The inherent energy dissipation ability of the sloshing liquid is effective in vibration control of the supporting structure. Due to the advancement in the construction techniques in structural and mechanical fields, liquid containers of different geometrical configurations were required to avoid tank interference with rigid structural or mechanical components. The quantity of liquid that participates in the connective mode determines the effectiveness of the tuned liquid damper (TLD). To reduce the impulsive liquid mass and to increase the participation of liquid mass in the convective mode, a chamfered bottom tank with a bottom-mounted internal object is proposed in this study. A 2D finite element model developed employing the potential flow theory is used for the present numerical investigation. The effect of the frequency content of ground motion on the slosh dynamics of the chamfered bottom tank has been investigated under six different earthquake ground motions classified based on frequency contents. Also, the dynamic impulsive and convective components of base shear force and hydrodynamic pressure are quantified successfully. A parametric study has been performed to quantify the influence of the bottom-mounted object on the seismic response by altering the object's height. The developed numerical model in this study can be utilized for tuning and designing structure-coupled chamfered bottom TLDs as well as the irregular liquid containers with internal submerged components. Utilizing the inherent capacity of energy dissipation, liquid tanks are nowadays being employed as tuned liquid dampers (TLDs) for controlling unwanted structural vibration. The effective liquid mass that participates in convective mode controls the tank’s overall dynamic response. The stagnant liquid mass, which does not participate in sloshing at the bottom corners of the conventional rectangular and cylindrical TLDs, increases the total liquid mass and has no role in the vibration control of the supporting structure. The hydrodynamic behavior of the sloped wall tank under resonance conditions is demonstrated under harmonic excitation over a range of frequencies close to the fundamental sloshing frequency of the tank. However, the present study focuses on the effect of the modified geometrical configuration due to the bottom-mounted object on the slosh displacement and hydrodynamic base shear. A 2D finite element model developed employing the potential flow theory is used for the present numerical investigation. Compared to a conventional flat-bottom tank, the sloped wall tank exhibits a considerable increase in hydrodynamic base shear near resonance excitation. The dynamic impulsive and the convective response components of the base shear force have been successfully estimated. The sloped bottom tank generates higher sloshing-induced base shear with less liquid mass compared to rectangular tanks. Due to the improved sloshing characteristics, sloped bottom TLD achieves better performance than its conventional flat-bottom counterpart. These improvements in sloshing characteristics are due to the modified tank configuration, which reduces the impulsive liquid mass and results in higher convective participation of liquid mass during sloshing. To further increase the convective characteristics, a sloped bottom tank with internal object is proposed. A velocity potential-oriented finite element model has been adopted for the numerical analysis where a combination of three-node triangular and four-node quadrilateral finite elements is used to discretize the liquid domain. Seismic characteristics of liquid sloshing inside a ground-supported sloped bottom tank with internal object are investigated under six different seismic motions categorized as low-, intermediate-, and high-frequency contents. Also, the influence of the internal object on slosh dynamics is investigated suitably for different heights of the object under all earthquakes considered. The dynamic impulsive and convective components of base shear force and hydrodynamic pressure are quantified successfully.
