14. Temperature-dependent thermal conductivity in silicon nanostructured materials studied by the Boltzmann transport equation

Abstract

Nanostructured materials exhibit low thermal conductivity because of theadditional scattering due to phonon-boundary interactions. As theseinteractions are highly sensitive to the mean free path (MFP) of a given phononmode, MFP distributions in nanostructures can be dramatically distortedrelative to bulk. Here we calculate the MFP distribution in periodic nanoporousSi for different temperatures, using the recently developed MFP-dependentBoltzmann Transport Equation. After analyzing the relative contribution of eachphonon branch to thermal transport in nanoporous Si, we find that at roomtemperature optical phonons contribute 18 % to heat transport, compared to 5%in bulk Si. Interestingly, we observe a steady thermal conductivity in thenanoporous materials over a temperature range 200 K < T < 300 K, which weattribute to the ballistic transport of acoustic phonons with long intrinsicMFP. These results, which are also consistent with a recent experimental study,shed light on the origin of the reduction of thermal conductivity innanostructured materials, and could contribute to multiscale heat transportengineering, in which the bulk material and geometry are optimizedconcurrently.

24. Yeast Starter Culture Identification to Produce of Red Wines with Enhanced Antioxidant Content.

Abstract

Grape variety, quality, geographic origins and phytopathology can influence the amount of polyphenols that accumulate in grape tissues. Polyphenols in wine not only shape their organoleptic characteristics but also significantly contribute to the positive impact that this beverage has on human health. However, during the winemaking process, the total polyphenol content is substantially reduced due to the adsorption onto yeast wall polymers and subsequent lees separation. Despite this, limited information is available regarding the influence of the yeast starter strain on the polyphenolic profile of wine. To address this issue, a population consisting of 136 Saccharomyces cerevisiae strains was analyzed to identify those with a diminished ability to adsorb polyphenols. Firstly, the reduction in concentration of polyphenolic compounds associated to each strain was studied by assaying Total Phenolic Content (TPC) and Trolox Equivalent Antioxidant Capacity (TEAC) in the wines produced by micro-scale must fermentation. A total of 29 strains exhibiting a TPC and TEAC reduction ≤ 50%, when compared to that detected in the utilized grape must were identified and the nine most-promising strains were further validated by larger-scale vinification. Physico-chemical analyses of the resulting wines led to the identification of four strains, namely ITEM6920, ITEM9500, ITEM9507 and ITEM9508 which showed, compared to the control wine, a TPC and TEAC reduction ≤ 20 in the produced wines. They were denoted by a significant (p < 0.05) increased amount of anthocyanin, quercetin and trans-coutaric acid, minimal volatile acidity (<0.2 g/L), absence of undesirable metabolites and a well-balanced volatile profile. As far as we know, this investigation represents the first clonal selection of yeast strains aimed at the identifying "functional" fermentation starters, thereby enabling the production of regional wines with enriched polyphenolic content. Abstract

In this study, we use transient thermal gratings—a non-contact, laser-based thermal metrology technique with intrinsically high accuracy—to investigate room-temperature phonon-mediated thermal transport in two nanoporous holey silicon membranes with limiting dimensions of 120 nm and 250 nm, respectively. We compare the experimental results with ab initio calculations of phonon-mediated thermal transport according to the phonon Boltzmann transport equation (BTE) using two different computational techniques. We find that the calculations conducted within the Casimir framework, i.e., based on the BTE with the bulk phonon dispersion and diffuse scattering from surfaces, are in quantitative agreement with the experimental data and thus conclude that this framework is adequate for describing phonon-mediated thermal transport in silicon nanostructures with feature sizes of the order of 100 nm. Abstract

Predicting nanoscale thermal transport in dielectrics requires models, such as the Boltzmann transport equation (BTE), that account for phonon boundary scattering in structures with complex geometries. Although the BTE has been validated against several key experiments, its computational expense limits its applicability. Here, we demonstrate the use of an analytic reduced-order model for predicting the thermal conductivity in dimensionally confined materials, i.e., monolithic and porous thin films, and rectangular and cylindrical nanowires. The approach uses the recently developed "Ballistic Correction Model," which accounts for materials' full distribution of phonon mean-free-paths. The model is validated against BTE simulations for a selection of base materials, obtaining excellent agreement. By furnishing a precise yet easy-to-use prediction of thermal transport in nanostructures, our work strives to accelerate the identification of materials for energy-conversion and thermal-management applications. Abstract

An important research target is improving the health benefits of traditional Mediterranean, durum wheat-based foods using innovative raw materials. In this study, we characterised wholemeal flours obtained from a traditional durum wheat cv. Svevo, two innovative durum wheat varieties (Svevo-High Amylose and Faridur), the naked barley cv. Chifaa and the elite lentil line 6002/ILWL118/1-1, evaluating them for targeted phytochemicals, untargeted metabolomics fingerprints and antioxidant capacity. To this aim, individual phenolic acids, flavonoids, tocochromanols and carotenoids were identified and quantified through HPLC-DAD, and the antioxidant capacities of both the extracts and whole meals were detected by ABTS assays. An untargeted metabolomics fingerprinting of the samples was conducted through NMR spectroscopy. Results showed that the innovative materials improved phytochemical profiles and antioxidant capacity compared to Svevo. In particular, Svevo-HA and Faridur had higher contents of ferulic and sinapic acids, β-tocotrienol and lutein. Moreover, Chifaa is a rich source of phenolic acids, β-tocopherols, lutein and zeaxanthin whereas lentil of flavonoids (i.e., catechin and procyanidin B2). The NMR profiles of Svevo-HA and Faridur showed a significant reduction of sugar content, malate and tryptophan compared to that of Svevo. Finally, substantial differences characterised the lentil profiles, especially for citrate, trigonelline and phenolic resonances of secondary metabolites, such as catechin-like compounds. Abstract

The lentil (Lens culinaris Medik.) is one of the major pulse crops cultivated worldwide. However, in the last decades, lentil cultivation has decreased in many areas surrounding Mediterranean countries due to low yields, new lifestyles, and changed eating habits. Thus, many landraces and local varieties have disappeared, while local farmers are the only custodians of the treasure of lentil genetic resources. Recently, the lentil has been rediscovered to meet the needs of more sustainable agriculture and food systems. Here, we proposed an image analysis approach that, besides being a rapid and non-destructive method, can characterize seed size grading and seed coat morphology. The results indicated that image analysis can give much more detailed and precise descriptions of grain size and shape characteristics than can be practically achieved by manual quality assessment. Lentil size measurements combined with seed coat descriptors and the color attributes of the grains allowed us to develop an algorithm that was able to identify 64 red lentil genotypes collected at ICARDA with an accuracy approaching 98% for seed size grading and close to 93% for the classification of seed coat morphology.
