Melatonin, the primary hormone secreted by the pineal gland, regulates central and peripheral oscillators and adapts the internal environment to the external one through MT1 and MT2 receptors. The authors present a case of 16-year-old male intentionally overdosed on 900mg of melatonin (180 tablets) and 10 tablets of 0.5mg alprazolam. Admitted to the emergency department, he was extremely drowsy and minimally responsive with a Glasgow coma scale score of 8/15. Vital signs were stable, and no renal or liver dysfunction was noted. Elevated total leucocyte count and positive benzodiazepine urine test were observed. Gastric lavage was performed, and toxicology reports showed blood alprazolam levels at 0.15 mg/litre eight hours post-overdose. The patient regained consciousness 32 hours post-ingestion and was transferred to the psychiatry unit. This case underscores the increasing abuse of melatonin due to its easy availability and lack of regulation. Although melatonin has a low toxicity potential, side effects and interactions with other drugs can be severe. Supportive measures and vital sign control are crucial in overdose treatment.

Introduction: Sexual functioning has remained widely neglected aspect of patient care for those suffering from severe mental disorders and has received little attention. Yet, it has been construed as one of the major factors contributing to non-adherence with antipsychotic medications. Aim: To study sexual dysfunction in patients with psychotic disorders and its clinical association with serum prolactin levels. Materials and Methods: This case-control study was conducted in the Department of Psychiatry at MGM Medical College and associated Mental Hospital, Indore, Madhya Pradesh, India, from 13th February 2020 to 21st January 2021. In order to promote the potential health benefits of high fibre products, wheat bran is the main focus of the food industry. The physiochemical and in vitro digestion properties of wheat bran containing different particle size were investigated and compared against raw bran samples. Firstly, the bran sample containing superfine particles (11.63 μm) was hydrolyzed by the α‐amylase, pepsin, and pancreatin enzymes separately using a single factor and orthogonal test. Secondly, optimized hydrolysis parameters of superfine particles were employed to measure in vitro digestibility of macronutrients in raw, coarse, medium, and superfine bran particles. The maximum degree of hydrolysis obtained via α‐Amylase (concentration 10 mg mL−1, pH 6.6, and time 12.5 min) was 55.71%; pepsin (concentration 50 mg mL−1, pH 1.2, and time 9 h) was 82.10%; and pancreatin (concentration 100 mg mL−1, pH 7.0 and time 12 h) was 84.71%, respectively. The highest in vitro digestibility rate of reducing sugar, protein, fat, and soluble fibre content was observed in superfine bran samples to 33.4%, 82.55%, 91.53%, and 21.66%, respectively. Wheat bran (WB) is an abundant source of fiber, promoting the health for constipation, irritable bowel syndrome, and gastrointestinal disorders. However, the role of superfine-WB in improving the obesity, hyperglycemia, and hyperlipidemia needs to be revealed. The superfine-WB (low and high treatments) was studied on body-weight, blood sugar, serum, and liver lipids in a high-fat rat model for 5-weeks. The high-fat diet substantially increased body-weight, sugar levels, lipids, and malondialdehyde in serum and liver. In contrast, the superfine-WB treatments reduced food and energy intake, postprandial glucose, body-weight, blood and liver cholesterol, triglycerides, malondialdehyde, low-density lipoprotein, and increased the level of high-density lipoprotein. Additionally, when the two different concentrations were compared, the maximum impact was exhibited by the superfine-WB containing high concentration.
