Abstract Magnetoelectric phenomena are intimately linked to relativistic effects and also require the material to break spatial inversion symmetry and time-reversal invariance. Magnetoelectric coupling can substantially affect light–matter interaction and lead to non-reciprocal light propagation. Here, we confirm on a fully experimental basis, without invoking either symmetry-based or material-specific assumptions, that the optical magnetoelectric effect in materials with non-parallel magnetization (M) and electric polarization (P) generates a trilinear term in the refractive index, δ n ∝ k ⋅ (P × M), where k is the propagation vector of light. Its sharp magnetoelectric resonances in the terahertz regime, which are simultaneously electric and magnetic dipole active excitations, make Co2Mo3O8 an ideal compound to demonstrate this fundamental relation via independent variation of M, P, and k. Remarkably, the material shows almost perfect one-way transparency in moderate magnetic fields for one of these magnetoelectric resonances.

Abstract The skyrmion lattice state (SkL), a crystal built of mesoscopic spin vortices, gains its stability via thermal fluctuations in all bulk skyrmion host materials known to date. Therefore, its existence is limited to a narrow temperature region below the paramagnetic state. This stability range can drastically increase in systems with restricted geometries, such as thin films, interfaces and nanowires. Thermal quenching can also promote the SkL as a metastable state over extended temperature ranges. Here, we demonstrate more generally that a proper choice of material parameters alone guarantees the thermodynamic stability of the SkL over the full temperature range below the paramagnetic state down to zero kelvin. We found that GaV4Se8, a polar magnet with easy-plane anisotropy, hosts a robust Néel-type SkL even in its ground state. Our supporting theory confirms that polar magnets with weak uniaxial anisotropy are ideal candidates to realize SkLs with wide stability ranges.

Recent neutron scattering experiments suggested that frustrated magnetic interactions give rise to antiferromagnetic spiral and fractional skyrmion lattice phases in MnSc[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] . Here, to trace the signatures of these modulated phases, we studied the spin excitations of MnSc[Formula: see text]S[Formula: see text] by THz spectroscopy at 300 mK and in magnetic fields up to 12 T and by broadband microwave spectroscopy at various temperatures up to 50 GHz. We found a single magnetic resonance with frequency linearly increasing in field. The small deviation of the Mn[Formula: see text] ion g-factor from 2, g = 1.96, and the absence of other resonances imply very weak anisotropies and negligible contribution of higher harmonics to the spiral state. The significant difference between the dc magnetic susceptibility and the lowest-frequency ac susceptibility in our experiment implies the existence of mode(s) outside of the measured frequency windows. Orbital degrees of freedom mediating an interaction between spin and lattice were predicted to raise strong magnetoelectric effect, i.e., to realize an efficient coupling between magnetic and ferroelectric orders. However, the effect of orbital fluctuations has been considered only in a few magnetoelectric materials, as orbital-degeneracy driven Jahn-Teller effect rarely couples to polarization. Here, we explore the spin-lattice coupling in multiferroic Swedenborgites with mixed valence and Jahn-Teller active transition metal ions on a stacked triangular and Kagome lattice using infrared and dielectric spectroscopy. On one hand, in CaBaM_{4}O_{7} (M=Co, Fe), we observe a strong magnetic-order-induced shift in the phonon frequencies and a corresponding large change in the dielectric response. Remarkably, as an unusual manifestation of the spin-phonon coupling, the spin fluctuations reduce the phonon lifetime by one order of magnitude at the magnetic phase transitions. On the other hand, lattice vibrations, dielectric response, and electric polarization show no variation at the Néel temperature of CaBaFe_{2}Co_{2}O_{7}, which is built up by orbital singlet ions. Our results provide a showcase for orbital degrees of freedom enhanced magnetoelectric coupling via the example of Swedenborgites.

Nonreciprocal directional dichroism, also called the optical-diode effect, is an appealing functional property inherent to the large class of noncentrosymmetric magnets. However, the in situ electric control of this phenomenon is challenging as it requires a set of conditions to be fulfilled: Special symmetries of the magnetic ground state, spin excitations with comparable magnetic- and electric-dipole activity, and switchable electric polarization. We demonstrate the isothermal electric switch between domains of Ba_{2}CoGe_{2}O_{7} possessing opposite magnetoelectric susceptibilities. Combining THz spectroscopy and multiboson spin-wave analysis, we show that unbalancing the population of antiferromagnetic domains generates the nonreciprocal light absorption of spin excitations.

GaV_{4}S_{8} is a multiferroic semiconductor hosting magnetic cycloid (Cyc) and Néel-type skyrmion lattice (SkL) phases with a broad region of thermal and magnetic stability. Here, we use time-resolved magneto-optical Kerr spectroscopy to show the coherent generation of collective spin excitations in the Cyc and SkL phases. Our micromagnetic simulations reveal that these are driven by an optically induced modulation of uniaxial anisotropy. Our results shed light on spin dynamics in anisotropic materials hosting skyrmions and pave a new pathway for the optical manipulation of their magnetic order.

We have investigated the directional dichroism of magnetic resonance spectra in the polar ferromagnet GaV_{4}S_{8}. While four types of structural domains are energetically degenerated under a zero field, the magnetic resonance for each domain is well separated by applying magnetic fields due to uniaxial magnetic anisotropy. Consequently, a directional dichroism as large as 20% is clearly observed without domain cancellation. The present observation therefore demonstrates that not only magnetoelectric monodomain crystals but also magnetoelectric multidomain specimens can be used to realize microwave (optical) diodes owing to the lack of inversion domains.

The ultimate goal of multiferroic research is the development of a new-generation nonvolatile memory devices, where magnetic bits are controlled via electric fields with low energy consumption. Here, we demonstrate the optical identification of magnetoelectric (ME) antiferromagnetic (AFM) domains in the LiCoPO_{4} exploiting the strong absorption difference between the domains. This unusual contrast, also present in zero magnetic field, is attributed to the dynamic ME effect of the spin-wave excitations, as confirmed by our microscopic model, which also captures the characteristics of the observed static ME effect. The control and the optical readout of AFM/ME domains, demonstrated here, will likely promote the development of ME and spintronic devices based on AFM insulators.

The magnetic field induced rearrangement of the cycloidal spin structure in ferroelectric monodomain single crystals of the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO_{3} is studied using small-angle neutron scattering. The cycloid propagation vectors are observed to rotate when magnetic fields applied perpendicular to the rhombohedral (polar) axis exceed a pinning threshold value of ∼5  T. In light of these experimental results, a phenomenological model is proposed that captures the rearrangement of the cycloidal domains, and we revisit the microscopic origin of the magnetoelectric effect. A new coupling between the magnetic anisotropy and the polarization is proposed that explains the recently discovered magnetoelectric polarization perpendicular to the rhombohedral axis.

Low-frequency modes of L-Asp and L-Asn were studied in the range from 0.1 to 3.0THz using time-domain Terahertz spectroscopy and density functional theory calculation. The results show that PBE-D2 shows more success than BLYP-D2 in prediction of THz absorption spectra. To compare their low-frequency modes, we adopted "vibrational character ID strips" proposed by Schmuttenmaer and coworkers [Journal of Physical Chemistry B, 117, 10444(2013)]. We found that the most intense THz absorption peaks of two compounds both involve severe distortion of their hydrogen bonding networks. Due to less rigid hydrogen bonding network in L-Asp, the side chain (carboxyl group) of L-Asp exhibits larger motions than that (carboxamide group) of L-Asn in low-frequency modes., (Copyright © 2017 Elsevier B.V. GaV 4 S 8 is a multiferroic semiconductor hosting Néel-type magnetic skyrmions dressed with electric polarization. At T s  = 42 K, the compound undergoes a structural phase transition of weakly first-order, from a non-centrosymmetric cubic phase at high temperatures to a polar rhombohedral structure at low temperatures. Below T s , ferroelectric domains are formed with the electric polarization pointing along any of the four 〈111〉 axes. Although in this material the size and the shape of the ferroelectric-ferroelastic domains may act as important limiting factors in the formation of the Néel-type skyrmion lattice emerging below T C  = 13 K, the characteristics of polar domains in GaV 4 S 8 have not been studied yet. Here, we report on the inspection of the local-scale ferroelectric domain distribution in rhombohedral GaV 4 S 8 using low-temperature piezoresponse force microscopy. We observed mechanically and electrically compatible lamellar domain patterns, where the lamellae are aligned parallel to the (100)-type planes with a typical spacing between 100 nm-1.2 μm. Since the magnetic pattern, imaged by atomic force microscopy using a magnetically coated tip, abruptly changes at the domain boundaries, we expect that the control of ferroelectric domain size in polar skyrmion hosts can be exploited for the spatial confinement and manipulation of Néel-type skyrmions.

Skyrmions are whirl-like topological spin objects with high potential for future magnetic data storage. A fundamental question that is relevant to both basic research and application is whether ferroelectric (FE) polarization can be associated with skyrmions' magnetic texture and whether these objects can be manipulated by electric fields. We study the interplay between magnetism and electric polarization in the lacunar spinel GaV4S8, which undergoes a structural transition associated with orbital ordering at 44 K and reveals a complex magnetic phase diagram below 13 K, including ferromagnetic, cycloidal, and Néel-type skyrmion lattice (SkL) phases. We found that the orbitally ordered phase of GaV4S8 is FE with a sizable polarization of ~1 μC/cm(2). Moreover, we observed spin-driven excess polarizations in all magnetic phases; hence, GaV4S8 hosts three different multiferroic phases with coexisting polar and magnetic order. These include the SkL phase, where we predict a strong spatial modulation of FE polarization close to the skyrmion cores. By taking into account the crystal symmetry and spin patterns of the magnetically ordered phases, we identify exchange striction as the main microscopic mechanism behind the spin-driven FE polarization in each multiferroic phase. Because GaV4S8 is unique among known SkL host materials owing to its polar crystal structure and the observed strong magnetoelectric effect, this study is an important step toward the nondissipative electric field control of skyrmions.

Following the early prediction of the skyrmion lattice (SkL)--a periodic array of spin vortices--it has been observed recently in various magnetic crystals mostly with chiral structure. Although non-chiral but polar crystals with Cnv symmetry were identified as ideal SkL hosts in pioneering theoretical studies, this archetype of SkL has remained experimentally unexplored. Here, we report the discovery of a SkL in the polar magnetic semiconductor GaV4S8 with rhombohedral (C3v) symmetry and easy axis anisotropy. The SkL exists over an unusually broad temperature range compared with other bulk crystals and the orientation of the vortices is not controlled by the external magnetic field, but instead confined to the magnetic easy axis. Supporting theory attributes these unique features to a new Néel-type of SkL describable as a superposition of spin cycloids in contrast to the Bloch-type SkL in chiral magnets described in terms of spin helices.

Multiferroics permit the magnetic control of the electric polarization and the electric control of the magnetization. These static magnetoelectric (ME) effects are of enormous interest: The ability to read and write a magnetic state current-free by an electric voltage would provide a huge technological advantage. Dynamic or optical ME effects are equally interesting, because they give rise to unidirectional light propagation as recently observed in low-temperature multiferroics. This phenomenon, if realized at room temperature, would allow the development of optical diodes which transmit unpolarized light in one, but not in the opposite, direction. Here, we report strong unidirectional transmission in the room-temperature multiferroic BiFeO_{3} over the gigahertz-terahertz frequency range. The supporting theory attributes the observed unidirectional transmission to the spin-current-driven dynamic ME effect. These findings are an important step toward the realization of optical diodes, supplemented by the ability to switch the transmission direction with a magnetic or electric field.

The coupling between spins and electric dipoles governs magnetoelectric phenomena in multiferroics. The dynamical magnetoelectric effect, which is an inherent attribute of the spin excitations in multiferroics, drastically changes the optical properties of these compounds compared with conventional materials where light-matter interaction is expressed only by the dielectric permittivity or magnetic permeability. Here we show via polarized terahertz spectroscopy studies on multiferroic Ca2CoSi2O7, Sr2CoSi2O7 and Ba2CoGe2O7 that such magnetoeletric spin excitations exhibit quadrochroism, that is, they have different colours for all the four combinations of the two propagation directions (forward or backward) and the two orthogonal polarizations of a light beam. We demonstrate that one-way transparency can be realized for spin-wave excitations with sufficiently strong optical magnetoelectric effect. Furthermore, the transparent and absorbing directions of light propagation can be reversed by external magnetic fields. This magnetically controlled optical-diode function of magnetoelectric multiferroics may open a new horizon in photonics.

Optical excitations of BiTeI with large Rashba spin splitting have been studied in an external magnetic field (B) applied parallel to the polar axis. A sequence of transitions between the Landau levels (LLs), whose energies are in proportion to √B were observed, being characteristic of massless Dirac electrons. The large separation energy between the LLs makes it possible to detect the strongest cyclotron resonance even at room temperature in moderate fields. Unlike in 2D Dirac systems, the magnetic field induced rearrangement of the conductivity spectrum is directly observed.

Dynamic conservation of forest genetic resources (FGR) means maintaining the genetic diversity of trees within an evolutionary process and allowing generation turnover in the forest. We assessed the network of forests areas managed for the dynamic conservation of FGR (conservation units) across Europe (33 countries). On the basis of information available in the European Information System on FGR (EUFGIS Portal), species distribution maps, and environmental stratification of the continent, we developed ecogeographic indicators, a marginality index, and demographic indicators to assess and monitor forest conservation efforts. The pan-European network has 1967 conservation units, 2737 populations of target trees, and 86 species of target trees. We detected a poor coincidence between FGR conservation and other biodiversity conservation objectives within this network. We identified 2 complementary strategies: a species-oriented strategy in which national conservation networks are specifically designed for key target species and a site-oriented strategy in which multiple-target units include so-called secondary species conserved within a few sites. The network is highly unbalanced in terms of species representation, and 7 key target species are conserved in 60% of the conservation units. We performed specific gap analyses for 11 tree species, including assessment of ecogeographic, demographic, and genetic criteria. For each species, we identified gaps, particularly in the marginal parts of their distribution range, and found multiple redundant conservation units in other areas. The Mediterranean forests and to a lesser extent the boreal forests are underrepresented. Monitoring the conservation efficiency of each unit remains challenging; however, <2% of the conserved populations seem to be at risk of extinction. The need to develop new methods for the high-sensitivity diagnosis of malaria has initiated a global activity in medical and interdisciplinary sciences. Most of the diverse variety of emerging techniques are based on research-grade instruments, sophisticated reagent-based assays or rely on expertise. Here, we suggest an alternative optical methodology with an easy-to-use and cost-effective instrumentation based on unique properties of malaria pigment reported previously and determined quantitatively in the present study. Malaria pigment, also called hemozoin, is an insoluble microcrystalline form of heme. These crystallites show remarkable magnetic and optical anisotropy distinctly from any other components of blood. As a consequence, they can simultaneously act as magnetically driven micro-rotors and spinning polarizers in suspensions. These properties can gain importance not only in malaria diagnosis and therapies, where hemozoin is considered as drug target or immune modulator, but also in the magnetic manipulation of cells and tissues on the microscopic scale.

We studied spin excitations in the magnetically ordered phase of the noncentrosymmetric Ba(2)CoGe(2)O(7) in high magnetic fields up to 33 T. In the electron spin resonance and far infrared absorption spectra we found several spin excitations beyond the two conventional magnon modes expected for such a two-sublattice antiferromagnet. We show that a multiboson spin-wave theory describes these unconventional modes, including spin-stretching modes, characterized by an oscillating magnetic dipole and quadrupole moment. The lack of inversion symmetry allows each mode to become electric dipole active. We expect that the spin-stretching modes can be generally observed in inelastic neutron scattering and light absorption experiments in a broad class of ordered S > 1/2 spin systems with strong single-ion anisotropy and/or noncentrosymmetric lattice structure.

The subtle interplay of randomness and quantum fluctuations at low temperatures gives rise to a plethora of unconventional phenomena in systems ranging from quantum magnets and correlated electron materials to ultracold atomic gases. Particularly strong disorder effects have been predicted to occur at zero-temperature quantum phase transitions. Here, we demonstrate that the composition-driven ferromagnetic-to-paramagnetic quantum phase transition in Sr(1-x)Ca(x)RuO3 is completely destroyed by the disorder introduced via the different ionic radii of the randomly distributed Sr and Ca ions. Using a magneto-optical technique, we map the magnetic phase diagram in the composition-temperature space. We find that the ferromagnetic phase is significantly extended by the disorder and develops a pronounced tail over a broad range of the composition x. These findings are explained by a microscopic model of smeared quantum phase transitions in itinerant magnets. Moreover, our theoretical study implies that correlated disorder is even more powerful in promoting ferromagnetism than random disorder.

We propose that concurrently magnetic and ferroelectric, i.e., multiferroic, compounds endowed with electrically active magnetic excitations (electromagnons) provide a key to producing large directional dichroism for long wavelengths of light. By exploiting the control of ferroelectric polarization and magnetization in a multiferroic oxide Ba(2)CoGe(2)O(7), we demonstrate the realization of such a directional light-switch function at terahertz frequencies in resonance with the electromagnon absorption. Our results imply that this hidden potential is present in a broad variety of multiferroics.

We have investigated the infrared optical Hall conductivity, sigma(xy)(omega) for band-filling-controlled ferromagnetic crystals of Nd2Mo2O7, revealing the dynamical properties of their anomalous Hall effect (AHE). A resonant structure and its systematic filling dependence were observed in the Hall conductivity spectra in the midinfrared region (typically at 0.1 eV), while similar effects were not discerned in the diagonal (longitudinal or ordinary) conductivity spectra. This property of sigma(xy)(omega) provides crucial and essential information to understand the microscopic mechanism of AHE including its dc limit. Specifically, the interband transition at the magnetic-monopole-like band-anticrossing point, which is split by spin chirality, is the dominant source in AHE.

We demonstrate that the onset of complex spin orders in ACr2O4 spinels with magnetic and Jahn-Teller active A=Fe and Cu ions lowers the lattice symmetry. This is clearly indicated by the emergence of anisotropic lattice dynamics-i.e., by the pronounced phonon splittings-even when experiments probing static distortions fail. The crystal symmetry in the magnetic phase is reduced from tetragonal to orthorhombic for both compounds. The conical spin ordering in FeCr2O4 is also manifested in the hardening of the phonon frequencies. In contrast, the multiferroic CoCr2O4 with no orbital degrees of freedom shows tiny deviations from cubic structure even in its ground state.

High magnetic field study of Hall resistivity in the ferromagnetic phase of (In,Mn)Sb allows one to separate its normal and anomalous components. We show that the anomalous Hall term is not proportional to the magnetization, and that it even changes sign as a function of magnetic field. We also show that the application of pressure modifies the scattering process, but does not influence the Hall effect. These observations suggest that the anomalous Hall effect in (In,Mn)Sb is an intrinsic property and supports the application of the Berry phase theory for (III,Mn)V semiconductors. We propose a phenomenological description of the anomalous Hall conductivity, based on a field-dependent relative shift of the heavy- and light-hole valence bands and the split-off band.

The collapse mechanism of microparticulate Langmuir films was studied experimentally in the present work. Using a Wilhelmy film balance, surface pressure vs area isotherms were determined, and the particle removal during the compression was examined by video-microscope and by naked eye. Upon compressing partially wettable 75 microm diameter surface modified glass beads at liquid (water or aqueous surfactant solution)-air (or n-octane) interfaces, different collapse mechanisms were visualized depending on the wettability of the particles. At low contact angles (below 40 degrees ) irreversible particle removal was observed as a consequence of a particulate line-by-line collapse mechanism. At higher contact angles a buckling-type collapse mechanism was revealed without particle removal from the liquid interface. In the case of irreversible particle removal we assessed the contact angles from the nondissipative part of the isotherm. These values were found to be in reasonable agreement with those determined directly on the beads.

Populus nigra L. is a pioneer tree species of riparian ecosystems that is threatened with extinction because of the loss of its natural habitat. To evaluate the existing genetic diversity of P. nigra within ex-situ collections, we analyzed 675 P. nigra L. accessions from nine European gene banks with three amplified fragment length polymorphism (AFLP) and five microsatellite [or simple sequence repeat (SSR)] primer combinations, and 11 isozyme systems. With isozyme analysis, hybrids could be detected, and only 3% were found in the gene bank collection. AFLP and SSR analyses revealed effectively that 26% of the accessions were duplicated and that the level of clonal duplication varied from 0% in the French gene bank collection up to 78% in the Belgian gene bank collection. SSR analysis was preferred because AFLP was technically more demanding and more prone to scoring errors. To assess the genetic diversity, we grouped material from the gene banks according to topography of the location from which the accessions were originally collected (river system or regions separated by mountains). Genetic diversity was expressed in terms of the following parameters: percentage of polymorphic loci, observed and effective number of alleles, and Nei's expected heterozygosity or gene diversity (for AFLP). Genetic diversity varied from region to region and depended, to some extent, on the marker system used. The most unique alleles were identified in the Danube region (Austria), the Rhône region (France), Italy, the Rijn region (The Netherlands), and the Ebro region (Spain). In general, the diversity was largest in the material collected from the regions in Southern Europe. Dendrograms and principal component analysis resulted in a clustering according to topography. Material from the same river systems, but from different countries, clustered together. The genetic differentiation among the regions (F(st)/G(st)) was moderate.
