Directional brightness temperature (DBT) acquired by remote sensing instruments plays a significant role in characterizing the directional anisotropy of land surface, especially for row canopies. The difference between shaded vegetation and sunlit vegetation is ignored in the existing models. In this article, a four-component parameterized directional thermal radiance model (FCPMod) has been proposed to describe the DBT of the row canopy by considering the four components including the sunlit/shaded soil and sunlit/shaded leaf, the improved multiple scattering within the canopy, and the sensor’s field of view (FOV). First, the sensor’s FOV is divided into many tiny rectangles along the row direction and the probabilities of four components in each tiny rectangle are estimated based on the radiative transfer (RT) theory and the bidirectional gap probability. Second, the DBTs are weighted by the four components’ probabilities and brightness temperatures of tiny rectangles. Third, a modified multiple scattering model is proposed to improve the modeling accuracy by considering the contribution of the multiple scattering radiance between soil and canopy. The sensitivity analysis results show that the proposed method performed well compared to the FRA97 model proposed by François et al. (1997) over continuous canopy and the RT model (FovMod) proposed by Ren et al. (2013) over row canopy. The characteristics of turbulent flow at the land-atmosphere interface and within plant canopies are strongly modified by the interactions with vegetation elements. However, only few experimental studies were conducted so far on the effect of changing leaf area on within-canopy turbulence statistics. This aspect is important for deciduous forests and perennial woody crops (orchards and vineyards), where the variation of leaf area is recurrent and substantial during the growing season. Increasing the understanding on canopy turbulence is fundamental to improve the parameterization of multi-layer models to predict vegetation-atmosphere exchanges. In this context, we conducted an experimental campaign in a hedgerow vineyard in North-East Italy carrying out measurements with a vertical array of 3D sonic anemometers, together with canopy structure characterization, in order to analyze the evolution of turbulent flow characteristics from a leafless canopy to full development. Additionally, the effects of wind direction with respect to rows and of atmospheric stability were analyzed. We found that the aerodynamic properties of the vineyard were not only influenced by canopy height and total leaf area, but also by the vertical distribution of leaf density, with the thickness of the mid-upper layer playing a major role in determining the canopy roughness and the mean level of momentum absorption. The characteristics of within-canopy turbulent flow became more similar to a well-defined mixing-layer type flow as foliage developed, but only for diagonal and across-row wind. In contrast, with wind parallel to rows the effect of increasing leaf density was lower and the vineyard was more similar to an open canopy. The influence of atmospheric stability was less important compared to wind direction or leaf density, except for the free convection class. Wind-flow dynamics has been extensively studied over horizontally uniform canopies, but agricultural plantations structured in rows such as vineyards have received less attention. Here, the wind flow over a vineyard is studied in neutral stratification from both large-eddy simulation (LES) and in situ measurements. The impact of row structure on the wind dynamics is investigated over a range of wind directions from cross-row to down-row, and a typical range of row aspect ratio (row separation/height ratio). It is shown that the mean flow over a vineyard is similar to that observed in uniform canopies, especially for wind directions from cross-row to diagonal. For down-row winds, the mean flow exhibits noticeable spatial variability across each elementary row-gap pattern, as the wind is channeled in the inter-row. This spatial variability increases with the aspect ratio. With down-row winds the turbulent structures are also more intermittent and generate larger turbulent kinetic energy and momentum flux. The displacement height and roughness length of the vineyard vary with the aspect ratio in a way similar to their variation with canopy density in uniform canopies. Both parameters take smaller values in down-row wind flow, for which the canopy appears more open. The analysis of velocity spectra and autocorrelation functions shows that vineyard canopies share similar features to uniform canopies in terms of turbulent coherent structures, with only minor changes with wind direction.
