Objective: To evaluate the effect of biological control agents (BCA) and two biological formulations (Bio-Terra and Bio-CNPR) against the phytopathogens found in the soil of huacle chili (Capsicum annuum) plantations, in order to obtain healthy seedlings. Design/Methodology/Approach: The following design variables were evaluated: germination (%), disease incidence (%), and survival (%). Stem height and root length were also evaluated. The experimental unit was a tray with n=30 seedlings per each treatments (T0, T1, T2, T3, and T4) and four repetitions. An analysis of variance (ANOVA) was used. Tukey's mean test was applied (using the Minitab Statistical program version 20.0) in units that presented differences (p ≤ 0.05). Results: The phytopathogenic microorganism Fusarium spp. was isolated from the soil of the plots cultivated with huacle chili. The T1 treatment recorded the best inhibitory effect against Fusarium spp.: it had 92.2% germination, 18.3% incidence of Fusarium spp., and 82% surviving seedlings (with an average height of 16 cm and a root length of 7.9 cm). The sterilization of the soil lead to T4 having the best results in germination, incidence, and survival, since Fusarium spp. did not damage huacle chili seedlings. In contrast, T0 did not prosper neither with BCA nor with biological products, since all the seedlings in non-sterile soil died. Study Limitations/Implications: A plastic barrier was placed between the trays with the chili seedlings to avoid cross-contamination between treatments. Findings/Conclusions: T1 (the BCA with nitrogen-fixing bacteria and B. subtilis) recorded the best counteracting results against the damage generated by Fusarium spp. Their antagonism allowed a high percentage of survival of huacle chili seedlings and encouraged plant development through the best root growth and height of the seedlings. Common bean rust, Bean golden yellow mosaic virus (BGYMV), Bean common mosaic virus (BCMV), and Bean common mosaic necrosis virus (BCMNV) are devastating diseases of dry bean (Phaseolus vulgaris L.) in Central America and the Caribbean. The development of dry bean cultivars with enhanced levels of genetic resistance to these and other diseases is an important goal of the University of Puerto Rico (UPR) and other dry bean breeding programs in Central America and the Caribbean. PR1572‐19 (Reg. no. GP‐308, PI 692976) and PR1572‐26 (Reg. no. GP‐307, PI 692975) are multiple virus‐ and rust‐resistant pinto bean germplasm lines adapted to the humid tropics that were developed and released cooperatively in 2019 by the UPR Agricultural Experiment Station, the Instituto Dominicano de Investigaciones Agropecuarias y Forestales, and the USDA–ARS. Both PR1572‐19 and PR1572‐26 possess the bgm‐1 gene for resistance to BGYMV, the I and bc‐3 loci that provide broad resistance to all strains of BCMV and BCMNV in the United States and the Caribbean, and the Ur‐3 and Ur‐11 loci that confer comprehensive resistance to all known races of the bean rust pathogen. PR1572‐26 also has the SW12 quantitative trait locus marker associated with resistance to BGYMV. PR1572‐19 and PR1572‐26 produced mean seed yields similar to the check cultivar 'Santa Fe' in trials conducted in Puerto Rico and mean seed yields comparable to the pinto cultivar 'La Paz' in the Cooperative Dry Bean Nursery conducted in Puerto Rico. Both lines should serve as useful sources of resistance to BGYMV, BCMV, BCMNV, and bean rust for common beans of the Durango race that includes the pinto and great northern market classes. This article presents information on the registration of Carrizalito small red bean. Small red dry bean Carrizalito was developed at the Escuela Agricola Panamericana in Zamorano, Honduras, and released for Honduras in 2003 and Costa Rica in 2004, in collaboration with the National Bean Programs of Honduras and Costa Rica, and the University of Puerto Rico. Carrizalito is a high yielding, disease resistant cultivar, adapted to the midaltitude bean production regions of Central America. In 2004, Carrizalito was mechanically inoculated at the University of Puerto Rico with the NL3 strain of Bean common mosaic necrotic virus (BCMV) and found to have top necrosis caused by the presence of the dominant I gene for resistance to BCMV. Ashy stem blight is favored by warm dry conditions associated with drought stress. Seedlings of Carrizalito were inoculated in the greenhouse at the UPR with the ashy stem blight pathogen Macrophominaphaseolina and found to be resistant. Carrizalito has an indeterminate upright, Type III growth habit with a short vine. Carrizalito flowers in 35 to 37 d and matures in 68 to 70 d.

The viscacha (Lagostomus maximus maximus) is a seasonal South American wild rodent. The adult males exhibit an annual reproductive cycle with periods of maximum and minimum gonadal activity. Four segments have been identified in the epididymis of this species: initial, caput, corpus, and cauda. The main objective of this work was to relate the seasonal morphological changes observed in the epididymal duct with the data from epididymal sperm during periods of activity and gonadal regression using light and scanning electron microscopy (SEM). Under light and electron microscopy, epididymal corpus and cauda showed marked seasonal variations in structural parameters and in the distribution of different cellular populations of epithelium. Initial and caput segments showed mild morphological variations between the two periods. Changes in epididymal sperm morphology were observed in the periods analyzed and an increased number of abnormal gametes were found during the regression period. During this period, anomalies were found mainly in the head, midpiece, and neck, while in the activity period, defects were found only in the head. Our results confirm that the morphological characteristics of the epididymal segments, as well as sperm morphology, undergo significant changes during the reproductive cycle of Lagostomus.

Little is known about the evolution of vertebrate spermatozoa. In most eutherian taxa a high degree of uniformity in sperm shapes and dimensions among species was observed. The aim of this work is to trace a possible evolutionary change in sperm morphology and morphometry in dasypodids. The main difference between the spermatozoa of the studied armadillos is the shape of the sperm heads. We have classified the spermatozoa into 4 different groups according with their head shapes. Sperm from group 1 (Dasypus) are considered ancestral and are clearly separated from the others. The remaining sperm types are derivative ones; those from group 2 (Tolypeutes) are farther from those of groups 3 (Priodontes and Cabassous) and 4 (Chaetopractus, Zaedyus and Euphractus) which would have recently differentiated from each other. The sperm shape and size are not constant across taxa in armadillos; an important evolutive differentiation was established on the sperm morphology and morphometry between the different genera in Dasypodidae.

Objective: To describe survival of lupus in South European Spanish patients., Patients and Methods: Observational study of all SLE Spanish patients seen at three University Hospitals between 1975 and 1993. The charts of all patients were retrospectively reviewed. Sixty-four clinic and laboratory variables were extracted from charts. Univariate analysis, multivariate Cox proportional hazard regression analysis, actuarial life tables and multiple logistic regression analysis were used to calculate survival probability and identify variables associated with survival., Results: Three hundred and six (275 female and 31 male) patients were identified. Their mean age at diagnosis was 31.9 years (range 4 to 85). The mean duration of followup was 79 (1-126) months. Thirty-one patients died. The most common cause of death was infection (29%). Five, 10 and 15 years' survival rate was 90%+/-0.0158, 85%+/-0.0262 and 80%+/-0.0413, respectively. Log-rank analysis showed that male sex, proteinuria and nephropathy at diagnosis were associated with poor survival. By univariate and multivariate analysis male gender, nephropathy and CNS involvement were associated with worse survival., Conclusion: In SLE patients from Spain, rate of survival is similar to other Caucasian patients, and better than other ethnic groups of Spanish ancestry. Other factors rather than genetic factors could explain our findings.

There is evidence suggesting that clinical manifestations and severity in systemic lupus erythematosus (SLE) are associated with age, sex and ethnicity. The influence of genetic factors, particularly HLA antigens, on disease expression is revealed by the diversity of clinical conditions in patients from different ethnic groups. The aim of this work was to analyze the impact of demographic factors on SLE expression in the Spanish population. Therefore, a retrospective analysis was undertaken of clinical records of 307 patients diagnosed in three Rheumatology Services, with a mean follow-up of 79 months. The distribution of clinical manifestations according to age and sex was studied and compared with those observed in other ethnic groups. The results show the influence of sex and age on our patient population. Thus, female had a higher frequency of malar rash, photosensitivity and lymphopenia. Males had a higher CNS and renal involvement. Patients under 15 years had a higher involvement of CNS and kidney. Patients under 15 years had a higher frequency of nephropathy, hematological, cutaneous and CNS changes. Patients older than 50 had a higher frequency of pleuropericarditis, but without renal involvement. Our ethnic group expressed a disease with a severity similar to that observed in north-european caucasians, higher than in north-american caucasians and lower than in south-american caucasians, asiatic and africans. In conclusion, patients with SLE from the south-european ethnic groups express a clinical picture with characteristics and severity similar to those observed in europeans from other latitudes and different from those reported in other ethnic groups.

We studied in the rat epididymis the presence of membrane-bounded vesicles in the stereociliar areas of the epithelial cells. The intimate contact between principal cell stereocilia and luminal spermatozoa was also explored. The epididymidis of adult male albino rats were fixed with Mollenhauer's fixative via the thoracic aorta; they were removed and the caput and the cauda were separated and fixed for 4 additional hours at 4 degrees C. After fixation, the samples were processed with routine techniques for transmission and scanning electron microscopy. The study showed membrane-bounded vesicles in the lumen of the caput and cauda epididymidis. They are present between stereocilia, in the most peripheral regions of the epididymal lumen, and in a stereocilia-free zone in the apical plasma membrane of the principal cells. The smaller vesicles are located near the apical surface of the latter, and the larger ones are located near the tips of the stereocilia. Their contents are electron lucent in some images and electron dense in others. In several thin sections some of the vesicles are observed to have a stalk. This suggests that the possible mode of production may be an exocytotic process. Some membrane-bounded vesicles were found to be in contact with the head or the tail of maturating spermatozoa. Moreover, an intimate contact was found to exist in the epididymidis between the plasma membranes of the spermatozoa and the stereocilia. These observations seem to suggest two possible mechanisms for sperm-epididymal cell relations: 1) release of a secretion product via the membrane-bounded vesicles and 2) direct contact between stereocilia and spermatozoa.

In order to increase the value of the zona-free hamster oocyte penetration test, a comparatively simple and fast method using the fluorochrome Hoechst 33342 was developed. Human spermatozoa were washed and incubated 1 hr medium BWW for capacitation. Hamster oocytes were stripped of cumulus oophorus and zona pellucida with hyaluronidase and trypsin, washed and used immediately. Thirty oocytes were placed in a drop of BWW containing 3,5.10(6)/ml of human spermatozoa under mineral oil. The sperm-oocyte preparation was incubated for 3 hr at 37 degrees C, during the last 15 min of incubation, the fluorochrome Hoechst 33342 (H) was added and incubation was allowed to proceed until the incubation time was over. Observations showed that the female pronucleus, eccentrically placed, gives a bright green-bluish fluorescence whereas chromatin of sperm heads shows different stages of decondensation and also a bright fluorescence. This inexpensive method has given consistent results in a large number of cases and provides an additional new approach to the "penetration test" as a proof of the capacity to form a "male pronucleus".

Morphological changes in sperm are one aspect of a maturation process during epididymal transit in mammals. The literature mentions only, for different strains of rats, a remodeling and decrease in size of the acrosome. In the present work, the sperm were obtained from caput, corpus, and cauda epididymis of the albino rat. Samples were processed for scanning electron microscopy, with routine techniques, and for light microscopy and video microscopy. It appeared, with these techniques, that the acrosomal curvature and the whole head surface area of the rat sperm decrease during the epididymal transit. To measure these changes, a geometrical method was designed, and surface measurements were made using a computer program. It was found that the caput sperm head has the greatest surface area and a sharper acrosome bend than the cauda sperm. In an attempt to explain the above-mentioned changes, the suggestion is offered that some compactation of the nucleus and acrosomal material could be related to the decrease of the surface area.
