A 3D-printing approach is used to fabricate green bodies/precursor microarchitectures that, upon annealing, allow the fabrication of hierarchical 3D hollow microarchitectures (3DHMs). The 3DHMs are composed mainly of TiO 2 and inorganic stabilizers that enable the production of inorganic cellular units upon thermal annealing at 650 °C. Morphological inspection reveals that the 3D architecture beams comprise TiO 2 nanoparticles (NPs). The inner and outer diameters of the hollow beams are ∼80 μm and ∼150 μm, retained throughout the 3D hollow network. A proof-of-concept photo-Fenton reaction is assessed. The 3DHMs are impregnated with α-Fe 2 O 3 NPs to evaluate solar photo-Fenton degradation of organic compounds, such as MB used as control and acetaminophen, an organic pollutant. The optical, structural, and chemical environment characteristics, alongside scavenger analysis, generate insights into the proposed solar photo-Fenton degradation reaction over TiO 2 3DHMs loaded with α-Fe 2 O 3 . The electrochemical synthesis of α ${\alpha }$ -amino acids at room temperature and pressure is a sustainable alternative to conventional methods like microbial fermentation and Strecker synthesis. A custom-built zero-gap flow electrolyzer was used to study the electrosynthesis of alanine via the electrocatalytic reductive amination (ERA) of the corresponding biomass-derivable α ${\alpha }$ -keto acid precursor - pyruvic acid (PA), and hydroxylamine (NH 2 OH) at very low pH. Non-toxic, abundant, and easy to prepare TiO 2 /Ti electrocatalysts were utilized as the cathode. Three TiO 2 /Ti felt electrodes with different oxide thicknesses were prepared and their characterization results were correlated with their respective electrochemical performance in terms of Faradaic efficiency η ${\eta }$ , and partial current density j ‾ ${\left|\overline{j}\right|}$ . Cyclic voltammetry indicated a different electrocatalytic reduction process on hydrothermally treated electrodes, compared to thermally oxidized ones. Hydrothermally treated electrodes were also found to have the thickest porous anatase layer and achieved 50-75 % alanine conversion efficiencies. Optimization showed that the cell potential, reactant flow rate and the PA: NH 2 OH ratio were crucial parameters in determining the conversion efficiency. η ${\eta }$ and j ‾ ${\left|\overline{j}\right|}$ were found to significantly decrease when an excess of is used and, an optimal alanine η ${\eta }$ of 75 % was achieved at 2.0 V applied cell potential and 10 mL/h reactant flow rate., (© 2024 The Authors. Photocatalytic degradation of p-Cresol was evaluated using the mixed oxide Bi 2 O 3 /TiO 2 (containing 2 and 20% wt. Bi 2 O 3 referred as TB2 and TB20) and was compared with bare TiO 2 under simulated solar radiation. Materials were prepared by the classic sol-gel method. All solids exhibited the anatase phase by X-ray diffraction (XRD) and Raman spectroscopy. The synthesized materials presented lower crystallite size and Eg value, and also higher surface area as Bi 2 O 3 amount was increased. Bi content was quantified showing near to 70% of theoretical values in TB2 and TB20. Bi 2 O 3 incorporation also was demonstrated by X-ray photoelectron spectroscopy (XPS). Characterization of mixed oxides suggests a homogeneous distribution of Bi 2 O 3 on TiO 2 surface. Photocatalytic tests were carried out using a catalyst loading of 1 g L -1 under simulated solar light and visible light. The incorporation of Bi 2 O 3 in TiO 2 improved the photocatalytic properties of the synthesized materials obtaining better results with TB20 than the unmodified TiO 2 under both radiation sources.

In this study, the solar photocatalytic activity (SPA) of WO3/TiO2 photocatalysts synthesized by the sol-gel method with two different percentages of WO3 (2 and 5%wt) was evaluated using malathion as a model contaminant. For comparative purpose bare TiO2 was also prepared by sol-gel process. The powders were characterized by X-ray diffraction (XRD), Raman spectroscopy, diffuse reflectance UV-vis spectroscopy (DRUV-vis), specific surface area by the BET method (SSABET), scanning electron microscopy (SEM), high resolution transmission electron microscopy (HRTEM) and scanning transmission electron microscopy with a high annular angle dark field detector (STEM-HAADF). The XRD, Raman, HRTEM and STEM-HAADF analyses indicated that WO3 was present as a monoclinic crystalline phase with nanometric cluster sizes (1.1 ± 0.1 nm for 2% WO3/TiO2 and 1.35 ± 0.3 nm for 5% WO3/TiO2) and uniformly dispersed on the surface of TiO2. The particle size of the materials was 19.4 ± 3.3 nm and 25.6 ± 3 nm for 2% and 5% WO3/TiO2, respectively. The SPA was evaluated on the degradation of commercial malathion pesticide using natural solar light. The 2% WO3/TiO2 photocatalyst exhibited the best photocatalytic activity achieving 76% of total organic carbon (TOC) abatement after 300 min compared to the 5% WO3/TiO2 and bare TiO2 photocatalysts, which achieved 28 and 47% mineralization, respectively. Finally, experiments were performed to assess 2% WO3/TiO2 catalyst activity on repeated uses; after several successive cycles its photocatalytic activity was retained showing long-term stability., (Copyright © 2013 Elsevier B.V. Organic contaminants (organochlorine [OC], organophosphorus [OP] pesticides and polychlorinated biphenyls [PCBs]), and metals (As, Cd, Hg, Pb, and Se) are a concern to avian health in the Colorado River delta, Mexico. We determined concentrations of contaminants in eggs of three breeding species of birds from the delta (mourning doves [Zenaida macroura], burrowing owls [Athene cunicularia], and marsh wrens [Cistothorus palustris]). We collected 27 eggs of mourning doves, eight eggs of burrowing owls, and 18 eggs of marsh wrens for analyses. Polychlorinated biphenyls, OC, and OP pesticides were analyzed by gas chromatography equipped with an electron capture detector, and metals were analyzed by inductively coupled plasma mass spectrometry. The non-ortho PCB congeners (PCB 77 and 126) were found in mourning dove and burrowing owl eggs at concentrations in which hatchability can be affected. Mean selenium concentration found in marsh wren eggs (5.6 microg/g dry wt) exceeded the level of concern. Arsenic and Cd were found at higher than normal concentrations, Hg concentrations did not exceed the level of concern in any of the species, and Pb concentrations were higher in eggs of species subject to hunting. With the exception of lead, marsh wren eggs contained the highest metal concentrations.
