The increasing traffic congestion has led to several negative consequences, with traffic oscillation being a major contributor to the problem. To mitigate traffic waves, the impact of the connected automated vehicles (CAVs) equipped with adaptive cruise control (ACC), FollowerStopper (FS), and jam-absorption driving (JAD) strategies on circular and linear scenarios have been evaluated. The manual vehicle is the intelligent driver model (IDM) and human driver model (HDM), respectively. The results suggest that on the ring road, the traffic performance of mixed traffic improves gradually with the increase of the proportion of CAVs under the ACC. Moreover, the traffic performance for the JAD strategy does not improve infinitely with the increase in the number of CAVs. Conversely, the FS strategy suppresses traffic waves at the cost of reducing traffic flow, and more CAVs are not beneficial for mixed traffic. It is interesting to note that under optimal performance in these three strategies, the FS strategy has the lowest number of CAVs, while the ACC strategy has the highest number of CAVs. For the linear road, it demonstrates that the JAD strategy exhibits a superior performance compared to the ACC. Traffic waves in traffic flow significantly impact road throughput and fuel consumption and may even lead to severe safety issues. Currently, in connected and autonomous environments, the jam-absorption driving (JAD) strategy shows good performance in dissipating traffic waves. However, the previous JAD strategy has mostly focused on wave dissipation without adequately assessing traffic efficiency and safety. To address this gap, an optimal control problem for JAD in mixed traffic is proposed to reduce traffic waves. The prediction model is developed using the car-following model within a model predictive control (MPC) framework. The Helly model is selected for the manual vehicle. This is because the Helly model is a linear model that describes the car-following phenomenon accurately without delay effect. In addition, the objective function of the prediction model considers both traffic safety and efficiency while satisfying mechanical and safety constraints. Simulation results indicate that the proposed methodology can effectively reduce traffic jams and improve traffic performance on a one-lane freeway. Evaluating potential of shifting to low-carbon transport modes requires considering limited travel-time budget of travelers. Despite previous studies focusing on time-relevant modal shift, there is a lack of integrated and transferable computational frameworks, which would use emerging smartphone-based high-resolution longitudinal travel datasets. This research explains and illustrates a computational framework for this purpose. The proposed framework compares observed trips with computed alternative trips and estimates the extent to which alternatives could reduce carbon emission without a significant increase in travel time.. The framework estimates potential of substituting observed car and public-transport trips with lower-carbon modes, evaluating parameters per individual traveler as well as for the whole city, from a set of temporal and spatial viewpoints. The illustrated parameters include the size and distribution of modal shifts, emission savings, and increased active-travel growth, as clustered by target mode, departure time, trip distance, and spatial coverage throughout the city. Parameters are also evaluated based on the frequently repeated trips. We evaluate usefulness of the method by analyzing door-to-door trips of a few hundred travelers, collected from smartphone traces in the Helsinki metropolitan area, Finland, during several months. The experiment's preliminary results show that, for instance, on average, 20% of frequent car trips of each traveler have a low-carbon alternative, and if the preferred alternatives are chosen, about 8% of the carbon emissions could be saved. In addition, it is seen that the spatial potential of bike as an alternative is much more sporadic throughout the city compared to that of bus, which has relatively more trips from/to city center. With few changes, the method would be applicable to other cities, bringing possibly different quantitative results. In particular, having more thorough data from large number of participants could provide implications for transportation researchers and planners to identify groups or areas for promoting mode shift. This document is a correction notice for an article titled "Assignment of a Synthetic Population for Activity-Based Modeling Employing Publicly Available Data." The correction addresses an error in Figure 12b of the original publication. The mistake involved comparing the total origins (residences) from each district in the synthetic population with the total destinations (workplaces) from the baseline dataset. The correction states that the performance of the algorithm is actually better than reported when the destinations are compared correctly. The dynamic spatiotemporal characteristics of queues at urban intersections are crucial to traffic operation tasks such as signal performance measure and signal optimization. This paper addresses the high time-resolution estimation of queue profile at urban signalized intersection using Extended Kalman Filtering (EKF) with data of connected vehicles (CVs). The main features of this work are as follows: (i) a machine learning method was applied to construct a dynamic shockwave propagation model based on shockwave theory and historical data of CVs; (ii) a heuristic approach was proposed to measure the shockwave speed for use in EKF; (iii) an urban queue estimator was designed to combine the dynamic shockwave propagation model and real-time shockwave information via EKF to deliver second-by-second queue profile estimates. The queue estimator does not require any priori information about vehicle arrival patterns and the market penetration rate (MPR) of CVs. The performance and robustness of the queue estimator were evaluated using both simulation and real-world CV data. The results show that the method can provide satisfactory queue estimation results at various MPR levels of CVs, with the estimation error of 2.5 vehicles at the MPR of 5%, and of 0.5 vehicle at the MPR of 40%. Three filtering-based approaches to freeway traffic state estimation are studied using measurements from connected vehicles and also a minimum number of fixed detectors. These approaches are: Method 1 based on EKF and the second-order traffic flow model METANET, Methods 2 and 3 based on KF and the conservation equation that is driven by mean speed data of connected vehicles under a speed-uniformity assumption. Each method is capable of estimating segment traffic flow variables (speeds, densities, and flows) as well as segment market penetration rates (MPRs) of connected vehicles. The three methods are evaluated and compared in depth using NGSIM data with respect to their traffic state estimator design, data requirements, capabilities, limitations in the mixed sensing case. Aiming at operating effectively future traffic systems, we propose here a novel methodology for integrated lane-changing and ramp metering control that exploits the presence of connected vehicles. In particular, we assume that a percentage of vehicles can receive and implement specific control tasks (e.g., lane-changing commands), while ramp metering is available via an infrastructure-based system or enabled by connected vehicles. The proposed approach is designed to robustly maximise the throughput at motorway bottlenecks employing a feedback controller, formulated as a Linear Quadratic Integral regulator, which is based on a simplified linear time invariant traffic flow model. We also present an extremum seeking algorithm to compute the optimal set-points used in the feedback controller, employing only the measurement of a cost that is representative of the achieved traffic conditions. The method is evaluated via simulation experiments, performed on a first-order, multi-lane, macroscopic traffic flow model, also featuring the capacity drop phenomenon, which allows to demonstrate the effectiveness of the developed methodology and to highlight the improvement in terms of the generated congestion. Connected vehicle (CV) technology is expected to bring additional opportunities to share, collect, and exploit various information on vehicles and their occupants. Assuming that CVs are able to transmit on‐board users and vehicle data, a user‐based signal timing optimisation (UBSTO) strategy is proposed, designed to optimise user throughput for signalised intersections. In the CV environment, the inputs of the proposed algorithm consist of position and speed of CVs, as well as the number of passengers travelling in each vehicle, while the output is the optimum green time duration for each signal phase. In addition, authors' proposed strategy is able to adapt the cycle length to the traffic volume condition. In case of missing users data, the same strategy can also operate in vehicle‐based mode, where the objective is vehicle‐throughput maximization. The performance of the proposed strategy is compared with a fully actuated controller (FAC) in microscopic simulation, for several scenarios, including different CV penetration rates. Authors' findings show that UBSTO can effectively increase user throughput and decrease average user delay in comparison with FAC, while also prioritising vehicles with higher number of users on‐board. The advent of vehicles’ connectivity and automation opens up unprecedented opportunities to make road transport more efficient and sustainable going far beyond what can be achieved by the vehicle’s intelligence alone, even in the presence of imperfect information of the surrounding traffic. This paper extends an existing linear quadratic model predictive control (LQMPC) approach to multi-destination traffic networks, where the correct origin–destination (OD) relations are preserved. In the literature, the LQMPC approach has been presented for efficient routing and intersection signal control. The optimization problem in the LQMPC has a linear quadratic formulation that can be solved quickly, which is beneficial for a real-time application. However, the existing LQMPC approach does not preserve OD relations and thus may send traffic to wrong destinations. This problem is tackled by a heuristic method presented is this paper. We present two macroscopic models: 1) a non-linear route-specific model which keeps track of traffic dynamics for each OD pair and 2) a linear model that aggregates all route traffic states, which can be embedded into the LQMPC framework. The route-specific model predicts traffic dynamics and provides information to the LQMPC before the optimization and evaluates the optimal solutions after the optimization. The information obtained from the route-specific model is formulated as constraints in the LQMPC to narrow the solution space and exclude unrealistic solutions that would lead to flows that are inconsistent with the OD relations. The extended LQMPC approach is tested in a synthetic network with multiple bottlenecks. We develop a predictor-based adaptive cruise control design with integral action (based on a nominal constant time-headway policy) for the compensation of large actuator and sensor delays in vehicular systems utilizing measurements of the relative spacing as well as of the speed and the short-term history of the desired acceleration of the ego vehicle. By employing an input–output approach, we show that the predictor-based adaptive cruise control law with integral action guarantees all of the four typical performance specifications of adaptive cruise control designs, namely, 1) stability, 2) zero steady-state spacing error, 3) string stability, and 4) non-negative impulse response, despite the large input delay. The development and deployment of simple, yet efficient, coordinated and integrated control tools for motorway traffic control remains a challenge. A generic integrated feedback-based motorway traffic flow control concept is proposed in this paper. It is based on the combination and suitable extension of control algorithms and tools proposed or deployed in other studies, such as ramp metering or variable speed limit (VSL)-enabled cascade-feedback mainstream traffic flow control, and allows for consideration of multiple bottlenecks. The new controller enables coordination of ramp metering actions at a series of on-ramps, as well as integration with VSL control actions, toward a common control goal, which is bottleneck throughput maximization. While doing this, the approach considers a pre-specified (desired) balancing of the incurred delays upstream of the employed actuators, via a suitably designed knapsack problem. Despite the multitude of the offered configurations, options, and possibilities, the generic control algorithm remains simple, efficient, and suitable for field implementation. Mainstream traffic flow control (MTFC) enabled via variable speed limits (VSLs) has been investigated in previous studies, utilizing various control strategies. In this paper, an extended feedback control strategy is proposed for MTFC enabled via VSLs, considering multiple-bottleneck locations. Feedback-based results are compared with optimal control results for the evaluation of the controller using a validated macroscopic model. The performance of the feedback controller is shown to approach the optimal control results, despite the fact that many practical and safety restrictions are additionally considered by the feedback controller. A risk-based approach to control dangerous goods (DG) transport flows by roads is proposed, solving a real-time flow assignment problem. The model takes into account the planned scheduling of the DG fleets. The objective is to readapt the schedule in real time, controlling the DG flow to minimize both the risk on the network and the gap between the proposed modified delivery and the planned one. The innovative aspect of the proposed approach is to balance the social objective of a national authority, thus minimizing the risk on the road infrastructures, with the economical objective of the DG distribution companies that have to minimize the actual time, as defined by the planned deliveries. The proposed DG transport model is defined according to a system of systems view. Each subsystem (SS) represents either a regional area or, more commonly, a segment of a road. The proposed approach provides a useful tool for evaluating the optimal speed for DG vehicles in each SS and the optimal amount of DG flow that should transit from one SS to another, following the planned delivery schedule. The problem has been tackled in two different formulations. First, a nonlinear mathematical programming formulation is defined. Then, according to simplifying assumptions, the problem is solved as a discrete-time finite horizon linear quadratic optimal control problem with a state feedback control. Agent-based modeling has the potential to deal with the ever-growing complexity of transport systems, including future disrupting mobility technologies and services, such as automated driving, Mobility as a Service, and micromobility. Although different software dedicated to the simulation of disaggregate travel demand have emerged, the amount of needed input data, in particular the characteristics of a synthetic population, is large and not commonly available, due to legit privacy concerns. In this paper, a methodology to spatially assign a synthetic population by exploiting only publicly available aggregate data is proposed, providing a systematic approach for an efficient treatment of the data needed for activity-based demand generation. The assignment of workplaces exploits aggregate statistics for economic activities and land use classifications to properly frame origins and destination dynamics. The methodology is validated in a case study for the city of Tallinn, Estonia, and the results show that, even with very limited data, the assignment produces reliable results up to a 500 × 500 m resolution, with an error at district level generally around 5%. Connected vehicles (CVs) have the potential to collect and share information that, if appropriately processed, can be employed for advanced traffic control strategies, rendering infrastructure-based sensing obsolete. However, before we reach a fully connected environment, where all vehicles are CVs, we have to deal with the challenge of incomplete data. In this paper, we develop data-driven methods for the estimation of vehicles approaching a signalised intersection, based on the availability of partial information stemming from an unknown penetration rate of CVs. In particular, we build machine learning models with the aim of capturing the nonlinear relations between the inputs (CV data) and the output (number of non-connected vehicles), which are characterised by highly complex interactions and may be affected by a large number of factors. We show that, in order to train these models, we may use data that can be easily collected with modern technologies. Moreover, we demonstrate that, if the available real data is not deemed sufficient, training can be performed using synthetic data, produced via microscopic simulations calibrated with real data, without a significant loss of performance. Numerical experiments, where the estimation methods are tested using real vehicle data simulating the presence of various penetration rates of CVs, show very good performance of the estimators, making them promising candidates for applications in the near future.
