion-beam mixing of Fe/Si bilayers, induced at room temperature by 100 keV 40Ar+, 180 keV 86Kr+, and 250 keV 132Xe+ ions, was investigated. The study focuses on the influence of the preamorphization of the Si(100) substrates by 1.0 keV Ar-ion irradiation. Rutherford backscattering spectroscopy as well as scanning and transmission electron microscopies were applied for structural characterization. The mixing rate across the preamorphized Fe/Si interface was, on average, by 76% higher than that of crystalline Si. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Nonlinear optical nanoscale waveguides are a compact and powerful platform for efficient wavelength conversion. The free-standing waveguide geometry opens a range of applications in microscopy for local delivery of light, where in situ wavelength conversion helps to overcome various wavelength-dependent issues, such as biological tissue damage. In this paper, we present an original patterning method for high-precision fabrication of free-standing nanoscale waveguides based on lithium niobate, a material with a strong second-order nonlinearity and a broad transparency window covering the visible and mid-infrared wavelength ranges. The fabrication process combines electron-beam lithography with ion-beam enhanced etching and produces nanowaveguides with lengths from 5 to 50 μm, widths from 50 to 1000 nm and heights from 50 to 500 nm, each with a precision of few nanometers. The fabricated nanowaveguides are tested in an optical characterization experiment showing efficient second-harmonic generation.

Nanoscale waveguides are basic building blocks of integrated optical devices. Especially, waveguides made from nonlinear optical materials, such as lithium niobate, allow access to a broad range of applications using second-order nonlinear frequency conversion processes. Based on a lithium niobate on insulator substrate, millimeter-long nanoscale waveguides were fabricated with widths as small as 200 nm. The fabrication was done by means of potassium hydroxide-assisted ion-beam-enhanced etching. The waveguides were optically characterized in the near infrared wavelength range showing phase-matched second-harmonic generation.

We study the nonlinear optical properties of lithium niobate (LiNbO(3)) nanowires (NWs) fabricated by a top-down ion beam enhanced etching method. First, we demonstrate generation and propagation of the second-harmonic (SH) light in LiNbO(3) NWs of typical rectangular cross-sections of 400 x 600 nm(2) and length from 10 to 50 μm. Then, we show local fluorescent excitation of 4',6-diamidino-2-phenylindole (DAPI) dye with the propagated SH signal in standard concentrations as for biological applications. By measuring the detected average power of the propagated fundamental harmonic (FH) and the SH signal at the output of the NWs, we directly prove the dominating role of the SH signal over possible two-photon excitation processes with the FH in the DAPI dye. We estimate that 63 ± 6 pW of the propagated SH average power is required for detectable dye excitation. Finally, we model the waveguiding of the SH light to determine the smallest NW cross-section (around 40x60 nm(2)) which is potentially able to excite fluorescence with a FH intensity below the cell damage threshold.

After annealing at 540°C, NiTi is covered by a characteristic oxide layer with an Ni-containing outer and an Ni-free inner titanium oxide region. To elucidate details of the yet unclear formation process, samples were annealed in an atmosphere containing different oxygen isotopes at a time and analyzed by nondestructive ion beam techniques at different stages of the oxidation. During the heating stage, an oxygen permeable "low Ni" titanium oxide forms, and the oxide layer grows inward. Subsequently, when the annealing temperature of 540°C is reached, Ni-free stoichiometric titanium oxide forms and inhibits the transport of oxygen toward the bulk. Thus, the oxide layer growth changes to outward, and the final location of the reaction front between O and Ti is inside the oxide layer at the transition of "low Ni" oxide to "Ni-free" oxide. Consequently, the annealing conditions during inward oxide layer growth govern the surface properties, whereas the conditions during outward oxide layer growth are uncritical with respect to the surface properties. The findings are directly applicable to set the amount of surface Ni of NiTi devices, provide basis for detailed interpretation of experimental results involving annealing of NiTi, and can further respective modeling., (Copyright © 2012 Wiley Periodicals, Inc.)

Ion-beam enhanced etching is used to pattern a bulk lithium niobate crystal with ultrathin membranes. By the implementation of an air gap beneath the membrane, high index contrast is achieved. A buried amorphous layer, created by irradiation with He ions, is removed by means of wet chemical etching in hydro-fluoric acid. Membranes having thicknesses down to 200 nm are fabricated. The etched air gaps and the membranes exhibit a uniform thickness over the entire etched area, and their widths can be purposefully adjusted over a wide range by choosing appropriate ion energies and fluences as well as annealing conditions.

Medical grade Ni-Ti alloys with shape memory or pseudo-elastic behavior exhibit good biocompatibility because of an electrochemically passive oxide layer on the surface. In this work, the mechanical stability of surface oxide layers is investigated during reversible pseudo-elastic deformation of commonly applied medical grade Ni-Ti wires. Surface oxide layers with varying thickness were generated by varying annealing times under air atmosphere. The thicknesses of the surface oxide layers were determined by means of Rutherford backscattering spectrometry. In situ scanning electron microscopy investigations reveal a damage mechanism, which is assumed to have a significant influence on the biocompatibility of the material. The conditions that lead to the appearance of cracks in the surface oxide layer or to the flaking of surface oxide layer particles are identified. The influence of the thickness of the surface oxide layer on the damage mode is characterized. The possible impact of the damaged surface oxide layer on the material's biocompatibility and the potentials to reduce or avoid the damage are discussed.

We present results on the fabrication and characterization of ridge waveguides in zinc-substituted lithium niobate. High-quality waveguides were fabricated by a combination of liquid-phase epitaxy and multiple applications of ion-beam enhanced etching. The two major demands on ridge waveguides, a very low side-wall roughness and a rectangle shape with side-wall angles close to 90 degrees , were realized simultaneously by using this technique. Single-mode waveguiding at a wavelength of 1064 nm was demonstrated with attenuation values of 0.9 dB/cm.
