Abstract In this paper, we critically examine the 2022 UK Digital Strategy and argue that the UK government adopts with this policy document a customer-centric vision of governance, which undermines the traditional role of the government as a provider of public services with principles of justice and impartiality. This shift, exacerbated by digital poverty, appears incongruent with the social contract between citizens and the state. We employ a critical discourse analysis to identify contradictory outcomes resulting from these neoliberal policies and showcase that the UK Digital Strategy, while seemingly committed to aspects of equality and inclusivity, appear to prioritise almost entirely market rather than citizens’ interests.

BackgroundGlobally, populations are aging, generating concerns about the sustainability of health and social care provision. In terms of the public provision of social care in particular, unpaid carers provide much of the support to people with disabilities and older people. In addition, there is an increased onus in many countries on digital transformation projects, in the hope that the digitalization of services can create efficiencies and savings in both costs and care labor. In England, the focus of this paper, the shift to digital services is also framed as a means to enhance choice and control for older unpaid carers, while being part of a broader offering that includes nondigital alternatives and support to mitigate digital exclusion. ObjectiveThis study examines the impact of digitalization on older, unpaid carers—a group more likely to be both expected to engage digitally with services and at risk of digital exclusion—in England, focusing on their lived experiences in terms of caring and access to social care. MethodsWe used a constructionist approach to thematic analysis, where data from 48 older unpaid carers collected through focus groups were analyzed using thematic analysis, resulting in 4 prevailing themes. ResultsOur findings indicated that while unpaid carers largely acknowledge the benefits of digitalization, they also highlight several points of failure, whereby engagement with digital spaces is experienced as coercive and exacerbates feelings of exclusion. These are further worsened by government failures to address issues of connectivity, imposing additional financial burdens and complicating tasks such as benefit applications. ConclusionsIn this study, we have highlighted the need for greater involvement in shaping both policy and technological solutions, which in turn will be more inclusive and aligned to the aspirations and circumstances of older carers.

This paper delineates the main quality criteria across qualitative methods: providing a holistic framework that covers fundamental principles as well as nuanced, context-specific guidelines relevant to a chosen qualitative approach. First, we demonstrate why this overview is needed, in part because of an increasing emphasis on finding sound ways of appraising qualitative studies, the lack of agreement on quality markers, and the variety of qualitative research methodologies available. Next, we present general criteria for quality across all qualitative methods, before setting out method specific criteria for four commonly used qualitative research approaches: Reflexive Thematic Analysis (RTA), Interpretative Phenomenological Analysis (IPA), Critical Discursive Psychology/Discursive Psychology (CDP/DP) and Constructivist Grounded Theory (CGT). While the focus is on providing criteria specific to these methodological approaches, we also describe the broader philosophical foundations underpinning these approaches and other branches within these philosophies, recognising that methodological criteria can be contrasting and competing even within methodologies. The integration of general and approach-specific criteria cultivates a deeper understanding of both the philosophical underpinnings and practical intricacies of qualitative inquiry, empowering researchers to navigate the methodological landscape with critical acumen and intellectual humility. Finally, we compare the four methodologies in terms of key features and qualities they aim to achieve. The paper emphasizes that even though there are criteria that are common across the field, it is essential to maintain the specific stance of each individual methodological approach.

Abstract This paper discusses results obtained from in situ analysis of the tesserae of the Roman mosaic of Los Amores (Cástulo site, Linares, Spain) dating back to the turn of the 1st to the 2nd century AD. Specifically, it focuses on the scene The Judgment of Paris. In view of the exceptional state of preservation of the mosaic, from which very few tesserae had fallen off, non-invasive methods with portable Micro Raman Spectroscopy (MRS) and hand-held X-ray fluorescence (hXRF) and data assessment by use of principal component analysis and binary representations were selected. The results obtained allow to evaluate both the analytical method and the portable equipment used, as well as to classify the raw materials, the colouring agents and the opacifiers used. MRS analysis proved crucial for the identification of stone tesserae (ironstones, carbonate and siliciclastic rocks) and for the identification of the type of glasses used (soda-lime-silicate and lead type glasses) based on the analysis of two detached tesserae. hXRF analysis of the glass tesserae identified both colouring agents (Co, Cu, Pb, Zn) and opacifiers (calcium antimonate). The data obtained lend themselves to an assessment of the degradation process that threaten the integrity of the mosaic. The identification of tessera made of specific stone materials (especially ironstone) and of lead glass tesserae suggest the existence of a mosaic workshop in the Upper Guadalquivir (Eastern Andalusia, Spain).

This study explores the impact of rhetorical strategies on the writing techniques of pre-service teachers. It specifically examines how process-based writing instruction, rooted in Systemic Functional Linguistics (SFL), enhances the ability of student teachers to employ effective writing methods in crafting argumentative essays. Utilizing a sample of 98 student teachers from Greece, the research was conducted through a performance - based essay task, supported by two think-aloud protocols. This approach allowed for a detailed examination of the writing techniques used by pre-service teachers, both before and after receiving process-based writing instruction. The study focuses on the application and improvement of writing methods through the use of a rhetorical process approach. The results highlight the significance of rhetorical strategies, such as idea generation and rewriting, in the development of effective writing skills. The study reveals a clear improvement in the ability of students to choose and integrate relevant ideas into their essays after mastering these techniques. Additionally, the findings suggest the frequent use of translation strategies from native to foreign language s in concluding an article. This research underscores the importance of teaching rhetorical strategies in pre-service teacher training programs. By focusing on these techniques, educators can better equip student teachers with the skills necessary to become proficient writers, capable of addressing various audiences effectively. Cefiderocol appears promising, as it can overcome most β-lactam resistance mechanisms (including β-lactamases, porin mutations, and efflux pumps). Resistance is uncommon according to large multinational cohorts, including against isolates resistant to carbapenems, ceftazidime/avibactam, ceftolozane/tazobactam, and colistin. However, alarming proportions of resistance have been reported in some recent cohorts (up to 50%). A systematic review was conducted in PubMed and Scopus from inception to May 2022 to review mechanisms of resistance, prevalence of heteroresistance, and in vivo emergence of resistance to cefiderocol during treatment. A variety of mechanisms, typically acting in concert, have been reported to confer resistance to cefiderocol: β-lactamases (especially NDM, KPC and AmpC variants conferring resistance to ceftazidime/avibactam, OXA-427, and PER- and SHV-type ESBLs), porin mutations, and mutations affecting siderophore receptors, efflux pumps, and target (PBP-3) modifications. Coexpression of multiple β-lactamases, often in combination with permeability defects, appears to be the main mechanism of resistance. Heteroresistance is highly prevalent (especially in A. baumannii), but its clinical impact is unclear, considering that in vivo emergence of resistance appears to be low in clinical studies. Nevertheless, cases of in vivo emerging cefiderocol resistance are increasingly being reported. Continued surveillance of cefiderocol’s activity is important as this agent is introduced in clinical practice.

The main structural building blocks that form manganese oxides are MnO6 octahedra; these share corners and edges to construct specific structures, which can either be tunneled or layered. In the layered structures, that is, phyllomanganates, the MnO6 octahedra form sheets, which, in turn, alternate with sheets of metal oxides and H2O. These metal ions can vary (Zn, Co, Ni, Al, Li, ...) and give rise to an entire range of different metal oxides. The characterization of these layered materials is important as they have various economical/industrial applications. Birnessite‐type materials, a specific type of layered manganese oxides, are widely studied for their use as cathode materials in alkali‐ion batteries. Phyllomanganates are also commonly found as constituents in sediments and soils or as coatings on rock surfaces. Their natural occurrence as black colored components have ensured that these minerals were also applied as pigments in archaeological and historical contexts. They are, for example, often found in rock art paintings and on pottery. As the oxides are used in unique archaeological objects, Raman spectroscopy is an evident choice for characterization due to its non‐destructive nature of analysis. In the current study, five mineral samples of (layered) manganese oxides are analyzed with different Raman instrumentations, including mobile systems and a benchtop micro‐Raman setup. The characterization of each selected manganese oxide and their comparison with literature data is discussed for the micro‐Raman instrumentation. Manganese oxides have attracted the interest of many researchers due to their broad application field. These oxides possess various electrochemical, adsorption and catalysis properties and are as such applied in the industrial context, for example, steel industry, catalysis and removal of toxins in the ground or in waste water. In the archaeometrical field, manganese oxides have been used as pigments on various artefacts such as pottery and rock art paintings. The diversity of manganese oxide applications highlights the need for a well‐defined Raman spectroscopic database with correct characterization of these compounds. However, identification of manganese oxides by Raman spectroscopy is challenging due to the wide variety of manganese oxides, and manganese oxides are weak Raman scatterers and are susceptible under the laser light. As such, characterization by Raman spectroscopy is not straight forward. In this research, we have focussed on seven natural, mineral (tunnel) samples that were identified by micro‐Raman spectroscopy using two different laser wavelengths (785 and 532 nm). The experimental conditions were controlled to not introduce any modifications (degradation and/or phase transition) of the manganese oxide species. Both lasers have proven to be successful and were able to retrieve well‐characterized Raman spectra for each of the manganese oxide phase, which were compared with published literature. We design, implement and evaluate performance of Exantas application which is compatible with Android Operating System Smartphone devices. As Exantas tool was able to show ancients travelers the correct route to follow, we show that our application can help educational staff to improve their skills and evaluate on the fly how efficient is the educational style that they follow. Results can help teachers measure while teaching how much of the lessons content has been successfully absorbed by students and what are the topics that need further analysis or even a completely new explanation approach. Moreover, teachers are now able to perform quickly and without effort, small evaluation tests during their lessons for each student individually and keep tracking of their overall semester performance, concluding in a more extensive, generic and reliable grading system. As experiments show, Exantas is able to reduce teaching efforts and to reveal real lessons comprehension status since teachers can make multiple Questions to all students and receive answers in seconds. Moreover, all queries are processed anonymously ensuring anonymity and integrity since students are not afraid to provide their actual answers when teaching method is evaluated, and individually for each account when students’ performance is checked.

Raman spectroscopy is frequently implemented in the analysis of art objects. Especially its non‐destructive character and the advent of mobile instruments, often equipped with fibre optics probe heads, have opened the doors for many direct investigations of artworks. However, Raman spectroscopy usually requires stable positioning of the objective lens, close to the paint surface. Consequently, and despite the use of an extensive range of positioning equipment, it is not possible to reach every spot of a large artefact. Positioning, and as a consequence measuring, is becoming even more critical for 3D objects. Therefore, we examine the characteristics and explore the opportunities for the investigation of art objects that can be obtained by using a zoom lens, which is suitable for the Raman investigation at working distances between 6 and 60 cm. Hydrated aluminum‐rich sulfates belong to less widespread secondary minerals on Mars, which are probably connected with hydrothermal alterations. On Earth, such sulfates result from acidic weathering of aluminosilicates, and their formation is controlled by factors such as pH, temperature, or water activity. Physical–chemical conditions can be reconstructed if specific sulfate phases are detected, and therefore, the investigation of sulfate assemblages in high‐temperature settings is important for planetology and exobiology research. Raman spectroscopy is a powerful analytical tool for the discrimination of sulfates, and the degree of hydration, which is a sensitive marker of temperature conditions, can be tracked using this method. However, spectral similarities of sulfates and metastability and rapid transformations may hinder their correct identification. We take advantage of in situ and laboratory Raman spectroscopy to characterize uncommon anhydrous and hydrated Al‐NH4 sulfate mineralogy which forms under elevated temperature at the Anna burning coal waste dump, Alsdorf, Germany, and can be considered as analogous to fumarolic environments. We detected a suite of hydrated Al sulfates (e.g. alunogen, khademite, and tschermigite) in the medium‐temperature zones (~50°C). To minimize possible rehydration processes, we deployed two miniaturized Raman spectrometers (532 and 1064 nm) for field investigations in the high‐temperature zone (~130°C to 150°C). Mixtures of anhydrous (godovikovite and millosevichite) and hydrated phases along with intermediate phases were detected in the field as well as in the laboratory. Such observations are consistent with the premise that the degree hydration of sulfates increase with decreasing temperature. These results confirm that Raman spectroscopy is, despite several analytical challenges, capable of distinguishing Al sulfates, and their hydration states, within complex aggregates and crusts, and future applications in planetary research are promising. Transition-metal dichalcogenide (TMD) nanosheets have become an intensively investigated topic in the field of 2D nanomaterials, especially due to the direct semiconductor nature, and the broken inversion symmetry in the odd-layer number, of some of their family members. These properties make TMDs attractive for different technological applications such as photovoltaics, optoelectronics, valleytronics, and hydrogen evolution reactions. Among them, MoX2 (X = S and Se) are turned to direct gap when their thickness is thinned down to monolayer, and thus, efforts toward obtaining large-scale monolayer TMDs are crucial for technological applications. Colloidal synthesis of TMDs has been developed in recent years, as it provides a cost-efficient and scalable way to produce few-layer TMDs having homogeneous size and thickness, yet obtaining a monolayer has proven challenging. Here, we present a method for the colloidal synthesis of mono- and few-layer MoX2 (X = S and Se) using elemental chalcogenide and metal chloride as precursors. Using a synthesis with slow injection of the MoCl5 precursor under a nitrogen atmosphere, and optimizing the synthesis parameters with a design of experiments approach, we obtained a MoX2 sample with the semiconducting (1H) phase and optical band gaps of 1.96 eV for 1H–MoS2 and 1.67 eV for 1H–MoSe2, respectively, consistent with a large monolayer yield in the ensemble. Both display photoluminescence at cryogenic and room temperature, paving the way for optical spectroscopy studies and photonic applications of colloidal TMD nanosheets. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Micro‐Raman spectroscopy was used for the analysis of painted pre‐Islamic ceramics from the Kur River Basin (Fars Province, Southwest Iran). A total of 21 sherds were analysed dating from the Neolithic to the Late Bronze Age and belonging to different ceramic wares and sites. The main focus of this research was to identify the pigments used for the red and black decorations of the different ceramic wares from the Kur River Basin and to elaborate on the manganese identification and their differentiation through Raman spectroscopy. Haematite (α‐Fe2O3) and manganese oxides could be identified as the main compounds for the decoration in the different ceramic wares, except for the Bakun ware in which also carbon black could be determined as a probable pigment for black decoration using micro‐Raman spectroscopy. The identification and discrimination of manganese oxides were a meticulous task due to the sensitivity of these materials to the laser power, which can provoke degradation. Nevertheless, Raman spectroscopy was successfully applied for the identification of spectral patterns of the ceramics and their attribution to several manganese oxides present in the decorative mixtures, such as jacobsite (MnFe2O4), bixbyite (α‐Mn2O3) and hausmannite (Mn3O4). Micro‐Raman spectroscopy was employed for the analysis of samples collected from the shelters Campo Cerda 1, Angostura Blanca and Campo Moncada 1 located in Piedra Parada valley, Chubut province, Argentinian Patagonia. Different coloured layers, degradation products and rock supports were analysed. Haematite (α‐Fe2O3), goethite (α‐FeOOH), green earth and gypsum (CaSO4 ·2H2O) were responsible for the main colouration of the pigmented layers together with other components. Gypsum, Ca‐oxalates and calcite were the major degradation materials affecting the rock paintings and the rock support. Different types of silicates, apatite [Ca5(PO4)3(F,Cl,OH)] and goethite were positively characterized in the rock support. Point analysis and micro‐Raman mappings contributed towards a better understanding of the materials and layer sequencing of the samples extracted. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Zeolites are present in numerous outcrops of volcanites of different ages in Sicily (Italy). Some of these outcrops are important because they constitute the ideal genesis conditions of some of these minerals, which represent geological indicators of chemical and geothermal gradients involved during their formation. For this purpose, a group of zeolites coming from areas of the Ionian coast and Palagonia village (Eastern Sicily) was investigated by means of Raman spectroscopy. In the geological record, these areas have been influenced by intense volcanic events that produced mineralization of hydrothermal origin. Sicilian zeolite samples were analysed in situ using different mobile Raman apparatus, directly on the outcrops of Aci Castello and the nearby Lachea Island, or in local collections where they are preserved. Some of these samples have been then analysed using laboratory micro‐Raman to compare the results and identify the zeolite types. The strength and weakness points of each instrument have been highlighted. Often, the Raman spectra of zeolites are affected by broad fluorescence, making them of difficult interpretation. However, satisfying results were obtained with portable devices, whose identifications were confirmed by micro‐Raman, discerning zeolites of different groups, such as analcime, chabazite, natrolite and phillipsite. The use of portable instruments has demonstrated the possibility to obtain identification of zeolites and related minerals both on site and in the laboratory, whose results match with the geological setting of the considered areas. Raman spectroscopy is considered as one of the most appreciated analytical techniques in the cultural heritage research field, thanks to some of its favourable characteristics such as the relatively quick time of analysis, identification of both inorganic and organic molecules. The necessity of conducting the research non‐destructively on‐site and directly on the artefact brought the technique out of the laboratory. Since 2004, when the first non‐commercial mobile Raman instrument for in situ applications on cultural heritage objects was realized, years of continuous technical and instrumental developments have passed. Today, on‐site Raman spectroscopy is considered as a cornerstone technique for the documentation of materials of works of art and the assessment of their conservation state without jeopardizing the integrity of the artefact. This paper reviews some of the breakthroughs of Raman analysis of cultural heritage objects, conducted on field (museum environment, outdoors and archaeological complexes). This paper critically compares the performance of four non‐invasive techniques that match the accuracy, flexibility, time‐efficiency, and transportability required for in situ characterization of leaded glass windows: macroscopic X‐ray fluorescence imaging (MA‐XRF), UV–Vis–NIR, Raman spectroscopy, and infrared thermography (IRT). In order to compare the techniques on equal grounds, all techniques were tested independently of each other by separate research groups on the same historical leaded window tentatively dated to the 17th century, without prior knowledge. The aim was to assess the ability of these techniques to document the conservation history of the window by classifying and grouping the colorless glass panes, based on differences in composition. IRT, MA‐XRF and UV–Vis–NIR spectroscopy positively distinguished at least two glass groups, with MA‐XRF providing the most detailed chemical information. In particular, based on the ratio between the network modifier (K) and network stabilizer (Ca) and on the level of colorants and decolorizers (Fe, Mn, As), the number of plausible glass families could be strongly reduced. In addition, UV–Vis–NIR detected cobalt at ppm level and gave more specific information on the chromophore Fe2+/Fe3+ ratio. Raman spectroscopy was hampered by fluorescence caused by the metal ions of the decolorizer in most of the panes, but nevertheless identified one group as HLLA. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Iridescence is widespread in the living world, occurring in organisms as diverse as bacteria, plants, and animals. Yet, compared to pigment-based forms of coloration, we know surprisingly little about the developmental and molecular bases of the structural colors that give rise to iridescence. Birds display a rich diversity of iridescent structural colors that are produced in feathers by the arrangement of melanin-containing organelles called melanosomes into nanoscale configurations, but how these often unusually shaped melanosomes form, or how they are arranged into highly organized nanostructures, remains largely unknown. Here, we use functional genomics to explore the developmental basis of iridescent plumage using superb starlings (Lamprotornis superbus), which produce both iridescent blue and non-iridescent red feathers. Through morphological and chemical analyses, we confirm that hollow, flattened melanosomes in iridescent feathers are eumelanin-based, whereas melanosomes in non-iridescent feathers are solid and amorphous, suggesting that high pheomelanin content underlies red coloration. Intriguingly, the nanoscale arrangement of melanosomes within the barbules was surprisingly similar between feather types. After creating a new genome assembly, we use transcriptomics to show that non-iridescent feather development is associated with genes related to pigmentation, metabolism, and mitochondrial function, suggesting non-iridescent feathers are more energetically expensive to produce than iridescent feathers. However, iridescent feather development is associated with genes related to structural and cellular organization, suggesting that, while nanostructures themselves may passively assemble, barbules and melanosomes may require active organization to give them their shape. An in situ archaeometrical campaign was organized in 2018 for the physicochemical analysis of the exceptional Mosaico de los Amores of the Cástulo archaeological site (Linares, Spain). Several mobile instruments were brought on the field to investigate the colourful tesserae of the mosaic. The main aim of the current research paper is the comparison of different mobile instruments and their applicability on measuring in open air environments. In this study, the comparison of four mobile Raman instruments, using different excitation lasers and technologies, is discussed. Three portable, the EZRaman‐I dual Raman analyser from TSI Inc. The São Domingos area (Corte do Pinto, Portugal) represents a large sulfide ore deposit in the Iberian Pyrite Belt that was mined primarily for copper and sulfur in the past. Currently, the deserted mine and mine wastes are the reason for the production of acid mining drainage releasing potentially harmful elements. Because metastable secondary sulfates may temporary sink toxic pollutants, the in situ monitoring of their distribution is required. In this work, we tested a handheld Raman spectrometer equipped with a 532 nm laser excitation for this task. Twelve selected samples of complex composition were analyzed directly in the field using the handheld Raman spectrometer. For comparison, the collected samples were additionally analyzed through laboratory‐based Raman spectroscopy and X‐ray diffraction. Based on the in situ measurements, rozenite, melanterite, coquimbite, jarosite, metavoltine, chalcanthite, bonattite, antlerite, halotrichite‐group minerals, gypsum, and sulfur were detected. The results show that handheld Raman spectrometer is comparable with other laboratory techniques and such handheld systems can be deployed successfully for monitoring of sulfate distribution directly on site. We design, implement and evaluate performance of Exantas application which is compatible with Android Operating System Smartphone devices. As Exantas tool was able to show ancients travelers the correct route to follow, we show that our application can help educational staff to improve their skills and evaluate on the fly how efficient is the educational style that they follow. Results can help teachers measure while teaching how much of the lessons content has been successfully absorbed by students and what are the topics that need further analysis or even a completely new explanation approach. Moreover, teachers are now able to perform quickly and without effort, small evaluation tests during their lessons for each student individually and keep tracking of their overall semester performance, concluding in a more extensive, generic and reliable grading system. As experiments show, Exantas is able to reduce teaching efforts and to reveal real lessons comprehension status since teachers can make multiple uestions to all students and receive answers in seconds. Moreover, all queries are processed anonymously ensuring anonymity and integrity since students are not afraid to provide their actual answers when teaching method is evaluated, and individually for each account when students' performance is checked.
