Objectives: The purpose of this paper is to assess the determination of male and female sex from trabecular bone structures in the pelvic region. The study involved analyzing digital radiographs for 343 patients and identifying fourteen areas of interest based on their medical significance, with seven regions on each side of the body for symmetry. Methods: Textural parameters for each region were obtained using various methods, and a thorough investigation of data normalization was conducted. Feature selection approaches were then evaluated to determine a small set of the most representative features, which were input into several classification machine learning models. Results: The findings revealed a sex-dependent correlation in the bone structure observed in X-ray images, with the degree of dependency varying based on the anatomical location. Notably, the femoral neck and ischium regions exhibited distinctive characteristics between sexes. Conclusions: This insight is crucial for medical professionals seeking to estimate sex dependencies from such image data. For these four specific areas, the balanced accuracy exceeded 70%. This article presents a design of coverage maps for emergency journeys made by emergency medical services. The system was designed for the Malopolskie Voivodeship Office in Cracow, Poland. The proposed solution displays maps of the ambulance coverage of areas and ambulance’s potential journey times. There are two versions of the map: static and dynamic. The static version is used to appropriately allocate ambulances to cover an area with the ability to reach locations in less than 15 or 20 minutes; the dynamic version allows monitoring of ambulance fleets under normal conditions or in the event of a crisis.

This proactive approach can lead to improved patient outcomes, reduced complications, and enhanced recovery rates, thereby bolstering the physician's reputation and patient satisfaction. Using insights from the study, physicians can ensure that patients have the best potential outcomes from dental implant procedures, especially in terms of minimizing bone loss. Lower radiation exposure and potentially shorter imaging time can enhance the patient's comfort and experience, which indirectly benefits the physician by facilitating easier patient management and improved patient compliance. Prostate cancer is one of the most common cancers in the world. Due to the ageing of society and the extended life of the population, early diagnosis is a great challenge for healthcare. Unfortunately, the currently available diagnostic methods, in which magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) using the PIRADS protocol plays an increasingly important role, are imperfect, mostly in the inability to visualise small cancer foci and misinterpretation of the imagery data. Therefore, there is a great need to improve the methods currently applied and look for even better ones for the early detection of prostate cancer. In the presented research, anonymised MRI scans of 92 patients with evaluation in the PIRADS protocol were selected from the data routinely scanned for prostate cancer. Suspicious tissues were depicted manually under medical supervision. The texture features in the marked regions were calculated using the qMaZda software. The multiple-instance learning approach based on the SVM classifier allowed recognising between healthy and ill prostate tissue. The best F1 score equal to 0.77 with a very high recall equal to 0.70 and precision equal to 0.85 was recorded for the texture features describing the central zone. The research showed that the use of texture analysis in prostate MRI may allow for automation of the assessment of PIRADS scores. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

Medical simulations have proven to be highly valuable in the education of healthcare professionals. This significance was particularly evident during the COVID-19 pandemic, where simulators provided a safe and effective means of training healthcare practitioners in the principles of lung ultrasonography without exposing them to the risk of infection. This further emphasizes another important advantage of medical simulation in the field of medical education. This paper presents the principles of ultrasound simulation in the context of inflammatory lung conditions. The propagation of sound waves in this environment is discussed, with a specific focus on key diagnostic artifacts in lung imaging. The simulated medium was modeled by assigning appropriate acoustic characteristics to the tissue components present in the simulated study. A simulation engine was developed, taking into consideration the requirements of easy accessibility through a web browser and high-performance simulation through GPU-based computing. The obtained images were compared with real-world examples. An analysis of simulation parameter selection was conducted to achieve real-time simulations while maintaining excellent visual quality. The research findings demonstrate the feasibility of real-time, high-quality visualization in ultrasound simulation, providing valuable insights for the development of educational tools and diagnostic training in the field of medical imaging. The aim of this study was to establish a relationship between the textural parameters observed in X-ray images of bones and the age of the individual. The study utilized a meticulous visual analysis of the images to identify significant correlations between textural features and age. Five distinct regions of interest, namely the Wing of the Ilium, Neck of the Femur, Greater Trochanter, Ischium, and Shaft of the Femur, were identified on both sides of the body. Textural parameters were then measured for each of these regions. The left femoral neck showed the most noteworthy associations, with the textures generated from the histogram of oriented gradients and gray-level co-occurrence matrix exhibiting the strongest correlations (ρ −0.52, p-value 4.95 × 10−14). The main finding of the current study is that correlation of age-dependent bone structure differences in the femoral neck area is higher than in other structures of the femur. This proposed methodology has the potential to aid in the early detection of osteoporosis, which is crucial for devising treatment plans and identifying potential risks associated with bone fragility. The selection of the matrix size is an important element of the magnetic resonance imaging (MRI) process, and has a significant impact on the acquired image quality. Signal to noise ratio, often used to assess MR image quality, has its limitations. Thus, for this purpose we propose a novel approach: the use of texture analysis as an index of the image quality that is sensitive for the change of matrix size. Image texture in biomedical images represents tissue and organ structures visualized via medical imaging modalities such as MRI. The correlation between texture parameters determined for the same tissues visualized in images acquired with different matrix sizes is analyzed to aid in the assessment of the selection of the optimal matrix size. T2-weighted coronal images of shoulders were acquired using five different matrix sizes while maintaining the same field of view; three regions of interest (bone, fat, and muscle) were considered. Lin's correlation coefficients were calculated for all possible pairs of the 310-element texture feature vectors evaluated for each matrix. The obtained results are discussed considering the image noise and blurring effect visible in images acquired with smaller matrices. Purpose: Subjective quality assessment of displayed magnetic resonance (MR) images plays a key role in diagnosis and the resultant treatment. Therefore, this study aims to introduce a new no‐reference (NR) image quality assessment (IQA) method for the objective, automatic evaluation of MR images and compare its judgments with those of similar techniques. Methods: A novel NR‐IQA method was developed. The method uses a sequence of scaled images filtered to enhance high‐frequency components and preserve low‐frequency parts. Since the human visual system (HVS) is sensitive to local image variations and local features often mimic the attraction of the HVS to high‐frequency image regions, they were detected in the filtered images and described. Then, the statistics of obtained descriptors were used to build a quality model via the Support Vector Regression method. Results: The method was compared with 21 state‐of‐the‐art techniques for NR‐IQA on a new dataset of 70 distorted MR images assessed by 31 experienced radiologists, using typical evaluation criteria for the comparison of NR measures. The introduced method significantly outperforms the compared approaches, in terms of the correlation with human judgments. Conclusions: It is demonstrated that the presented NR‐IQA method for the assessment of MR images is superior to the state‐of‐the‐art NR techniques. In this article, a new method of information extraction on the basis of the differentiation of T1- and T2-weighted MR images is proposed. It relies on a technique of superposition of T1- and T2-weighted MR images with use of statistical dominance algorithm. Correlation of parametrized image texture features (ITF) analyses conducted in different regions of interest (ROIs) overcomes limitations and reliably reflects image quality. The aim of this study is to propose a nonparametrical method and classify the quality of a magnetic resonance (MR) image that has undergone controlled degradation by using textural features in the image. Images of 41 patients, 17 women and 24 men, aged between 23 and 56 years were analyzed. T2-weighted sagittal sequences of the lumbar spine, cervical spine, and knee and T2-weighted coronal sequences of the shoulder and wrist were generated. The implementation of parallel imaging with the use of GRAPPA2, GRAPPA3, and GRAPPA4 led to a substantial reduction in the scanning time but also degraded image quality. The number of degraded image textural features was correlated with the scanning time. Longer scan times correlated with markedly higher ITF image persistence in comparison with images computed with reduced scan times. Higher ITF preservation was observed in images of bones in the spine and femur as compared to images of soft tissues, i.e., tendons and muscles. Finally, a nonparametrized image quality assessment based on an analysis of the ITF, computed for different tissues, correlating with the changes in acquisition time of the MR images, was successfully developed. The correlation between acquisition time and the number of reproducible features present in an MR image was found to yield the necessary assumptions to calculate the quality index. The aim of this study was to examine whether additional digital intraoral radiography (DIR) image preprocessing based on textural description methods improves the recognition and differentiation of periapical lesions. (1) DIR image analysis protocols incorporating clustering with the k-means approach (CLU), texture features derived from co-occurrence matrices, first-order features (FOF), gray-tone difference matrices, run-length matrices (RLM), and local binary patterns, were used to transform DIR images derived from 161 input images into textural feature maps. These maps were used to determine the capacity of the DIR representation technique to yield information about the shape of a structure, its pattern, and adequate tissue contrast. The effectiveness of the textural feature maps with regard to detection of lesions was revealed by two radiologists independently with consecutive interrater agreement. (2) High sensitivity and specificity in the recognition of radiological features of lytic lesions, i.e., radiodensity, border definition, and tissue contrast, was accomplished by CLU, FOF energy, and RLM. Detection of sclerotic lesions was refined with the use of RLM. FOF texture contributed substantially to the high sensitivity of diagnosis of sclerotic lesions. (3) Specific DIR texture-based methods markedly increased the sensitivity of the DIR technique. Therefore, application of textural feature mapping constitutes a promising diagnostic tool for improving recognition of dimension and possibly internal structure of the periapical lesions. In this paper, the minimization of total weighted completion time (total cost) for asynchronous transmission in distributed systems is discussed. Special attention has been paid to the problem of message scheduling on the sender side. Messages to be sent form a queue, therefore the order in which they are to be sent has to be set. Scheduling algorithms can be chosen to optimize scheduling criteria such as total completion time or total weighted completion time. The message scheduling problem becomes complicated considerably when the transmitted data stream between the sender and the receiver is formed into packets. TheWSPT (Weighted Shortest Processing Time) scheduling rule, which orders messages according to non-decreasing length and weight ratios has been proven to be non-optimal. It has been demonstrated that the problem of minimizing the total weighted completion time is NP-hard. Medical simulation is a new method of education in medicine. It allows training medical students or practitioners without the need to involve patients and makes them familiar with various kinds of examinations, especially related to medical imaging. Simulators that visualize examinations or operations require large computing power to keep time constraints of output presentation. A common approach to this problem is to use graphics processing units (GPU), but the code is not portable. The method of parallelization of processing is more important in component environments, to allow calculating projections in real time. In this paper parallelization issues in the ultrasound view simulation based on provided computer tomography images are analyzed. The proposed domain decomposition for this problem leads to significant reduction in simulation time and allows obtaining an animated visualization for currently available personal computers with multicore processors. The use of a component environment makes the solution portable and makes it possible to implement a web-based application that is the basis for eTraining. Simulators are a new tool in education in many fields, including medicine, where they greatly improve familiarity with medical procedures, reduce costs, and, importantly, cause no harm to patients. This is so in the case of transesophageal echocardiography (TEE), in which the use of a simulator facilitates spatial orientation and helps in case studies. The aim of the project described in this paper is to simulate an examination by TEE. This research makes use of available computed tomography data to simulate the corresponding echocardiographic view. This paper describes the essential characteristics that distinguish these two modalities and the key principles of the wave phenomena that should be considered in the simulation process, taking into account the conditions specific to the echocardiography. The construction of the CT2TEE (Web-based TEE simulator) is also presented. The considerations include ray-tracing and ray-casting techniques in the context of ultrasound beam and artifact simulation. An important aspect of the interaction with the user is raised. In this paper we present two methods of binarization of corneal endothelial images. The binarization is a first step of advanced image analysis. Images of corneal endothelial obtained by the specular microscopy have a poor dynamic range and they are usually non-uniformly illuminated. The binarization endothelial images is not trivial. The minimization of the total completion time for asynchronous transmission in distributed systems is discussed. Attention is focused on the problem of message scheduling on part of the sender. Messages to be sent form a queue, and the order in which they are to be sent has to be first established. The methods of scheduling messages, which minimize the factor of the total completion time, are presented herein. The message-scheduling problem becomes considerably complicated when the stream of data transmitted between the sender and the receiver is organized into packets. A scheduling rule, according to which the shortest messages (SPT--Shortest Processing Time) are selected as the first to be sent, has been proven to be appropriate for the proposed model. A heuristic algorithm for scheduling messages with real-time constraints is proposed. The performance of the scheduling algorithm is experimentally evaluated. The results of the study show the possibility of improving the total completion time from a few to ten percent, depending on the characteristics of the sender. The aim of this study was to evaluate whether textural analysis could differentiate between the two common types of lytic lesions imaged with use of radiography. Sixty-two patients were enrolled in the study with intraoral radiograph images and a histological reference study. Full textural analysis was performed using MaZda software. For over 10,000 features, logistic regression models were applied. Fragments containing lesion edges were characterized by significant correlation of structural information. Although the input images were stored using lossy compression and their scale was not preserved, the obtained results confirmed the possibility of distinguishing between cysts and granulomas with use of textural analysis of intraoral radiographs. The quality of magnetic resonance images may influence the diagnosis and subsequent treatment. Therefore, in this paper, a novel no-reference (NR) magnetic resonance image quality assessment (MRIQA) method is proposed. In the approach, deep convolutional neural network architectures are fused and jointly trained to better capture the characteristics of MR images. Then, to improve the quality prediction performance, the support vector machine regression (SVR) technique is employed on the features generated by fused networks. In the paper, several promising network architectures are introduced, investigated, and experimentally compared with state-of-the-art NR-IQA methods on two representative MRIQA benchmark datasets. One of the datasets is introduced in this work. As the experimental validation reveals, the proposed fusion of networks outperforms related approaches in terms of correlation with subjective opinions of a large number of experienced radiologists. An investigation of diseases using magnetic resonance (MR) imaging requires automatic image quality assessment methods able to exclude low-quality scans. Such methods can be also employed for an optimization of parameters of imaging systems or evaluation of image processing algorithms. Therefore, in this paper, a novel blind image quality assessment (BIQA) method for the evaluation of MR images is introduced. It is observed that the result of filtering using non-maximum suppression (NMS) strongly depends on the perceptual quality of an input image. Hence, in the method, the image is first processed by the NMS with various levels of acceptable local intensity difference. Then, the quality is efficiently expressed by the entropy of a sequence of extrema numbers obtained with the thresholded NMS. The proposed BIQA approach is compared with ten state-of-the-art techniques on a dataset containing MR images and subjective scores provided by 31 experienced radiologists. The Pearson, Spearman, Kendall correlation coefficients and root mean square error for the method assessing images in the dataset were 0.6741, 0.3540, 0.2428, and 0.5375, respectively. The extensive experimental evaluation of the BIQA methods reveals that the introduced measure outperforms related techniques by a large margin as it correlates better with human scores.
