Monitoring the curing behavior of a thermosetting material is a key issue for ensuring a stable manufacturing process (e.g., injection molding). Dielectric analysis (DEA), which is applicable for online-monitoring, is used to investigate the curing behavior of a glass-fiber-reinforced epoxy molding compound. At first, the influences of experimental settings (pressure, temperature, and frequency) on'dielectric responses (dielectric loss and ion viscosity) are characterized in a fully crosslinked material. Results show a significant impact of temperature and frequency on dielectric responses. Furthermore, DEA is combined with differential scanning calorimetry (DSC) to investigate dielectric properties depending on crosslink density under non-isothermal and isothermal conditions. In this study, we quantitatively investigate the impact of 1.4 wt.% chromium and 1.4 wt.% molybdenum additions on pearlitic microstructure characteristics in 1 wt.% carbon steels. The study was carried out using a combination of experimental methods and phase field simulations. We utilized MatCalc v5.51 and JMatPro v12 to predict transformation behaviors, and electron microscopy for microstructural examination, focusing on pearlite morphology under varying thermal conditions. Phase field simulations were carried out using MICRESS v7.2 software and, informed by thermodynamic data from MatCalc v5.51 and the literature, were conducted to replicate pearlite formation, demonstrating a good agreement with the experimental observations. In this work, we introduced a semi-automatic reliable microstructural analysis method, quantifying features like lamella dimensions and spacing through image processing by Fiji ImageJ v1.54f. The introduction of Cr resulted in longer, thinner, and more homogeneously distributed cementite lamellae, while Mo led to shorter, thicker lamellae. Phase field simulations accurately predicted these trends and showed that alloying with Cr or Mo increases the density and circularity of the lamellae. Our results demonstrate that Cr stabilizes pearlite formation, promoting a uniform microstructure, whereas Mo affects the morphology without enhancing homogeneity. The phase field model, validated by experimental data, provides insights into the morphological changes induced by these alloying elements, supporting the optimization of steel processing conditions. This paper uses a two-scale material modeling approach to investigate fatigue crack initiation and propagation of the material X10CrMoVNb9-1 (P91) under cyclic loading at room temperature. The Voronoi tessellation method was implemented to generate an artificial microstructure model at the microstructure level, and then, the finite element (FE) method was applied to identify different stress distributions. The stress distributions for multiple artificial microstructures was analyzed by using the physically based Tanaka–Mura model to estimate the number of cycles for crack initiation. Considering the prediction of macro-scale and long-term crack formation, the Paris law was utilized in this research. Experimental work on fatigue life with this material was performed, and good agreement was found with the results obtained in FE modeling. The number of cycles for fatigue crack propagation attains up to a maximum of 40% of the final fatigue lifetime with a typical value of 15% in many cases. This physically based two-scale technique significantly advances fatigue research, particularly in power plants, and paves the way for rapid and low-cost virtual material analysis and fatigue resistance analysis in the context of environmental fatigue applications. Erosion of metallic surfaces due to the permanent impact of high-speed water droplets is a significant concern in diverse industrial applications like turbine blades, among others. In the initial stage of water droplet erosion, there is an incubation regime with negligible mass loss whose duration is strongly dependent on water droplet sizes and velocities, the initial state of the surface, and the material properties of the target. The prediction of the incubation period duration is one of the main topics of research in the field. In this work, the interaction of the water droplets with a metallic surface is simulated using a hybrid Smoothed-Particle Hydrodynamics/Finite Element Method modeling scheme. The effect of multiple random impacts on representative target areas for certain ranges of impact angles and velocities was studied using a combination of simple material and damage models for the target surface of Ti-6Al-4V titanium alloy. The simulation is able to reproduce the main dependencies of the incubation regime and the first stages of water droplet erosion on the impact angle and velocity as reported in the literature. This framework can be considered a foundation for more advanced models with the goal of a better understanding of the physical mechanisms behind the incubation regime in order to devise strategies to extend it in real applications. In this study, material development, characterization, and sustainability assessment are performed on blends from recycled post-consumer commodity plastics for fused deposition modeling (FDM) filament extrusion. A recycled polyethylene terephthalate (rPET) and high-density polyethylene (rHDPE) blend 80:20 ratio is modified using three different methods: compatibilization with Maleic Anhydride, surface functionalization of PET with sodium dodecyl sulphate (SDS), and hybridization by combination of the two methods which is a novel approach. The selected blends were reinforced with chopped glass fibers and characterized. The printability of blends was assessed, and the dimensional accuracy of the prints was calculated. In addition, a cost estimation and comparison between the developed blends and the commercially available FDM filaments was carried out. Finally, life cycle assessment (LCA) was conducted for each prepared blend to facilitate the decision of the optimum blend in relation to mechanical properties and environmental performance and hence correlate the material, economic, and sustainability advantages. For over two decades, vascular stents have been widely used to treat clogged vessels, serving as a scaffold to enlarge the narrowed lumen and recover the arterial flow area. High-purity oligocrystalline austenitic steel is usually applied for the production of stents. Despite the popularity and benefit of stenting, it still may cause serious clinical adverse issues, such as in-stent restenosis and stent fracture. Therefore, the study of the mechanical properties of stents and in particular the prediction of their life cycles are in the focus of materials research. In our contribution, within the finite element method, a two-scale model of crack initiation in the microstructure of stents is elaborated. The approach is developed on the basis of the physically based Tanaka–Mura model (TMM), considering the evolution of shear bands during the crack initiation phase. The model allows for the analysis of the microstructure with respect to the life cycles of real materials. The effects of different loading conditions, grain orientation, and thickness of the specimen on Wöhler curves were analysed. It was found that the microstructural features of oligocrystals are very sensitive to different loading conditions with respect to their fatigue behaviour and play a major role in fatigue crack initiation. Different grain-orientation distributions result in qualitative and quantitative differences in stress distribution and in the number of cycles for crack initiation. It was found that presence of a neutral zone in the cut-out of the microstructure under three-point-bending loading conditions changes the qualitative and quantitative patterns of stress distribution and affects the number of cycles for crack initiation. It was found that under both tensile and bending loading conditions, thicker specimens require more cycles for crack initiation. The Wöhler curves for crack initiation in oligocrystalline microstructures of stents could be compared with the ones in the experiment, taking into account that for high cyclic fatigue (HCF), typically, more than 70% of the cycles refer to crack initiation. The current work investigates the auxetic tensile deformation behavior of the inversehoneycomb structure with 5 × 5 cells made of biodegradable poly(butylene adipate-coterephthalate) (PBAT). Fused deposition modeling, an additive manufacturing method, was used to produce such specimens. Residual stress (RS) and warpage, more or less, always exist in such specimens due to their layer-by-layer fabrication, i.e., repeated heating and cooling. The RS influences the auxetic deformation behavior, but its measurement is challenging due to its very fine structure. Instead, the finite-element (FE)-based process simulation realized using an ABAQUS plug-in numerically predicts the RS and warpage. The predicted warpage shows a negligibly slight deviation compared to the design topology. This process simulation also provides the temperature evolution of a small-volume material, revealing the effects of local cyclic heating and cooling. The achieved RS serves as the initial condition for the FE model used to investigate the auxetic tensile behavior. With the outcomes from FE calculation without consideration of the RS, the effect of the RS on the deformation behavior is discussed for the global force–displacement curve, the structural Poisson's ratio evolution, the deformed structural status, the stress distribution, and the evolution, where the first three and the warpage are also compared with the experimental results. Furthermore, the FE simulation can easily provide the global stress–strain flow curve with the total stress calculated from the elemental stresses. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
