Major migration events in Holocene Eurasia have been characterized genetically at broad regional scales1-4. However, insights into the population dynamics in the contact zones are hampered by a lack of ancient genomic data sampled at high spatiotemporal resolution5-7. Here, to address this, we analysed shotgun-sequenced genomes from 100 skeletons spanning 7,300 years of the Mesolithic period, Neolithic period and Early Bronze Age in Denmark and integrated these with proxies for diet (13C and 15N content), mobility (87Sr/86Sr ratio) and vegetation cover (pollen). We observe that Danish Mesolithic individuals of the Maglemose, Kongemose and Ertebølle cultures form a distinct genetic cluster related to other Western European hunter-gatherers. Despite shifts in material culture they displayed genetic homogeneity from around 10,500 to 5,900 calibrated years before present, when Neolithic farmers with Anatolian-derived ancestry arrived. Although the Neolithic transition was delayed by more than a millennium relative to Central Europe, it was very abrupt and resulted in a population turnover with limited genetic contribution from local hunter-gatherers. The succeeding Neolithic population, associated with the Funnel Beaker culture, persisted for only about 1,000 years before immigrants with eastern Steppe-derived ancestry arrived. This second and equally rapid population replacement gave rise to the Single Grave culture with an ancestry profile more similar to present-day Danes. In our multiproxy dataset, these major demographic events are manifested as parallel shifts in genotype, phenotype, diet and land use.

Western Eurasia witnessed several large-scale human migrations during the Holocene1-5. Here, to investigate the cross-continental effects of these migrations, we shotgun-sequenced 317 genomes-mainly from the Mesolithic and Neolithic periods-from across northern and western Eurasia. These were imputed alongside published data to obtain diploid genotypes from more than 1,600 ancient humans. Our analyses revealed a 'great divide' genomic boundary extending from the Black Sea to the Baltic. Mesolithic hunter-gatherers were highly genetically differentiated east and west of this zone, and the effect of the neolithization was equally disparate. Large-scale ancestry shifts occurred in the west as farming was introduced, including near-total replacement of hunter-gatherers in many areas, whereas no substantial ancestry shifts happened east of the zone during the same period. Similarly, relatedness decreased in the west from the Neolithic transition onwards, whereas, east of the Urals, relatedness remained high until around 4,000 BP, consistent with the persistence of localized groups of hunter-gatherers. The boundary dissolved when Yamnaya-related ancestry spread across western Eurasia around 5,000 BP, resulting in a second major turnover that reached most parts of Europe within a 1,000-year span. The genetic origin and fate of the Yamnaya have remained elusive, but we show that hunter-gatherers from the Middle Don region contributed ancestry to them. Yamnaya groups later admixed with individuals associated with the Globular Amphora culture before expanding into Europe. Similar turnovers occurred in western Siberia, where we report new genomic data from a 'Neolithic steppe' cline spanning the Siberian forest steppe to Lake Baikal. These prehistoric migrations had profound and lasting effects on the genetic diversity of Eurasian populations.

Plasmonics serves as a most outstanding feature of nanoparticle technology and is nowadays used in numerous applications within imaging, sensing and energy harvesting, like plasmonically enhanced solar cells, nanoparticle bioimaging, plasmon-controlled fluorescence for molecular tracking in living cells, plasmon-controlled electronic molecular devices and surface enhanced Raman spectroscopy for single molecular detection. Although plasmonics has been utilized since ancient times, the understanding of its basic interactions has not been fully achieved even under the emergence of modern nanoscience. In particular, it has been difficult to address the "ultra-fine" 1–10 nm regime, important for applications especially in bioimaging and biomedical areas, where neither classical nor quantum based theoretical methods apply. Recently, new approaches have been put forward to bridge this size gap based on semi-empirical discrete interaction models where each atom makes a difference. A primary aim of this perspective article is to review some of the most salient features of these models, and in particular focus on a recent extension – the extended discrete interaction model (Ex-DIM), where the geometric and environmental features are extended – and highlight a set of benchmark studies using this model concerning size, shape, material, temperature dependence and other characteristics of ultra-fine plasmonic nanoparticles. We also analyze new possibilities offered by the model for designing ultra-fine plasmonic particles for applications in the areas of bioimaging, biosensing, photothermal therapy, infrared light harvesting and photodetection. We foresee that future modelling activities will be closely connected to collaborative experimental work including synthesis, device fabrication and measurements with feedback and validation in a systematic fashion. With this strategy we can expect that modelling of ultra-fine plasmonics particles can be integrated in the development of novel plasmonic systems with unprecedented performance and applicability. The lethally maltreated body of Vittrup Man was deposited in a Danish bog, probably as part of a ritualised sacrifice. It happened between c. 3300 and 3100 cal years BC, i.e., during the period of the local farming-based Funnel Beaker Culture. In terms of skull morphological features, he differs from the majority of the contemporaneous farmers found in Denmark, and associates with hunter-gatherers, who inhabited Scandinavia during the previous millennia. His skeletal remains were selected for transdisciplinary analysis to reveal his life-history in terms of a population historical perspective. We report the combined results of an integrated set of genetic, isotopic, physical anthropological and archaeological analytical approaches. Strontium signature suggests a foreign birthplace that could be in Norway or Sweden. In addition, enamel oxygen isotope values indicate that as a child he lived in a colder climate, i.e., to the north of the regions inhabited by farmers. Genomic data in fact demonstrates that he is closely related to Mesolithic humans known from Norway and Sweden. Moreover, dietary stable isotope analyses on enamel and bone collagen demonstrate a fisher-hunter way of life in his childhood and a diet typical of farmers later on. Such a variable life-history is also reflected by proteomic analysis of hardened organic deposits on his teeth, indicating the consumption of forager food (seal, whale and marine fish) as well as farmer food (sheep/goat). From a dietary isotopic transect of one of his teeth it is shown that his transfer between societies of foragers and farmers took place near to the end of his teenage years. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

X-ray processes involve interactions with high-energy photons. For these short wavelengths, the perturbing field cannot be treated as constant, and there is a need to go beyond the electric-dipole approximation. The exact semi-classical light–matter interaction operator offers several advantages compared to the multipole expansion such as improved stability and ease of implementation. Here, the exact operator is used to model x-ray scattering in metal K pre-edges. This is a relativistic two-photon process where absorption is dominated by electric-dipole forbidden transitions. With the restricted active space state-interaction approach, spectra can be calculated even for the multiconfigurational wavefunctions including second-order perturbation. However, as the operator itself depends on the transition energy, the cost for evaluating integrals for hundreds of thousands unique transitions becomes a bottleneck. Here, this is solved by calculating the integrals in a molecular-orbital basis that only runs over the active space, combined with a grouping scheme where the operator is the same for close-lying transitions. This speeds up the calculations of single-photon processes and is critical for the modeling of two-photon scattering processes. The new scheme is used to model Kα resonant inelastic x-ray scattering of iron–porphyrin complexes with relevance to studies of heme enzymes, for which the total computational time is reduced by several orders of magnitude with an effect on transition intensities of 0.1% or less. In the H2S molecule, the interplay between different core levels can be investigated in great detail in relation to x-ray spectroscopy, which requires a theory for interpretation. Hence, valence and core excitations into the two antibonding molecular orbitals of the H2S molecule have been calculated within a multi-configurational wave function framework. Scanning along the S–H stretching coordinates, we derive potential energy surfaces and transition dipole moments involving the ground state and core and valence excited states. Both valence excitations and the S1s−1 and S2p−1 core excitations show pairs of dissociative and bound electronic states. These pairs of states are nearly degenerate in H2S at the ground state geometry. The close degeneracy together with conical intersections makes H2S an interesting target for x-ray spectroscopy involving ultra-fast dissociation influenced by non-adiabatic transitions and interference. For future investigations with x-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) and resonant inelastic x-ray scattering (RIXS), it is valuable to compare H2S with the water molecule, which exhibits state-selective gating to different vibrational modes [R. C. Couto et al., Nat. Commun. 8, 14165 (2017)] in its well-separated O1s−1 core excited states. The dense manifolds of the S2p−1 core excited states will complicate the analysis of Kα edge RIXS, but dynamical effects could be evaluated through detuning and by comparing with L edge XAS. In L edge RIXS, the dynamical effects will be more pronounced due to the longer lifetime of the S2p−1 core excited states compared to the S1s−1 core excited states. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

We study the influence of media on the interaction of ultra-fine plasmonic nanoparticles (≤ 8 nm) with radiation. The important role of the surface layer of the nanoparticles, with properties that differ from the ones in the inner part, is established. Using an atomistic representation of the nanoparticle material and its interaction with light, we find a highly inhomogeneous distribution of the electric field inside and around the particles. It is predicted that with an increase in the refractive index of the ambient medium, the extension of the surface layer of atoms increases, something that also is accompanied by an enhanced red shift of the plasmon resonance band compared to large particles in which the influence of this layer and its relative volume is reduced. It is shown that the physical origin for the formation of a surface layer of atoms near the nanoparticle boundary is related to the anisotropy of the local environment of atoms in this layer which changes the conditions for the interaction of neighboring atoms with each other and with the incident radiation. It is shown that a growth of the refractive index of the ambient medium results in an increase in the local field in the dielectric cavity in which a plasmonic nanoparticle is embedded and which is accompanied by a growth of the amplitude of the plasmon resonance. We predict that in the ultra-fine regime the refractive index sensitivity shows a decreasing trend with respect to size which is opposite to that for larger particles. Summary: Neolithic flint mines across northern Europe during the transition between the fifth and fourth millennia BC show similarities in their dating, extraction methods and morphology, as do contemporary forms of monumentality such as causewayed enclosures, earthen long barrows and megalithic tombs during this period. Recent research has identified further similarities in the expressions of art motifs within the mines. While certainly found during different excavations, most of these motifs incised in chalk have not been reported on. Following archival analysis, this paper details these similarities in motifs that extend between sites in the UK, Denmark, Belgium and potentially Poland, and perhaps increasingly over time to other, non‐mining, sites. We argue that the practice of flint mining and incising of art motifs may indicate shared specific cultural beliefs at the beginning of the Neolithic in northern Europe that have not been previously recognized. In this article we present the fragments of a crucible and a possible tuyère that provide evidence of early copper metallurgy in Scandinavia at least 1500 years earlier than previously thought. The technical ceramics were found in a cultural layer containing Early Neolithic Funnel Beaker pottery dating to around 3800–3500 BC beneath a long barrow dating to 3300–3100 BC. The presence of a copper alloy in the crucible is confirmed by three independent X-ray fluorescence analyses using both a hand-held and a stationary instrument, SEM-EDS analysis of a cross-section, as well as a Bruker Tornado μ-X-Rayfluorescence scanner (μ-XRF). The transmission of metallurgy to southern Scandinavia coincided with the introduction of long barrows, causewayed enclosures, two-aisled houses, and certain types of artefacts. Thus, metallurgy seems to be part of the new networks that enabled the establishment of a fully Neolithic society. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The Gjerrild burial provides the largest and best-preserved assemblage of human skeletal material presently known from the Single Grave Culture (SGC) in Denmark. For generations it has been debated among archaeologists if the appearance of this archaeological complex represents a continuation of the previous Neolithic communities, or was facilitated by incoming migrants. We sampled and analysed five skeletons from the Gjerrild cist, buried over a period of c. 300 years, 2600/2500–2200 cal BCE. Despite poor DNA preservation, we managed to sequence the genome (>1X) of one individual and the partial genomes (0.007X and 0.02X) of another two individuals. Our genetic data document a female (Gjerrild 1) and two males (Gjerrild 5 + 8), harbouring typical Neolithic K2a and HV0 mtDNA haplogroups, but also a rare basal variant of the R1b1 Y-chromosomal haplogroup. Genome-wide analyses demonstrate that these people had a significant Yamnaya-derived (i.e. steppe) ancestry component and a close genetic resemblance to the Corded Ware (and related) groups that were present in large parts of Northern and Central Europe at the time. Assuming that the Gjerrild skeletons are genetically representative of the population of the SGC in broader terms, the transition from the local Neolithic Funnel Beaker Culture (TRB) to SGC is not characterized by demographic continuity. Rather, the emergence of SGC in Denmark was part of the Late Neolithic and Early Bronze Age population expansion that swept across the European continent in the 3rd millennium BCE, resulting in various degrees of genetic replacement and admixture processes with previous Neolithic populations. Using the extended discrete interaction model we investigate the tunabilty of surface plasmon resonances in alloys and core–shell nanoparticles made from silver and gold in the small (1–15 nm) nanoscale regime where classical models based on the bulk dielectric constant may not apply. We show that the surface plasmon resonance of these alloys and core–shell particles to a large extent follow Vegard's law irrespective of the geometry of the nanoparticle. The evolution of the polarizability with size demonstrates a highly non-linear behaviour of the polarizability with the ratio of the constituents and geometry in alloys and core–shell nanoparticles, with the exception of the longitudinal surface plasmon resonance in nanorods and, partly, nanodisc alloys. We here show that the non-linear behaviour can be explained in terms of the difference in polarizability of the mixing constituents and local effects causing a quenching of the dipoles for geometries with a low aspect ratio. A thorough statistical investigation reveals that there is only a small dependence of the surface plasmon resonance on atomic arrangement and exact distribution in a nanoparticle and that the standard deviation decreases rapidly with the size of the nanoparticles. The physical ground for the random distribution algorithm for alloys in discrete interaction models is explained in detail and verified by a statistical analysis. Using the extended discrete interaction model and Mie theory, we investigate the tunability of the optical polarizability of small metallic nano-shells. We show that the spectral positions of symmetric and antisymmetric dipolar plasmon resonances vary with the ratio of particle radius to hole radius in a manner similar to one predicted for uniform metallic nano-shells using a semiclassical approach of two coupled harmonic oscillators. We show that, according to the extended discrete interaction model, the dipolar plasmon resonances are also present for nano-shells in the 2–13 nm size region and show the same functional dependence seen for larger nano-shells. Using previously fitted data from experiment, we can predict the size-dependence of the plasma frequency for nano-shells in the 1–15 nm size region. We find that Mie theory, which utilizes the electron mean free path correction for the permittivity, is not able to reproduce the same functional form of the dipolar modes for the nano-shells of the same sizes. Inappropriate speeding is one of the main causes for traffic-related injuries and fatalities. Studies have shown that more than 50% of Danish car drivers regularly speed on urban roads and nearly 75% of them speed on rural roads. Physical speedcalming measures, particularly speed humps, are widely used to reduce speeding in urban areas in the Danish road network. However, speed humps are often located based on reasons other than ensuring that they have the best effect on reducing the speed of vehicles. Furthermore, their speed-calming effect is not utilised sufficiently. This study evaluated more than 570 speed humps on roads with a 50 km/h speed limit. The main results reveal that speed increases with an interval between speed humps of up to 200 m at approximately 60 km/h. Additionally, a positive correlation was found between the distance from the roadside to the roadside buildings. The actual interval between speed humps ensures that suitable driving behaviour is carried out is 52 m, 70 m and 164 m for through roads, main roads and residential roads, respectively, in cases in which roadside buildings are situated farther from the road. Similar values were found for the intervals between speed bumps on these three types of roads (67 m, 89 m and 261 m, respectively) when there is a shorter distance between the roadside and the roadside buildings. Overall, speed humps are an efficient way to reduce speeding in built-up areas; however, aside from the interval between the speed humps, the distance from the roadside to the roadside building is the only significant factor contributing to the speed of the car for drivers on these roads. Electronically excited states play important roles in many chemical reactions and spectroscopic techniques. In quantum chemistry, a common technique to solve excited states is the multiroot Davidson algorithm, but it is not designed for processes like X‐ray spectroscopy that involves hundreds of highly excited states. We show how the use of a restricted active space wavefunction together with a projection operator to remove low‐lying electronic states offers an efficient way to reach single and double‐core‐hole states. Additionally, several improvements to the stability and efficiency of the configuration interaction (CI) algorithm for a large number of states are suggested. When applied to a series of transition metal complexes the new CI algorithm does not only resolve divergence issues but also leads to typical reduction in computational time by 70%, with the largest savings for small molecules and large active spaces. Together, the projection operator and the improved CI algorithm now make it possible to simulate a wide range of single‐ and two‐photon spectroscopies. © 2019 Wiley Periodicals, Inc. Fluid dynamics is used for fouling mitigation in membrane bioreactors (MBRs), whereby a proper understanding of the fluid dynamics is of great interest. The influence of fluid dynamics has led to the use of computational fluid dynamics for optimizing MBR systems. In this work, a model has been validated for flat sheet membranes, with use of the Eulerian multiphase method. The model is validated against a comparable setup where the liquid velocities are measured with a laser Doppler anemometer (LDA). Furthermore, the Eulerian multiphase approach is validated against the more numerical direct volume of fluid (VOF) approach with sludge properties for the liquid, resulting in an error between the models of less than 2% for the wall shear stresses. The VOF model further showed that the horizontal components contribute significantly to the total wall shear stresses. The model has been applied to a full-scale setup for studying the effect of deflecting membranes as deflections have been seen in production. Minimizing the deflection of the membrane sheets was crucial to achieve a good operating condition as a deflection of 2 mm in a setup with a gap of 7 mm decreased the wall shear stresses with as much as 40% on average on the specific membrane surface. Klavs Randsborg has made important contributions to the archaeology of the Bronze Age and later prehistoric periods, but in the 1970s he also touched upon issues such as the formation of rank in Neolithic societies. In his article 'Social Dimensions of Early Neolithic Denmark', he suggested that a hierarchical society arose at the transition from the Early to Middle Neolithic, c. 3300–3200 BC. Since then, excavations and research have resulted in numerous publications about the Neolithic, but only rarely have these examined social development. In this article, the authors continue the debate, sharing the same starting point as Klavs Randsborg, but here approaching the question of emerging social inequality on the background of recent research into the early agricultural societies in Northern Europe, seen in a broader European context. The primary focus is upon burial monuments as manifestations of status and power, and parallels are drawn with similar construction activities amongst present‐day farming communities in such remote areas as the islands of Southeast Asia. The social organisation and ritual customs of these modern farming communities are considered relevant when interpreting the archaeological evidence for early agricultural societies in Northern Europe. X-ray absorption spectroscopy (XAS) in the metal K pre-edge is a standard probe of electronic and geometric structure of transition metal complexes. Simulating the K pre-edge spectra requires contributions beyond the electric dipole, but if that term is non-zero, the second-order terms, e.g. electric quadrupoles, are no longer origin-independent. In the velocity representation, complete origin independence can be achieved by including all terms to the same order in the oscillator strength. Here, we implement that approach in the length representation and use it for restricted active space (RAS) simulations of metal K pre-edges of iron monomers and dimers. Complete origin independence is not achieved and the size of the remaining errors depends on the electric dipole oscillator strength and its ratio in length and velocity representations. The error in the origin independence is in the ANO basis sets two orders of magnitude smaller than the value of the individual contributions. For systems with strong electric dipole contributions, the errors are not significant within 3 Å from a metal centre, far enough to handle many multi-metal systems. Furthermore, we discuss the convergence of the multipole expansion, the possibility to assign spectral contributions, and the origin of negative absorption intensities. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

A string-based coupled-cluster method of general excitation rank, with optimal scaling and easy collection of all possible intermediates, which accounts for special relativity within the four-component framework is presented. The easy identification and collection of intermediates is achieved by extending the excitation-class formalism and introducing a contraction order for the operator indices. Initially, all possible contractions between the Hamiltonian and the intermediates with the cluster operator are found, stored and used for driving the algorithm, thereby defining an algorithm which allows for very complex state-selective, multi-reference, coupled-cluster calculations. The algorithm for solving the coupled-cluster equations can be used in both relativistic as well as non-relativistic calculations by appropriate restrictions in the excitation-class formalism. The capabilities of the new method are demonstrated in the application to the electronic ground state of the SbH molecule. In these calculations simulated multi-reference expansions with double, triple and quadruple excitations into the external space as well as the regular coupled-cluster hierarchy up to full quadruples excitations are compared. The intensities and relative energies of metal K pre-edge features are sensitive to both geometric and electronic structures. With the possibility to collect high-resolution spectral data it is important to find theoretical methods that include all important spectral effects: ligand-field splitting, multiplet structures, 3d–4p orbital hybridization, and charge-transfer excitations. Here the restricted active space (RAS) method is used for the first time to calculate metal K pre-edge spectra of open-shell systems, and its performance is tested against on six iron complexes: [FeCl6]n−, [FeCl4]n−, and [Fe(CN)6]n− in ferrous and ferric oxidation states. The method gives good descriptions of the spectral shapes for all six systems. The mean absolute deviation for the relative energies of different peaks is only 0.1 eV. For the two systems that lack centrosymmetry [FeCl4]2−/1−, the ratios between dipole and quadrupole intensity contributions are reproduced with an error of 10%, which leads to good descriptions of the integrated pre-edge intensities. To gain further chemical insight, the origins of the pre-edge features have been analyzed with a chemically intuitive molecular orbital picture that serves as a bridge between the spectra and the electronic structures. The pre-edges contain information about both ligand-field strengths and orbital covalencies, which can be understood by analyzing the RAS wavefunction. The RAS method can thus be used to predict and rationalize the effects of changes in both the oxidation state and ligand environment in a number of hard X-ray studies of small and medium-sized molecular systems. Membrane bioreactor (MBR) systems are often considered as the wastewater treatment method of the future due to their high effluent quality. One of the main problems with such systems is a relative large energy consumption, compared to conventional activated sludge (CAS) systems, which has led to further research in this specific area. A powerful tool for optimizing MBR-systems is computational fluid dynamics (CFD) modelling, which gives researchers the ability to describe the flow in the systems. A parameter which is often neglected in such models is the non-Newtonian properties of active sludge, which is of great importance for MBR systems since they operate at sludge concentrations up to a factor of 10 compared to CAS systems, resulting in strongly shear thinning liquids. A CFD-model is validated against measurements conducted in a system with rotating cross-flow membranes submerged in non-Newtonian liquids, where tangential velocities are measured with a Laser Doppler Anemometer (LDA). The CFD model is found to be capable of modelling the correct velocities in a range of setups, making CFD models a powerful tool for optimization of MBR systems. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Liquids with non-Newtonian properties are presented in many engineering areas, as for example in membrane bioreactors where active sludge exhibits shear thinning properties. Therefore, the ability to determine the rheology's dependence on shear is important when optimising systems with such liquids. However, rheometers capable of determining the viscosity are often expensive and so a cheaper alternative is constructedwith this exact capability. Using the principle of rotating rheometers, a low-cost rheometer was built to determine the rheology of Newtonian and non-Newtonian liquids. The general principles and background assumptions and the physics are described. The rheometerwas calibrated by comparison with measurements conducted on a Brookfield viscometer for Newtonian liquids. For validation measurements on non-Newtonian liquids, xanthan gum solutions were made and compared with measurements on the Brookfield viscometer and with values from other sources. Background: The global epidemic of type 2 diabetes (T2D) is a challenging health problem. Lifestyle changes, including nutrition therapy, areimportant for the prevention and management of T2D. Seaweeds contain several bioactive substances with potential health properties and may be a low-cost alternative functional food in the prevention of T2D. Objective: The aim of this study was to explore the preventive effects of dried Nordic seaweed species on diabetes in an animal model of T2D. Method: Fiftymale KK-Ay mice were randomly assigned to one of four diets: control diet (chow) or diets supplemented with Alaria esculenta (AE), Saccharina latissima (SL), or Palmaria palmata (PP). The effect of the interventions on the progression of T2D was monitored over 10 weeks and evaluated by circulating glucose, glycated hemoglobin (HbA1c), insulin, glucagon, and lipid levels. Results: The SL group had significantly lower bodyweight, lower HbA1c and insulin levels, as well as higher high density lipoprotein (HDL) cholesterol levels after the 10-week intervention than the control group. At the end of the study, the control group had significantly higher HbA1c (p < 0.001) than all of the seaweed groups. Conclusion: All seaweed groups improved HbA1C compared to control and Saccharinalatissima seaweed had concomitantly beneficial effects on glycemic control and lipid levels in KK-Ay diabetic mice.
