15. Effect of heat and film thickness on a photoinduced phase transition in azobenzene liquid crystalline polyesters.

Abstract

The liquid crystal to isotropic phase transition induced with 488 nm light in films of liquid crystalline azobenzene polyesters has been studied as a function of temperature, light intensity, and film thickness. That phase transition is associated with the photoinduced trans-cis-trans isomerizations of azobenzene molecules and it has been found that the 488 nm light power needed to induce the transition to the isotropic state increases when the film thickness decreases. The irradiation with the laser beam heats the film up and this seems to be responsible for the observed thickness dependence. Optical absorption measurements show that azobenzene aggregates present in one of the polymers are broken down in the photoinduced phase transition. The birefringence induced with low power 488 nm light in films before and after undergoing that photoinduced phase transition has also been studied. Birefringence shows a faster growing rate in films which have undergone the transition. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Objective To evaluate the regenerative capacity of non-supplemented and bioactive patches made of decellularized porcine cardiac extracellular matrix (pcECM) and characterize the biological key factors involved in possible cardiac function (CF) restoration following acute and 8 weeks chronic MI. Background pcECM is a key natural biomaterial that can affect cardiac regeneration following myocardial infarction (MI), through mechanisms, which are still not clearly understood. Methods Wistar rats underwent MI and received pcECM patch (pcECM-P) treatment in either acute or chronic inflammatory phases. Treated, sham operated (no MI), and control (MI without treatment) animals, were compared through echocardiography, hemodynamics, pathological evaluation and analyses of various mRNA and protein level markers. Results Our results show that in both acute and long-term chronic MI models, pcECM promotes significant cardiac function improvement, which is correlated to progenitor (GATA4 + , c-kit + ) and myocyte (MYLC + , TRPI + ) recruitment. Interestingly, recruited progenitors, isolated using laser capture microdissection (LCM), expressed both early and late cardiomyocyte (CM) differentiation markers, suggesting differentiation towards the CM lineage. Recruited CM-like cells organized in a partially striated and immature muscle fiber arrangement that presented connexin43 —a crucial mediator of cardiac electrical conductivity. Concomitantly, pcECM was rapidly vascularized, and induced a constructive remodeling process as indicated by increased M2/M1 macrophage phenotypic ratio and pathological evaluation. Conclusions Acellular pcECM patch implants alone, i.e., without added biologics, are bioactive, and exert potent efficacy, stimulating biological regenerative processes that cooperatively lead to a cardiac progenitor-based restoration of function , even after scar tissue had already formed. Statement of Significance MI (‘heart attack’) remains the leading cause of heart failure and death in developed-countries. Restoration of cardiac function requires active turnover of damaged heart contracting cells (CM), however, CM endogenous regeneration is not efficient and is a matter of controversy. We show that a bioactive biomaterial alone—decellularized heart tissue (pcECM)—without added cells or growth factors, can elicit a complex regenerative response even after irreversible scarring. The pcECM patch induces macrophage polarization towards constructive remodeling and cardiomyocyte progenitor cell (GATA4 + , c-kit + ) recruitment (evidenced at both mRNA and protein levels) resulting in de novo immature striated-like muscle patterns (MLC + , TrpI + , connexin43 + ). Abstract

It is well known that irradiation of azobenzene polymer films between 490 and 530 nm results in alignment of molecules perpendicular to the polarization of the incident beam. I have recently found that irradiation of amorphous azobenzene polymers with linearly polarized light at wavelengths between 560 and 630 nm, where the absorption is minimal, results in a possible uniaxial hedgehog arrangement of the molecules. Experiments performed with a dye laser, which can be tuned continuously between 560 and 630 nm, are described. Not only azobenzene but also another photosensitive molecule, bacteriorhodopsin, seems to exhibit this behavior. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Abstract

Ten Nε-glycylornithineamide derivatives have been synthesized containing various Nα-linked pyrimidine-1-ylacetyl groups which can undergo (2π + 2π) photodimerization on irradiation with UV light at 254 nm. The dimerization efficiency of the free and bound pyrimidine groups was compared in aqueous solution: it was dependent on the substitution of the pyrimidine ring. Nα, Nα′-bis-(uracil-1-ylacetyl)-( Nε-glycylornithineamide) and Nα, Nα′-bis-(5-bromouracil-1-ylacetyl)-( Nε-glycylornithineamide) were identified as possible candidates for optical data storage. Abstract

We have developed peptide materials with chromophores that undergo cycloaddition, suitable for terabit optical digital storage in a 5.25 in. disc. The rationale behind this design is that the length and rigidity of the backbone can be adjusted to facilitate the formation of a photodimer without large physical movements of the chromophores on exposure to UV light. Initially strongly absorbing films transmit up to 50% of light on irradiation at dimerizing wavelengths. This property can be utilized to record grey levels. Abstract

High diffraction efficiencies have been achieved with polarization gratings recorded in thin films of an azobenzene side-chain liquid crystalline polyester by means of biphotonic processes. Efficiency values up to 30% have been reached after an induction period of 300 s and subsequent evolution with the sample in darkness. These values are at least two orders of magnitude higher than those previously reported for biphotonic recording. The gratings can be erased with unpolarized blue light and partial recovery of the diffraction efficiency has been observed after the erasure process when the sample is kept in darkness. Abstract

Biphotonic holographic gratings have been recorded in a side-chain azobenzene liquid crystalline polyester using a blue incoherent source and a He-Ne laser. Intensity gratings and the appearance of surface relief have been observed when two linearly polarized beams from a He-Ne laser are made to interfere on a film illuminated with blue light. Polarized holographic gratings are also created with two orthogonally circularly polarized He-Ne beams. Abstract

We report here a light-induced phenomenon--a self-induced rotation of the azimuth of elliptically polarized light passing through photobirefringent azopolymers. The experiments are carried out with films of amorphous and liquid-crystalline polymers. It has been shown that the induced rotation angle depends on the ellipticity of the input light.
