This dataset provides the latest characterization factors for ozone depletion based on the most recent ozone depletion potentials from the 2022 World Meteorological Organization (WMO) scientific assessment. These characterization factors can be used in life cycle assessment (LCA) to convert emissions of ozone-depleting substances to the common unit of the ozone depletion impact category, measured in kg CFC-11-eq. The dataset is formatted for easy import into LCA software such as Brightway, the Activity Browser, and SimaPro. The characterization factors are provided for both 100-year and infinite time horizons. The dataset addresses the current limitations of life cycle impact assessment (LCIA) methods, which are outdated and lack comprehensive substance coverage, by including 318 substances reported in the latest WMO assessment. This update ensures relevance for current ozone depletion assessment, including substances banned but still in use, very short-lived substances, and N 2 O. The methodology for updating and converting characterization factors is provided, supporting future updates in line with new scientific assessments. In the recent years, packaging made of conventional plastics has been increasingly replaced by materials believed to be more sustainable. However, perceived sustainability must align with scientific assessments, such as life cycle assessments (LCAs). This review analysed 53 peer-reviewed studies published in the time range 2019-2023, aiming at understanding the state of the art in LCA about the environmental impacts of packaging by focusing on the comparison between plastics and alternative materials. The literature showed that consumer perceptions often differ from LCA findings and revealed that, frequently, conventional plastics are not the least environmentally friendly choice. Bioplastics typically show benefits only in the climate change and the fossil resource depletion impact categories. The heavy weight of glass turns out to affect its environmental performances with respect to the light plastics, with reuse being an essential strategy to lower the burdens. The comparison between plastics and metals is more balanced, leaning more towards plastics for food packaging. Similarly, paper resulted often preferable than plastics. Finally, for the other materials (i.e. wood and textiles), the picture is variable. To be competitive with plastics, the alternative materials require improvements like the optimisation of their production processes, their reuse and enhanced end-of-life options. Road transport significantly contributes to climate change and air pollution. Efforts to reduce transport sector emissions include deploying battery electric vehicles and designing their powertrains for improved performance. The European H2020 funded Functionally Integrated E-axle Ready for Mass Market Third GENeration Electric Vehicles (FITGEN) developed a novel functionally integrated e-axle (the FITGEN e-axle) for electric vehicles. This paper presents the environmental performance of the FITGEN e-axle. Using the Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) methodology, the study compares the FITGEN e-axle to the 2018 State-of-the-Art (SotA) e-drive, besides diesel and petrol-fuelled powertrains. The FITGEN powertrain reduces climate impacts by 10 % and energy consumption by 17 %, compared with the 2018 SotA e-drive due to the efficiency improvements and components integration. It also outperforms the 2018 SotA e-drive in several other impact categories, such as human toxicity (4-10 %), land use (19 %), and mineral depletion (8 %). However, the FITGEN powertrain only outperforms diesel and petrol powertrains in climate change and fossil resource scarcity impact categories. These findings imply that more efforts are required to improve the environmental profile of electric powertrains. Metal mining and production, especially for copper and aluminium, are critical for toxicity impacts. The sensitivity analysis demonstrates the robustness of the results, with no significant shift in their ranking order. Conventional cognitive assessment is based on a pencil-and-paper neuropsychological evaluation, which is time consuming, expensive and requires the involvement of several professionals. Information and communication technology could be exploited to allow the development of tools that are easy to use, reduce the amount of data processing, and provide controllable test conditions. Serious games (SGs) have the potential to be new and effective tools in the management and treatment of cognitive impairments Serious games for screening pre-dementia conditions: from virtuality to reality? A pilot project in the elderly. Moreover, by adopting SGs in 3D virtual reality settings, cognitive functions might be evaluated using tasks that simulate daily activities, increasing the "ecological validity" of the assessment. In this commentary we report our experience in the creation of the Smart Aging platform, a 3D SGand virtual environment-based platform for the early identification and characterization of mild cognitive impairment.

A prospective cohort, noncomparative, multicenter trial was conducted to explore the potential of a phytotherapeutic compound, available as a dietary supplement and containing extracts of Bacopa monnieri and Haematococcus pluvialis (astaxanthin) plus phosphatidylserine and vitamin E, in improving cognition in subjects diagnosed with mild cognitive impairment. Enrolled subjects (n=104) were aged 71.2±9.9 years and had a mini-mental state examination score of 26.0±2.0 (mean ± standard deviation). They underwent the Alzheimer's Disease Assessment Scale-cognitive subscale (ADAS-cog) test and the clock drawing test at baseline and upon completion of a 60-day period of dietary supplementation with one tablet daily of the tested compound. In 102 assessable subjects, total ADAS-cog scores improved from 13.7±5.8 at baseline to 9.7±4.9 on day 60, and the clock drawing test scores improved from 8.5±2.3 to 9.1±1.9. Both changes were statistically significant (P<0.001). Memory tasks were the individual components of ADAS-cog showing the largest improvements. In a multivariate analysis, larger improvements in total ADAS-cog score were associated with less compromised baseline mini-mental state examination scores. Perceived efficacy was rated as excellent or good by 62% of study subjects. The tested compound was well tolerated; one nonserious adverse event was reported in the overall study population, and perceived tolerability was rated excellent or good by 99% of the subjects. In conclusion, dietary supplementation with the tested compound shows potential for counteracting cognitive impairment in subjects with mild cognitive impairment and warrants further investigation in adequately controlled, longer-term studies.

Biochar addition to soil is currently being investigated as a novel technology to remediate polluted sites. A critical consideration is the impact of biochar on the intrinsic microbial pollutant degradation, in particular at sites polluted with a mixture of readily biodegradable and more persistent organic pollutants. We therefore studied the impact of biochar (2% on dry weight basis) on the fate of volatile petroleum hydrocarbons in an aerobic sandy soil with batch and column studies. The soil-water partitioning coefficient, K(d), was enhanced in the biochar-amended soil up to a factor 36, and petroleum hydrocarbon vapor migration was retarded accordingly. Despite increased sorption, in particular of monoaromatic hydrocarbons, the overall microbial respiration was comparable in the biochar-amended and unamended soil. This was due to more rapid biodegradation of linear, cyclic and branched alkanes in the biochar amended soil. We concluded that the total petroleum hydrocarbon degradation rate was controlled by a factor other than substrate availability and the reduced availability of monoaromatic hydrocarbons in the biochar amended soil led to greater biodegradation of the other petroleum compounds., (Copyright © 2011 Elsevier B.V. Chronic large granular lymphocyte leukemia is a rather rare disorder (less than 5% of LLC). Its subtype CD3+/CD8+ is often a clonal disease and without malignant characteristics. This kind of disease shows a clinical and laboratory heterogeneity, probably due to the immunological and functional variety of granular lymphocytes. In some cases of LGL leukemia an associated pathology, especially rheumatoid arthritis and chronic infections, has been reported. On the contrary, the relationship with neoplasms has been rarely proved in literature: only occasional studies have been reported and anyway they are not supported by a sufficient number of cases. Two cases of LGL leukemia are here delineated: a woman with advanced breast adenocarcinoma and another one with Sjögren disease. The first one had a rapidly fatal course, while the other one had a prolonged clinical course with chronic neutropenia (13 years follow-up). The association between carcinoma and LGL leukemia may be just a casual finding but the hypothesis of a possible relationship is however very interesting on account of the important role of granular lymphocytes in controlling tumoral growth. Moreover, both patients had concomitant chronic HCV-correlated infection: maybe it will worth making a prevalence study with a greater number of cases, in order to evaluate a probable relationship between these pathologies. The growth factor G-CSF may be useful in the treatment of infections that often occur in patients with severe neutropenia.

Using molecular methods three or five major variants of HTLV-I have been identified; moreover two subtypes of HTLV-II defined as HTLV-IIa and HTLV-IIb with six variants within each of these groups have been described. In the present study we analysed proviral DNA obtained from the peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) of a significant group of Italian intravenous drug users (IVDUs), prison inmates and blood donors (BDs) who were HTLV antibody positive. Restriction fragment length polymorphism (RFLP) of amplified LTR region with ApaI, NdeI, DraI, SacI and MaeIII endonucleases was used to define the HTLV-I subtypes, while the different variants of HTLV-IIa and -IIb were defined by RFLP of the LTR region with the AvaII, BglI, SauI, XhoI and BanII endonucleases. The four HTLV-I isolated from BDs were characterized as C type. All the 11 HTLV-II detected in the IVDUs were HTLV-IIb4, while among the prisoners one HTLV-IIb5 and five HTLV-IIb4 were found. Interestingly, in the BDs group two HTLV-IIa0 and one HTLV-IIb4 were detected. It should also be noted that 82% of the IVDUs and 50% of the prisoners were coinfected with HIV, while all the BDs were HIV negative. These data indicate that HTLV-IIb4 is the predominant genotype in Italian IVDUs and prisoners, while the significant variability observed in the BD HTLV-II isolates could be due to the different source of infection among this group.

Objectives: A study was performed to determine whether persistent or latent viruses are reactivated during the acute attack in relapsing remitting multiple sclerosis (MS)., Material and Methods: DNA of herpes simplex virus type 1 and 2 (HSV-1 and -2), human cytomegalovirus (HCMV), Epstein-Barr virus (EBV), JC virus (JCV) and HTLV-I was searched, using nested polymerase chain reaction (PCR), in peripheral blood mononuclear cells (PBMCs) collected from 14 MS patients on the first day and, twice a week, during an acute attack of the disease., Results: Viral DNA was detected, in at least one PBMC sample, in all the patients. Interestingly, EBV DNA was found in 42.8% of the patients on the first day, while a sharp increase of the HTLV tax-rex DNA frequency (35.7%) was observed on the tenth day., Conclusions: In MS relapse EBV DNA detection is an early, frequent event, while the finding of tax-rex, but not of other HTLV-I genomic regions, is a secondary phenomenon, suggesting that these two factors could interact in the pathogenesis of MS relapses.

We have examined the most recent literature dealing with the relationship between tumor growth and neovascularization (tumoral neoangiogenesis). It is quite evident that antiangiogenic therapy against solid tumors has an important theoretical basis. Many antiangiogenic substances are presently under study, and some inhibitors of angiogenesis, such as TNP-740, platelet factor 4, linomide, tecogalan, etc., are currently being tested in phase 1 or 2 clinical trials. These studies have, however, underscored the possibility of numerous side effects due to the lack of specificity of these substances against endothelial cells. The most promising and rational use of antiangiogenic factors in anticancer therapy seems to be their association with traditional chemo- or radiotherapy. Gene therapy also offers considerable theoretical promise as demonstrated by the transfection of thrombospondin 1 complementary DNA into a human breast carcinoma cell line.
