Garnet-type solid electrolytes stand out as promising Li-ion conductors for the next-generation batteries. It has been demonstrated that the inherent properties of garnets can be tailored by introducing various dopants into their crystal structures. Recently, there has been a growing interest in the concept of high entropy stabilization for materials design. In this study, we synthesized high-entropy garnets denoted as Li6La3Zr0.7Ti0.3Ta0.5Sb0.5O12 (LLZTTSO), wherein Ti, Sb, and Ta occupy the Zr site. The formation of the cubic garnet phase in LLZTTSO was confirmed through X-ray diffraction (XRD), and the resulting lattice parameter agreed with predictions made using computational methods. Despite the substantial porosity (relative density 80.6%) attributed to the low sintering temperature, LLZTTSO exhibits a bulk ionic conductivity of 0.099 mS cm−1 at 25°C, and a total ionic conductivity of 0.088 mS cm−1, accompanied by an activation energy of 0.497 eV. Furthermore, LLZTTSO demonstrates a critical current density of 0.275 mA cm−2 at 25°C, showcasing its potential even without any interfacial modification.

The discovery of cyclonic and dipole eddies in the Mozambique Channel (MC) indicates that the understanding of the mesoscale eddy characteristics in the MC is incomplete. The distributions of anticyclonic, cyclonic, and dipole eddies along the MC were elucidated in this study using satellite observations. It was observed that these eddies exhibit a preference for emergence and movement in the western MC. The occurrence frequencies of anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies are four and three times per year, respectively, in the narrowest section of the MC. In contrast, the frequency of mesoscale eddies reaches its peak at nine times per year in the central region of the MC. The occurrence of dipole eddies also reaches its peak twice per year in the middle MC. Dipole eddies are more prevalent in the MC and exhibit larger dimensions and shorter lifespans compared to anticyclonic and cyclonic eddies. Mesoscale eddies, which traverse the narrowest section of the MC and propagate southward, are predominantly generated within the western Comoros Basin due to barotropic instability. The southward branch of the Northeast Madagascar Current (NEMC) plays a crucial role in transporting these eddies to the middle MC. The eastern middle MC is also a generation site for mesoscale eddies in addition to the Comoros Basin, where cyclonic eddies are generated twice per year. These cyclonic eddies are also generated due to barotropic instability.

This study explores multi-component garnet-based materials as solid electrolytes for all-solid-state lithium batteries. Through a combination of computational and experimental approaches, we investigate the thermodynamic and structural properties of lithium lanthanum zirconium oxide garnets doped with various elements. Applying density functional theory, the influence of dopants on the thermodynamic stability of these garnets was studied. Probable atomic configurations and their impact on materials’ properties were investigated with the focus on understanding the influence of these configurations on structural stability, phase preference, and ionic conductivity. In addition to the computational study, series of cubic-phase garnet compounds were synthesized and their electrochemical performance was evaluated experimentally. Our findings reveal that the stability of cubic phase in doped Li-garnets is primarily governed by enthalpy, with configurational entropy playing a secondary role. Moreover, we establish that the increased number of doping elements significantly enhances the cubic phase’s stability. This in-depth understanding of materials’ properties at atomic level establishes the basis for optimizing high-entropy ceramics, contributing significantly to the advancement of solid-state lithium batteries and other applications requiring innovative material solutions.

This study examines the interannual and seasonal variations in the distribution of radioactive materials released from the Fukushima Daiichi Nuclear Power Plant (FDNPP) accident in the surface layer of the Kuroshio Extension (KE). Focusing on the contrasting flow conditions in 2015 (southward) and 2021 (northward) – significant oscillatory phases of the KE’s mean flow axis – the research analyzes the impact of seasonal variations on particle transport pathways. The findings reveal distinct seasonal patterns: summer releases primarily follow the eastward KE movement, while winter releases exhibit a southward trajectory. The study further quantifies the transport timescales, demonstrating that particles can reach the Luzon Strait within 10 months, subsequently diverging northward along the Kuroshio and northwestward along the Kuroshio Branch Current, potentially entering the South China Sea within 13 months. This research contributes valuable insights into the seasonal dynamics governing the dispersion and transport of Fukushima-derived radioisotopes in the surface ocean, highlighting the crucial role of the KE in influencing their trajectories.

Developing cost-effective and reliable solid-state sodium batteries with superior performance is crucial for stationary energy storage. A key component in facilitating their application is a solid-state electrolyte with high conductivity and stability. Herein, we employed aliovalent cation substitution to enhance ionic conductivity while preserving the crystal structure. Optimized substitution of Y3+ with Zr4+ in Na5YSi4O12 introduced Na+ ​ion vacancies, resulting in high bulk and total conductivities of up to 6.5 and 3.3 ​mS ​cm−1, respectively, at room temperature with the composition Na4.92Y0.92Zr0.08Si4O12 (NYZS). NYZS shows exceptional electrochemical stability (up to 10 ​V vs. Na+/Na), favorable interfacial compatibility with Na, and an excellent critical current density of 2.4 ​mA ​cm−2. The enhanced conductivity of Na+ ​ions in NYZS was elucidated using solid-state nuclear magnetic resonance techniques and theoretical simulations, revealing two migration routes facilitated by the synergistic effect of increased Na+ ​ion vacancies and improved chemical environment due to Zr4+ substitution. NYZS extends the list of suitable solid-state electrolytes and enables the facile synthesis of stable, low-cost Na+ ion silicate electrolytes.

Abstract The development of reliable and affordable all‐solid‐state sodium metal batteries (ASS‐SMBs) requires suitable solid‐state electrolytes with cost‐efficient processing and stabilized electrode/electrolyte interfaces. Here, an integrated porous/dense/porous Na5YSi4O12 (NYS) trilayered scaffold is designed and fabricated by tape casting using aqueous slurries. In this template‐based NYS scaffold, the dense layer in the middle serves as a separator and the porous layers on both sides accommodate the active materials with their volume changes during the charge/discharge processes, increasing the contact area and thus enhancing the utilization rate and homogenizing the current distribution. The Na/NYS/Na symmetric cells with the Pb‐coated NYS scaffold exhibit significantly reduced interfacial impedance and superior critical current density of up to 3.0 mA cm−2 against Na metal owing to enhanced wettability. Furthermore, the assembled Na/NYS/S full cells operated without external pressure at room temperature showed a high initial discharge capacity of 970 mAh g−1 and good cycling stability with a capacity of 600 mAh g−1 after 150 cycles (based on the mass of sulfur). This approach paves the way for the realization of economical and practical ASS‐SMBs from the perspective of ceramic manufacturing.

Marine environments wherein long-term microbial oxygen consumption exceeds oxygen replenishment can be associated with oxygen minimum zones (OMZ). The Bay of Bengal OMZ (BOB-OMZ) is one of the most intense OMZs globally. To assess the contribution of bacterial oxygen consumption to oxygen loss in BOB-OMZ, we measured bacterial production (BP), temperature, salinity, and dissolved oxygen (DO) in the whole water column. We then compared the estimated bacterial oxygen demand (BOD) with diapycnal oxygen supply (DOS) at depths of 50–200 m in the southern BOB in January 2020. The average BP was 3.53 ± 3.15 μmol C m−3 h−1 in the upper 200 m of four stations, which was lower than those reported in other tropical waters. The vertical distribution of BP differed between the open ocean and nearshore areas. In the open ocean, temperature and DO were the most important predictors for BP in the whole water column. In the nearshore areas, when DO increased sharply from the suboxic state, extremely high BP occurred at 200 m. The average estimated BOD/DOS could reach up to 153% at depths of 50–200 m, indicating advection and anticyclonic eddies probably are important DO replenishment pathways in the BOB.

Upwelling is a widespread phenomenon in the ocean and plays key roles in the marine environment, marine fishery and air–sea carbon exchange. In coastal regions, the upwelling is usually modulated by tides and complex topography, but the dynamical mechanism is still unclear and yet to be quantified. In this study, a three-dimensional (3D) regional ocean model is used to investigate tide-induced upwelling and its mechanisms quantitatively in the mouth of a semi-closed bay, the Bohai Strait, which is a tide-dominated coastal region. The results show that the upwelling mainly occurs near the tidal front in the north of the Laotieshan Channel and the southern region of the front, with the most active upwelling existing off promontories and small islands. Numerical sensitivity experiments indicate that the upwelling in the study area is mainly caused by tides, accounting for approximately 86% of the total. The 3D balance of the vertical component of the vorticity based on the model results quantifies the dynamic processes of the upwelling and reveals that tides induce the upwelling through tidal mixing and nonlinear effects. In the tidal front zone, the upwelling is mainly caused by baroclinic processes related to tidal mixing. Off promontories and small islands, we first reveal that the upwelling is driven by both the tidal mixing and nonlinear effect related to centrifugal force rather than just one of the two mechanisms, and the latter plays a dominant role in producing the upwelling. The strong nonlinear effect is attributed to the periodic movement of barotropic tidal currents rather than the mean flow.

Turbulent mixing above rough topography is crucial for the vertical motions of deep water and the closure of the meridional overturning circulation. Related to prominent topographic features, turbulent mixing not only exhibits a bottom-intensified vertical structure but also displays substantial lateral variation. How turbulent mixing varies in the upslope direction and its impact on the upwelling of deep water over sloping topography remains poorly understood. In this study, the notable multihump structure of the bottom-intensified turbulent diffusivity in the upslope direction of a seamount in the South China Sea (SCS) is revealed by full-depth fine-resolution microstructure and hydrographic profiles. Numerical experiments indicate that multihump bottom-intensified turbulent mixing around a seamount could lead to multiple cells of locally strengthened circulations consisting of upwelling (downwelling) motions in (above) the bottom boundary layer (BBL) that are induced by bottom convergence (divergence) of the turbulent buoyancy flux. Accompanied by cyclonic (anticyclonic) flow, a three-dimensional spiral circulation manifests around the seamount topography. These findings regarding the turbulent mixing and three-dimensional circulation around a deep seamount provide support for the further interpretation of the abyssal meridional overturning circulation.

Natural gas hydrate is a relatively realistic alternative energy source to conventional fossil fuels with considerable reserves. Natural gas hydrate sediments are widely distributed in marine sediment on continental margins. In this study, a numerical modeling method for sediment containing nodular gas hydrates is developed using the two-dimensional discrete element simulation software. The effects of saturation, confining pressure, and nodule radius on the mechanical properties of heterogeneous nodular gas-hydrate-bearing sediment were analyzed using the stress-strain, fracture development, and partial body strain curves, as well as force chain distribution. The results indicated that the mechanical strength of sediment containing round nodular gas hydrates was proportional to the gas hydrate saturation and simulated confining pressure. When hydrate saturation was low, the failure strength of the gas-hydrate-bearing sediment diminished as the nodule radius increased. The simulations showed that variations in sediment porosity influenced the development and evolution of the shear band, resulting in higher porosity around the shear band. These results were analyzed from the perspectives of saturation and confining pressure to determine the failure and deformation law of simple nodular gas hydrate-bearing sediment and provide theoretical support for the subsequent study of the exploitation method of shallow buried deep gas hydrates. The South China Sea (SCS) is the largest marginal sea in the northwest Pacific Ocean. In this study, deep circulation in the SCS is investigated using results from eddy-resolving, regional simulations using the Hybrid Coordinate Ocean Model (HYCOM) verified by continuous current-meter observations. Analysis of these results provides a detailed spatial structure and temporal variability of the deep circulation in the SCS. The major features of the SCS deep circulation are a basin-scale cyclonic gyre and a concentrated deep western boundary current (DWBC). Transport of the DWBC is ~2 Sv at 16.5° N with a width of ~53 km. Flowing southwestward, the narrow DWBC becomes weaker with a wider range. The model results reveal the existence of 80- to 120-day oscillation in the deep northeastern circulation and the DWBC, which are also the areas with elevated eddy kinetic energy. This intraseasonal oscillation propagates northwestward with a velocity amplitude of ~1.0 to 1.5 cm s-1. The distribution of mixing parameters in the deep SCS plays a role in both spatial structure and volume transport of the deep circulation. Compared with the northern shelf of the SCS with the Luzon Strait, deep circulation in the SCS is more sensitive to the large vertical mixing parameters of the Zhongsha Island Chain area. The DNA sensing pathway triggers innate immune responses against DNA virus infection, and NF-κB signaling plays a critical role in establishing innate immunity. We report here that the herpes simplex virus 1 (HSV-1) ubiquitinspecific protease (UL36USP), which is a deubiquitinase (DUB), antagonizes NF-κB activation, depending on its DUB activity. In this study, ectopically expressed UL36USP blocked promoter activation of beta interferon (IFN-β) and NF-κB induced by cyclic GMP-AMP synthase (cGAS) and stimulator of interferon genes (STING). UL36USP restricted NF-κB activation mediated by overexpression of STING, TANKbinding kinase 1, IκB kinase α (IKKα), and IKKβ, but not p65. UL36USP was also shown to inhibit IFN-stimulatory DNA-induced IFN-β and NF-κB activation under conditions of HSV-1 infection. Furthermore, UL36USP was demonstrated to deubiquitinate IκBα and restrict its degradation and, finally, abrogate NF-κB activation. More importantly, the recombinant HSV-1 lacking UL36USP DUB activity, denoted as C40A mutant HSV-1, failed to cleave polyubiquitin chains on IκBα. For the first time, UL36USP was shown to dampen NF-κB activation in the DNA sensing signal pathway to evade host antiviral innate immunity. IMPORTANCE It has been reported that double-stranded-DNA-mediated NF-κB activation is critical for host antiviral responses. Viruses have established various strategies to evade the innate immune system. The N terminus of the HSV-1 UL36 geneencoded protein contains the DUB domain and is conserved across all herpesviruses. This study demonstrates that UL36USP abrogates NF-κB activation by cleaving polyubiquitin chains from IκBα and therefore restricts proteasome-dependent degradation of IκBα and that DUB activity is indispensable for this process. This study expands our understanding of the mechanisms utilized by HSV-1 to evade the host antiviral innate immune defense induced by NF-κB signaling. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
