The temporal resolution of adults' visual attention has been linked to the frequency of alpha-band oscillations in electroencephalogram (EEG) signal, with higher Peak Alpha Frequency (PAF) being associated with better visual temporal processing skills. However, relatively less is known about neural mechanisms underlying individual differences in the temporal resolution of visual attention in infancy. This study investigated the role of PAF in visual temporal processing in early infancy. In a sample of 6-month-old infants (n = 62) we examined the relationship between PAF extracted from resting-state EEG, and saccadic latencies in a predictive cueing task where the appearance of a reward was predicted by higher or lower frequency of two flickering objects. Results showed that higher PAF was associated with shorter saccadic latencies in a condition with higher differences between the two flickering frequencies, speaking for the involvement of PAF in visual temporal attention in early development. Additionally, we found that infants were generally faster to orient to the reward in trials where both peripheral stimuli were flickering at relatively lower frequencies, roughly corresponding to the theta frequency band. The sudden appearance of a visual distractor shortly before saccade initiation can capture spatial attention and modulate the saccade trajectory in spite of the ongoing execution of the initial plan to shift gaze straight to the saccade target. To elucidate the neural correlates underlying these curved saccades, we recorded from single neurons in the frontal eye field of two male rhesus monkeys shifting gaze to a target while a distractor with the same eccentricity appeared either left or right of the target at various delays after target presentation. We found that the population level of presaccadic activity of neurons representing the distractor location encoded the direction of the saccade trajectory. Stronger activity occurred when saccades curved toward the distractor, and weaker when saccades curved away. This relationship held whether the distractor was ipsilateral or contralateral to the recorded neurons. Meanwhile, visually responsive neurons showed asymmetrical patterns of excitatory responses that varied with the location of the distractor and the duration of distractor processing relating to attentional capture and distractor inhibition. During earlier distractor processing, neurons encoded curvature toward the distractor. During later distractor processing, neurons encoded curvature away from the distractor. This was observed when saccades curved away from distractors contralateral to the recording site and when saccades curved toward distractors ipsilateral to the recording site. Vision generates a stable representation of space by combining retinal input with internal predictions about the visual consequences of eye movements. We report a type of nonrigid motion that disrupts the connection between eye movements and perception, causing visual instability. This motion is accurately perceived during fixation, but it cannot be pursued. Catch-up saccades are accurately directed to the moving target but the motion stimulus appears to jump in space with each saccade. Our results reveal four major findings about perception and the visuomotor system: (i) Pursuit fails for certain types of motion; (ii) pursuit and catch-up saccades are independently controlled; (iii) prediction of saccade consequences is independent from saccade control; and (iv) the visual stability of moving objects relies on similar motion mechanisms as pursuit.

Acquisition of learned motor sequences involves saccades directed toward the goal to gather visual information prior to reaching. While goal-directed actions involve both eye and hand movements, the role of brain areas controlling saccades during motor sequence learning is still unclear. This study aimed to determine whether resting-state functional connectivity of oculomotor regions is associated with behavioral changes resulting from motor sequence learning. We investigated connectivity between oculomotor control regions and candidate regions involved in oculomotor control and motor sequence learning. Twenty adults had brain scans before 3 days of motor task practice and after a 24-hour retention test, which was used to assess sequence-specific learning. During testing, both saccades and reaches were tracked. Stronger connectivity in multiple oculomotor regions prior to motor task practice correlated with greater sequence-specific learning for both saccades and reaches. A more negative connectivity change involving oculomotor regions from pre- to post-training correlated with greater sequence-specific learning for both saccades and reaches. Humans use environmental context for facilitating object searches. The benefit of context for visual search requires learning. Modeling the learning process of context for efficient processing is vital to understanding visual function in everyday environments. We proposed a model that accounts for the contextual cueing effect, which refers to the learning effect of scene context to identify the location of a target item. The model extracted the global feature of a scene and gradually strengthened the relationship between the global feature and its target location with repeated observations. We compared the model and human performance with two visual search experiments (letter arrangements on a gray background or a natural scene). The proposed model successfully simulated the faster reduction of the number of saccades required before target detection for the natural scene background compared with the uniform gray background. We further tested whether the model replicated the known characteristics of the contextual cueing effect in terms of local learning around the target, the effect of the ratio of repeated and novel stimuli, and the superiority of natural scenes.

The neural mechanisms that willfully direct attention to specific locations in space are closely related to those for generating targeting eye movements (saccades). However, the degree to which the voluntary deployment of attention to a location necessarily activates a corresponding saccade plan remains unclear. One problem is that attention and saccades are both automatically driven by salient sensory events; another is that the underlying processes unfold within tens of milliseconds only. Here, we use an urgent task design to resolve the evolution of a visuomotor choice on a moment-by-moment basis while independently controlling the endogenous (goal-driven) and exogenous (salience-driven) contributions to performance. Human participants saw a peripheral cue and, depending on its color, either looked at it (prosaccade) or looked at a diametrically opposite, uninformative non-cue (antisaccade). By varying the luminance of the stimuli, the exogenous contributions could be cleanly dissociated from the endogenous process guiding the choice over time. According to the measured time courses, generating a correct antisaccade requires about 30 ms more processing time than generating a correct prosaccade based on the same perceptual signal. Eye tracking filters have been shown to improve accuracy of gaze estimation and input for stationary settings. However, their effectiveness during physical movement remains underexplored. In this work, we compare common online filters in the context of physical locomotion in extended reality and propose alterations to improve them for on-the-go settings. We conducted a computational experiment where we simulate performance of the online filters using data on participants attending visual targets located in world-, path-, and two head-based reference frames while standing, walking, and jogging. Our results provide insights into the filters' effectiveness and factors that affect it, such as the amount of noise caused by locomotion and differences in compensatory eye movements, and demonstrate that filters with saccade detection prove most useful for on-the-go settings. We discuss the implications of our findings and conclude with guidance on gaze data filtering for interaction in extended reality.

Background: White noise stimulation has demonstrated efficacy in enhancing working memory in children with ADHD. However, its impact on other executive functions commonly affected by ADHD, such as inhibitory control, remains largely unexplored. This research aims to explore the effects of two types of white noise stimulation on oculomotor inhibitory control in children with ADHD., Method: Memory guided saccade (MGS) and prolonged fixation (PF) performance was compared between children with ADHD ( N  = 52) and typically developing controls (TDC, N  = 45), during auditory and visual white noise stimulation as well as in a no noise condition., Results: Neither the auditory nor the visual white noise had any beneficial effects on performance for either group., Conclusions: White noise stimulation does not appear to be beneficial for children with ADHD in tasks that target oculomotor inhibitory control. Recent multiple action control studies have demonstrated difficulties with single-action (vs. dual-action) execution when accompanied by the requirement to inhibit a prepotent additional response (e.g., a highly automatic eye movement). Such a dual-action performance benefit is typically characterized by frequent false-positive executions of the currently unwarranted response. Here, we investigated whether the frequency of false-positive saccades is affected by the ease of translating a stimulus into a spatial oculomotor response (S-R translation ease): Is it harder to inhibit a saccade that is more automatically triggered via the stimulus? Participants switched on a trial-by-trial basis between executing a single saccade, a single manual button press, and a saccadic-manual dual action in response to a single visual stimulus. Importantly, we employed three different stimulus modes that varied in oculomotor S-R translation ease (peripheral square > central arrow > central shape). The hierarchy of S-R translation ease was reflected by increasing saccade and manual reaction times. Critically, however, the frequency of false-positive saccades in single manual trials was not substantially affected by the stimulus mode. Our results rule out explanations related to limited capacity sharing (between inhibitory control and S-R translation demands) as well as accounts related to the time available for the completion of saccade inhibition. Objective : Saccadic Intrusions (SIs) are abnormal eye movements during gaze fixation. Studies have indicated the clinical relevance of SIs, especially of square wave jerks (SWJ) in ALS. We used a software-based platform to extract SIs as a part of an interventional drug trial. The objective was to examine SIs' change over time as a potential biomarker of ALS disease progression. Methods : 28 ALS patients (61.95 ± 8.6 years) were assessed with the revised ALS Functional Rating Scale (ALSFRS-R) and with an oculometric test. Changes of SIs over time and correlations with ALSFRS-R and its bulbar subscale were calculated. A power calculation was conducted to understand the practical implications of results. Results : A significant increase of SWJ over trial duration was observed, with an increase in frequency (mean rise of 0.14 ± 0.28, p < 0.01), amplitude (0.001 ± 0.0016 degrees, p < 0.005), overall duration of SWJ (0.13 ± 0.25, in %, p < 0.01), and in their relative part out of all intrusions (0.18 ± 0.32, in %, p < 0.005). Negative correlations were found with the bulbar subscale (R=-0.43, -0.41, -0.39 and -0.47, respectively, p < 0.001). The required sample size for observing a 40% reduction in bulbar aspects when using the oculometric test (α = 0.05 and β = 0.8), was found to be 150 patients per arm, compared with 200 patients using the bulbar subscale. Conclusions : Evaluation of saccadic intrusions during fixation was able to detect disease progression over time, correlated with ALSFRS-R bulbar subscale. Eye movements can potentially serve as an objective biomarker in ALS clinical trials and reduce the required sample size to show clinical effect of therapies.

Participants in an eye-movement experiment performed a modified version of the Landolt-C paradigm (Williams & Pollatsek, 2007) to determine if there are preferred viewing locations when they searched for target squares embedded in linear arrays of spatially contiguous clusters of squares (i.e., sequences of one to four squares having missing segments of variable size and orientation). The results of this experiment indicate that, although the peaks of the single- and first-of-multiple-fixation landing-site distributions were respectively located near the centers and beginnings of the clusters, thereby replicating previous patterns that have been interpreted as evidence for the default saccadic-targeting hypothesis, the same dissociation was evident on nonclusters (i.e., arbitrarily defined regions of analysis). Furthermore, properties of the clusters (e.g., character number and gap size) influenced fixation durations and forward saccade length, suggesting that ongoing stimulus processing affects decisions about when and where (i.e., how far) to move the eyes. Finally, results of simulations using simple oculomotor-based, default-targeting, and dynamic-adjustment models indicated that the latter performed better than the other two, suggesting that the dynamic-adjustment strategy likely reflects the basic perceptual and motor constraints shared by a variety of visual tasks, rather than being specific to Chinese reading. Background: Borderline personality disorder (BPD) is associated with heightened impulsivity, evidenced by increased substance abuse, self-harm, and suicide attempts. Addressing impulsivity in individuals with BPD is a therapeutic objective, but its underlying neural basis in this clinical population remains unclear, partly due to its frequent comorbidity with attention-deficit/hyperactivity disorder (ADHD)., Methods: We used a response inhibition paradigm-the interleaved pro-/antisaccade task-among adolescents diagnosed with BPD with and without comorbid ADHD (n = 25 and n = 24, respectively) during concomitant video-based eye tracking. We quantified various eye movement response parameters reflective of impulsive action during the task, including delay to fixation acquisition, fixation breaks, anticipatory saccades, and direction errors with express saccade (saccade reaction time: 90-140 ms) and regular saccade latencies (saccade reaction time > 140 ms)., Results: Individuals with BPD exhibited deficient response preparation, as evidenced by reduced visual fixation on task cues and greater variability of saccade responses (i.e., saccade reaction time and peak velocity). The ADHD/BPD group shared these traits and made more anticipatory responses and direction errors with express saccade latencies and reduced error correction., Conclusions: Saccadic deficits in BPD and ADHD/BPD stemmed not from an inability to execute antisaccades but rather from inadequate preparation for the upcoming task set. These distinctions may arise due to abnormal signaling in cortical areas like the frontal eye fields, posterior parietal cortex, and anterior cingulate cortex. Many studies have attempted to identify the root cause of dyslexia. Different theories of dyslexia have proposed either a phonological, attentional, or visual deficit. While research has used eye-tracking to study dyslexia, only two previous studies have used the moving-window paradigm to explore the perceptual span in dyslexic reading, and none have done so in visual search. The present study analysed the perceptual span using both reading and visual search tasks to identify language-independent attentional impairments in dyslexics. We found equivocal evidence that the perceptual span was impaired in dyslexic reading and no evidence of impairment in visual search. However, dyslexic participants did show deficits in the visual search task, with lower search accuracy and shorter saccades compared with controls. Saccade accommodation is a productive model for exploring the role of the cerebellum in behavioral plasticity. In this model, the target is moved during the saccade, gradually inducing a change in the saccade vector as the animal adapts. The climbing fiber pathway from the inferior olive provides a visual error signal generated by the superior colliculus that is believed to be crucial for cerebellar adaptation. However, the primate tecto-olivary pathway has only been explored using large injections of the central portion of the superior colliculus. To provide a more detailed picture, we have made injections of anterograde tracers into various regions of the macaque superior colliculus. As shown previously, large central injections primarily label a dense terminal field within the C subdivision at caudal end of the contralateral medial inferior olive. Several, previously unobserved, sites of sparse terminal labeling were noted: bilaterally in the dorsal cap of Kooy and ipsilaterally in the C subdivision of the medial inferior olive. Small, physiologically directed, injections into the rostral, small saccade portion of the superior colliculus produced terminal fields in the same regions of the medial inferior olive, but with decreased density. Small injections of the caudal superior colliculus, where large amplitude gaze changes are encoded, again labeled a terminal field located in the same areas. The lack of a topographic pattern within the main tecto-olivary projection suggests that either the precise vector of the visual error is not transmitted to the vermis, or that encoding of this error is via non-topographic means., (© 2024. Maintaining stable gaze while tracking moving objects is commonplace across animal taxa, yet how diverse ecological needs impact these processes is poorly understood. During flight, the fruit-eating fly Drosophila melanogaster maintains course by making smooth steering adjustments to fixate the image of the distant visual background on the retina, while executing body saccades to investigate nearby objects such as food sources. Cactophilic Drosophila mojavensis live where there is no canopy; rather, the flora forming visual "background" and "objects" are one and the same. We tested whether D. mojavensis have adapted their flight control strategies for a visually sparse landscape. We used a magnetic tether that allows free movement in the yaw axis. In response to a textured bar moving across a similarly textured stationary background, D. melanogaster fixates the background, thereby stabilizing gaze while integrating bar dynamics to trigger tracking saccades. By contrast, two mojavensis subspecies in the repleta subgroup and one species in the melanogaster subgroup steer to smoothly fixate the bar, seemingly ignoring the stationary surround. Desert flies execute frequent bar-tracking saccades, but theirs are triggered when rotational velocity lags the bar. Thus, D. melanogaster, which lives in visually cluttered cosmopolitan habitats, leverages the optical disparities between nearby objects and distant foliage for a hybrid control strategy: "ground-fixate, object-saccade." Eye movement as a neurobiological biomarker of schizophrenia. We aim to estimate diagnostic accuracy of integrated pro/antisaccade eye movement measurements to discriminate between healthy individuals and schizophrenic patients. We compared the eye movement performance of 85 healthy individuals and 116 schizophrenia-stable patients during prosaccade and antisaccade tasks. The difference eye movement measurements were accumulated by stepwise discriminant analysis to produce an integrated score. Finally, the diagnostic value of the integrated score was calculated by the receiver operating characteristic (ROC) area under the curve (AUC), and the best sensitivity and specificity were calculated based on the given cutoff values. Using discriminant analysis, an integrated score included the residual gain and latency (step) during the prosaccade test, the error rate, and the corrected error rate during the antisaccade test. We found that the integrated score could well classify schizophrenia patients and healthy individuals with an accuracy of 80.6%. In the ROC, Youden's index was 0.634 (sensitivity = 81.0%, specificity = 82.4%) and AUC was 0.871. There were significant difference patterns of correlation between the severity of psychiatric symptoms and daily functioning and diagnostic eye movement measurements. Using only 2 saccade tasks to discriminate well between schizophrenia patients and healthy controls, suggesting that abnormalities in saccade behavior is a potential biomarker and efficient diagnostic tool for identifying schizophrenia. Saccades are rapid eye movements that are used by all species with good vision. In this study, we set out to characterize the complete repertoire of larval zebrafish horizontal saccades to gain insight into their contributions to visually guided behavior and underlying neural control. We identified five saccade types, defined by systematic differences in kinematics and binocular coordination, which were differentially expressed across a variety of behavioral contexts. Conjugate saccades formed a large group that serves at least four functions. These include fast phases of the optokinetic nystagmus, visual scanning in stationary animals, and shifting gaze in coordination with body turns. In addition, we discovered a previously undescribed pattern of eye-body coordination in which small conjugate saccades partially oppose head rotation to maintain gaze during forward locomotion. Convergent saccades were coordinated with body movements to foveate prey targets during hunting. Detailed kinematic analysis showed that conjugate and convergent saccades differed in the millisecond coordination of the eyes and body and followed distinct velocity main sequence relationships. Foveal and peripheral vision are two distinct modes of visual processing essential for navigating the world. However, it remains unclear if they engage different neural mechanisms and circuits within the visual attentional system. Here, we trained macaques to perform a free-gaze visual search task using natural face and object stimuli and recorded a large number of 14588 visually responsive units from a broadly distributed network of brain regions involved in visual attentional processing. Foveal and peripheral units had substantially different proportions across brain regions and exhibited systematic differences in encoding visual information and visual attention. The spike-local field potential (LFP) coherence of foveal units was more extensively modulated by both attention and visual selectivity, thus indicating differential engagement of the attention and visual coding network compared to peripheral units. Furthermore, we delineated the interaction and coordination between foveal and peripheral processing for spatial attention and saccade selection. Before selecting a saccadic target, we often acquire partial information about the location of the forthcoming target and preselect a region of visual space even before the target becomes visible. To determine whether the supplementary eye field (SEF) represents information signifying the potential target space, we examined neuronal activity in the SEF of monkeys performing a behavioral task designed to isolate the process of visuospatial preselection under uncertainty from the process of selecting a specified location. Our data showed that the activity of SEF neurons represented information about the potential target space instructed by symbolic cues. Increased activity of visuospatially selective SEF neurons encoded the potential target space, which could be a mechanism facilitating subsequent selection of an appropriate target. Furthermore, electrical stimulation of the SEF during the preselection period disrupted subsequent target selection. When we view the world, our eyes saccade quickly between points of interest. Even when fixating a target our eyes are not completely at rest but execute small fixational eye movements (FEMs). That vision is not blurred despite this ever-present jitter has seemingly motivated an increasingly popular theory denying the reliance of the visual system on pure spatial processing in favor of a space-to-time mechanism generated by the eye drifting across the image. Accordingly, FEMs are not detrimental but rather essential to good visibility. However, the space-to-time theory is incompatible with physiological data showing that all information is conveyed by the short neural volleys generated when the eyes land on a target, and with our faithful perception of briefly displayed objects, during which time FEMs have no effect. Another difficulty in rejecting the idea of image representation by the locations and nature of responding cells in favor of a timecode, is that somewhere, somehow, this code must be decoded into a parallel spatial one when reaching perception. Thus, in addition to the implausibility of generating meaningful responses during retinal drift, the space-to-time hypothesis calls for replacing efficient point-to-point parallel transmission with a cumbersome, delayed, space-to-time-to-space process. A novel physiological framework is presented here wherein the ability of the visual system to quickly process information is mediated by the short, powerful neural volleys generated by the landing saccades. These volleys are necessary and sufficient for normal perception without FEMs contribution. This mechanism enables our excellent perception of brief stimuli and explains that visibility is not blurred by FEMs because they do not generate useful information.

A prominent aspect of primate lateral prefrontal cortex organization is its division into several cytoarchitecturally distinct subregions. Neurophysiological investigations in macaques have provided evidence for the functional specialization of these subregions, but an understanding of the relative representational topography of sensory, social, and cognitive processes within them remains elusive. One explanatory factor is that evidence for functional specialization has been compiled largely from a patchwork of findings across studies, in many animals, and with considerable variation in stimulus sets and tasks. Here, we addressed this by leveraging the common marmoset (Callithrix jacchus) to carry out large-scale neurophysiological mapping of the lateral prefrontal cortex using high-density microelectrode arrays, and a diverse suite of test stimuli including faces, marmoset calls, and spatial working memory task. Task-modulated units and units responsive to visual and auditory stimuli were distributed throughout the lateral prefrontal cortex, while those with saccade-related activity or face-selective responses were restricted to 8aV, 8aD, 10, 46 V, and 47. Neurons with contralateral visual receptive fields were limited to areas 8aV and 8aD. Microsaccades are known to be associated with a deficit in perceptual detection performance for brief probe flashes presented in their temporal vicinity. However, it is still not clear how such a deficit might depend on the visual environment across which microsaccades are generated. Here, and motivated by studies demonstrating an interaction between visual background image appearance and perceptual suppression strength associated with large saccades, we probed peripheral perceptual detection performance of human subjects while they generated microsaccades over three different visual backgrounds. Subjects fixated near the center of a low spatial frequency grating, a high spatial frequency grating, or a small white fixation spot over an otherwise gray background. When a computer process detected a microsaccade, it presented a brief peripheral probe flash at one of four locations (over a uniform gray background) and at different times. After collecting full psychometric curves, we found that both perceptual detection thresholds and slopes of psychometric curves were impaired for peripheral flashes in the immediate temporal vicinity of microsaccades, and they recovered with later flash times. Importantly, the threshold elevations, but not the psychometric slope reductions, were stronger for the white fixation spot than for either of the two gratings. Thus, like with larger saccades, microsaccadic suppression strength can show a certain degree of image dependence. However, unlike with larger saccades, stronger microsaccadic suppression did not occur with low spatial frequency textures. This observation might reflect the different spatiotemporal retinal transients associated with the small microsaccades in our study versus larger saccades.

Theories of reading posit that decisions about "where" and "when" to move the eyes are driven by visual and linguistic factors, extracted from the perceptual span and word identification span, respectively. We tested this hypothesized dissociation by masking, outside of a visible window, either the spaces between the words (to assess the perceptual span, Experiment 1) or the letters within the words (to assess the word identification span, Experiment 2). We also investigated whether deaf readers' previously reported larger reading span was specifically linked to one of these spans. We analyzed reading rate to test overall reading efficiency, as well as average saccade length to test "where" decisions and average fixation duration to test "when" decisions. Both hearing and deaf readers' perceptual spans extended between 10 and 14 characters, and their word identification spans extended to eight characters to the right of fixation. Despite similar sized rightward spans, deaf readers read more efficiently overall and showed a larger increase in reading rate when leftward text was available, suggesting they attend more to leftward information. Neither rightward span was specifically related to where or when decisions for either group. Our results challenge the assumed dissociation between type of reading span and type of saccade decision and indicate that reading efficiency requires access to both perceptual and linguistic information in the parafovea. To encode allocentric space information of a viewing object, it is important to relate perceptual information in the first-person perspective to the representation of an entire scene which would be constructed before. A substantial number of studies investigated the constructed scene information (e.g., cognitive map). However, only few studies have focused on its influence on perceptual processing. Therefore, we designed a visually guided saccade task requiring monkeys to gaze at objects in different locations on different backgrounds clipped from large self-designed mosaic pictures (parental pictures). In each trial, we presented moving backgrounds prior to object presentations, indicating a frame position of the background image on a parental picture. We recorded single-unit activities from 377 neurons in the posterior inferotemporal (PIT) cortex of two macaques. Equivalent numbers of neurons showed space-related (119 of 377) and object-related (125 of 377) information. The space-related neurons coded the gaze locations and background images jointly rather than separately. These results suggest that PIT neurons represent a particular location within a particular background image. Interestingly, frame positions of background images on parental pictures modulated the space-related responses dependently on parental pictures. Glaucoma is a progressive optic neuropathic disorder that significantly impacts the activities of daily life (ADLs) of individuals. Emerging studies indicate degenerative changes in cortical and subcortical regions in individuals with glaucoma, which are associated with cognitive processes and oculomotor control. Cognitive processes involving top-down processes such as attention, planning, task management and execution, are crucial for meeting the demands of everyday tasks, and are affected in glaucoma. This study investigated the executive functions, specifically inhibitory control (IC) and working memory (WM), in individuals with glaucoma compared to age-matched controls, using eye movements. This was achieved through four tasks sensitive to executive functions, including antisaccade, memory-guided prosaccade and antisaccade, and the Go-NoGo tasks. Saccadic eye-movement parameters were also assessed in a prosaccade task, considered as a control condition with minimal IC and WM load. The results indicated that glaucoma is associated with changes in both IC and WM. Increased anticipatory saccadic errors might be linked to inhibitory deficiencies during the preparatory stage of the saccadic suppression mechanism. The increased omission errors in the antisaccade task might be due to the lack of regulation of the WM component. Recent research on healthy individuals suggests that the valence of emotional stimuli influences behavioral reactions only when relevant to ongoing tasks, as they impact reaching arm movements and gait only when the emotional content cued the responses. However, it has been suggested that emotional expressions elicit automatic gaze shifting, indicating that oculomotor behavior might differ from that of the upper and lower limbs. To investigate, 40 participants underwent two Go/No-go tasks, an emotion discrimination task (EDT) and a gender discrimination task (GDT). In the EDT, participants had to perform a saccade to a peripheral target upon the presentation of angry or happy faces and refrain from moving with neutral ones. In the GDT, the same images were shown, but participants responded based on the posers' gender. Participants displayed two behavioral strategies: a single saccade to the target (92.7%) or two saccades (7.3%), with the first directed at a task-salient feature, that is, the mouth in the EDT and the nose-eyes regions in the GDT. In both cases, the valence of facial expression impacted the saccades only when relevant to the response. Adaptation of reactive saccades (RS), made toward the sudden appearance of stimuli in our environment, is a plastic mechanism thought to occur at the motor level of saccade generation. As saccadic oculomotor commands integrate multisensory information in the parietal cortex and superior colliculus, adaptation of RS should occur not only toward visual but also tactile targets. In addition, saccadic adaptation in one modality (vision or touch) should transfer cross-modally. To test these predictions, we used the double-step target paradigm to adapt rightward saccades made at two different eccentricities toward the participants' index and middle fingers, identified either visually ( experiment 1 ) or tactually ( experiment 2 ). In each experiment, the rate of adaptation induced for the adapted modality and the rate of adaptation transfer to the nonadapted modality were compared with that measured in a control (no adaptation) session. Results revealed that touch-triggered RS can be adapted as well as visually triggered ones. Moreover, the transfer pattern was asymmetric: visual saccadic adaptation transferred fully to tactile saccades, whereas tactile saccadic adaptation, despite full generalization to nonadapted fingers, transferred only partially to visual saccades. These findings disclose that in the case of tactile saccades, adaptation can be elicited in the absence of postsaccadic visual feedback. In addition, the asymmetric adaptation transfer across sensory modalities suggests that the adaptation locus for tactile saccades may occur in part upstream of the final motor pathway common to all saccades. These findings bring new insights both on the functional loci(us) and on the error signals of RS adaptation. NEW & NOTEWORTHY The present study revealed that, as predicted from a large literature, adaptation of visual reactive saccades transfers to tactile saccades of the same as well as neighboring amplitudes. Furthermore, in a modified double-step target paradigm, tactile saccades exposed to repeated errors adapt with a similar rate and spatial generalization as visual saccades, but this adaptation only slightly transfers to visual saccades. These findings bring new information on saccadic adaptation processes.

Objectives: The antisaccades (AS) task is considered a reliable indicator of inhibitory control of eye movements in humans. Achieving good AS performance requires efficient cognitive processes that are sensitive to changes in brain structure. White matter hyperintensities (WMH) can cause subcortical-cortical dysconnectivity, affecting diverse cognitive domains. Thus, the AS task was investigated in patients with WMH in cerebral small vessel disease (CSVD)., Methods: In this retrospective study, 75 participants with WMH, determined by neuroimaging standards for CSVD research, were admitted to the Department of Neurology of Beijing Luhe Hospital, Capital Medical University from January 2021 to December 2022. All subjects underwent the AS task, Montreal Cognitive Assessment (MoCA), Mini-Mental State Examination (MMSE), and 3.0T brain MRI. Additionally, 61 healthy subjects were recruited to characterize WMH profiles., Results: Compared to the control group, patients with WMH had a significantly increased AS error rate (49.81%, p  = 0.001) and lower gain (76.00%, p  = 0.042). The AS error rate was significantly higher in patients with WMH in the frontal lobe than in those without WMH ( p  = 0.004). After adjusting for confounders (age), a positive correlation was found between the AS error rate and MoCA scores for patients with WMH (coefficient = 0.262, p  = 0.024)., Conclusions: Patients with WMH due to CSVD exhibited abnormal AS performances, particularly in the frontal lobe. The eye movement paradigms, the new diagnostic forms in neurology, can be utilized to investigate the distributed cortical and subcortical systems involved in cognitive control processes, offering simple, well-tolerated and highly sensitive advantages over traditional measures.

Working memory (WM) is a cognitive system with limited capacity that can temporarily store and process information. The purpose of this study was to investigate functional connectivity based on phase synchronization during WM and its relationship with the behavioral response. In this regard, we recorded EEG/Eye tracking data of seventeen healthy subjects while performing a memory-guided saccade (MGS) task with two different positions (near eccentricity and far eccentricity). We computed saccade error as memory performance and measured functional connectivity using Phase Locking Value (PLV) in the alpha frequency band (8-12 Hz). The results showed that PLV is negatively correlated with saccade error. Our finding indicated that during the maintenance period, PLV between the frontal and visual area in trials with low saccade error increased significantly compared to trials with high saccade error. Furthermore, we observed a significant difference between PLV for near and far conditions in the delay period. This meta-analysis examined inhibitory control performance in the antisaccade task across mental disorders. Following PRISMA guidelines, we analyzed data from k = 146 studies (n = 13,807 participants) on antisaccade performance. Effect sizes were estimated using random-effects models and restricted maximum-likelihood estimation, with robustness tests for study heterogeneity and publication bias. Most disorders displayed elevated error rates, with schizophrenia showing the greatest impairments, followed by autism spectrum disorder, bipolar disorder and attention deficit hyperactivity disorder. Small to medium impairments were also found in eating disorders, major depressive disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder and substance use disorder. Results were robust against corrections for publication bias and largely unaffected by confounding variables. Prolonged latencies were observed in schizophrenia, attention deficit hyperactivity disorder, bipolar disorder and obsessive compulsive disorder, with smaller and less robust effect sizes. Results indicate inhibitory control deficits in the antisaccade task across mental disorders, especially evident for error rates. Image content is prioritized in the visual system. Faces are a paradigmatic example, receiving preferential processing along the visual pathway compared to other visual stimuli. Moreover, face prioritization manifests also in behavior. People tend to look at faces more frequently and for longer periods, and saccadic reaction times can be faster when targeting a face as opposed to a phase-scrambled control. However, it is currently not clear at which stage image content affects oculomotor planning and execution. It can be hypothesized that image content directly influences oculomotor signal generation. Alternatively, the image content could exert its influence on oculomotor planning and execution at a later stage, after the image has been processed. Here we aim to disentangle these two alternative hypotheses by measuring the frequency of saccades toward a visual target when the latter is followed by a visual transient in the central visual field. Behaviorally, this paradigm leads to a reduction in saccade frequency that happens about 90 ms after any visual transient event, also known as saccadic "inhibition". In two experiments, we measured occurrence of saccades in visually guided saccades as well as microsaccades during fixation, using face and noise-matched visual stimuli. We observed that while the reduction in saccade occurrence was similar for both stimulus types, face stimuli lead to a prolonged reduction in eye movements. Moreover, saccade kinematics were altered by both stimulus types, showing an amplitude reduction without change in peak velocity for the earliest saccades. Taken together, our experiments imply that face stimuli primarily affect the later stages of the behavioral phenomenon of saccadic "inhibition". We propose that while some stimulus features are processed at an early stage and can quickly influence eye movements, a delayed signal conveying image content information is necessary to further inhibit/delay activity in the oculomotor system to trigger eye movements., (© 2024. The subthalamic nucleus (STN) plays critical roles in the motor and cognitive function of the basal ganglia (BG), but the exact nature of these roles is not fully understood, especially in the context of decision-making based on uncertain evidence. Guided by theoretical predictions of specific STN contributions, we used single-unit recording and electrical microstimulation in the STN of healthy monkeys to assess its causal, computational roles in visual-saccadic decisions based on noisy evidence. The recordings identified subpopulations of STN neurons with distinct task-related activity patterns that related to different theoretically predicted functions. Microstimulation caused changes in behavioral choices and response times that reflected multiple contributions to an 'accumulate-to-bound'-like decision process, including modulation of decision bounds and evidence accumulation, and to non-perceptual processes. Our interest was to evaluate changes in fixation duration as a function of time-on-task (TOT) during a random saccade task. We employed a large, publicly available dataset. The frequency histogram of fixation durations was multimodal and modelled as a Gaussian mixture. For this specific task, we found five fixation types. The "ideal" response would be a single accurate saccade after each target movement, with a typical saccade latency of 200-250 msec, followed by a long fixation (> 800 msec) until the next target jump. We found fixations like this, but they comprised only 10% of all fixations and were the first fixation after target movement only 23.4% of the time. More frequently (57.4% of the time), the first fixation after target movement was short (117.7 msec mean) and was commonly followed by a corrective saccade. Across the entire 100 sec of the task, median total fixation duration decreased. This decrease was approximated with a power law fit with R2 = 0.94. A detailed examination of the frequency of each of our five fixation types over time on task (TOT) revealed that the three shortest duration fixation types became more and more frequent with TOT whereas the two longest fixations became less and less frequent. In all cases, the changes over TOT followed power law relationships, with R2 values between 0.73 and 0.93. We concluded that, over the 100 second duration of our task, long fixations are common in the first 15 to 22 seconds but become less common after that. Short fixations are relatively uncommon in the first 15 to 22 seconds but become more and more common as the task progressed. Apparently. the ability to produce an ideal response, although somewhat likely in the first 22 seconds, rapidly declines. The analysis of eye movements has proven valuable for understanding brain function and the neuropathology of various disorders. This research aims to utilize eye movement data analysis as a screening tool for differentiation between eight different groups of pathologies, including scholar, neurologic, and postural disorders. Leveraging a dataset from 20 clinical centers, all employing AIDEAL and REMOBI eye movement technologies this study extends prior research by considering a multi-annotation setting, incorporating information from recordings from saccade and vergence eye movement tests, and using contextual information (e.g. target signals and latency of the eye movement relative to the target and confidence level of the quality of eye movement recording) to improve accuracy while reducing noise interference. Additionally, we introduce a novel hybrid architecture that combines the weight-sharing feature of convolution layers with the long-range capabilities of the transformer architecture to improve model efficiency and reduce the computation cost by a factor of 3.36, while still being competitive in terms of macro F1 score. Evaluated on two diverse datasets, our method demonstrates promising results, the most powerful discrimination being Attention & Neurologic; with a macro F1 score of up to 78.8%; disorder. Contrast sensitivity (CS), which constrains human vision, decreases from fovea to periphery, from the horizontal to the vertical meridian, and from the lower vertical to the upper vertical meridian. It also depends on spatial frequency (SF), and the contrast sensitivity function (CSF) depicts this relation. To compensate for these visual constraints, we constantly make saccades and foveate on relevant objects in the scene. Already before saccade onset, presaccadic attention shifts to the saccade target and enhances perception. However, it is unknown whether and how it modulates the interplay between CS and SF, and if this effect varies around polar angle meridians. CS enhancement may result from a horizontal or vertical shift of the CSF, increase in bandwidth, or any combination. In addition, presaccadic attention could enhance CS similarly around the visual field, or it could benefit perception more at locations with poorer performance (i.e., vertical meridian). Here, we investigated these possibilities by extracting key attributes of the CSF of human observers. The results reveal that presaccadic attention (1) increases CS across SF, (2) increases the most preferred and the highest discernable SF, and (3) narrows the bandwidth. Therefore, presaccadic attention helps bridge the gap between presaccadic and postsaccadic input by increasing visibility at the saccade target. Counterintuitively, this CS enhancement was more pronounced where perception is better-along the horizontal than the vertical meridian-exacerbating polar angle asymmetries. The presaccadic preview of a peripheral target enhances the efficiency of its postsaccadic processing, termed the extrafoveal preview effect. Peripheral visual performance-and thus the quality of the preview-varies around the visual field, even at isoeccentric locations: It is better along the horizontal than vertical meridian and along the lower than upper vertical meridian. To investigate whether these polar angle asymmetries influence the preview effect, we asked human participants to preview four tilted gratings at the cardinals, until a central cue indicated which one to saccade to. During the saccade, the target orientation either remained or slightly changed (valid/invalid preview). After saccade landing, participants discriminated the orientation of the (briefly presented) second grating. Stimulus contrast was titrated with adaptive staircases to assess visual performance. Expectedly, valid previews increased participants' postsaccadic contrast sensitivity. This preview benefit, however, was inversely related to polar angle perceptual asymmetries; largest at the upper, and smallest at the horizontal meridian. This finding reveals that the visual system compensates for peripheral asymmetries when integrating information across saccades, by selectively assigning higher weights to the less-well perceived preview information. Humans explore visual scenes by alternating short fixations with saccades directing the fovea to points of interest. During fixation, the visual system not only examines the foveal stimulus at high resolution, but it also processes the extrafoveal input to plan the next saccade. Although foveal analysis and peripheral selection occur in parallel, little is known about the temporal dynamics of foveal and peripheral processing upon saccade landing, during fixation. Here we investigate whether the ability to localize changes across the visual field differs depending on when the change occurs during fixation, and on whether the change localization involves foveal, extrafoveal processing, or both. Our findings reveal that the ability to localize changes in peripheral areas of the visual field improves as a function of time after fixation onset, whereas localization accuracy for foveal stimuli remains approximately constant. Importantly, this pattern holds regardless of whether individuals monitor only foveal or peripheral stimuli, or both simultaneously. Our aim in this study was to understand how we perform visuospatial comparison tasks by analyzing ocular behavior and to examine how restrictions in macular or peripheral vision disturb ocular behavior and task performance. Two groups of 18 healthy participants with normal or corrected visual acuity performed visuospatial comparison tasks (computerized version of the elementary visuospatial perception [EVSP] test) (Pisella et al., 2013) with a gaze-contingent mask simulating either tubular vision (first group) or macular scotoma (second group). After these simulations of pathological conditions, all participants also performed the EVSP test in full view, enabling direct comparison of their oculomotor behavior and performance. In terms of oculomotor behavior, compared with the full view condition, alternation saccades between the two objects to compare were less numerous in the absence of peripheral vision, whereas the number of within-object exploration saccades decreased in the absence of macular vision. The absence of peripheral vision did not affect accuracy except for midline judgments, but the absence of central vision impaired accuracy across all visuospatial subtests. Besides confirming the crucial role of the macula for visuospatial comparison tasks, these experiments provided important insights into how sensory disorder modifies oculomotor behavior with or without consequences on performance accuracy.

The regulation of emotions is a crucial facet of well-being and social adaptability, with explicit strategies receiving primary attention in prior research. Recent studies, however, emphasize the role of implicit emotion regulation, particularly implicating the ventromedial prefrontal cortex (VMPFC) in association with its implementation. This study delves into the nuanced role of the VMPFC through focality-optimized multichannel transcranial direct current stimulation (tDCS), shedding light on its causal involvement in implicit reappraisal. The primary goal was to evaluate the effectiveness of VMFPC-targeted tDCS and elucidate its role in individuals with high trait anxiety. Participants engaged in implicit and explicit emotion regulation tasks during multichannel tDCS targeting the VMPFC. The outcome measures encompassed negative emotion ratings, pupillary diameter, and saccade count, providing a comprehensive evaluation of emotion regulation efficiency. The intervention exhibited a notable impact, resulting in significant reductions in negative emotion ratings and pupillary reactions during implicit reappraisal, highlighting the indispensable role of the VMPFC in modulating emotional responses. Notably, these effects demonstrated sustained efficacy up to 1 day postintervention. This study underscores the potency of VMPFC-targeted multichannel tDCS in augmenting implicit emotion regulation. This not only contributes insights into the neural mechanisms of emotion regulation but also suggests innovative therapeutic avenues for anxiety disorders. Effective attention control is essential for behavioral adaptation to different environmental contexts. In Post-traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD) altered attention has been described in trauma-related and other emotional contexts. Nevertheless, atypical attention is also seen with neutral stimuli. The mechanisms of attention alterations in PTSD associated with neutral stimuli are poorly understood. The present study investigates alerting and orienting responses in PTSD participants using emotionally neutral stimuli in a saccade eye movement task incorporating both spatially predictable and temporally unpredictable conditions. We studied 23 PTSD patients and 27 Non-PTSD controls, using repeated-measures mixed modeling to estimate group and task condition differences in behavioral and psychophysiological measures. We explored the relationships among saccade characteristics, pupil size, and PTSD symptoms, including CAPS hypervigilance scores. PTSD, compared to Non-PTSD, participants showed differences in their saccade 'main sequence', reflected by higher peak velocities adjusted for amplitude. PTSD participants had smaller primary position errors in the unpredictable saccade condition. They also exhibited greater hyperarousal, reflected by larger pupil size during fixation that was greater in the unpredictable condition. Our results suggest that a heightened state of arousal and hypervigilance in PTSD leads to a state of atypical attention bias, even in emotionally neutral contexts. These differences may reflect higher saccade vigor. This review explores the role of the antisaccadic task in understanding inhibitory mechanisms in basal ganglia disorders. It conducts a comparative analysis of saccadic profiles in conditions such as Parkinson's disease, Tourette syndrome, obsessive-compulsive disorder, Huntington's disease, and dystonia, revealing distinct patterns and proposing mechanisms for impaired performance. The primary focus is on two inhibitory mechanisms: global, pre-emptive inhibition responsible for suppressing prepotent responses, and slower, selective response inhibition. The antisaccadic task demonstrates practicality in clinical applications, aiding in differential diagnoses, treatment monitoring and reflecting gait control. Noise is a ubiquitous component of motor systems that leads to behavioral variability of all types of movements. Nonetheless, systems-based models investigating human movements are generally deterministic and explain only the central tendencies like mean trajectories. In this paper, a novel approach to modeling kinematic variability of movements is presented and tested on the oculomotor system. This approach reconciles the two prominent philosophies of saccade control: displacement-based control versus velocity-based control. This was achieved by quantifying the variability in saccadic eye movements and developing a stochastic model of its control. The proposed stochastic dual model generated significantly better fits of inter-trial variances of the saccade trajectories compared to existing models. These results suggest that the saccadic system can flexibly use the information of both desired displacement and velocity for its control. It is well known that attention is captured by salient objects or events. The notion that attention is attracted by salience information present in the visual field is also at the heart of many influential models of attention. These models typically posit a hierarchy of saliency, suggesting that attention progresses from the most to the least salient item in the visual field. However, despite the significance of this claim in various models, research on eye movements challenges the idea that search strictly follows this saliency hierarchy. Instead, eye-tracking studies have suggested that saliency information has a transient impact, only influencing the initial saccade toward the most salient object, and only if executed swiftly after display onset. While these findings on overt eye movements are important, they do not address covert attentional processes occurring before a saccade is initiated. In the current series of experiments, we explored whether there was evidence for secondary capture-whether attention could be captured by another salient item after the initial capture episode. To explore this, we utilized displays with multiple distractors of varying levels of saliency. Our primary question was whether two distractors with different saliency levels would disrupt search more than a single, highly salient distractor. Across three experiments, clear evidence emerged indicating that two distractors interfered more with search than a single salient distractor. This observation suggests that following initial capture, secondary capture by the next most salient distractor occurred. Objective: Video-based eye tracking was used to investigate saccade, pupil, and blink abnormalities among patients with Huntington's disease (HD) who watched sequences of short videos. HD, an autosomal dominant neurodegenerative disorder resulting from a CAG mutation on chromosome 4, produces motor and cognitive impairments including slow or irregular eye movements, which have been studied using structured tasks., Methods: To explore how HD affects eye movements under instruction free conditions, we assessed 22 HD patients and their age matched controls in a 10-minute video-based free viewing task., Results: Patients with HD experienced a significant reduction in saccade exploration rate following video clip transitions, an increase in pupil reactions to luminance changes after clip transitions, and a significant higher blink rate throughout the task compared to the control group., Conclusions: These results show that HD has a significant impact on how patients visually explore and respond to their environment under unconstrained and ecologically natural conditions., Significance: Eye tracking in HD patients revealed saccadic, pupil, and blink abnormalities in early HD patients, suggestive of brain circuitry abnormalities that probably involve brain stem deficits. Objective: To date the vast majority of research in the visual neurosciences have been forced to adopt a highly constrained perspective of the vision system in which stimuli are processed in an open-loop reactive fashion (i.e., abrupt stimulus presentation followed by an evoked neural response). While such constraints enable high construct validity for neuroscientific investigation, the primary outcomes have been a reductionistic approach to isolate the component processes of visual perception. In electrophysiology, of the many neural processes studied under this rubric, the most well-known is, arguably, the P300 evoked response. There is, however, relatively little known about the real-world corollary of this component in free-viewing paradigms where visual stimuli are connected to neural function in a closed-loop. While growing evidence suggests that neural activity analogous to the P300 does occur in such paradigms, it is an open question when this response occurs and what behavioral or environmental factors could be used to isolate this component., Approach: The current work uses convolutional networks to decode neural signals during a free-viewing visual search task in a closed-loop paradigm within an open-world virtual environment. From the decoded activity we construct fixation-locked response profiles that enable estimations of the variable latency of any P300 analogue around the moment of fixation. We then use these estimates to investigate which factors best reduce variable latency and, thus, predict the onset time of the response. We consider measurable, search-related factors encompassing top-down (i.e., goal driven) and bottom-up (i.e., stimulus driven) processes, such as fixation duration and salience. We also consider saccade size as an intermediate factor reflecting the integration of these two systems., Main Results: The results show that of these factors only saccade size reliably determines the onset time of P300 analogous activity for this task. Specifically, we find that for large saccades the variability in response onset is small enough to enable analysis using traditional ensemble averaging methods., Significance: The results show that P300 analogous activity does occur during closed-loop, free-viewing visual search while highlighting distinct differences between the open-loop version of this response and its real-world analogue. Objective: Pediatric athletes with concussion present with a variety of impairments on clinical assessment and require individualized treatment. The Buffalo Concussion Physical Examination is a brief, pertinent clinical assessment for individuals with concussion. The purpose of this study was to identify physical examination subtypes in pediatric athletes with concussion within 2 weeks of injury that are relevant to diagnosis and treatment., Design: Secondary analysis of a published cohort study and clinician consensus., Setting: Three university-affiliated sports medicine centers., Participants: Two hundred seventy children (14.9 ± 1.9 years)., Independent Variables: Orthostatic intolerance, horizontal and vertical saccades, smooth pursuits, vestibulo-ocular reflex, near-point convergence, complex tandem gait, neck range of motion, neck tenderness, and neck spasm., Main Outcome Measures: Correlations between independent variables were calculated, and network graphs were made. k -means and hierarchical clustering were used to identify clusters of impairments. Optimal number of clusters was assessed. Results were reviewed by experienced clinicians and consensus was reached on proposed subtypes., Results: Physical examination clusters overlapped with each other, and no optimal number of clusters was identified. When two peripheral objects are presented in close proximity, saccades towards one of these objects land at a weighted average location between the two objects. This phenomenon, known as the 'global effect' or 'saccade averaging', disappears when the distance between the objects increases. When objects are further apart, outside the averaging zone, saccades land on one of the objects with little or no saccade averaging. Although it is known that the strength of the global effect is dependent on the specific features of the two objects, it is unclear if the size of the zone in which averaging can occur (i.e., the averaging zone) is adaptive. The aim of the current study was to investigate whether the size of the averaging zone adapts to variations in object luminance contrast of the objects. In order to systematically assess changes in the averaging zone, in two experiments, observers made saccadic eye movements while the luminance of the target and the distractor varied. We report three major findings: 1) When a distractor was more luminant relative to the target, the averaging zone increased (Exp. 1). Notably, saccade averaging never entirely ceased to exist, even for remote distractors. 2) When target and distractor were equiluminant, the averaging zone did not change with absolute luminance (Exp. 2). 3) Higher (relative and absolute) luminance increased the averaging zone especially for shorter saccadic response times (SRT). Visual processing differs between the foveal and peripheral visual field. These differences can lead to different appearances of objects in the periphery and the fovea, posing a challenge to perception across saccades. Differences in the appearance of visual features between the peripheral and foveal visual field may bias change discrimination across saccades. Previously it has been reported that spatial frequency (SF) appears higher in the periphery compared to the fovea (Davis et al., 1987). In this study, we investigated the visual appearance of SF before and after a saccade and the discrimination of SF changes during saccades. In addition, we tested the contributions of pre- and postsaccadic information to change discrimination performance. In the first experiment, we found no differences in the appearance of SF before and after a saccade. However, participants showed a clear bias to report SF increases. Interestingly, a 200-ms postsaccadic blank improved the precision of the responses but did not affect the bias. In the second experiment, participants showed lower thresholds for SF increases than for decreases, suggesting that the bias in the first experiment was not just a response bias. Finally, we asked participants to discriminate the SF of stimuli presented before a saccade. Thresholds in the presaccadic discrimination task were lower than in the change discrimination task, suggesting that transsaccadic change discrimination is not merely limited by presaccadic discrimination in the periphery.
