BackgroundSince January 2020, COVID-19 has affected more than 100 million people in the U.S. Previous studies on racial and ethnic disparities related to characteristics and outcomes of COVID-19 patients have been insightful. However, appropriate epidemiologic age-standardization of the disease burden and disparities for hospitalization data are lacking.ObjectiveTo identify and describe racial and ethnic disparities for primary COVID-19 hospitalizations in the U.S. in 2020.MethodsIn this nationally representative observational study, we use the National Inpatient Sample to quantify racial and ethnic disparities in COVID-19 hospitalizations. Descriptive statistics for patient characteristics, common comorbidities, age-standardized hospitalization rates, inpatient complications, and mortality among COVID-19 hospitalizations were contrasted by race and ethnicity.ResultsThere were 1,058,815 primary COVID-19 hospitalizations in 2020. Of those, 47.2% were female, with median age of 66 (IQR, 54, 77). Overall inpatient mortality rate was 11.1%. When compared to White patients, Black, Hispanic, and Native American patients had higher age-standardized hospitalization rate ratios of 2.42 (95% CI 2.40-2.43), 2.26 (2.25-2.28), and 2.51 (2.46-2.56), respectively. Non-White patients had increased age-adjusted rates for procedures and complications. Factors associated with inpatient mortality include age, male sex, Hispanic or Native American race or ethnicity, lower income, Medicaid, heart failure, arrhythmias, coagulopathy, and chronic liver disease.ConclusionsMarginalized populations in the U.S. had over twice the COVID-19 hospitalization rate relative to White patients. Age-adjusted mortality rates were highest for Black, Hispanic, and Native American patients. Careful consideration for vulnerable populations is encouraged during highly communicable respiratory pandemics.

AIM: Urolithiasis is the most prevalent urinary tract disease, posing a global public health concern. The escalating prevalence and recurrence rates of urolithiasis are attributed to lifestyle modifications, such as reduced physical activity and dietary habits. This retrospective study aims to explore the risk factors associated with urolithiasis among individuals diagnosed with this condition. Method: A retrospective hospital-based study involving 60 participants meeting the inclusion criteria was conducted. The participants were selected through convenience sampling from the urology, nephrology, and medical wards at Saveetha Medical College and Hospital. Demographic variables were collected, and the risk factors were assessed using a checklist on one-to-one interviews. Results: The study unveiled that most participants (68%) were male. Eighty percent of participants had the risk factor of decreased water intake, 74% consumed excess tomatoes, 56% had a history of recurrent urinary tract infections, 64% consumed an excessive amount of salt daily, 72% experienced a decreased urine output, 53% had a habit of alcohol consumption, and 45% included milk and milk products in their daily diet. A small percentage (5%) had a family history of urolithiasis. Additionally, 6% were undergoing Siddha treatment. Conclusion: The findings from this study underscore the significant factors contributing to urolithiasis. They can inform public health campaigns to raise awareness about lifestyle modifications, dietary changes, and hydration protocols contributing to kidney stone formation.

Abstract Objective This study aimed to develop and validate a nomogram for assessing the risk of nosocomial infections among obstetric inpatients, providing a valuable reference for predicting and mitigating the risk of postpartum infections. Methods A retrospective observational study was performed on a cohort of 28,608 obstetric patients admitted for childbirth between 2017 and 2022. Data from the year 2022, comprising 4,153 inpatients, were utilized for model validation. Univariable and multivariable stepwise logistic regression analyses were employed to identify the factors influencing nosocomial infections among obstetric inpatients. A nomogram was subsequently developed based on the final predictive model. The receiver operating characteristic (ROC) curve was utilized to calculate the area under the curve (AUC) to evaluate the predictive accuracy of the nomogram in both the training and validation datasets. Results The gestational weeks > = 37, prenatal anemia, prenatal hypoproteinemia, premature rupture of membranes (PROM), cesarean sction, operative delivery, adverse birth outcomes, length of hospitalization (days) > 5, CVC use and catheterization of ureter were included in the ultimate prediction model. The AUC of the nomogram was 0.828 (0.823, 0.833) in the training dataset and 0.855 (0.844, 0.865) in the validation dataset. Conclusion Through a large-scale retrospective study conducted in China, we developed and independently validated a nomogram to enable personalized postpartum infections risk estimates for obstetric inpatients. Its clinical application can facilitate early identification of high-risk groups, enabling timely infection prevention and control measures.

The clinical data were collected for the enrolled patients. Progression-free survival (PFS), overall survival (OS), and adverse events were analyzed.Results: A total of 174 patients with HCC were enrolled. The median PFS was 11.1 (95% confidence interval [CI]: 8.1− 14.0) months for patients who took aspirin and 8.6 (95% CI: 5.5− 11.8) months for patients who did not take aspirin. The median OS of patients in the aspirin group was 76.7 (95% CI: 58.1− 95.3) months and that in the non-aspirin group was 53.5 (95% CI: 42.7− 64.3) months. In patients with non-viral HCC, OS was significantly better for the aspirin group (P = 0.03) after ablation. The PFS of patients who underwent ablation alone in the aspirin group was obviously superior to that of patients in the non-aspirin group (P = 0.002). Stratified Cox regression analysis demonstrated that aspirin use after ablation might be a protective factor in specific HCC patient subgroups. The incidence of major adverse events did not significantly differ between the two groups.Conclusion: Low-dose aspirin use was associated with better OS in patients with non-viral HCC after thermal ablation. In patients who received thermal ablation alone, the administration of low-dose aspirin could improve PFS.
