Thin-film piezoelectrics are widely investigated for actuators and energy harvesters, but there are few alternatives to toxic lead zirconate titanate. Biocompatible Ca- and Zr-modified BaTiO3 (BCZT) is one of the most promising lead-free alternatives due to its high piezoelectric response. However, the dielectric/piezoelectric properties and structural integrity of BCZT films, which are crucial for their applications, are strongly influenced by the substrate upon which the film is grown and the related processing methods. Here, the in-plane stress, microstructure, dielectric, and piezoelectric properties of 100–500 nm thick high-temperature RF-sputtered BCZT films on industrially relevant Si-based substrates were investigated. Obtaining polycrystalline piezoelectric films required deposition temperatures ≥ 700 °C, but this induced tensile stresses of over 1500 MPa, which caused cracking in all films thicker than 200 nm. This degraded the dielectric, piezoelectric, and ferroelectric properties of films with larger electrode areas for applications. Films on SrTiO3, on the other hand, had a compressive residual stress, with fewer defects and no cracks. The grain size and surface roughness increased with increasing deposition temperature. These findings highlight the challenges in processing BCZT films and their crucial role in advancing lead-free piezoelectric technologies for actual device applications. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

In this work we demonstrate by transmission electron microscopy and piezoresponse force spectroscopy that the polarization direction in hydrothermally synthesized lead titanate (PbTiO3) nanorods can be changed from parallel to the nanorod axis to perpendicular to it by a simple heat treatment above the Curie temperature. The heat treatment also introduced 90° domains, caused a rearrangement of the surface and a reduction in the amounts of defects. The polarization of the heat-treated nanorods could be successively switched in the direction perpendicular to the nanorod axis. This control of the polarization in PbTiO3 nanorods opens up possibilities of tailoring the ferroelectric properties and is therefore highly relevant for the use of ferroelectric nanorods in devices. The transport of protonic charge carriers along and within the pore surfaces of porous oxide matrices is of significant importance for many catalytic and electrochemical applications, with porous TiO2 being a candidate material both for photocatalytic applications and as an electronically conducting support for polymer-based electrochemical cells. This work investigates the effect of acceptor (Cr and Fe) and donor (Nb) doping on protonic surface conduction in porous TiO2 over a wide range of relative humidity, temperature and oxygen activity. Generally, we find that acceptor dopants on the surface counteract dissociation and reduce the mobility of protons, while donor dopants give rise to enhanced dissociation making protonic surface conduction the highest for donor-doped samples, contrary to conventional bulk proton conductors. Moreover, protonic surface conduction in Cr-doped TiO2 is significantly higher under oxidising conditions compared to reducing conditions, which we relate to the presence of a higher valent species such as Cr6+ on the surface under oxidising conditions, again emphasising that protonic surface conduction increases with higher-valent (donor) and more acidic cations present on the surface. Physical restraint is used as a last resort emergency measure to calm and safeguard agitated and/or aggressive psychiatric patients. This can sometimes cause injuries, and rare fatalities have occurred. One mechanism of injury and death while in physical restraint is that of severe asphyxiation. We present the case of a hospitalized man in his mid-30s, suffering from schizophrenia. The patient was obese. He became aggressive and had to be manually restrained with a 'takedown.' After having been put in the prone position on the floor with a significant weight load on his body, he lost respiration and consciousness. Subsequently, he was given CPR. He regained consciousness and respiration, while the cyanosis receded in 1-2 min. Psychiatrists and pathologists should be aware that physically restraining a patient in the prone position with a significant weight load on the torso can, in rare cases, lead to asphyxiation. This work was an investigation of the effect of nanoparticles on the durability of wood specimens exposed to artificial weathering. TiO2 and clay nanoparticles were mixed with preservative (Wolmanit CX-8) for improving the durability of Norway spruce (Picea abies). Impregnated and untreated specimens were subjected to Atlas Solar Simulator accelerated ageing test chamber for solar radiation and water spray exposure. The effectiveness of the treatment against colour and chemical changes was investigated using CIEL*a*b* colour measurements system and Fourier transform infrared analysis. The present study showed that the wood specimens that had been treated with preservatives containing nanoparticles were slightly more stable against artificial ageing than both untreated specimens and specimens treated with preservative alone. Abstract: La0.58Sr0.4Co0.2Fe0.8O3−δ (LSCF) cathodes have been deposited on proton-conducting BaCe0.2Zr0.7Y0.1O3−δ (BCZY27) electrolyte and studied in symmetric cells to investigate the cathode microstructure and electrochemical performance. Three different types of cathodes have been prepared: two prepared from a solution, infiltrated into a screen-printed BZCY27 porous backbone (4 and 12 infiltrations), and one prepared by spray pyrolysis onto a polished electrolyte. In all three cases, LSCF is obtained after annealing at 700°C for 2h. Analysis of the electrochemical impedance spectra between 450°C and 600°C in air, with varying p(H2O), reveals that the charge transfer contribution is the lowest for the backbone-infiltrated cathode while the oxygen dissociation/adsorption contribution is the lowest for the spray-pyrolyzed cathode. The area specific resistances increase with the water vapor pressure. The area specific resistances obtained are 0.61Ωcm2 and 0.89Ωcm2 at 600°C for the spray-pyrolyzed LSCF cell in dry and humidified air, respectively; the corresponding resistances are 0.63Ωcm2 and 0.98Ωcm2 for the 12 times infiltrated LSCF cell. These resistances are the lowest reported for LSCF cathodes on Ba(Ce,Zr)O3-based electrolytes and show the promise of low-temperature fabrication methods for these systems. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

Arrays of ferroelectric lead titanate (PbTiO(3)) nanorods have been grown on a substrate by a novel template-free method. Hydrothermal treatment of an amorphous PbTiO(3) precursor in the presence of a surfactant and PbTiO(3) or SrTiO(3) substrates resulted in the growth of PbTiO(3) nanorod arrays aligned perpendicular to the substrate surface. Two steps in the growth mechanism were demonstrated: first an epitaxial layer was formed on the substrate; this was followed by self-assembly of nanocrystals forming a mesocrystal layer which matured into arrays of PbTiO(3) nanorods.

A molten salt synthesis route, previously reported to yield BaTiO3, PbTiO3, and Na2Ti6O13 nanorods, has been re-examined to elucidate the role of volatile chlorides. A precursor mixture containing barium (or lead) and titanium was annealed in the presence of NaCl at 760 or 820 degrees C. The main products were respectively isometric nanocrystalline BaTiO3 and PbTiO3. Nanorods were also detected, but electron diffraction revealed that the composition of the nanorods was respectively BaTi2O5/BaTi5O11 and Na2Ti6O13 for the two different systems, in contradiction to the previous studies. It was shown that NaCl reacted with BaO (PbO) resulting in loss of volatile BaCl2 (PbCl2) and formation and preferential growth of titanium oxide-rich nanorods instead of the target phase BaTiO3 (or PbTiO3). The molten salt synthesis route may therefore not necessarily yield nanorods of the target ternary oxide as reported previously. In addition, the importance of NaCl(g) for the growth of nanorods below the melting point of NaCl was demonstrated in a special experimental setup, where NaCl and the precursors were physically separated.
