Theoretical background: The article examines the microeconomic and macroeconomic determinants of credit risk in the European Union countries divided into two groups: countries that own the euro and countries outside the euro area. Purpose of the article: This study is to identify differences in the shaping of credit risk in the EU depending on the country's affiliation to the monetary union. Research methods: The statistical survey made it possible to identify significant differences between the mean values of the analyzed variables, and the econometric survey made it possible to identify differences in the determinants of credit risk in the two analyzed groups of countries. The study consisted of examining the occurrence of differences between the means for the collected variables and making the models using the GMM system. Main findings: Differences in the influence of macroeconomic factors on the credit risk of euro area countries and other European Union countries were shown. The main difference concerns the insensitivity of credit risk of euro area countries to changes in the foreign currency exchange rate, as well as the significant impact of inflation and unemployment on the credit risk of these countries.

This paper deals with the phenomenon of excessive optimism in brokerage valuations, which is manifested by one-sided errors in the valuation of securities in reference to the real price achieved by the particular stock in the horizon of one year. The phenomenon of over-optimism is complex both from the perspective of the individual characteristics of stock market analysts as well as the psychological aspects of market functioning and the mechanisms that determine the volatility of stock prices. Due to the wide range of factors affecting the occurrence of the examined phenomenon, the authors focus only on the market aspects influencing the occurrence of excessive optimism in brokerage recommendations. The research examines over 10,000 recommendations for companies from the Warsaw Stock Exchange and from more than 40 financial institutions which evaluated companies in the period 2000-2014. For the purposes of analyzes, over-optimism in valuations is defined as an overestimation of the target price in the case of positive recommendations and as an underestimation of the price decline in the case of negative ones. The results confirmed the hypotheses of the heterogeneity of the phenomenon of excessive optimism both for different economic sectors and individual financial institutions. The authors see it as a good result considering the fact that regression uses only variables related to market characteristics of the recommendations issued, omitting other spheres influencing the occurrence of excessive optimism among analysts.

Special Economic Zones (SEZ) are economic enclaves, created by the state in order to attract domestic and foreign investors, so as to stimulate economic growth in the region. One of the models related to SEZ presenting the way of measuring the effectiveness of their impact on the surrounding economy is P. Warr’s enclave model (1983). The main purpose of the article is to verify the assumptions made in the original Warr model and adapt it to the economic conditions in transforming economy. Poland was chosen for the research because of excessive network of SEZs which influence Polish economy locally and create national and international economic relations. As a result of analysis of the effectiveness of SEZs in Poland, we conclude that the impact of SEZs on Polish economy is positive and additionally they are the source of value added for the market.

Farming is treated as one of the riskiest businesses. Political decisions, especially these related to the agricultural sector, may be treated as of a great importance. As a consequence, farm owners seek to diversify their sources of income and run other strategies aiming to stabilize their earnings i.e. by off-farm activities. The paper selected key groups of the determinants of the off-farm income with the aim to evaluate the current state and to propose further steps of the detailed analysis. The authors identified the mechanisms how the particular instruments influence farmers' decisions on generating the off-farm income. It may be concluded that the significance of direct payments is still very high. Subsidies generally discourage farmers from the non-agriculture employment. The influence of socio-demographic characteristics is significant, however, the strength of this impact is determined by the additional factors like the situation in the labour market. In case of environmental determinants, it should be noted that there is a limited group of factors that may be out of control by the farm operators. The value added of the article is an attempt to identify the mechanisms how the particular instruments may influence farmers' decisions on generating the off-farm income. The article finishes with the authors' recommendations for further empirical studies.

Niniejszy raport prezentuje wyniki projektu realizowanego w ramach projektu badawczego nr UMO-2013/09/B/HS4/, pt. Efektywność Specjalnych Stref Ekonomicznych, przez zespół Katedry Finansów Korporacji, Wydział Ekonomiczno-Socjologiczny Uniwersytetu Łódzkiego, pod kierownictwem dr hab. Radosława Pastusiaka, prof. nadzw. UŁ. w składzie: dr Magdalena Jasiniak, mgr Jakub Keller, mgr Bartłomiej Krzeczewski. Zasadniczym celem badania było określenie efektywności funkcjonowania Specjalnych Stref Ekonomicznych w Polsce (SSE). SSE poprzez działalność przedsiębiorstw, które ulokowały w nich swoje inwestycje oddziałują na otoczenie społeczne i gospodarcze. Projekt miał za zadanie oszacować ten wpływ na gospodarkę regionalną oraz krajową. W ramach projektu została zbadana rola społeczna i gospodarcza przedsiębiorstw zlokalizowanych na terenie SSE w Polsce.

This paper investigates the companies listed on WSE in the context of intangibles and financial management. If a company decides to build its strategy on innovation, it will have to manage the finances according to some rules specific for innovation based entities. The value of a company should grow as a result of joint decisions in the field of innovation and finances. Specifically, this paper investigates the influence of company’s intangibles on its liquidity strategy, cash management, profitability, debt capacity and market value. As a result of analysis it has been found that there exist relationships among those factors, indicating that innovation based strategy should be supported by financial decisions that enable the company to increase its value.

Celem artykułu jest analiza zależności płynności przedsiębiorstwa a jego rentowności. Płynność przedsiębiorstwa reprezentowana jest przez współczynnik bieżącej płynności oraz współczynnik płynności szybki. Natomiast rentowność reprezentowana jest przez współczynnik ROE i ROA. Dla realizacji celu postawiono hipotezę mówiącą, że zależność pomiędzy płynnością a rentownością w wybranej grupie przedsiębiorstw ma charakter nieliniowy. Przeprowadzona analiza została wykona na próbie zawierającej 3278 obserwacji pochodzących z 419 przedsiębiorstw funkcjonujących w warunkach rynku polskiego. Poprzez jedną obserwację autorzy rozumieją zestaw pięciu zmiennych w postaci: wskaźnika płynności bieżącej, wskaźnika płynności szybkiej, ROA, ROE oraz wielkości kapitału pracującego w przedsiębiorstwie w danym roku kalendarzowym. Pozyskana próba badawcza obejmuje lata 2002 do 2013, lecz ze względu na niekompletność dostępnych danych dla wszystkich lat we wszystkich analizowanych spółkach, liczba danych pozyskanych dla każdego przedsiębiorstwa nie jest jednakowa. W celu dokonania dokładniejszej analizy w dalszej części badania dokonano szeregu estymacji ekonometrycznych, z których wybrano trzy najlepiej obrazujące postawione problemy badawcze oraz najpoprawniejsze pod kątem statystycznym. Analizując współczynniki znajdujące się przy poszczególnych zmiennych widzimy, iż ponownie płynność niejednoznacznie wpływa na zyskowność przedsiębiorstwa.

W publikacji przyjęto hipotezę stwierdzającą, że inwestorzy wykazujący wysoką pewność siebie osiągają ponadprzeciętne wyniki inwestycyjne i najczęściej są mężczyznami. Jej potwierdzenie lub zaprzeczenie wiąże się z ważnym nurtem badawczym w finansach behawioralnych, poświęconym wpływom indywidualnych cech człowieka na efektywność inwestycji na rynku kapitałowym. W dotychczasowych badaniach, uzyskiwane wyniki były bardzo niejednorodne, analiza portfeli inwestycyjnych względem płci wskazywała na unikanie ryzyka przez kobiety a badanie ankietowe preferencji ryzyka nie potwierdzały tego. W artykule zaprezentowano wyniki eksperymentu behawioralnego, zaprojektowanego właśnie w celu potwierdzenia wpływu pewności siebie na wartość inwestycji na giełdzie. Uzyskane rezultaty nie wskazują na to aby pewność siebie miała wpływ na osiąganą efektywność na giełdzie, a także nie ma widocznej zależności pomiędzy pewnością siebie a płcią.

This paper relates to the initial public offering problem and companies' profitability levels before and after this event. In the presented study, profitability ratios in the year before initial public offering increase over the previous year, and then, after the IPO, fall. This confirms the phenomenon of distorting the level of profit before the IPO and partially equity dilution after the IPO. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
