The structural and electrical properties of polycrystalline samples of dimeric cadmium tartrate ((Cd,C4H4O6)2H2O)3H2O are studied using x-ray powder diffraction and impedance measurements. Results show that two phase transitions occur at temperatures 65 and 75 degrees Centigrade. The first phase at 65 degrees Centigrade is structural in origin while the second phase at 75 degrees Centigrade involves the loss of water molecules.

Objective The Relevance 2050 Initiative's Student Pipeline Subcommittee and the Board Certification Promotion Committee of the American Academy of Clinical Neuropsychology, in collaboration with the American Board of Clinical Neuropsychology, produced the first installment of a free webinar series to promote early education on board certification (BC) in clinical neuropsychology. A pre-webinar survey was given to inform future webinar topics and initiatives, including identification of specific barriers/concerns about BC. Method A total of 197 respondents completed the survey and self-identified as White (61%), Asian (16%), Hispanic (11%), African American (6%) and Multiracial (6%). Respondents' demographics, type of doctoral program, program accreditation status, level of interest in pursuing BC, and specific barriers/concerns about BC were collected. Respondents self-identified with the following diverse groups: first-generation college student (19% White, 38% Asian, 18% Hispanic, 16% African American, 41% Multiracial), low SES (8% White, 6% Asian, 36% Hispanic, 33% African American, 33% Multiracial) and sexual gender minority (6% White, 6% Asian, 9% Hispanic, 43% Multiracial). Outcomes Qualitative data analysis of barriers/concerns identified the following themes: money, time, knowledge about BC, training flexibility, breadth of knowledge, training/mentor opportunities, international issues, and documentation. The top three barriers included training/mentor opportunities, training flexibility, and knowledge about BC. More than half of non-White trainees (60%; χ2 = 3.864, p =.049) endorsed training/mentor opportunities as a barrier relative to White trainees (41%), particularly among Hispanic trainees (82%) relative to other minority trainees. Discussion Results highlight the need to increase awareness and information about the BC. Also suggested is prioritization of resources for training/mentor opportunities, particularly for minority trainees. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

This study describes the optimization of the wastewater treatment process through the use of a free water surface flow constructed wetland with floating macrophytes at the laboratory level (20 L). A factorial design 23 was used in order to find the best operation conditions of the wastewater treatment process. The performance of macrophytes Eichhornia crassipes and Typha domingensis was investigated by operating the wetland system at hydraulic retention times of 2 and 4 days. The results showed an optimum operational condition that removed 92.39% of initial organic load (measured as COD). The nutrient removal efficiency of the constructed wetland was 99.28% for total nitrogen and 87.78% for phosphorus. The best operating condition includes the use of E. crassipes, with 4 days of hydraulic retention and the use of gravel as a filter. According to this, organic matter degradation kinetics was studied by the comparison of three kinetic models: first-order model, Stover-Kincannon model and Grau-second-order model. Stover-Kincannon and Grau kinetics models were more appropriate to represent the organic matter degradation kinetics in constructed wetland, with a determination coefficient of 0.9997. Abstract: This work is a theoretical and practical study on the synthesis and characterization of a ZnO photocatalyst doped with X-ray diffraction analysis, band gap energy ranges and BET surface area measurements demonstrated that had an impact on the photocatalyst properties of ZnO, when this material was used for the production of oxidizing agents by the action of ultraviolet radiation. Significant changes in the band gap energy were observed for ZnO doped with 3 mol of The photodegradation of 2,4-dichlorophenoxyacetic acid (2,4-D) was evaluated, a toxic pesticide found in agricultural effluents in Sinaloa (Mexico). Degradation process was monitored in photoreactors of 500 mL, in which the maximum degradation efficiency was achieved after 6 h. A removal efficiency of 38.4% (1.55 mmol/L) was found with an undoped ZnO, while an efficiency of 82.3% (3.4 mmol/L) was observed with doped ZnO. Based on the results obtained, the photocatalysts used in this study can be considered as promising materials to mitigate pollution problems coming from agricultural activities in these regions. The aim of this work was to study the effect of the interaction of colloidal nano SiO2 (NS) with a hardened Portland cement paste (PCP). An electric circuit arrangement with two electrodes was used to create an electric field around a PCP sample. NS was used as catholyte and water as anolyte to assure electric conductivity. Results obtained using an optical Microscopy and Scanning Electron Microscopy showed that NS particles reached a distance up to 1.5 mm from the surface in contact with the PCP sample to the interior of the sample. Energy dispersive X-ray Spectroscopy showed an enrichment of Si in the zone where NS migrated. An alteration of the Ca/Si ratios was also observed, with values below of both conventional anhydrous and hydrated phases. Thermo-gravimetric analysis (TG) showed that NS affected the content balance between CSH gel and Ca(OH)2 in a migrated NS sample compared with a reference sample; this could represent an evidence that NS affected the cement matrix with a possible pozzolanic reaction even after the hardened stage of the PCP. The dynamics of water temperature, dissolved oxygen and total dissolved solids concentrations in Aguamilpa Reservoir was analysed by considering horizontal and water column variations. The reservoir model, CE-QUAL-W2, was used to simulate the temporal variations calibrated with data gathered every 2 months from June 2008 to June 2009. Temperature depth profiles indicated a typical asymmetry of reservoirs exhibiting a large stratification in the lower part near the dam. Dissolved oxygen concentration profiles exhibited some degree of anoxia in the bottom water during the rainy season (May through October). This is most likely due to decomposition vegetation and organic matter via soil erosion and run-off from the basin accumulating at the bottom of the reservoir. The reservoir stratification is clearly seasonal, occurring during the rainy season, especially in the lowest reservoir zones. The CE-QUAL-W2 model results provided a comprehensive understanding of the temporal behaviour of the study variables during the modelling study period. Application of this water quality model is directed to water resource managers to help them better understand the dynamics of physico-chemical processes, and how they vary temporally and spatially in the reservoir, and to propose the best management practices for preserving or improving the water quality of the system. Dysregulation of gene expression is one of the mechanisms involved in the pathophysiology of Huntington's disease (HD). Here, we examined whether mutant huntingtin regulates the levels of PH domain leucine-rich repeat protein phosphatase 1 (PHLPP1), a phosphatase that specifically dephosphorylates Akt at Ser473. Our results show decreased PHLPP1 protein levels in knock-in models (HdhQ111/Q111 mouse striatum and STHdhQ111/Q111 cells), in the striatum of N-terminal exon-1 mutant huntingtin transgenic mouse models (R6/1; R6/1 : BDNF +/−, R6/2 and Tet/HD94) and in the putamen of HD patients. Quantitative PCR analysis revealed a reduction in PHLPP1 mRNA levels in the striatum of R6/1 compared with wild-type mice. Coincident with reduced PHLPP1 protein levels, we observed increased phosphorylated Akt (Ser473) levels specifically in the striatum. The analysis of the conditional mouse model Tet/HD94 disclosed that after mutant huntingtin shutdown PHLPP1 levels returned to wild-type levels whereas phospho-Akt levels were partially reduced. In conclusion, our results show that mutant huntingtin downregulates PHLPP1 expression. In the striatum, these reduced levels of PHLPP1 can contribute to maintain high levels of activated Akt that may delay cell death and allow the recovery of neuronal viability after mutant huntingtin silencing. This review paper comprises main concepts, available observational data and recent theoretical results related to astrophysical aspects of particle acceleration at/near the Sun and extreme capacities of the solar accelerator(s). We summarize underground and ground-based observations of solar cosmic rays (SCR) accumulated since 1942, direct spacecraft measurements of solar energetic particles (SEP) near the Earth's orbit, indirect information on the SCR variations in the past, and other relevant astrophysical, solar and geophysical data. The list of the problems under discussion includes: upper limit spectrum (ULS) for solar cosmic rays; maximum energy (rigidity), Em(Rm), of particles accelerated at/near the Sun; production of the flare neutrinos; energetics of SCR and solar flares; production of flare neutrons and gamma rays; charge states and elemental abundances of accelerated solar ions; coronal mass ejections (CME's) and extended coronal structures in acceleration models; magnetic reconnection in acceleration scenarios; size (frequency) distributions of solar proton events (SPE) and stellar flares; occurrence probability of giant flares; archaeology of solar cosmic rays. The discussion allows us to outline a series of interesting conceptual and physical associations of SCR generation with the high-energy processes at other stars. The most reliable estimates of various parameters are given in each of research fields mentioned above; a set of promising lines of future studies is highlighted. Single‐wall carbon nanotubes were prepared under hydrogen gas atmosphere with a DC arc discharge maintained between the tip of a sharpened graphite cathode and an anode formed by a catalytic mixture of graphite, FeS, Ni, Fe and Co compressed powders. The cathode is placed with an inclination with respect to the anode, so that the plasma jet of the discharge is deviated towards the empty space of the growth chamber. Samples were classified and analyzed according to their type and growth positions relative to the direction of the plasma jet flow. Characterization of the samples was performed with mass spectrometry, Raman spectroscopy and transmission electron microscopy. A subtle variation is found in the properties of the nanotubes obtained in different locations due to the directionality of the plasma jet flow. Observed differences in sample properties may be qualitatively understood in terms of accepted mechanisms of SWNT growth. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]

The relationship between solar activity and the water volumes of lakes is searched here by means of correlational and spectral analysis methods. The level of two lakes, Pátzcuaro in México and Tchudskoye in Russia, together with solar activity indexes are used for the analysis. It is found that the source of the oscillation mechanism of the level of those lakes is the solar activity cycle through its influence on the magnetosphere and the terrestrial atmosphere. Polycristalline samples of cobalt, nickel and manganese tartrates were studied using impedance measurements and x-ray powder diffraction in the temperature range 213-300 K. The dependence of the real part of the dielectric permittivity for manganese tartrate showed a peak at about 250 K, which can be interpreted in favour of phase transition. The article presents a case study of a 39-year-old diabetic mother's newborn girl with a Tessier 7 cleft. The left fetal hemiface's deformity was discovered through two-dimensional ultrasound scanning at week 29 of the fetus, in which the ultrasound image remained the same throughout the pregnancy. The article discusses Tessier number 7 cleft, which is at high risk for those whose mothers are diabetic.

Glass ceramics of composition 95SiO2-5SnO2 doped with 0.4 mol% Eu3+ have been prepared by thermal treatment of sol-gel glasses. The segregated SnO2 nanocrystals present a mean size comparable to the bulk exciton Bohr radius (about 2.4 nm), corresponding to a wide band-gap quantum-dot system in an insulator SiO2 glass. A fraction of the Eu3+ ions is incorporated to the SnO2 nanocrystals in the process. In these strong confinement conditions, the energy gap presents a high dependence on the nanocrystal size. Taking advantage of this effect, it has been possible to excite selectively the Eu3+ ions located in the SnO2 nanocrystals, by energy transfer from the host, obtaining emission spectra that depend on the nanocrystal size. The Eu3+ ions environment in small nanocrystals (radius under 2 nm) are very distorted, meanwhile they are like crystalline for nanocrystals with a radius of some nanometers. [ABSTRACT FROM AUTHOR]
