The aim of this study was to evaluate the effect of problem-based learning (PBL) on university students' satisfaction with and academic performance in a course on epidemiology and social and demographic health. The participants in this interventional study were 529 students (272 in the intervention group and 257 in the control group) enrolled in a medical degree programme during the academic years 2010-2011 and 2011-2012 in Spain. The intervention consisted of the use of a list of problems designed for small-group study in one of the practical sessions (Interpretation of Epidemiological Parameters). We compared students' satisfaction and performance after either PBL or conventional teaching methods. Students' satisfaction and academic performance were significantly better in the PBL group than in the traditional-learning group. Satisfaction with teaching was the main predictor of academic performance. After adjustment for level of satisfaction, the difference between groups in academic performance disappeared.

In order to add value and develop alternatives for the use of okara, a by-product from the soy processing, this study examined the incorporation of 10 and 20% okara flour (OF) and its particle sizes effects (200, 500 and 1000 µm) on the characteristics of gluten-free layer cakes. Batter density and viscosity, cake characteristics (weight loss, specific volume, texture and color) and consumer acceptability were studied. By increasing the OF content batter density and viscosity increased. These changes resulted in a smaller specific volume of cakes with the greatest level substitution by OF. Textural properties of the samples revealed that cake hardness increased, while springiness and cohesiveness decreased in cakes with OF. Crust color of cakes enriched with OF were lighter, less reddish and less yellowish, while crumb color was not affected by the presence of OF. Cakes with 10%OF showed to have the highest acceptability. It was demonstrated that it is possible to make gluten-free layer cake, using OF as partial substitution of rice flour, with good physical characteristics similar texture and acceptability to the control cake. The European tarnished plant bug, Lygus rugulipennis (Heteroptera: Miridae), inflicts serious damage to glasshouse crops, including cucumber, in which it causes distorted foliage, dead growing points and malformed fruits. In a research involving commercial growers, we tested the possibility of using a trap crop to control L. rugulipennis. We screened the attraction of sunflower and lucerne as trap crops using an olfactometer. Adults (females and males) were more attracted to the odour of either flowering sunflower or lucerne than flowering cucumber. In a glasshouse trial, potted flowering sunflowers were evaluated as a trap crop placed at the ends of each cucumber row. Although the trap crop showed much higher attractiveness than the cucumber crop, this effect was not sufficient to provide an acceptable level of control according to the commercial growers. The growers suggested developing artificial sunflower odour as a more efficient lure for removal trapping. As a first step in this development, we tested the attraction of the headspace odour collected from sunflower in olfactometer trials. Sunflower headspace attracted a higher number of adults compared to a blank or a flowering cucumber. The sunflower odour was analysed by gas chromatography coupled to mass-spectrometry to determine compounds possibly involved in L. rugulipennis attraction. The chemical analysis of the plant odour showed a well-defined differentiation between sunflower and cucumber, with a number of monoterpenes released exclusively by sunflower. This, plus an emission rate from sunflower being at least four times more abundant, opens the possibility of using synthetic sunflower volatiles to attract L. rugulipennis within a cucumber background. Humanin is a small endogenous antiapoptotic peptide, originally identified as protective against Alzheimer's disease, but subsequently also found on human endothelium as well as carotid artery plaques. Endothelial dysfunction is a precursor to the development of atherosclerotic plaques, which are characterized by a highly proinflammatory, reactive oxygen species, and apoptotic milieu. Previous animal studies demonstrated that humanin administration may improve endothelial function. Thus the aim of this study was to test the hypothesis that patients with coronary endothelial dysfunction have reduced systemic levels of humanin. Forty patients undergoing coronary angiography and endothelial function testing were included and subsequently divided into two groups based on coronary blood flow (CBF) response to intracoronary acetylcholine (normal ≥50% increase from baseline, n = 20 each). Aortic plasma samples were obtained at the time of catheterization for the analysis of humanin levels and traditional biomarkers of atherosclerosis including C-reactive protein, Lp-Pla2, and homocysteine. Baseline characteristics were similar in both groups. Patients with coronary endothelial dysfunction (change in CBF = -33 ± 25%) had significantly lower humanin levels (1.3 ± 1.1 vs. 2.2 ± 1.5 ng/ml, P = 0.03) compared with those with normal coronary endothelial function (change in CBF = 194 ± 157%). There was a significant and positive correlation between improved CBF and humanin levels (P = 0.0091) not seen with changes in coronary flow reserve (P = 0.76). C-reactive protein, Lp-Pla2, and homocysteine were not associated with humanin levels. Thus we observed that preserved human coronary endothelial function is uniquely associated with higher systemic humanin levels, introducing a potential diagnostic and/or therapeutic target for patients with coronary endothelial function. Green lacewings are generalist predators whose conservation is important for pest control in olive orchards (Olea europaea L.) Sustainable farming practices, as opposed to conventional management techniques, are believed to foster the presence of natural enemies. This study therefore aims to analyze the effect of 1) herbicidal weed cover removal and insecticide applications, and 2) the general management systems used in the olive orchards of southern Spain on chrysopid assemblages and abundance. Green lacewing adults and larvae were collected from olive orchards under conventional, integrated, and organic management systems. In addition, chemical analyses of residues were carried out to determine the presence of insecticidal and herbicidal residues. Eight adult species and three genera of larvae were identified. No rare species were captured from the most intensively farmed orchard, which therefore recorded the most limited chrysopid diversity with a very marked dominance of Chrysoperla cornea s.l.. No effect of dimethoate treatments on Chrysoperla larvae or C. cornea s.l. adults was observed. However, the presence of insecticide residues was associated with the depletion of Dichochrysa larvae. The absence of herbicide treatments favored C. cornea s.l. adult presence on olive trees while larval abundance decreased. Dichochrysa larvae were more abundant when weed cover received no treatment. In relation to the management systems studied, no difference in Chrysoperla larval abundance was observed between conventional and organic orchards. This study examines the effects of altitudinal, temperature and aspect gradients on vascular plant species richness on mountain tops in Sierra Nevada (Spain) at different spatial scales (1 m2 quadrats, plot clusters of 4 m2, upper summit area down to the 5-m contour line, entire summit down to the 10-m contour line). The methodology follows the Global Observation Research Initiative in Alpine Environments (GLORIA) programme. Floristic and soil temperature data of eight summits sites in two neighbouring regions of the high part of Sierra Nevada (from 2668 m to 3327 m a.s.l.) were used in this study. In total, 102 taxa were recorded (84 genera; 29 families). The species richness decreased, whereas the proportion of endemic taxa increased with elevation. There were significant linear relationships between species richness and altitude and average soil temperature at each spatial scale. However, there was no significant relationship between species richness and aspect variables. Facing continued climate change, the high-altitude flora of Sierra Nevada is expected to be particularly vulnerable and prone to warming-induced biodiversity losses due to the high proportion of endemic taxa, ranging from 23% at lower elevations up to 67% at higher ones. Abstract: Aim of study: Within the scope of the European project RUBIA (ICA3-2002-10023), research has been performed on the traditional use and handling of plant species in several Mediterranean countries, Albania, Algeria, Cyprus, Egypt, Italy, Morocco, and Spain. This paper synthesises the chief results related to the medicinal utilization of those plants. Material and methods: The information has been gathered by means of semi-structured interviews (1256) and techniques of participant observation with 803 informants. In each of the participating countries the study areas were selected by means of uniform criteria defined at the beginning of the study. Results and conclusions: A total of 985 species have been catalogued, of which 406 have medicinal use. This work constitutes the first comparative study performed with ethnobotanical data gathered by a coordinated methodology in the Mediterranean area. An exhaustive list is provided for the species catalogued, indicating the regions where each plant was mentioned. Ethnopharmacological relevance: This information underlines the ethnobotanical richness of the region and the need to broaden this study to other areas of the Mediterranean. Furthermore, this constitutes a base for future phytochemical and pharmacological studies which could lead to new therapeutic products. [Copyright &y& Elsevier]

We studied the soils of the Patio de la Acequia garden of the Generalife, a palatial villa forming part of La Alhambra, a World Heritage Site in Granada, Spain. This garden, which is estimated to be around 700 years old, is the oldest historical garden in the Western World. The soils are man-made cumulimollihumic-calcaric (hypereutric, anthric) Regosols. Noteworthy amongst the main pedogenic processes, in relation to the human activities of cultivation, irrigation and tillage, are horizonation, melanization (the contents of organic carbon varied between 0.59% and 8.87%, and those of P205 extracted with citric acid between 723 mg kg−1 and 7333 mg kg−1, with maximae in the Ap horizons) and structure formation. The soil fabric, studied at the ultramicroscopic level using scanning electron microscopy, is of laminar and partition-walls’ type in the lower horizons, depending on the microped zones. The partition-walls’ fabrics found are different to those of the possible pre-existing sedimentary fabrics. These are numerous lithological discontinuities and at least two burials, leading us to deduce that there have been two main stages of filling with materials in the formation of these soils. The first is Arabic-Medieval (13th century), when the garden was created, its surface being some 50 cm below the level of the paved area of the present patio. In the deeper parts, the materials employed in the fill are similar to the in situ soils of the zone, unaffected by the buildings. The second stage is Christian (15th century to the present day). During this period the Medieval garden was gradually buried under a layer of materials from the nearby soils and/or sediments mixed with manure until the surface was only just below the level of the paved area of the patio. In this work we discuss the difficult classification of these relatively little studied soils. In spite of their being clearly related to human activity, they are not classified as Anthrosols in the FAO system (1998) because soil materials cannot be classified as anthropopedogenic or as anthropogeomorphic. Oxygen radical species can influence vascular tone, and antioxidants may have hemodynamic and vascular effects. To date, the vascular effects of chronic intervention with a combination of antioxidant vitamins E and C on renal blood flow (RBF) in hypercholesterolemia (which increases oxidative stress) have not been fully defined. The aim of this intervention study was to explore the involvement of increased oxidative stress in pig RBF disturbance by using chronic dietary antioxidant vitamin intervention. Responses of RBF to the acetylcholine (Ach) were measured in vivo using electron beam computed tomography (EBCT). Acetylcholine significantly increased RBF in normal and hypercholesterolemic + vitamins (P < 0.05 for both), but not in hypercholesterolemic pigs (P =0.1). In normocholesterolemic + vitamins pigs, Ach infusion did not induce any further increase in RBF, but RBF was similar to that observed in normal and hypercholesterolemic + vitamins under the same conditions, and tended to be higher than in hypercholesterolemic pigs (P =0.06). Thus, antioxidants improve RBF in hypercholesterolemic pigs and this effect may help to prevent renal diseases and hypertension in animals. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The well-established role of the kidney in control of blood volume and ultimately arterial blood pressure has been underscored by the demonstration of alterations in renal hemodynamics and function recognized as responsible for these and other regulatory mechanisms. Nevertheless, the spatial complexity of intrarenal structure and function has made evident the need to study these separately in different regions of the intact kidney. Because of the introduction of x-rays, assessment of renal function has indeed been one of their attractive applications. However, despite the appeal of their noninvasiveness, several limitations confounded the different x-ray techniques used, most of which remained unresolved until the development of computed tomography. Furthermore, the development of fast imaging, which allows repetitive analysis of the same region of interest during the transit of contrast medium, holds a great potential to estimate intrarenal distribution of blood flow and the dynamic characteristics of tubular fluid flow in individual nephron segments. This latter assessment requires the administration of filterable x-ray contrast medium, which is cleared from the plasma almost exclusively by glomerular filtration, and the generation of contrast dilution curves. A historical review of the development and progress of the various x-ray techniques used will help understand the past and present of x-ray imaging, and will make it easier to envision the importance of their future roles in the study of renal physiology and pathophysiology.
